Review: Damn! Dark Entries are on a roll! Their latest reissue is of Scotland's Thomas Leer, an early 80's independent artist who recorded "Private Plane" in his bedroom using an extremely limited set-up...the prototypical '80s experimental kid! The tune is dreary, funky and on the abstract side all at the same time, but our favourite is actually "International" thanks to its wonky groove, driving percussion stabs and bursts of distorted jazz flute. On the B-side there's also "Saving Grace", a more poppy affair in that inimitable 80's Karate Kid flair...highly recommended, a 12" worthy of a reissue.

Review: There was a little of Talking Heads about 3 Teens Kill 4, an arty, post-punk combo whose 1983 album No Motive has long been a favourite with dusty-fingered crate diggers. As this Dark Entries reissue proves, the band's vocal style, musical arrangements and love of madcap stylistic fusions drew heavily of David Byrne and company's open-minded and singular approach. This is perhaps most evident on the low-slung dub disco outing "5/4", stripped-back bass-and-drum machine jam "Hut/Bean Song" (whose odd lyrics discuss shaking cans of baked beans) and sample-heavy fuzziness of "Tell Me Something Good". Brilliantly, this edition also features two previously unreleased tracks that were left off the original album.

Review: We are honored to reissue the debut album from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. Carolyn's adventures in sound began with recording stories on a tape recorder at age 9 in 1976. A short time later, exploring the scattering of musical instruments and effects units her father left lying around the family home. She became especially fascinated by his TEAC reel-to-reel recorder that set off a lifelong fascination with sound design. By the age of 16 Carolyn had become inspired by industrial electronic act Cabaret Voltaire, as well as anarcho-punks Crass. Creating the stage name CYRNAI, a rearranging alphabet of Carolyn Fok, she played in several Bay Area bands including Treason, A State Of Mind, Trial and Rhythm & Noise between 1983 and 1991.

In 1983 Carolyn met vegetarian peace punks who changed her course a bit, and which influenced the political aspect of her first release, 'Charred Blossoms.' Although 'Charred Blossoms' was referring to the destruction of war, it was really about the indoctrination process of the human mind. All songs were recorded at her parent's house in the suburbs using her brother's Moog Opus 3, her father's PAiA, Drummer Boy, synths, flute, saxophone and a Rhodes piano. She positioned microphones against amps to get frequency changes. While never physically cutting tape, Carolyn would try and get as many tracks of sound into 4 tracks via many starts and stops. Thus began the CYRNAI sound: music and sound layered, combined snapped together, creating an unintentional new form referred to as 'experimental', though it had no particular intention of experimenting. Rather, it was naturally composing sound almost in a vacuum. The 6-track 12" EP was released in 1985 by Mind Matter Records with a 48-page zine featuring Carolyn's poetry and drawings, re-printed here. For this reissue we've added 8 unreleased bonus tracks recorded between 1980-1984 and included a 6-page press kit with photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: We are honored to reissue the 3rd full length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

In 1987, towards the end of art school, Carolyn won another award from the New York Society of Illustrators. During the trip to New York to accept the award, she met electronic/dulcimer musician, Dan Joseph. After writing some letters they decided to make a split cassette titled 'Hypno-Seizure'. CYRNAI contributed 30 minutes of music to Side A of the cassette, 10 untitled pieces that ran into each other. She had just bought a round-the-world ticket going from China to Europe via Eurails, to Egypt, where she liked to wander. She picked up instruments from several countries and recorded the sounds of her new surroundings. Technology was changing into early sampling and she used a Commodore 64 with large floppy disks to record loops. Originally self-released in 1988, this reissue adds 3 unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the same period. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: We are honored to reissue the 2nd full length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

In 1986 Carolyn moved into her family's building in downtown San Francisco providing a space to develop her own art and music for the next two decades. She was the only tenant of the five story building. The top floor had 36 abandoned rooms with building materials and holes between floors, staircases that created natural reverb. It was during this isolated time that Carolyn would start working on her second release, 'Parts of The Insomnic Wheel,' 60-minutes of ten untitled pieces that ran into each other. This was also the first release on cassette due time constraints of the LP. She spent many nights at the 24-hour diner across the street chatting metaphysics, parallel universes, the 5th dimension and astro-projections. Carolyn would sleep next to paper/pencil and report dream states, experimenting with mental techniques, investigating how far her mind could go. It was a journey to unravel the 'dark night of the soul'. Utilizing her industrial surroundings, Carolyn would bang on sheet metal and record percussion on found materials. Originally released by Ladd-Frith in 1986, this reissue adds 4 unreleased bonus tracks recorded during the same period. Each copy includes a 16-page zine with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

Review: Dark Entries will reissue the first 4 full-lengths from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. The 6xLP box set contains all of Carolyn's officially released music as CYRNAI between 1980-1990, as well as bonus materials. Most of these songs will see their first vinyl appearance ever in a deluxe edition limited boxed set (333 copies). Remastered by George Horn, the set features an exclusive 48-page booklet with photos, quotes, interviews and liner notes written by Carolyn and introduction by Greg Allen (author of 'Klaus Schulze, Electronic Music Legend'). Over 70 songs, 4 hours of music, spread across six records plus an exclusive bonus 7" of cover songs by The Cure and Gang Of Four all packaged in a black matte wrap box with crimson red foil stamping.

Her debut release as CYRNAI, 1985's 12" EP 'Charred Blossoms', followed by the cassette albums 'Parts of The Insomnic Wheel' in 1986, 'Hypno-Seizure' in 1987 and two versions of 'To Subtle-Drive' in 1989/1990.

Despite having been featured in publications including Electronic Musician, Keyboard and with a long term association with Industrial music, Carolyn has remained an intensely private musician, artist and writer until now. However, she has launched an ambitious project that involves releasing her vast archive of music as a 'memoir' via her website memoirofsound.com. Having spent extensive time in the studio amassing around 100 albums worth of electronic and experimental music, field recordings, collaborations, band projects and more, these are now being released in one place. "Her time is beyond due to be recognized, represented and attributed for her contributions to experimental analogue culture with sounds still fresher than tomorrow." Eloise Leigh (New Age Rage, Berlin Community Radio)

Review: We are honored to reissue the 4th full-length from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area.

By 1988 Carolyn's recording gear had many changes and upgrades, from cassette 4-tracks, 8-track reel-to-reel 1/2 inch, a TASCAM 388 to DAT, to floppy disk sampling. She spent three to four nights a week developing sequences for 14 hours from 10pm onwards. Samples would sometimes begin on a Synclavier keyboard with its sophisticated sequencing capabilities. Her fourth album, 'To Subtle-Drive', was self-released in 1988 as 8 untitled songs spread across a 30-minute cassette. Then in 1989 Carolyn discovered the first Digidesign digital recording software and changed the project to have more ethnic sounds and samples stemming from tapes collected during a trip to Egypt. In 1990 'To Subtle-Drive' was re-released with 2 songs from the 1988 release and 4 new compositions. This reissue adds 5 bonus tracks recorded during the same period spread across a double LP set. Each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by Carolyn. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. "Old-soul beat tracks on cassette with time and techno-guilotine songs."

Review: We are honored to release a 5-LP Vinyl Box Set from one of the key figures of New Age music, Suzanne Doucet from her incredible run of cassette only albums from 1982-84. Suzanne was born in Tuebingen, Germany where as a three year old, Doucet discovered her innate artistic gifts. Instinctively, she was always drawing, playing music, singing, and writing. By the age of 18, Suzanne was an established pop star in Germany with several #1 hits. She also made her mark as a composer, actress, TV moderator, director, engineer, and producer. At age 25. she took a sabbatical from the music business to go on a spiritual odyssey. In 1970 she released a triple album of field recordings and mind-expanding psychedelia under the name Zweistein. For the next ten years, she developed her own style of New Age music while exploring many areas of metaphysics and spiritual practices, including astrology, music therapy, tarot, yoga and the Kabbalah.

In 1979, Doucet launched a record label in West Germany named Isis, after the Egyptian goddess of feminine divinity. She formed the duo New Age with her musical partner Christian Buhner, and released the 1982 cassette album 'Transformation', which was inspired by a visit to Findhorn, Scottland. Suzanne and Christian recorded acoustic sounds such as waterdrops and vocals using sophisticated sound manipulation devices and muli-track recording techniques. The only electronic instruments used were the Jupiter 8 and the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The next year the duo began work on the follow-up 'Transmission', which released on cassette in 1983. After this release, Buhner and Doucet moved to Los Angeles, hoping to find more kindred spirits in the burgeoning New Age scene there. Doucet met Tajalli (William Wichman) whom with she would collaborate with on the 1984 cassette 'Brilliance'. That same year Doucet married Video Artist and Yoga instructor James Bell. Together they recorded two albums, 'Reflecting Light Vol. 1' and 'Reflecting Light Vol. 2', using a Roland JX-3P, TR-909 and a Steinway Grand Piano. Both cassettes had mirrored covers, a reference to the Zweistein jacket 14 years prior.

For the first time Suzanne's cassette music is available on vinyl, in a limited run of 300 box sets. Each is stamped with a rainbow foil of the goddess Isis and includes an 8-page full color magazine designed by Eloise Leigh with liner notes, photos and reflections by Suzanne. We also have a small amount of stand alone albums available housed in jackets using the original cassette artwork. All albums have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Doucet's career placed her at the forefront of blossoming New Age Music movement. "People all over the world become more and more inner directed", she says, "New Age Music is the music of the new millennium. We are all pioneers, our work is on the vibrational level, which is the essence of all being. Our inner environment and the outer environment are co-dependent. This is the reason why music is so important for our lives. Whatever I can do to bring consciousness expanding music to as many people as possible, I'll do... and I'll devote my total being to whatever I am doing!"

Review: It's hard to keep accurate tabs on Dark Entries this year, such is the rate at which the West Coast label is reissuing material and the range of music covered. This latest archival endeavour finds Josh Cheon's label once again tapping from the sizeable well marked Tom Ellard/Severed Heads, having previously reissued the Australian band's classic Dead Eyes Opened. This an altogether rarer proposition however, with 80s Cheesecake a rather special reissue of solo material Ellard committed to tape in the early '80s, specifically the self release 80s Cheesecake and Snappy Carrion. Some of the material has been collected for reissue before, most notably on Vinyl-On-Demand's exhaustive Adenoids 1977-1985 boxset, but this Dark Entries edition presents a more affordable insight into some music that still sounds way ahead of it's time some 30 years on.

Review: Bay Area retroverts Dark Entries have presented a few contemporary acts among all their eagerly awaited reissues. Solitary Dancer, Sumerian Fleet, Frank and Helena Hauff being just some. They now present Group Rhoda; the solo electronic music project of Mara Barenbaum. The Oakland based artist has appeared previously on fellow Californian imprints Night School Records and Not Not Fun. She is also one half of Max and Mara. 'Wilderless' is described by Josh Cheon and Co. quite eloquently as featuring 'tones of tropical darkwave and soft industrial, while negating the sound of conformity and control.' Maybe we aren't as deep into the scene to know what that is, but we can certainly vouch that it is modern coldwave and minimal synth that proudly wears the influences of antecedents such as Jeff & Jane Hudson or Deux on its sleeve.

Review: Influenced by her time in the French countryside after a bout of touring exhaustion, the latest release by Caroline Herve is the most spiritual release yet from the artist more widely known as (Miss) Kittin. The electroclash pioneer and techno veteran gives up past formulas on the Cosmos LP, although there is a familiar sound on the moody electro-pop opener "Cosmic Address". Elsewhere, she proves there's variety in her sonic arsenal such as on the precision IDM of "Question Everything" or "Last Day On Earth", to the deep and introspective dub techno on "Multiverse" and the remainder of the album's expressions in organic, leftfield electronica.

Review: Josh Cheon's Dark Entries label plunge once more into the depths of the UK underground in the 1980s and come up the other side with this crucial reissue of A Dissembly by Konstruktivits. A quick history lesson: former Heute man and Throbbing Gristle/Industrial Records associate Glenn Michael Wallis was and remains the towering creative force behind Konstruktivits who are active to this day and have been "perverting your ears since 1980." Of the numerous albums Konstruktivits have been responsible for, it is their debut LP from 1982 that Dark Entries have chosen to reissue here, offering a newly remastered take on A Dissembly that suggests Wallis and associates to be worthy sonic companions to Muslimgauze, Tuxedo Moon, Clock DVA and Throbbing Gristle. The freaks out there will love this one.

Review: We are proud to present the first ever vinyl issue of Jon Krocker's debut album 'Monolog' originally released on cassette in 1983. Jon is from Winnipeg, Canada and got his start as half of the synth noise duo Dialog. In 1981-82, while studying for a BA in Film Studies, he would go to the studio and practice. No writing or patch memories, composing on the fly. His set up consisted of a Minimoog, Oberheim Two Voice, Roland RS-202, Roland Space Echo, EML 400, Roland DR 55, Roland System 100 mixer. After playing some of the songs to Impulse Records store owner Roman Panchyshsyn, he agreed release the album on cassette on Contagious Records. Primarily influenced by the German school typified by artists such as Conrad Schnitzler and Kraftwerk, Jon's music exhibits the cold machine ethic of the neumusik. The 12 instrumental tracks are stark and minimal, at times anxious but overall space orientated and flexible. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy includes an 8-page newsprint zine featuring ephemera, press clippings, photos and liner notes by Jon.

Review: Lena Platonos, born on the island of Crete in Greece, is simply not revered enough these days, often out of the spotlight. However, those who know, know very well what this musician is all about, and of the dynasty she has left to the wider music scene. The 1980s were hers, with more than ten albums having come out in quick succession, before being lost in the depths of the second-hand market; 1986's Lepidoptera, which Dark Entries have reissued wonderfully, is one of her very best works. Irrefutably non-genre and non-wave, this quirky collection of electronic shapes and improvisational ideas hasn't aged a day in 32 years, and there is nothing to suggest that similar sorts of musicians have pushed the boundaries any further. Balanced between exotica and electronica, this is pure Greek music with a twist. Moody, sensual and deeply enriching, this is an album for the ages. Recommended!

Review: John Whybrew, Ian Sharp and Dean Piavani are Portion Control. In case you didn't know about them, they're one of the most influential industrial bands to have come out of the 1980's and have also been a massive inspiration for the likes of Depeche Mode and Skinny Puppy. Moreover, it's their signature brand of rhythmic, mostly instrumental post-punk which has made the music of Craig Leon and others so sought after these days. Originally out in 1982 on Phaze Records, these ten tracks are timeless pseudo-techno jams which will always be coveted by DJs, musicians and samplers alike. Cop it now because the original is rather pricey!

Review: Veteran electronic experimentalist, producer and sound engineer Colin Potter began his career at the turn of the '80s, self-releasing cassettes on the ICR label. 'The Where House?', which here gets the Dark Entries reissue treatment, was one of his earliest releases, originally slipping out - unheralded, of course - in 1981. This first ever vinyl edition includes all 13 tracks from the original cassette release - think far-sighted proto-acid, bubbly electronic soundscapes, curiously strange ambient, backwards tape experiments and instrumental minimal wave throb-jobs - plus a quartet of hard-to-find contemporaneous productions that previously featured on various mid '80s tape releases. Like the original album tracks, they're deliciously out-there and thrillingly ahead of their time.

Review: We are honored to release 'A Boy Alone', a double LP set from Manchester electronic music pioneer Eric Random. Best known for his early recordings for New Hormones and Les Disques du Crepuscule and collaborations with Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks), Cabaret Voltaire and Nico. As an original member of The Tiller Boys with Shelley, Random injected a healthy dose of Krautrock into the dour Manchester post-punk scene in 1978/79 before going solo the following year. Random's first 7" "Subliminal"/"23 Skidoo" was released in 1981 via Les Disques du Crepuscule and explored ominous sonic surrounds. That same year also saw the release of a second 7" single on New Hormones, "Dow Chemical Company"/ "Skin Deep". Both tracks offered bubbling, rhythmic sound patterns, and were the first to feature other musicians that would become know as The Bedlamites. Consisting of Lynn Walton on vocals, Ian Runacres and Andy Diagram of Dislocation Dance, and bassist Wayne Worm, aka Wayne Sedgeman. Their debut 12" single "Subliminal Seduction"/"Bedlam-a-Go-Go" was released in 1982 through Plurex, mixing arid funk textures and sparse melodies. That same year the group contributed proto chill-out track "6.55" to Plurex compilation 'Hours' and the highly filmic track "In Cassette Conference" to the Touch cassette package 'Feature Mist'. In 1983, Random spent several months in the Himalayas with a group of musicians from the Kulu Valley and studied non-Western instruments such as tabla. On returning to Manchester, Random convened a new group of Belamites including Walton, Sedgeman and drummer Graham Dowdall aka Dids of Ludus. They released the 12" single "Mad As Mankind"/"Dream Web Of Maya" in 1984 on Cabaret Voltaire's Doublevision, embracing electronic, industrial and dub styles. In 1985 they contributed the soothing "Pure Power" to Food Records' "Imminent Episode One" compilation. Our reissue also includes 4 unreleased bonus tracks from Eric's archives recorded between 1981-1984. The whole set adds up to 115 minutes of sinister, somnambulant Random music. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a gatefold jacket designed by Eloise Leigh featuring a spread of ephemera, photos with liner notes by James Nice of LTM.

Review: Stratis is an electronic duo from Cologne, Germany, formed by Antonios Stratis and Albert Klein in 1981. They took inspiration from the progressive electronic synthscapes of Tangerine Dream & Vangelis and the proto-techno of Chris & Cosey and Yello, as well as jazz and funk. The duo recorded 5 cassette-only albums between 1982 and 1986 - Exotic, New Face, Musica da Ballo, Film Musik, and Raging Beauty - which were released on their own label Creative Tapes (later called Temporary Music), and which were also licensed to Colin Potter's Integrated Circuit Records (ICR) label.

We are pleased to announce the first ever standalone vinyl reissue of their sophomore album "New Face', which was recorded and released in 1983. It consists of eight future-fixated tracks that could have been composed for movies like Blade Runner or Tron. A wide range of minimal electronics are presented, from robotic synth pop to melancholic cold wave to Neue Deutsche Welle electro. The masters for this reissue came from a new transfer made by Colin Potter at ICR in May 2018, and each song has been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in jacket designed by Eloise Leigh using motifs of the cassette artwork on a neon red background, and includes an insert with lyrics and photos.

Review: Boris Blank and Carlos Peron launch their Tranceonic moniker, and it comes through on the effortlessly cool Dark Entries stable, home to what we would say are the best electronic releases of the last five years. No pressure, then. New Crime is a difficult LP to pin down, or to even begin categorizing under one banner, with each track offering a different and equally delightful strain of electronic psychedelia. To give you a taste, the duo craft their own take on Yello's infamous "Bostisch" killer, which quickly dissipates into the more sparse, imperceptible drum and synth cocktails of tunes like "Police Action In Zurich" or "America Is Happy". Don't worry, though, there's plenty of dance grooves for you to get stuck into, such as the deep ad wonderful "Butterfly". It's a keeper.
