Old Peel
Old Peel (limited 7")
Cat: 4AD 0240S2. Rel: 09 Jul 21
Old Peel (3:21)
Old Peel (alternate version) (3:09)
Review: Aldous Harding, known to some as Hannah Sian Topp, might be New Zealand's answer to Cate le Bon, although we really don't like to draw reductive comparisons and consider everyone to be completely individual, even if they do both have a sweet and tender but unkept psychedelic atmosphere about their rock 'n' roll offerings. The kind of tracks that make you feel timeless, Harding is perhaps more gentile and less likely to explode into rugged riffs, but nevertheless the similarities in vocal tones are quite clear.

That's certainly no bad thing, as this single proves. Harding's voice is perfectly tempered, almost hushed, and yet only the strongest and most determined could even try to hear past it. Instrumentally, Old Peel is an infectious piece of work to say the least, the kind of thing you think you've heard before and yet are convinced you've actually heard very little like it.

Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (4:39)
Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (Visible Cloaks remix) (4:54)
Review: 'Kajyadhi-fu bushi' is actually a Japanese wedding song. It was first written and recorded in 1977 by Jazz man Jun Arasaki and his Nine Sheep collective. They did it in one take - which is the one you hear here - across an array of unusual (at least here in the west) instruments such as five sanshin, four winds, piano, bass, percussion and drums. It's a sombre, slow-motion lullaby that is imbued with subtle joy. Next to the original, a Visible Cloaks remix up the ambient beauty and makes it feel more cosmic and expansive.

Daaaaaali ! (4:01)
Age Reel (6:23)
Review: If you were to take one hundred imaginary Daft Punk fans, blindfolded them and played them 'Daaaaaali !' - a charming instrumental, founded on several simple, interwoven and decidedly acoustic guitar figures - you'd reckon none of them would be able identify that Thomas Bangalter was the man (behind the robot) behind the music. And they probably wouldn;t fare much better with the B-side of this 10" single, 'Age Reel'; a curious choice for inclusion, as it's essentially an elongated version of the same theme. Our fictitious friends might have surmised that 'Daaaaaali !' was related to the surrealist artist Salvador Dali; the title track from Quentin 'Mr Oizo' Dupieux' 2023 "real fake biopic" comedy.

Catching Stars (4:56)
Review: Estonian rock band Centre El Muusa hail from Tallinn and in vitally started out as experimental electronic duo Centre Electronique Muusa before evolving into the current set up in 2018. They have dropped a couple of tasty albums since 2020 and now contain with their explorations and fusions of the worlds of jazz, rock, folk, world and country with hints of kraut on the new 7" for Funk Night. 'Moonlight Horses' is a psyched out world of campfire guitars and star gazing riffs that leaves you feeling fully hippie-d up. 'Catching Stars' then heightens the trip with more angular guitars and a big wall of garage-rock sound.

Review: Recorded in 2022 for the BBC's Gideon Coe show, 'Christmas In Atlantis' is the Portland, Oregon band's first Christmas track; released just in time to battle it out for a Christmas Number 1. Ahead of their fourth LP, for which they will be touring in 2024, the song comes to us as a heart-rending slow funk number, with the sultry, up-close, and breathy vocals of Amy Boone retelling a complex tale of sorrow, conspiracy, casinos, and a restored faith in the Christmas spirit, in spite of it all. The single features two other exclusive tracks that will also not feature on the next album.

Review: The 7" from Third Man Records features two previously-unreleased takes of the song 'Blind Willie McTell' with the a-side being totally exclusive to this Record Store Day Special. The b-side will also, in time, be included on Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980-1985). Session musicians Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare all play on the tune which was the first one worked on during the Infidels album sessions. Bob Dylan's voice is at its whiny and idiosyncratic best here as his harmonica rings out, rolling drums set a slightly country-sousing groove and electric guitars flesh out the track.

Drunken Trees dates from that time - 2008 to be precise - and was the duo's first physical release. As this delicious yellow vinyl reissue proves, the mini album remains as charming and warming as ever. Confident, accessible and addictive, the set's eight songs offer gentle blends of folk, country and Americana that are capable of putting a smile on the face of even the most miserable of listeners.

Patrick Fitzgerald - "Punch" (3:36)
Jello Biafra & Motorpsycho - "Punch" (3:57)
Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Jolene (3:58)
Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Review: Omena once again calls on the superb sounds of Golden Retriever for this adventurous new EP that very much takes you away from the here and now and deposits you somewhere warmer. 'Part Lake' opens up with the joys of a spring day - acoustic strings rippling out as sun beams down. 'Andro Dunos' slows to a crawl and has a more star-gazing feel while 'Digambara' is a gentle rhythm that casts you out to sea. Two variations of 'Modulations' allows you to get lost in some lush synth tapestries and 'Kizuna Encounter' then ends with another lovely sonic day dream that empties your mind.

Side A features the previously unreleased 1966 ye-ye inspired burner 'I Ought To Stay Away From You', paired with her latter-day viral smash 'Why Do I Cry'. The American singer-songwriter's breathy ahhs and lackadaisical delivery is on full display here, making for a notable contrast with the songs' needy tone of voice. Pleasing baroque pop backings, tempered by chirrupy flute and skipping drums, make for an equally surreal effect.

Review: Non-commercial folk sounds aren't exactly having a moment right now. Although over the past decade elements of the genre have featured within music at the heights of mainstream success, in reality the genre itself, in its truest forms, has been left to languish as an outsider form, save for a few breakthrough names.

Quite what the future holds for Cassandra Jenkins is unclear, then, although if there's any justice the talented singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist will get her dues. As this two-tracker proves, her work is incredibly imaginative and wholly transportive, painting vivid colours from a culmination of keys, strums and sound effects, the overall tone here somewhere between jazz, folk, and waking up in a fantasy world surrounded by woodland creatures.

At The Border, Guy (7:02)
Review: To the uninitiated, 'Johnny Appleseed' is just a great rock 'n' roll track masterfully made by Joe Strummer with his post-Clash band, The Mescaleros. But the song is incredibly significant in terms of the main man's timeline. This, after all, is the same tune he sang at Acton Old Town Hall in London on 15th November 2002, with the live recording going on to define The Hellcat Years, an album released to mark what would have been his 60th birthday.

That gig was also one of the last he ever played, passing away shortly after, on 22nd December 2002. More so, Mick Jones joined him on stage at the event, the first time the pair had performed together since the latter left The Clash back in 1983. As for this Record Store Day Black Friday edition, it's the perfect way to remember what made this particular effort so captivating.

It features the title track from the US folk rock talent's third studio album in its original form and as a 'Live Lounge' version. Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

What You Won't Do For Love (4:23)
Review: Over the last few years, Honolulu label Aloha Got Soul has done a terrific job in highlighting the distinctively soulful, sun-kissed lilt of Hawaiian music old and new. Here the label welcomes back local lad Nick Kurosawa, a singer-songwriter whose 2018 album Home remains one of the imprint's most magical releases. In fact, these two superb cover versions were first showcased on that set, though this is the first time they've featured on a seven-inch single. On side A you'll find Kurosawa's brilliant acoustic soul interpretation of Sam Cooke classic 'I'll Come Running Back To You', a stripped-back interpretation brought to life by the artist's superb lead vocal. On the flip he delivers a similarly sparse, soulful and richly emotional version of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love'.

Review: Australian label Efficient Space come through with a stunning reissue of this seriously off-the-radar slice of heartworn, soulful folk rock from Tresa Leigh. It's hard to know exactly when the record came out - in some ways it sounds strikingly modern, but also could come from the Mazzy Star era of downcast indie rock or indeed somewhere back in the 60s, which is most likely given the Lyndell label the 7" originally came out on. 'Until Then' is one of those songs which gets under your skin instantly, while 'I Remember' has a similarly powerful effect - a true record out of time and more than worthy of the reissue.

Review: Lo Escucho Lo Pinto translates into English as I Hear It I Paint It. It's a clever name for this record, once you know the full back story. The work is a collaborative effort on the part of Lithuania-based musician Sholto Dobie and KYE affiliate Glorias Navales. It was made in Chile last year, or at least recorded there, and takes the form of unannounced live public performances, captured on disc. Audiences were not told nor were expecting two artists to take up instruments and serenade them, but it's hard to imagine anyone complaining.

Perhaps more appropriate phrasing might be I See It I Play It, but it doesn't take much thinking to understand where the pair were coming from with the title. Improvised meditative guitar-focused folk that could almost go unnoticed amid the mess and mayhem of an outdoor metropolitan setting, once you're tuned in it seems to command every ounce of your concentration and proves inescapably compelling. Remarkable and beautiful, not to mention irreplaceable - much like the life we walk past every day.

Review: Sometime Phenomenal Handclap Band and Paqua member Quinn Lamont Luke doesn't release new music all that often (his last solo single, at least under his given name, appeared in 2017), but what he does put out is always on-point. This surprise single on long-serving Japanese label Flower Records is well worth checking. While undeniably Balearic - in-keeping with much of his work - 'No Getting Over You' is rooted in Americana (he hails from California, though has been based in New York for many years), with his own eyes-closed harmonic vocalisations and acoustic guitar motifs rising above woozy electronics and a shuffling, soft-focus drum machine rhythm. Tokyo-based Brit Max Essa provides the accompanying remix, which is naturally even more Balearic and soft-focus than Luke's excellent original mix.

Review: Canadian singer-songwriter June McDoom makes something rather unclassifiable; poppy-noisy smatterings of sound and melody with influences from jazz, blues and soul, but combined in such a way as to not be as easily categorisable as that combination might normally make out. Her latest self-titled project here collects a slew of personal intimations and ballads reflecting a wealth of young life experiences, relationships and emotions. The extent of its sensitivity can only be sought in between the grit, as there's a deep well of texture embedded in every track, but listen between the lines (and take a peek at its collaborations with artists like Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird), and you'll soon glean a solid idea for its stated, romantic intent.

It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. Finally falling back on their immediate instincts, 'Good People' hears the band and the solo wunderkind sing of tiredness and revelation, making adept use of a dry, driving, sportsmanlike instrumental palette (think hand claps, stomps, gospel harmonies). The title of this upcoming release might not unreasonably suggest decay and decomposition. The first few bars of Entropy instantly dispel any such forebodings. Review: Passing the torch several generations down, Angel Olsen covers 'Something On Your Mind', the Karen Dalton folk standard that went on to bewitch solo songwriter greats like Bob Dylan. Back to back with Dalton's original recording, LITA have achieved a marvellous work of contrast on this new addition to their 7" covers series. Remarkably, the two recordings sound as timeless as each other, with the remastering job rendering both so impeccable that they could have easily originated from the same time. With Dalton's drum-backed original dealing in themes of unspoken thoughts and deeply buried, bottled-up emotion, Olsen lends a newly note-quivering, glissandoing, beatless sheen to the song. Of course, the best covers are of songs that mean a lot to the covering artist; "'Something On Your Mind' for me is about letting yourself face something that keeps setting you back,", says Olsen.

I'm In A Dancing Mood
Review: The title of veteran singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman's latest EP, Yatasamaroun, is an Arabic word that, roughly translated, means 'lovers talking softly together in the moonlight'. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the title track is a gorgeously exotic, steamy and moonlit affair that fuses North African, Andalucian and Middle Eastern instrumentation with spoken word monologues and Arabic singing. It's a fine, intoxicating musical brew that makes an even greater impact in the included 'Extended Mix' form. Elsewhere across the CD single, 'En La Discoteca Reggaeton' is a jangling, bluesy chunk of global musical fusion that's bold and infectious enough to suggest that it could work on open-minded dancefloors, while 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' sees Richman add his David Byrne-esque lead vocals to a Flamenco-inspired workout.

Review: He might be a wise old rock and roll figurehead now just as well known for being a famous friend of former Present Barrack Obama (if you haven't already, check out the pair's podcast, it is well worth hearing) but the age-defying voice behind enduring anthem 'Born in the USA' still knows how to have a little fun. And it comes in the form of this special bit of white festive wax (a picture disc version is also available on Juno) featuring his take on two Christmas classics. 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' and 'Because The Night' both get gravelly, epic makeovers that will warm your heart on a cold winter's eve.

Review: It seems that Record Store Day 2022 isn't done yet as we get this limited 12" just for the occasion from Sun's Signature. It is an EP of five tracks by vocalist Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins and percussionist Damon Reece who has worked with Spiritualized, Massive Attack and Lupine Howl. The music is an experimental fusion of folk, synth and downtempo and is a fine offering for a debut release. After so long in the works it's a delight to finally have a finished product from this forward looking pair.

Review: Sun's Signature is one of the many diasporic offshoots of the dream pop world trailblazed by the Cocteau Twins and bands like them. The collaborative project of the Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and Bunnymen/Spiritualized percussionist Damon Reece, the duo's debut EP - now reissued on vinyl a year after its digital debut on Partisan - came as a unique curveball for either artist. Five tracks of distinctive chamber pop whirl away on the hi-fi, playing out in a midst of synaesthetically yellow-tinged dream haze, with forensic traces of trip-hop and film music to boot. Afraid netiher of folk harmonies nor huge-roomed drum workouts, the likes of 'Apples', 'Bluedusk' and 'Make Lovely The Day' are sure to go down as enduring additions to the dream pop continuum.

Viimne Ratsu (3:17)
Kuu Maa (3:48)
Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Both have that effortless murmured charm on the vocals, recalling a nostalgic time of European make-do, A10-mic-from-the-junk-store, bottle episodic, rickety recorded goodness.

Almost Careless (2:12)
Review: Tamara Lindeman was at a real transition point in life when What Am I Going to do With Everything I Know was first unveiled. A six track strong EP, here the moodiness and tangible sense of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness that had once emanated from her voice dissipates into equally tender and gentile thoughts on an impending marriage and all that may come with it. For some, an equally troubling time in their lives, for others something to truly work towards and - when it finally arrives - celebrate, either way it's a subject ripe for emotional songwriting.

But in actual fact, Lindeman, her fiance and troupe treat the concept of matrimony with something close to apathy, or at least lackadaisical 'might as well'-ness. The culmination of this record, 'Almost Careless', sees her ask the question 'what if', but in a way that's neither excited nor nervous, but simply filled with inquisitiveness and a matter of fact consideration.

Review: The deep archives of disco legend and synth wizard Patrick Cowley continue to prove inspirational for Dark Entries. Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, was the multi-faceted producer behind numerous disco anthems such as Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, Mechanical Fantasy Box, and Some Funkettes. For the latest addition to this saga, White Trash Boom-Boom, Dark Entries has teamed up with The Stud to release four tracks culled from some of Cowley's earliest rehearsal tapes. In 1972 Patrick was living in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood with Theresa McGinley and Janice Sukaitis, friends of his from New York. In 1973, Theresa and Janice formed White Trash Boom-Boom, an all-female avant-garde performance troupe. Reacting to the Angels of Light and the Cockettes, they captured the spirit of the times: camp, confrontational, and delirious.

Bayou Paradise (2:14)
Review: Whatever the BBE label puts out it is always quality and enjoyable even if it isn't in your usual stylistic wheelhouse. A case in option is this reissue of a delightful little 10981 soft rock 7" by Will & James Ragar. It has a bit of a collector's piece so an original will cost a few quid ad it is basically the only thing the brotherly pair ever put out. 'Forever' is a jaunty bit of folk with a lovely rolling bassline under the lush vocal harmonies. 'Bayou Paradise' has more soul to it, with a Cajun overtone and slow, pirouetting rhythms that are heartwarming to say the least.

Review: Grief can be intensely painful, overwhelming and hard to process, but also provide inspiration for those who make creative expression their life. For Pakistani-born, Brooklyn-based artist Arooj Afhab, the death of her beloved brother provided the inspiration for what some reviewers have called her greatest work yet: beautiful, poignant and soul-aching 2021 set Vulture Prince, which here returns to stores via a deluxe edition that boasts an extra track (the stunning 'Udhero Na'). Deeply emotional, the set pushes her weighty, emotionally inspiring vocals to the fore, with Afthab swapping experimental electronics and leftfield beats for a mixture of acoustic guitars, heavenly string arrangements (harp, violin, uptight bass) and traditional Pakistani instruments. The results are rarely less than stunning.

Review: Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Aroof Aftab presents her third studio album, and a record that has the power to transport listeners pretty much anywhere. While steeped in traditions stereotypically associated with her homeland, ears more attuned will quickly pick up on just how divergent this is. Whether you'd consider it a classical album is down to how you gauge that genre term, we'd say it has grown broad enough over the past century to definitely include this, but ultimately even that seems reductive.

Elements of poetry, ambient trance, jazz, minimalism, and new age, it's a spiritual and musical experience based around themes of discovery, loss, memory, and intimate connections with the Earth. Sonically, that translates as something that's at once sublime and yet also surprising, combining a multitude of influences from aeons of songwriting to create something that could not have existed in any previous era.

Review: After Dinner is like one of those molecular gastronomy adventures, where dishes are both playful and highly complex, not necessarily revealing themselves until the very end. Done with talk of food? Let's just say this is a loose art collective led by a composer called Haco, who were concerned with taking musical plurality and splicing disparate elements together to create a kind of friendly Frankenstein's monster of sound.

And friendly it definitely is. Considered a true one-off of Japanese pop-art rock-avant garde, Paradise of Replica is jaunty, it's amusing, it's beguiling and, ultimately, incredibly immersive. There are moments where the clash of pianos plucked straight from a comedy of manners opera and rough electric guitars (to give one example of the juxtapositions) feel rather strange, but it doesn't take too long for you to get sucked right into the centre of this insane sonic universe.

Review: To live a life with harmony is some of the first lyrics spent on Aldous Harding's anticipated Designer album, and she gives us plenty here. Easy going '90s coastal pop nostalgia is subtly blended into folky storytelling of up-front, breathy vocals, strumming and finger picked guitars, to acoustic drums and various strokes of piano. Patti Smith influences, to Nico, Kate Bush and even Cat Power similarities and inspirations are there to be found on this LP too. And with the New Zealand singer-songwriter already making quite the impression with her Party LP from two years ago, her debut on the always impressing 4AD, this sophomore album looks to conjure up more of her sweet and dreamy flow yet.

But the fact that this record isn't overburdened by elated atmospherics takes nothing away from a quietly powerful, reflective and charismatic piece of work. PJ Harvey comparisons (particularly in relation to 'White Chalk') are bound to present themselves, especially with longtime Peej collaborator John Parish on board, but 'Party' is a dark gem with a lustre all its own. not to mention brio, humour and subtlety to spare.

Review: Experimental guitarist Thomas Almqvist was known across the board for his wide-ranging strung-instrumental skill, and is noted for being a rare player of the 16-string harp guitar. 'Nyanser' is largely considered his greatest album, combining a slew of spiritual dirges for sax, guitar, synth and organ; folk-bossa-nova detours; and beatless meanders for solo, prepared guitar, into a single stew. Also comes the cross-rhythmic drum detour 'Mot Natten' - it truly is testament to a curious musical mind to condense this many influences.

Review: We are extremely thankful of the existence of Altin Gun, a Dutch band who focus their efforts on playing Turkish folk/psychedelic rock. Three albums so far have served to establish their sprawling sound. Their latest, Ask, does particularly well to chuck additional funk and disco edges into the mix - but contemporaneously comes On, a reissue of their debut LP released in 2018. In reissuing it, French label Le Vinyl Club document the band's eureka moment and subsequent splash onto the scene that eventually won them a Grammy. Beautiful cuts such as 'Goca Dunya' hear well-polished takes on trad Turkish folk, but with an added energy and verve brought to the fore by not only an electrifying backing band, but a whopping two vocalists, Merve Dasdemir and Erdinc Ecevit Yildiz.
