Review: Cult folk funk opus from two Hawaiian sons of a dolphin whisperer, this self-titled album was written and released 45 years ago but still sounds just as calming, alluring and mystical as ever. The dreamy flutes and staggered tempo of "Wake Me In The Morning", the gutsy ballad and soaring strings of "Joe Arnold", the staccato bluesy pop of "Katy" and the positively Balearic classic "High Tide"... Moments like this will always resonate. The only album the Batteaux brothers ever released, relatively rare and prone to bootlegs, this is the first official re-release in over five years and a great chance to catch up.

Review: Following the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan's recent re-emergence as an artist after an exile of over 30 years, we are proud and excited to release "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", a comprehensive compilation of early recordings dating from the period prior to Vashti's classic "Just another Diamond Day" album which was originally released 1970. Titled after Vashti's (Jagger/Richards-penned) debut single which opens the compilation, this double-album represents an attempt to both open out and draw a line under the past, and also to try to set the record straight about the disparity between how Vashti viewed (and still views) herself against the way she has been popularly perceived. Widely construed as a folk singer - a tag she fundamentally disagrees with - these recordings instead reveal Vashti as a pop singer, however 'fragile' and unique. A complete collection of Vashti's existing early recordings, the album is divided across two discs and features 25 tracks - mostly rescued from a number of old acetates and quarter-inch tapes Vashti's brother John had found in his attic a few years ago.

Review: Good things from those who wait, someone should have definitely said at some point. For Bill Fay, who had both the privilege and the nightmare of being able to choose from some 40 years of material to put this together. Amazingly only his third LP, arriving 50 years after his debut, at 76-years-young he has clearly mastered the art of keeping things simple in order to be truly, staggeringly powerful. It's unforgettable stuff to say the least. Tender vocals, gentile guitar, delicate pianos and little more, aside from some incredibly evocative lyrics. Works such as "I Will Remain Here" and the title track summarise Fay in many ways. Songs about ancient, mysterious places and histories imagined and real, our poet-cum-troubadour acting as both guide and accomplice to the act of marvelling at it all. Records like this literally don't come along everyday, and we should treasure every moment of them.

  7. The Power Of Love (4:45)
Review: Red House Painters' founder turned-rightly-celebrated solo troubadour Mark Kozelek presents the latest album in his prolific back catalogue, and it's as consistent as ever. Teaming up with violinist and singer Petra Haden for the pair's first joint recording, the seven tracks presented here are as musically accomplished and lyrically evocative as you would hope. From the hypnotic pianos and largely-spoken word delivery of woozy opener "Parakeet Prison", to the (more than likely) biographical (and hilariously titled) "1983 Era MTV Music Is The Soundtrack to Outcasts Being Bullied by Jocks", and its sultry, jazz-inflections, the songs are as confident and assured as they are delicate enough to break, had those responsible been remotely heavy handed. Needless to say, they weren't, with every note and word carefully considered, played and sung with love and thought.

Review: There's a timeless quality to the electronica-tinged folk fare Modern Studies make. A familiar feeling and timbre, subtle brass, gentile strings and gradually rising sense of crescendo, often from the quietest of beginnings ('Signs of Use', for example). Combined with male and female vocal harmonisation, it makes for compelling work to say the least. Perhaps folk rock is all wrong, though, if we stick to presumptions and expectation of the term. 'Brother' hazily rolls through a groove-laden five minutes, slowly adding layers of funk-inflected percussion, lunging bass and guitar licks abound. 'She' is an altogether more sombre experience, melodies on a downward trajectory throughout. 'Spaces' adding further depth to a similar arrangement. Earthy and organic, hushed but also loud, it's an accomplished and quietly commanding testament to the power of innovative songcraft.

Review: As Regent Street's lights are hung and the colours green and red take on new meaning, it's the poetic stanzas of Scottish songwriters Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert that usher in a shaded take on Christmas cheer. Bah humbug, no not quite, but an October release around Halloween for this album would make some sense too. It follows 2018's somewhat macabre Here Lies The Body album, with Ghost Stories For Christmas however said to have been the result of impromptu writing sessions from the middle of summer. The better parts of this album may be vignettes, save the title track, but your December poetry to savour nonetheless!

Review: With unabashed portraits adorning the major releases of Ry Cuming's music, the coastal crooner that is RY X on stage is certainly not shy of revealing his rugged sensitivity of swoon, inside and out. A production feat of the highest order, Unfurl, presents an album diving deep in a procession of chords and reverb-drenched vocal work. With flashes of post-dubstep beats in tracks like "Untold" - possibly hinting at his James Blake inspirations - to the profound and effectively melancholic chords in "Body Sun", RY X has delivered an unrivalled album of coastal blues and roots meets contemporary pop and electronica by the way of easy listening and piano. Five Stars.

Review: 'We had drugs, we had booze' is what perhaps receives the biggest ovation on this live album taken from a 1976 Neil Young American tour. The 22-track album includes live recitals of all-time classics "Heart Of Gold", "After The Gold Rush" and "The Needle & The Damage Done", but sadly, no "Rockin' In The Free World" this time round. Neil Young devotees will also be pleased to learn of "No One Seems To Know", a number that has not appeared on any other official release. Just like a live concert too, the most entertaining parts of this album are usually heard between the songs, with Young joking that this could last as long as George Burns' cigar.
