Review: You can always count on Afrikan Sciences to flip the script with what you think soulful electronic music should sound like. Tearing the grid up and pinging off on a cosmic voyage in between the notes, this is futuristic, jazz-minded machine music of the highest order. "Reciprocess" is a shuddering, but surprisingly focused exercise in cracking open the house music structure, while "Hullman Z" gets into a brilliantly futuristic boogie. "Just In Case I Do" takes a more laid back approach without eschewing the essential dose of freakiness, and "Son Shine" takes things in an explicitly broken beat direction with spellbinding results.

Review: Chicago label Chained Library present some contemplative minimal noise experiments courtesy of the mysterious Agnes who presents the 012016002001 EP and it is mastered by the one and only Rashad Becker: which is fitting really. Fans of Becker's recent works will really appreciate these extreme and at times challenging sonic workouts on both sides, approximately 15 minutes each. Both extended pieces are reductionist electronic sound art at its finest. Very intrigued as to what this imprint is up to next.

  2. The McDonald's Prayer (Japan Blues regrind) (5:58)
  3. The McDonald's Prayer (Ossia Milkshake mix) (3:19)
Review: Seb Gainsborough and Chester Giles' ASDA project has been one of our highlights over the last couple of years. Through their punky, deranged aesthetic, the duo have given new meanings to the spoken word disposition and, in the process, left the doors wide open for interpretation. The music scene needs that. We need that. It's as if their work has cleansed the air for us and taken our minds back to a time when genres weren't such a big deal; a palette cleanser, if you will! "The McDonald's Prayer" marks their second outing on for No Corner and, much like The Abyss LP, the tune blazes through poetry with disparate shots of bass and sparse percussion stabs. This is all rendered all the more special thanks to a remix from London's Japan Blues, whose remix duties ever since that pair of bruisers for Place No Blame have become household favourites of ours, and he's on form here; a lo-fi slew of bass moulds around hazy claps and peaceful melodies to create a masterful groove. Ossia comes in for the second remix, this time stretching the original out onto some vintage Metalheadz vibes... minus the breaks. Sick.

Review: With releases on a who's who list of labels that are pushing experimental, underground house and techno including L.I.E.S, Creme Organisation, Echovolt and Strange Life, William Burnett has been steadily putting out releases that have gained a lot of respect without having to shout too loud about it. So much so that as well as running his own stella WT Records label, William is now often cited as a producer's producer. Deep and full of dub aesthetics that encompasses a world of it's own, his music is not just driven by a need to keep the floor moving, but are also about taking your headspace somewhere else. Progressing things a stage further is the Black Deer project. Recently launched, but in gestation for some time, it's introspective slant, plus loose referencing to his upbringing in Texas, allows William more freedom for experimentation. The Last Tortuga is taken from the same sessions that yielded the Willie Burns The Overlord EP on Trilogy Tapes as well as Black Deer's Trail Of Tears EP on Rush Hour, this 6 track EP has been due on the label for sometime, but it's been worth the wait as his sound has developed and expanded to take in ambient, drone and krautrock and highlights his musicianship in a new light.

Becoming Nice (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VV 017. Rel: 16 Mar 15
  1. Becoming Nice
  2. Janice Will Deal With It
  3. Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes
Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

Remixes Volume 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 046-2/MT 013. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Red Axes - "Shake The Mind"
  2. Jamie Paton - "Take Me To The Beach"
  3. Prins Thomas - "Sudaniyya"
  4. Khidja - "Simple Helen" (feat Borusiade)
Review: Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti serve up another round of top shelf remixes and revisions of John Rees Lewis' mid-late 80s project C Cat Trance, following in the wake of the Screaming Ghosts compilation. First up to bat are Red Axes, who bring a seductive line in loose and limber drumming to "Shake The Mind" that should suit the Fourth World dancefloor massive just fine. Jamie Paton brings a tough, clamouring intensity to "Take Me To The Beach," while Prins Thomas takes a truly spiritual approach when weaving the intricate arpeggios and percussion of "Sudaniyya." Khidja and Borusiade team up on "Simple Helen," presenting a dense and hazy trip into exotic territory with sinister undertones.

Remixes Volume 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 046-1/MT 012. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Autarkic - "Screaming (To Be With You)" (feat The White Screen)
  2. JD Twitch - "Dalbouka"
  3. Sneaker - "I Looked For You"
  4. Die Orangen - "Rattling Ghosts"
Review: After teaming up to release the scintillating works of C Cat Trance in their original 80s form on Screaming Ghosts, Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti join forces once again to deliver a ludicrously talented roster of remixers who catapult John Rees Lewis' cult group into thrilling new spatial and temporal zones. Autarkic decides to go for the full-tilt cover version on "Screaming (To Be With You)", with ample help from The White Screen, while JD Twitch roughs up "Dalbouka" into a quintessential slab of ethno-motorik body music. Sneaker's take on "I Looked For You" emphasizes the atmospheric tension in the original, giving the track a cinematic scope, and Die Orangen's "Rattling Ghosts" finishes the record on an appropriately ominous, subtly industrial tone.

  5. HTMDML (6:18)
Review: Certain Creatures in Oliver Chapoy who has appeared previously on Style Upon Styles and was involved in the BM/CC/WW project back in 2014 with Brendon Moeller and Clay Wilson. These five harsh and textural abrasions in greyscale techno are pretty serious; for fans of Shifted and Sigha; pay attention. On the A side it's all about the peak time fury of "Compulsion" which borrows from classic Regis in terms of brutal repetition in all its stripped, compressed and saturated glory like something of his classic Gymnastics LP. On the flip, the title track uses more restraint with its hypnotic and arpeggiated bell melody modulating out of control hysterically, executed as finely as Domenico Crisci has done of late; be warned! Closing track "HTMDML" is guttural electro beats served up as grungy and overdriven as you like and will appeal to Killekill fans.

Interpretations Of Paper Dollhouse (limited 12" + insert)
Cat: SNAP 2. Rel: 27 Nov 14
  1. Paper Dollhouse - Space III (Joe Cocherell remix)
  2. Paper Dollhouse - Drone I (Montalk remix)
Review: Material by London duo Astrud Steehouder and Nina Bosnic, aka Finders Keepers duo Paper Dollhouse, gets pulled into new rhythmic shapes by Joe Cocherell and Montalk on this compelling record for Resilience. Given his background as drummer in DVA Damas and propulsive techno output on Frozen Border, Cocherell is well placed to reinterpret "Space III" as eleven minutes of kraut addled techno that you could easily visualise James Holden closing out a Sonar performance with. Complementing this, Resilience's in-house mystery production unit Montalk take a more abstract approach to "Drone 1", submerging the vocals of Paper Dollhouse in all manner of spectral delay on a remix that forgoes rhythm in favour of all encompassing atmosphere.

Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

  5. Nolan (Regis Self Medicating edit)
Review: With Ben Frost's Aurora album amongst many people's end of year lists, Mute draw together a selection of remixers for this Variant 12" whose collective reputation is every bit as impressive. You really aren't ready for this line up. First up, you got Evian Christ's broken, pseudo-bass version; next, Dutch E Germ transforms the original into a broken, swinging bundle of percussion; while HTRK delivers a fine concoction of steely drum machine licks and kicks on their slower remix. On the flip it's all about the floor, where Kangding Ray calls all the ravers and dishes out the techno servings on his mutation of "No Sorrows", whereas Downwards boss and Birmingham techno pioneer Regis turns up with a hollow, muscled roller for the late hours. All in all, a pretty banging affair.

  4. John Talabot - "Aim"
Review: As part of the mandatory Record Store Day celebrations, Young Turks pull together productions from Jamie XX, Four Tet, Koreless, and John Talabot for a limited 7" release. The more attentive followers of Young Turks will know the music here originates from a commission by artists Sofi Mattioli and Rebecca Salvadori who enlisted the four to provide short compositions for their film Continuum. The two minute productions were available to download for free at the time, but Young Turks obviously felt there was an audience out there that would want the music in a more tangible, and collectible, format. Of the four, it's the rather epic "Horizon" from Koreless that hits the hardest.

  1. Anxiety (5:21)
  2. Scatterbrain (4:53)
  3. Data_Loss (6:06)
  4. Data_Ctrl (3:59)
Review: Chris Weeks has been building up the Kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where CD-r releases reign supreme. He's been a key figure on Ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he's committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. "Anxiety" is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but there's a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. "Scatterbrain" is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like Paradroid have championed in the past. "Data_Loss" strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and "Data_Ctrl" ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music.

Review: Started in 2013, Mollusca Vinyl is a Brooklyn based electronic reocrd label specializing in minimal style, analog laden music. Our folks believe in pushing the vinyl medium as art. This set of compositions has been described as Balearic downtempo with pastoral departures. Written while on several beaches, it suggests the definition of lackadaisical make out music, emoting euphoric post pillow talk feelings-of-the-raw through minimalist synth phrasing, ambient texturing and isolated beats. Artwork by Doroniyam at Azuri Cafe. Mastered by Jason at Transition Mastering UK. Printed at Brooklyn Phono.

  2. E7000 (12:20)
Review: Time 'Love' Lee has been spinning tunes and kicking ass since the late 1980's, and his first productions date back from the early 1990's. That's when he started Peace Feast, among other imprints like Tummy Touch and Boy Scout Recordings, and that's also when he started pushing his own particular brand of loose outsider house. Although the first Peace Feast is from 1994, the label's releasing schedule has been rather sparse and this latest bombshell is only number twenty-four in the series! "Tingle" is a beautifully symphonic piece of music, barely held together by a playful percussion and well-mannered swells of bass. The flip, "E7000" is similarly musical and rich in instrumentation, a true expedition into the ether. Cop!

Review: Nathan Melja drew some favourable attention with choice outings on Mister Saturday Night, Black Opal and Technicolour, but now he's steering his own label Dream Real as a vessel for his wayward but warm sonics. This second release keeps the psyched out tone of his previous work intact, offering up four jams of illustrious synth work and fractured beats for the adventurous souls out there. "Ignore" is a vaporous cut of stuttering drums and fuzzy chord shapes, while "Steam" sports a more clearly defined rhythmic pulse for the deepest house heads. "Raindrops" cools things down to a downtempo lilt, and then "That F Sound" nudges towards a leftfield techno domain that Melja ably makes his own.

Review: Although best known for the quality of their reissues, the Rain & Shine Records crew does put out stunningly good new music now and then. This is one of those occasions. "The Watcher" is the debut EP from 21 year-old New Zealander Arjuna Oakes, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and vocalist who's happy to forge his own path through the worlds of jazz-funk, soul and reggae. It's the kind of warm, woozy and effortlessly soulful musical fusion that has long been associated with artists from New Zealand, though it's fair to say that Oakes does it better than most. In fact, as debuts go it's an absolute stunner.

Review: Given that One Circle is formed the trio of Editions Mego artist Lorenzo Senni, Monkeytown artist Vaghe Stelle and soundtrack composer A:RA, their debut for the consistently excellent left_blank label is as skewed a trip into experimental techno's wormhole as you'd expect from such a union. Whether it's the ectoplasmic Kompakt vibes of title track "Flight To Forever", the stuttering rhythms and euphoric synths of "Delta City" or the Fade To Mind grime via Eurosynth of "Please", there's enough here to make One Circle well worth a look for inquisitive electronic minds.

Review: High Ends returns with an EP by Thomas Romain and his mother: famed free jazz pianist Christine Wodrascka. Christine's style is wholly unique: there are no barriers for her sonic exploration. Sound matter, energy, forms, architecture and emotion all play a part in shaping the style of one the most unique musicians out there. In his own irregular style, Thomas adds a sense of swing to his mother's improvisations. This fusion of acoustic and electronic creates wholly original experimental journeys which will delight the auditory senses of those listening. All these aesthetics are translated into opening track "Tribute To Parmegiani" where the track's namesake just happened to pass away on the day it was produced. It receives a sublime and hypnotic remix up next by Tobias Freund (Ostgut Ton).

Review: Valcrond Video, the label run by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt (Torn Hawk), Apresents VV-013 Russo's ""Wild Metals"". A
Russo (Ari Russo) is an NYC based multi-artist whose engagement with abandoned media finds an outlet in the video bursts he culls as OfficeFern. As a programmer, he's produced innovative music generation tools such as the Diamond Arpeggiator. He returns to his own music with this collection of challenging and transporting structures.A
Wyatt and VV are eager to endorse Russo's latest report on crossmodal perception, a true exercise in synesthesia.A
""Wild Metals"" sounds like ferns and orchids infiltrating a tableaux of black plastic electronics, the breed of black plastic that Russo and Wyatt both found sinisterly inserted into the grid of their childhood. It provided the skin for some of their favorite toys, and its general resonance was aligned with the fast cars, women, and architecture that dominated their imaginations.

Review: In the new year things are only getting freakier for the Gravity Graffiti camp as label core member Riccardo Schiro takes the reins once again. "Sine Phase," as the title might well imply, is a focused trip into rhythmic synth modulation with a techno pulse and drippy effects processing guaranteed to soak into your cerebellum. "Islands" charges further into experimental terrain, ditching any semblance of a beat in favour of free-wheeling texture and tone that sounds as though it was wrenched from a particularly fruitful experimental session. As the plot thickens for this ever-intriguing label, our advice is to strap in for the long haul experience.

Los Imaginones (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERS 017. Rel: 22 Jun 15
  1. Afrobotics (Suzanne Kraft remix) (6:28)
  2. Shockers (The Samps remix) (5:28)
  3. Underdogs (Tom Noble remix) (6:44)
  4. Roll (Aritocrat P Child re-edit) (6:56)
Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.

Arson (12")
Cat: CHAM 008. Rel: 07 Apr 15
  1. Blaze (2:20)
  2. Set Fire To The Living (2:35)
  3. Our Love (5:18)
  4. King (3:05)
  5. Frig (1:21)
  6. Wind/Water (4:02)
Review: Fiery dynamics abound as Detroit's Snakepiss delivers a caustic six track document. Ranging from the paranoid and intense overlapping vocal samples of the angst-ridden "Blaze" to the slow-and-steady tribal thunder of "Our Love", each cut reveals a different shade of Snakepiss's sonic personality. There's anger here, but it's displayed conservatively and creatively; "Set Fire To The Living", for example, is an icy slice of electro that develops into such a rich groove you can't avoid the heat. The vocal texture on "Frig", meanwhile, sounds as if the devil has been sampled himself... And wrapped around a meditative cosmic sermon that would sit well in any daring disco set. Strike a light.

Glass Body (12")
Cat: HTH 022. Rel: 17 Jul 14
  1. Glass Body
  2. Halo Heart
  3. All Our Beasts
  4. Black Birds
  5. Drops Of Armour
  6. Halo Heart (Asher Levitas remix)
Review: With a name that nods to My Bloody Valentine it's not surprising to hear a whisper of shoegaze sneaking into this debut single from Soft As Snow. As the latest signing to Houndstooth this release sits comfortably next to the gothic tinges of Snow Ghost, with vocalist Oda Egjar Starheim calling to mind Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray fame. There's a canny mixture of noirish pop and expansive electronica, with the duo unafraid to embrace snappy time signature changes and bombastic choruses in amidst the more subtle elements of their sound. With five distinctive songs to announce themselves in addition to a remix from Old Apparatus alumni Asher Levitas, Glass Body is a powerful debut for an act set to tear up festival circuits in the near future.

Hypnagogo (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ARV 002. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Error Hash Mirror Mountain
  2. Sea Dweller
  3. Hypnagogo
  4. Fast Rubber Taxis
Review: Following the excellent OHM compilation, Glasgow's Ambidextrous label continues its forays into vinyl editions with this sterling EP from label regular Solipsism, aka Craig Murphy. With an energised, dynamic sound that positively bursts out of the speakers, Murphy is flying the flag for leftfield electronica coming out of Scotland. "Error Hash Mirror Mountain" has the kind of overloaded yet melodic sound that you might expect from early Nathan Fake, although the wooziness is replaced by a rabid punch that shakes your cerebellum. "Sea Dweller" by way of stark contrast dives into a low-slung trip hop vibe, and the smoked out mood continues with "Hypnagogo" on the flip. "Fast Rubber Taxis" is equally slow, but it sports a sassy rhythmic strut that sets it apart from the other two downtempo tracks.
