Review: Tamara Lindeman was at a real transition point in life when What Am I Going to do With Everything I Know was first unveiled. A six track strong EP, here the moodiness and tangible sense of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness that had once emanated from her voice dissipates into equally tender and gentile thoughts on an impending marriage and all that may come with it. For some, an equally troubling time in their lives, for others something to truly work towards and - when it finally arrives - celebrate, either way it's a subject ripe for emotional songwriting.

Review: It seems that Record Store Day 2022 isn't done yet as we get this limited 12" just for the occasion from Sun's Signature. It is an EP of five tracks by vocalist Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins and percussionist Damon Reece who has worked with Spiritualized, Massive Attack and Lupine Howl. The music is an experimental fusion of folk, synth and downtempo and is a fine offering for a debut release. After so long in the works it's a delight to finally have a finished product from this forward looking pair.

It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. 'Woman' is first with its gentle piano keys and closely mic-ed vocals soothing the soul, while 'Guiding Light' has more upbeat but still lo-fi guitar riffs and 'Wild Heart' is another showcase of the beautifully raw and emotive vocals of lead singer Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford. 'If I Say' is a rousing, heart swelling closer.

Review: Somehow what we have here is a lost MPB gem, but from rural Finland. This is a first-ever reissue of it, 33 years after it was first released by the Brazilian pair of Rosanna Guimaraes Tavares and Zelia Nogueira da Fonseca aka Rosanna & Zelia. They left their home in Latin America in 1988 and headed to Europe where they dropped a wealth of albums in Germany into the mid-2000s. Zelia still make music and the pair sang on a house cut by German mainstay Ian Pooley. They wrote this one while on a short trip to Finland for the local label Maumau Music and it got a regional release at the time - and now makes it onto the world stage.

Review: The title of veteran singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman's latest EP, Yatasamaroun, is an Arabic word that, roughly translated, means 'lovers talking softly together in the moonlight'. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the title track is a gorgeously exotic, steamy and moonlit affair that fuses North African, Andalucian and Middle Eastern instrumentation with spoken word monologues and Arabic singing. It's a fine, intoxicating musical brew that makes an even greater impact in the included 'Extended Mix' form. Elsewhere across the CD single, 'En La Discoteca Reggaeton' is a jangling, bluesy chunk of global musical fusion that's bold and infectious enough to suggest that it could work on open-minded dancefloors, while 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' sees Richman add his David Byrne-esque lead vocals to a Flamenco-inspired workout.

Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Review: Following the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan's recent re-emergence as an artist after an exile of over 30 years, we are proud and excited to release "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", a comprehensive compilation of early recordings dating from the period prior to Vashti's classic "Just another Diamond Day" album which was originally released 1970. Titled after Vashti's (Jagger/Richards-penned) debut single which opens the compilation, this double-album represents an attempt to both open out and draw a line under the past, and also to try to set the record straight about the disparity between how Vashti viewed (and still views) herself against the way she has been popularly perceived. Widely construed as a folk singer - a tag she fundamentally disagrees with - these recordings instead reveal Vashti as a pop singer, however 'fragile' and unique. A complete collection of Vashti's existing early recordings, the album is divided across two discs and features 25 tracks - mostly rescued from a number of old acetates and quarter-inch tapes Vashti's brother John had found in his attic a few years ago.

Review: 'We had drugs, we had booze' is what perhaps receives the biggest ovation on this live album taken from a 1976 Neil Young American tour. The 22-track album includes live recitals of all-time classics "Heart Of Gold", "After The Gold Rush" and "The Needle & The Damage Done", but sadly, no "Rockin' In The Free World" this time round. Neil Young devotees will also be pleased to learn of "No One Seems To Know", a number that has not appeared on any other official release. Just like a live concert too, the most entertaining parts of this album are usually heard between the songs, with Young joking that this could last as long as George Burns' cigar.

Review: As we tick over in 2019 it's been some five years since the release of The Delines' lauded debut album Colfax. The six-piece did come out with the The Scenic Sessions in 2015, and while its members have simultaneously remained active pursuing music elsewhere, there's no denying this Imperial album is what everyone's been waiting for. With swathes of piano keys and strings adding the country blues melancholia of the music, the album paints a picture of times in transitional seasons, maybe somewhere in the midwest; be it winter-to-spring or summer-to-autumn. The slow swaggered back-beat of "Where Are You Sonny?" is a real whiskey soaker, while the emotional twang of "Roll Back My Life" should strike a chord or two, too. Hit dem blues.

Review: Given that he's been delivering DIY releases as Kitchen Cynics since the late 1980s, it can be to know where to start with Alan Davidson's vast back catalogue. Happily, the Trilogy Tapes has come up with a solution: Beads Upon an Abacus, a career retrospective compiled by Jack Murphy that offers an excellent introduction to the Aberdeen-based artist's distinctive work. It's well worth checking, too, because Davidson's trademark style -a lo-fi and hissing blend of rudimentary electronics, hazy folk revivalism, layered guitar-scapes and oddly traditional instrument choices - is never less than invigorating, alluring and hugely entertaining. If you've yet to bathe in his unique musical explorations, don't sleep on this fine compilation.

Ward's re-reading of Billie Halliday's 1958 album, Lady In Satin, wears poignancy on its sleeve, teaching us things can be beautiful again, even if they seem broken. By the time she made the record, Halliday had damaged her voice through alcohol and drug abuse, but her efforts were still mesmerising (albeit somewhat divisive). Now, more than 50 years on, a man with a larynx at the softer end of the spectrum takes on that playlist, reordering and rethinking in the process.
Save for 'The End of a Love Affair' all the parts of Halliday's masterpiece are here, but they sound resolutely different. Not least far quieter. Passion runs throughout, indicative of Ward's deep love for the source material and the emotional quality that pervades all his work. Review: Jeff Tweedy recorded Love Is The King in his Chicago home in April of 2020. All around him was a mixture of treasured instruments and loved ones which gave him some sense of normality at a time when the world around him was anything but. The record - a "beautifully honest ode to love and hope" - comes two years after his last and is full of warming, comforting folk and country songs with frayed edges and a live-in atmosphere. It's a record that offers musical solace and is another fine entry into Tweedy's rich discography.

Review: Arabic funk, soul and folk specialists Habibi Funk are masters at digging deep to find extremely rare and unreleased music. Even so, their latest offering is particularly obscure. It's a retrospective of 1970s material by a Lebanese singer-songwriter called Roger Fakhr, who put out one self-released tape in the mid 1970s, of which only 200 copies were ever made. Some of those songs feature on this retrospective, but the majority of the material is unreleased tracks from Fakhr's archive. Interestingly, the majority of the music on offer is sung in English rather than Arabic and sits somewhere between American railroad blues, English revivalist folk of the sort popular in the late '60s and early '70s, sun-soaked Californian folk, and gentle folk. A genuinely eye-opening musical treat.

Review: It's almost unfathomable more people haven't heard of Beau. Without question one to the finest living (recording) musicians on the face of the planet, the guitar master has been putting albums out since (drum roll) 1969, with his most recent, The Methadone of Our Time, arriving in 2021. The Leeds-born folk and folktronica legend's work rate is so high, in fact, that he regularly delivers more than one LP in a year, with 2013 among the bumper calendars in which he managed to bestow no less than six full-length-ers on fans.

Review: It's October 2020 and two Bills decide to do a cover version of the 1967 Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) protest track 'Blackness of the Night'. A fitting choice given at the time the world was stuck in a strange recurring nightmare, defined by confusion, isolation, and pessimism, the track was not only appropriate, it was wonderfully re-read by the artists bringing it into the present day.
And they didn't stop there. Soon, there were more new versions of old greats coming from the pair, and the smart money was always on an album arriving at some point in the future. Well, that point is now, and finally we have it. Better yet, this is every bit as lovely as we could have hoped. Combining elements of pop, folk, blues, country, gospel, and rock, it's accomplished, sophisticated, and hugely enjoyable.

Review: Midlake fans can finally rejoice as the band's long-awaited new record, For the Sake of Bethel Woods, has land don Bella Union.It comes as a deluxe package with white, heavyweight vinyl and an accompanying European tour this spring. As with many albums of these last few years, this is one consumed by ideas of loss, isolation, hope and community. It is the group's fifth LP and first in almost a decade after 2013's Aniphon and is full of immersive warmth and musical mystery. They seem to have a fresh intent and purpose in these tracks which boast psychedelic space-rock and sticky guitars. lush harmonies and plenty of light and dark contrasts.

Review: Branko Mataja manages to draw many comparison for his music, even though it is hugely original. Everything from Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western to the electrified belly dance sounds of Omar Khorshid via homemade 90s bedroom psychedelia colour his groves, which are enchanting and mystic. The artist hails from Belgrade, spent World War 2 in a German work camp and after escaping managed to live out his days in North Hollywood.He made his own guitars in the 1970s, which lends this music its charm, and taught himself to play in order to pay homage to his ancestral home of Yugoslavia.

There is a mystic, physic energy to these long, drawn out pieces, often layered up with trance-inducing drones and string lines of ever evolving percussion next to flute sounds, wind instruments and plenty of strings. It is utterly intoxicating and esoteric and takes you deep into an ancient world of sound and rhythm.

Review: The rather twee artwork of this album doesn't do the music justice (and anyway, back in those days it was standard practice as many albums used template covers as a way to cut costs of pressings.) Summer Brings The Sunshine is a glorious country rock album from the unwieldy location of Missouri which is where Jimmy Carter laid it down in amongst farmland. His own leads are backed by superb female backing singers, while his pedals do plenty of work and his feisty guitar licks make for some killer upbeat hooks. This is beautiful and cosmic American music that takes you stateside in an instant.

Review: Fresh from the release of two tip-top twelves on Handy Records and Wolf Music, Malik Kassim brings his trademark Retromigration sound to the freshly minted LYAM label. Typically warm, woozy, bass-heavy and with plenty of intricate musical details - think Ron Trent, with a dash of the Burrell Brothers and the Detroit deep house swing of Andres - all four cuts are superb examples of the Dutch producer's approach to dancefloor dynamics. Highlights include the laidback, club-ready bump of 'Heat it Up', where undulating acid lines and synth-sax catch the ear; the shuffling, broken house sparkle of 'You Want That' (a genuinely sumptuous late-night delight smothered in spacey synth solos); and the mid-tempo, jazz-funk style title track, where loose-limbed live instrumentation and emotive solos come to the fore.

Review: The story of Tia Blake is more than a little enigmatic. Apparently she was an American teenager in Paris in 1970, and she somehow ended up securing a recording contract for a small clutch of public domain folk compositions which resulted in this stunning album. Blake performed one concert in support of the album and returned to North America the next year, leaving behind any potential career as a folk singer. Mores the pity, because this album is an arresting trip through traditional songs guided by Blake's captivating voice, which calls to mind Vashti Bunyan's dusky fragility albeit in a lower register. It's not been in print on vinyl since 1971, so don't expect these gems to stay around long.

Review: Try Googling Influenza Pods in 2022 and you're unlikely to find the work of Bruno De Angelis and Giovanna Gulinello anywhere close to the top of the results. Add Memoire, the title of this LP, and things get even worse, with scores of pandemic diaries on offer for the grisly-minded. However, do a little digging and you'll soon realise these guys were among the pioneering electronic outfits of the late-1970s and 1980s, with this particular record a case in point.
Together the pair became a couple after moving to London, stayed there for a bit before heading back to Italy, where things began to formalise in terms of studio output. Often using recordings of dialogue from British soap operas, strange sounds and funky noises, they create heavily textured, subtly rhythmic and resolutely leftfield pieces that don't immediately invoke other artists and outfits. Review: Kazuki Tomokawa is one of the most enigmatic figures in Japan's modern musical history. Not only a poet and a singer, he's also a bicycle race commentator and a self-described vagabond, and in the 70s he set his poems to music as Japan enjoyed something of a folk music boom. It was 1975 when he recorded his first album, in particular teaming up with percussionist Toshiaki Ishizuka for a fruitful musical partnership. Blank Forms has been diligently reissuing much of Tomokawa's music, and now they're turning their attention to this deluxe three CD boxed set comprised of Finally, His First Album, Straight from the Throat, and A String of Paper Cranes Clenched between My Teeth.

Review: Here's a treat for all those who love blues and American folk music of the 1960s - a collection of previously unheard material from the late Karen Dalton and her frequent collaborator (turned romantic partner) Richard Tucker. Rescued from long-lost, but recently rediscovered, tapes, the material on show captures Dalton and Tucker performing live at iconic Boulder folk club The Attic in January 1963, and at a benefit concert for Congress For Racial Equality a year or so later. The recordings are intimate, magical and highly atmospheric, featuring a mixture of previously unheard Dalton songs and duets with Tucker. It's a brilliant snapshot of not only a moment in time, but also the vibrancy of America's folk revival of the 1960s. In a word: essential.

Review: Melbourne-via-Blue Mountains singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin's new album Pre Pleasure was recorded in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin, who has worked with the likes of The Weather Station and The National. Her reputation as a fine - and direct - lyricist is cemented now and together with bassist Ben Whiteley and guitarist Will Kidman, she's made an album that further enhances it. Review: The 50th anniversary of Deja Vu by Crosby, Stills & Nash gets marked with this specially celebratory reissue. It has been remastered for the occasion and comes with original artwork. Back when this one was released first in March 1970 by Atlantic Records, the record soon went on to top the pop album chart for a week and generated three Top 40 singles. These are the well known 'Woodstock', 'Teach Your Children', and 'Our House' while many other highlights also feature. A timeless classic for sure.

Review: Two-Piers is one of those very special imprints that has tasked itself with unearthing the kind of gems people who compile movie soundtracks only ever seem to be able to find. Calling everything here 'rare' would be overstating it - we have legendary household names in the form of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, and Tim Buckley, to name but a few. But nothing here is an obvious choice, calling to mind a bygone age when you could still find yourself discovering new material by chart-toppers years after falling in love with them because access to everything was limited. Aligned by a feeling - late nights spent stargazing with equally obsessed musos - what's here is marvelously timeless.
