The Trembling Cup
Review: The Cuckoo Storm might never have been, were it not for a social media post Adrian Crowley wrote on a wintry late-night walk in a quiet neighbourhood of Dublin during lockdown. Struck by Waterson's previous album Death Had Quicker Wings Than Love (co-written with David A Jaycock), Crowley wanted to mark the moment, and so pressed 'send' into the ether with no way of knowing what would follow. Drawn to his voice and seeing a kindred spirit in his poetic lyrics, Waterson was touched by his message and responded by asking if he would be interested in working together. His answer was a resounding 'yes.' Cuckoo Storm followed; a deeply compelling album and serendipitous collaboration comprising eleven beautifully crafted songs, sung by two matching voices that are a powerful match. Waterson's brilliantly distinctive voice is underpinned by Crowley's rich baritone, and together it's an intoxicating mix.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

Review: "This LP is a compilation of songs from five different digital-only demo collections I released on Bandcamp between 2021 and 2023. I relied on the ears and judgment of my old friend Dom at Feral Child to curate this comp, allowing him to choose his favorites from over 60 songs," James Toth says of Demon Stations. "While I might have chosen an entirely different batch of tunes, I was happy to defer to Dom, as I've never had much perspective when it comes to assessing my own material." With every track recorded at home, many on the same day they were written, and mostly first takes used, there's an audible quality to this collection of archive material that's every bit as honest as the artist's own explanation as to how the final package came about. An atmosphere entirely befitting the open-hearted folk and Americana dominating the release.

Review: "No-one knew the songs or what the plan was. We kept it loose and fun. This was the spirit of the sessions. No headphones, no playback, minimal overdubs, or bleed. Fast and loose," says Sam Evian of his latest record, the first to grace his new imprint, Thirty Tigers. If that's not enough to make you balk with jealously at not being invited, then the idea of Big Thief's Adrian Lenker and Sufjan Stevens, among others, debasing to Evian's house in the Catskills to examine a revamped studio, complete with vintage tape deck and console, then going wild swimming at midnight, just as snow fell, might seal the deal. The following day, work began on Plunge, a record with no real fixed direction or plan. In the end, it will - or, at least, it should - be remembered among Evian's finest offerings. A stunning collection of folk-leaning rock 'n' roll, Americana and jangly indie, you can almost smell upstate New York.

Review: Inner Cop Avoidance is a cult supergroup that is already surrounded by plenty of discussion and conspiracy despite only having played their first gig in 2022. Made up of Krisitan Poulsen on guitar, Mathias Saedrup guitar, Sebastian von der Heide on drums and percussion, Max Stocklosa on synth, xylophone and vocals, this self-titled album from the group lands as the inaugural drop on their own label. It is a brilliantly cacophony of electronics and percussion with twisted rhythms, post-rock guitars and a fiercely experimental approach that results in brilliantly beguiling music that somehow combines the futuristic and avant garde with bird calls and ancient shamanic ritual.

Review: Light In The Attic presents the latest in the Nancy Sinatra Archival Series with a deluxe reissue of Nancy's first album, Boots. The 1966 million-selling debut LP introduced the sassy, blonde, go-go booted icon; built around her Lee Hazlewood-penned hits 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'' and 'So Long, Babe,' the folk-rock era milestone album features songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Hazlewood and more. The catchy and jangly pop hooks performed by famed Los Angeles session musicians The Wrecking Crew and Billy Strange's innovative arrangements provided the perfect sound to help Nancy capture the attention of the world. The new reissue includes two bonus tracks recorded during the album sessions, the non-album B-side 'The City Never Sleeps At Night' and the previously unreleased 'For Some.'

Review: The long lost 1968 debut album by singer-songwriter Scott Fagan, South Atlantic Blues, comes reissued for the first time in its original artwork, with an iconic portrait of Fagan by famed rock photographer Joel Brodsky, following a widely celebrated 2015 release. Revisiting his mystical, mythical, and deeply soulful masterpiece, this psych-folk gem doffs a Tropicalia hat direct from downtown New York. Fagan's story is worthy of a movie in itself. A swinging hipster who landed in 60s Greenwich folk scene, escaping the abject poverty of his U.S. Virgin Islands upbringing, Fagan found himself mentored by the Brill Building's Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, and feted as the next big thing. "Forget Rodriguez, forget Searching for Sugar Man," says Sharyn Felder, daughter of the late Doc Pomus, the legendary songwriter who signed Fagan to management in 1964. "Scott was so much more. He was cut from a different cloth." South Atlantic Blues is the perfect soundtrack to this tale, an epic song cycle wrapped around an impassioned love story, driven by Fagan's dense, allusive lyrics, and production by Elmer Jared Gordon (Pearls Before Swine) and rich arrangements by Horace Ott (Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, The Shirelles).

Review: Martin Carthy's revolutionary trad-folk eponymous debut hears a repress via Topic, the label through which it was originally released. Truly, if it weren't for Carthy, both album and artist, there would be no Bob Dylan nor Paul Simon; having emerged in the early 1960s to a second English folk revival - which, while existing in the ferment of the sweats of one English folklorist Cecil Sharp, whose lifelong travail was to reinvigorate belief in an Englishness founded on myth, decades earlier - Carthy's music was wholly endemic to the latter-day revival of the 1960s, which was far less 'trad' than Sharp's in that it allowed more room for artists to experiment with the form. Though every lyric here is a folk transmission, it's as if Carthy's socialist upbringing (by trade unionist lightermen parents, no less) comes filtered through its every utterance; Carthy approaches every folk classic from Sharp's own invention 'High Germany' through to more indelible standards, such as 'The Wind That Shakes The Barley', 'Scarborough Fair' and 'Springhill Mine Disaster', all with equal legend Dave Swarbrick in tow for fiddle and mandolin duties.

Review: Adrianne Lenker's run of mesmerising wyrd folk work continues apace with her latest album on 4AD. There's always been a fragile, old-world quality to the American singer-songwriter's work, whether solo or in Big Thief, but the process is foregrounded on bright future thanks to the emphasis the label put on the album's all-analogue recording and production process. It's an approach which absolutely chimes with the charming delicacy of the songs contained within, guided by Lenker's distinctive countrified twang. What makes Lenker's music novel in the long and winding tradition of country and folk is the subtle surrealism you can hear scattered amongst the tradition - just listen to the guitar treatment on 'Fool' for all the proof you need.

Review: Waxahatchee is emerging, butterfly like, from a cocoon that has kept her safe for most of her career. There was nothing ugly or hidden about Katie Crutchfield's older output. But it was intimate, quiet, thoughtful, vulnerable and, at times, almost a little nervous. At least some of those adjectives became irrelevant with the last LP, Saint Cloud, and now she follows up that ten-foot-tall 2020 triumph with Tigers Blood, continuing in a similar vein. Having significantly increased the size of her audience with the preceding, infinitely rousing record, Crutchfield simultaneously looks to please those newcomers and win even more over here. The tracks are similarly open armed, proud and accessible, but the razor sharp songwriting - dealing with everything from trying to stay still without being bored, to self doubt - has lost none of its impact, and the instrumental arrangements have arguably never been stronger.

Review: Alan Stivell (Breton for 'gushing spring'), born January 6, 1944, is a French singer songwriter and musician. He campaigns for the recognition of the Breton people with their language, culture, and territory. He is, above all, a multi-instrumentalist: mainly Celtic harp, but also piano and keyboards, Irish flute, bombard, Scottish bagpipes and even percussion. Since the 1950s, thanks to his father's work, Stivell has helped revive the Celtic harp in Brittany; Renaissance De La Harpe Celtique does what it says on the tin; a thoroughly mystical and atmospheric album, the long-player comes packed with Celtic pentatonics, dewey field recordings, and, above all, mellifluous harp, all of which segue together to form an implicit instrumental picture of a Breton people in harmony with nature and spirit, making for a benchmark project in the Celtic folk revival of the 1970s.

Review: Discovered after 55 years, the previously unreleased soundtrack to the 1964 noir film You're Not From Around Here finally emerges from the Louis Wayne Moody archive. Laden with twangy tremolo and reverb-drenched revenge, it navigates themes of alienation, paranoia, and existential echo. Packaged in a replica film canister with rusted varnishes and a debossed logo, it immerses you in a world of moral ambiguity. This Cabinet of Curiosities release by Numero delves into the esoteric possibilities of curation, weaving threads of intentionality and psychic connections through music history. It's a tribute to the DIY museum and the emotionally charged artifacts of post-industrial consumerism.

Review: Resurfacing from obscurity after 58 years in the Louis Wayne Moody Pictures vault, this unearthed soundtrack unveils a treasure trove of melancholic melodies, mournful guitars, and eerie echoes. It is another of the seemingly endless gems to come from the great folks at Number Uno and is laden with themes of abandonment, shattered dreams, and existential ponderings. The album, titled They Move in the Night, weaves a narrative of moral ambiguity and tearful farewells, set against the backdrop of lukewarm diner coffee and the relentless pursuit of society's shadows. Fascinating stuff.

Review: Nico's Marble Index was the first album to establish the German musician's home in the avant-garde; the story of the fashion model turned "legitimate" artist is as old as time, yet is rarely told today. In contrast to her first album, Chelsea Girl, which consisted almost entirely of pop chansons, Nico's sophomore LP here tracks nicely with her working introduction to John Cale in his harmonium era, drawing inspiration primarily from modern European classical music, not three-minute hookcraft. Long out of print, this slow-burner of a critical classic now hears a worthy reissue via Domino.

Review: As part of a new looking back on German art rocker Nico's esteemed career by the indie label Domino, Desertshore chronologically follows The Marble Index, and is her third album, following the prior project's establishing her as an avant-garde artist with one foot in the mainstream, in stark defiance of the the prejudiced poo-poohs that followed her first (baroque pop) album, Chelsea Girl. Desertshore is more of a reconciliation of her prior two projects, bringing back the initial western pop sensibility while now firmly basking in a newfound weirdness-and-she-knows-it. From the opening dark waves of 'Janitor Of Lunacy' to the piano-balladic injection of sadness that is 'Afraid', this is another avant-garde masterpiece by the musician, never justifiably passed over.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album, Something In The Room She Moves, is a dreamlike exploration of complexity and transformability, featuring flowing harmonic universes and fluid, water-like melodies. Her vocal register, reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux, Nico, or Kate Bush, possesses a matchstick intensity, rekindling its own flame through the conversation in her voice. Holter's diaphragm shifts between instruments, creating a continuum of fretless electric bass pitches counterpointing with gliding vocal melodies. Glissing Yamaha CS-60 adds a touch of experimentalism, while her production choices and arrangements maintain a sense of simplicity and refinement. Holter's singing resonates in somatic frequencies, evoking a deep connection between mind and body. With its liquid, ever-changing nature, 'Something In The Room She Moves' invites listeners to immerse themselves in a world of sound that is both ethereal and profoundly human.

Review: On Imitation of War, songwriter and guitarist Kayla Cohen advances Itasca into rockier terrain, with a suite of smoky nocturnes and uneasy idylls surveying, with refreshing urgency, mythologies and psychologies both classical and personal. Co-produced by Robbie Cody (Wand, Behavior), these ten sturdy set-pieces represent the loosest, leanest, and most smoulderingly electric, guitar-forward recordings in Cohen's deepening catalog. Cohen explains the title as the "performance of war postures" evident at every scale of human and animal life, making war itself, or at least the thing we call war, a fundamental fact of existence. But it could just as easily apply to the revelation that, with Imitation of War, Itasca has finally come to inhabit fully the staged postures toward which former records gestured. She sounds more herself, more confidently authorial than the longing protagonist of her earlier work. This self-knowing sentiment implied in the lyrics of 'El Dorado'; no imitation, formal or emotional, of former self or imagined other, remains.

Review: After a rise to prominence as one half of the original Irish Americana duo the Lost Brothers, Irish singer-songwriter Oisin Leach recorded his latest solo album Cold Sea on the scenic coast of Donegal. In contrast to the former project's sound, Cold Sea makes for a solitary affair, with its pensive progressions and Arthur Russell-esque vocal feints conjuring ideas of an embrace of formative aloneness and its making in an old schoolhouse implying undertones of childhood recollection. With former Dylan sidekick Tony Garnier on bass, and Donal Lunny on distinctive bouzouki duties, Cold Sea is a wild, moss-stricken coastal invocation, told via the trusty media that are folk style and vintage gear.

Released in 2021, the album is a poignant exploration of working-class tales and social commentary, blending folk and rock influences. His album is a sincere and evocative musical offering that speaks to the experiences and struggles of us all.

Review: Focus On Nature is the new studio album from celebrated post-psyche singer songwriter Nick Saloman and his band The Bevis Frond. Seventy-five minutes of glorious melodies that span 60s psych, English folk, Seattle art-punks The Wipers, the buzzsaw pop of Dinosaur Jr and Hendrix-esque explorations. There's always an element of playful Englishness to their music. Heavily influencing the likes of The Lemonheads, Teenage Fanclub, Elliot Smith, Pavement and Dinosaur Jr, the cult icons have produced another off-kilter mix of melodic piano-led melancholy, acoustic ruminations, scratchy garage rock with a punky edge and full-on guitar histrionics.

Review: Copenhagen-based Jason Dungan, aka Blue Lake arrives on Tonal Union with a stunning album built around inquisitive approaches to zithers, drones, clarinets, slide guitar and drum machines. It's a pastoral record first and foremost, but it's not bound by musical tradition and instead uses the impetus of post rock as a motivation to explore expressive, evocative spaces through composition and instrumentation. There are countless moments of shimmering beauty scattered throughout this vibrant album, which respond to the time he spent isolated in a remote part of Sweden while crafting the bulk of the music.

Review: Julia Holter's sixth album Something in the Room She Moves might just be the Los Angeles songwriter's best work. In the past she has often explored memory and dreamlike futures but on this new outing she is very much more in the moment throughout. She explains herself hat "There's a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies." Musically the album mixes fretless electric bass pitches with her unique vocal melodies. The recognisable sounds of the Yamaha CS-60 interweave with more organic wind instruments and add up to a fluid, watery sound that flows smooth and carries you along with it amongst the gorgeous harmonies.

Review: The widely adored jazz and pop crooner Norah Jones is back with another super soothing new album. Vision arrives on the legendary Blue Note and is the ninth full-length from the singer-songwriter but the first in collaboration with Leon Michels who is an instrumental maestro behind the El Michels Affair. He brings plenty of musical richness and charming hooks and melodies to the smoky and soulful vocals of Jones. All 12 tunes are vibrant and joyous as Jones sings about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It's a more uplifting work following on from the melancholic vibe of her last outing Pick Me Up Off The Floor which was released early in the early pandemic days of 2020.

Review: The fact Sophie Zelmani has had her work poached for hyper-emotional TV and movie spots, from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek, to Independence Day, speaks volumes about how much heart and soul she packs into the songs themselves. Made to make you feel, her self-titled debut LP landed in 1995, and immediately catapulted her from suburban life in her native Stockholm, and out into the common conscience of global listeners. First arriving in 2002, Sing & Dance was Zelmani's fourth studio album, and by this point a real identity had been formed. Fusing soft rock, country, adult alternative, folk, and quirky pop, at her softest she'll lull you into a waking dream of beauty and heartache, at her most upbeat it feels like you've wandered into a fire lit bar just as the locals reach fever pitch.

Review: Sarah Jarosz' seventh full-length LP Polaroid Lovers comes to blue and green splatter vinyl, as the complementary edition to the standard LP and CD versions. Jarosz' album captures essences of the most fleeting moments of life, analogous (literally) to the candidness of most moments caught on instant film. Yet the album also finds nearly endless profundity in those moments, mirroring the eternalizing effect that Polaroid pictures have on our perception of time and memory. Despite being made up of snapshots of different romantic experiences lived over a lifetime so far, all songs on the record distill the best of these moments into song, with the singer and multi-instrumentalist effortlessly gliding over each subject as if leafing through the photo book, year by year, reliving each moment in a purely removed way, without its in-the-moment travails.

Consisting of 13 tracks, the album is made up of solo and acoustic re-recordings of his most well-known songs, including 'I'm The Ocean', 'Burned', 'Homefires' and 'My Heart', establishing a nice, nostalgic throughline between the early 2020s and the late 1960s. Review: It's widely agreed that Island is one of the best works in the sprawling Current 93 catalogue. David Michael Tibet's quest into the more mysterious dimensions of our existence has yielded all kinds of musical results, but Island has a certain clarity and direction which lands beautifully. Created in 1990 alongside Icelandic composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, it's an odyssey of technoid synthesis and orchestral poise, guided by strange narration and backed by some astounding singing. You'll instantly be able to recognise the tones of a young Bjork calling through the mist on opening track 'Falling' and it's quite something to hear her indomitable voice held back in the mix. That's the level this astounding album operates at, now carefully reproduced and reissued by House of Mythology.

Review: Joni Mitchell's Song To A Seagull was a stunningly poetic debut in 1968. It unveiled her remarkable songwriting and folk sensibilities tp the world and set her in motion to become the towering figure she remains today. The album, produced by David Crosby, features Mitchell's introspective lyrics and intricate guitar work. With ethereal vocals, she crafts vivid narratives exploring love, freedom, and self-discovery. The title track, a gentle ode to nature, sets the tone for the album's contemplative atmosphere. Mitchell's ability to blend intricate melodies with profound lyricism establishes Song To A Seagull as a harbinger of her influential and enduring career, laying the foundation for the ensuing evolution that saw her grow ever more revered in her field

'Northern Attitude' sums up his approach perfectly, juxtaposing moments of tender fragility with powerful, driving surges of chorus that could fill a stadium. This balance of intimacy and bombast is precisely why he's such a success story, crafting the kind of songs that can burrow into your heart and wind up soundtracking an emotive scene in a future summer blockbuster. There's been a wait for this limited chestnut brown edition of the album, but here it is, pressed up and looking as fine as it sounds.

Review: Reissued again (following an initial 2009 run) via Light In The Attic, It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You The Best is the debut album by American folk blues musician Karen Dalton, originally released in 1969 by Capitol Records. The Native American singer made her mark on the seventies folk scene through a distinctly yearning sound, evoked through an unmistakable, tremolo'ing alto. On the album, her voice, exemplary of this, effortlessly pokes out from each quiet miasma of guitar, a template soon to be fleshed out by latter-day chart-toppers such as Lacy J. Dalton (whose name is a tribute) and Bob Dylan. Covering classics by Lead Belly, Fred Neil, and Tim Hardin, this is tender, one-of-a-kind country folk, with this edition coming as an all-analog version featuring remastered audio from the original Capitol masters.

Review: You can always count on Wah Wah to unearth the rarest of gems and give them the ceremonial release they deserve. Randy Rice originally released To Anyone Who's Ever Laughed At Someone Else in 1974 as a private press recording printed in an edition of just 500. As is the way with such cult records, it's slowly permeated music culture thanks to the haunting beauty and idiosyncratic nature of the songs until a critical mass of appreciation inspires a reissue such as this. Remastered with a light touch, this subtly surreal offering takes classic 70s Americana into unique zones, with Rice's fragile songwriting and singing binding the record together as a heart-rending listen which is poised to charm a whole new audience.

Review: It's not often we get next generation county, even less when it has such wild crossover appeal - both in terms of mainstream and more niche tastes. When Rolling Stone magazine spotlit Daniel Donato as a Hot Picker in 2023, the rock & roll bible explained how he had dazzled tourists with covers "in Music City's honky-tonks as a teenager," referring to his formative years playing around Nashville, and was now "eager to take fans on a psychedelic journey". Suffice to say, the Cosmic Country thing certainly fits the bill, although this is a case of surrealism playing second fiddle, or guitar, to the kind of soundtrack that feels destined to take this artist to the very top of the popular country list. Which isn't to say anything here is remotely throwaway - we're talking highly complex instrumentation. Nevertheless, it's impossible to imagine anyone walking away unhappy, so take from that what you will.

Review: In the mid-80s, Svitlana Okhrimenko, Oleksandr Kohanovs'kyi, and Tamila Mazur, students at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music, formed the foundation of Cukor Bila Smert. Their blend of music and camaraderie led to the addition of Eugene Taran, who further helped shape the band's vision. Dubbed Sugar - White Death, their ironic moniker challenged media sensationalism and amidst endless musical exploration, they crafted two albums in 1988 and 1989. The band's unique "sugar calypso sound" emerged, a blend of Kohanovs'kyi's music and lyrics by Okhrimenko and Taran. A significant studio session in 1990 yielded tracks featured on the Mannered Music compilation which sparked international interest. Their journey concluded in 1993 with the release of "Selo" by Koka Records, and now some of the best bits make it onto this new collection.

Review: As part of Atlantic Records' 75th Anniversary celebration, the label has launched an extensive year-long vinyl series featuring 90 releases spanning the entire history of the company, from its earliest days until the present. Of these emerges this latest reissue of Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut album, first released on the label all the way back in 1969. The album features some of CSN's most well known and iconic songs; 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,' 'Marrakesh Express,' 'Guinnevere,' 'Wooden Ships,' 'Helplessly Hoping' and 'Long Time Gone.' This album saw a shift in sound to what was popular at the time - blues based rock - opting for a more folk rock, and sometimes jazz-based sound. It would lay the foundations for the California Sound that would be popularised out of Laurel Canyon in the '70s. Artists such as The Eagles, Jackson Browne and Fleetwood Mac would take inspiration from the sound of this record.

The under-heralded 1992 album, Dylan's first solo acoustic album in nearly 30 years and first all-covers effort in nearly twenty years, can be seen as a prophetic prelude to what has become the Nobel Laureate's celebrated late-career arc. It's also an absorbing continuation of the custom Dylan has embraced since he first picked up a guitar.

Review: The 1971 classic album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Blue is widely thought by many music lovers to be one of the best albums of all time. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.
