Review: Given the rise in popularity in new school jazz in recent years, it seems a fitting time to welcome back Ninja Tune stalwarts The Cinematic Orchestra. "To Believe" is not only their first album in some seven years, but also one of their strongest releases to date. Opening with the poignant neo-classical/soul fusion "To Believe", the set sees Jason Swinscoe and company attractively saunter between jazz-electronica fusion (Roots Manuva collaboration ("A Caged Bird/Imitations Of Life"), pastoral jazz epics (the sunset ready epic that is "Lessons"), gentle downtempo songs ("Wait For Now/Leave The World"), ambient jazz ("The Workers Of Art") and slowly unfurling dancefloor workouts (killer closing cut "A Promise"). In a word: stunning.

Review: On his second album titled Siku, Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz continues his exploration into ancestral Latin American cosmology, as well as expanding his vision towards new stories and other cultures as sources of inspiration. The title is named after a wind instrument of Andean origin, highly symbolic in ancestral rituals. Cruz merges electronic and organic elements with symbolic/spiritual connotations, plus studies of the samba, cumbia and rhythms of African, Andean and Hindu origin. Hypnotic electronica merges with the folkloric on the title track and "Senor De Las Piedras", traditional music is respectfully explored on charming vocal-led tracks like "Hacia Delante" (with Chato) and he goes deep into the jungle on exotic journeys like "Obsidiana".

Review: At some point over the course of their career, almost every techno producer has begun to look beyond the confines of the club for inspiration. It appears that Lewis Fautzi has reached that point. While his previous singles and albums for the likes of Soma, Figure, BPitch Control and Pole Recordings have largely been rugged, dancefloor-focused affairs, "Insanity Department" is an altogether different beast. Altogether deeper, melodious and introspective, the album's seven atmospheric tracks draw considerable influence from deep electro, IDM, krautrock, neo-classical and off-kilter movie soundtracks. As a result, it makes for beguiling, creepy and often poignant listening.

Review: HVOB's fourth full length, "Rocco", is undoubtedly the Viennese duo's most expansive and ambitious work to date. It's a conceptual work, with the two-disc set's 13 tracks being linked by "connected narratives" that explore "letting go, farewells and new beginnings". While there's a weightiness to the concept, the resultant music is surprisingly diverse, with the duo offering up both all-out dancefloor moments and more reflective home-listening fare that's in turn cheerily positive, introspectively melancholic and wholeheartedly poignant. Highlights include the piano-laden downtempo bliss of "2nd World", a swirling vocal number that increases in intensity as the track progresses - the breakbeat-driven, wall-of-sound sparkle of "Bloom" and the drowsy, heart-aching tech-house-pop of recent single "Panama".

Review: Karen O and Danger Mouse are both serial collaborators, so when this joint album was announced we weren't all that surprised. Even so, we never thought the resultant set would be quite as good as this. Atmospheric, rich and full of songs that variously touch on sweeping cinematic soundtracks, driving Motown soul, fuzzy funk-rock, vintage trip-hop and hazy electronica, "Lux Prima" manages to showcase the best of both artists' talents while refusing to settle on one neatly defined sound. The set's dizzying highs - particularly the near 10-minute title track - are almost breathtakingly good, and there's enough jaunty moments to offset the heart-aching melancholy and emotional pain that's barely concealed throughout.

Review: Is there a more forward-thinking and proudly distinctive outfit in contemporary electronic music than Modeselektor? Certainly, the German duo's latest album - their first studio set for eight years - suggests that they have few competitors for this crown. Underground but accessible, diverse but consistent thanks to the pair's fuzzy-but-polished production, the set sees them showcase a range of cuts that expertly meld club-friendly beats and sounds - think grime, techno, post-electro, acid house and the punchy-but-rubbery rhythms of UK funky - with skewed pop hooks, oddball vocals, hazy electronics and a big dollop of experimental intent. As you'd expect, the results are little less than superb.

Review: Although Abul Mogard has made some stunning albums over the years, in recent times it's his reworks that have been celebrated most. It's perhaps for that reason that Houndstooth has decided to offer up this retrospective of the shadowy artist's most admired remixes. The most notable inclusion is the producer's previously unheard revision of Becoming Animal's "The Sky Is Ever Falling", a stunning, stretched-out soundscape that re-imagines the song as a heart-aching ambient epic. It's almost as good as Mogard's jaw-dropping interpretation of Fovea Hex's "We Dream All The Dark Away", whose fragile folk vocals, ever-intensifying modular synthesizer cycles and layered electronic drones deliver a stunning climax to an impeccable collection of inspired ambient soundscapes.

Review: On his third full-length outing for Ghost Box, Pye Corner Audio man Martin Jenkins offers up a sequel of sorts to 2016's "Stasis". While that featured music inspired by suspended animation, sleep and "cosmic exploration", "Hollow Earth" sees the admired experimentalist heading underground for a spot of "subterranean exploration" and "submerged psychology". Interestingly, while there are plenty of dark and immersive cuts throughout the album - see the John Carpenter style chug of "Descent", the quiet solitude of "Prismatic Gateway" and the clandestine throb of "Dancing Shadows" - it's nowhere near as pitch-black as you'd possibly expect. Instead, he plays around with melancholic melodies and quietly beautiful electronics, a blueprint that results in such poignant and picturesque cuts as "Deeper Dreaming", the bubbly "Mindshaft" and glassy-eyed "Surfacing".

The discs are largely arranged in chronological order, with 1977 solo debut "Flammende Herzen" - a fine collection of breezy, arty, stretched-out krautrock instrumentals, being immediately followed by 1978's more synthesizer-heavy and prog rock influenced "Sterntaler". The next two discs chronicle his 1979 and '82 fusions of krautrock and Berlin School ambient, while the final disc gathers together the prolific German artist's work for the soundtracks of obscure movies "The Robbers" and "Houston".

Review: Since it first appeared in 1998, Ryuichi Sakamoto's sparse and minimal "BTTB" album has been released a number of times, each with a slightly different track listing. This 20th anniversary edition aims to set the record straight, gathering together all 18 tracks that have appeared on the various versions out there on one superb "director's cut" style release. The majority of the set is built around Sakamoto's Erik Satie style solo piano compositions, but there are notable diversions in which his experimental past and present comes through loud and clear. These include the delay-laden mouth harp motifs of "Do Bacteria Sleep?", the spaced-out ambient of "Prelude", reverb-heavy metallic percussion of "Sonata", the music concrete of "Uetax" and a killer piano cover of his old Yellow Magic Orchestra cut "Tong Poo".

Review: Over the last few years, Henry Laufer's releases as Shlohmo have tended to be archival affairs such as anniversary editions of early albums and sets of unheard early works. It's for this reason that "The End", the American producer's first studio set for four years, is such a welcome sight. It's an intriguing excursion, too, with Laufer offering up crunchy, dusty, often lo-fi tracks that wrap arty, indie-rock guitars and bass around lopsided drum machine rhythms, weird electronic flourishes, mind-altering effects and ghostly synthesizer motifs more often found in straight-up IDM releases. It's an unusual formula, but one that results in a string of memorable tracks and one must-check album.

Review: Stretching to a staggering five CDs, "The Threat of Memory" takes a deep dive into the collaborative back catalogue of Nurse With Wound noisenik Steven Stapleton and Current 93 man David Tibet. Discs one to four offer up re-mastered versions of albums released between 1991 and 98, all of which are built around long experimental workouts that variously touch on dark ambient, krautrock, industrial noise, experimental electronica and gothic sound collage. Excitingly, the fifth disc contains previously unreleased demos and alternative versions. There's some gems in here, too, including the shoegaze-inspired psychedelia of "The Dead Side Of The Moon (Part 2 - Alternative)" the trippy krautrock/ambient fusion of "Bubblehead/Dreambreath" and the murky ambient soup of "The Fire Of The Moon".
