Review: 2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals. Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I'm A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener 'They Game' is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s 'baggy' sound. The energy mounts further with "Shelera", a guitar-driven acidic banger, and "Sticks and Stones", a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is "Break the Limit", an EBM-laced number that wouldn't sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with "Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)" touching on darkwave territory. "Udibaby" and "Arpman" close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia. Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album's artwork starkly depicts the project's name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It's rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.

Review: **REPRESS** Another album from the amazing mind of Heinrich Mueller (aka Gerald Donald). Originally released on DJ Hell's Gigolo label and apparently only licensed after Gerald crashed Hell's BMW and had to come up with a means of paying him back. All the tracks first appeared on the very obscure Dataphysix imprint from Detroit, with some releases only reaching the 500 copy mark. Now brought back to life for 2007, "Gesamtkunstwerk" could be one of the best electro albums ever made. Yes that's right, I said it...the best ever! This is almost as important for the techno generation as Kraftwerk's "Computerworld" and "Autobahn" were for many in the 80s. The tracks are all pretty simple, made up of only two or three analogue instruments each, but they seem to hold these timeless melodies that you can never tire of. Other moments are eerie, menacing and downright strange, but still pure genius. You know how a lot of the time when you buy a new record it becomes your favourite for a while, and then it starts to lose a little life? (Of course it's still good, but just not as fresh as the first couple of weeks when you listened to it on repeat). Well guess what? That doesn't happen with this record. I must have listened to some of the tracks on here over a 1000 times and they still send shivers down my spine. It's one of those special albums that just don't seem to age.

Review: Solar One Music's cofounder Robert Witschakowski and Dopplereffek's Gerald Donald return with another sauced out electro offering that takes you to another dimension. Their trademark sounds jump out of the speakers across four glorious sides of vinyl. The slipper baselines, the sci-fi motifs, the feeling of high speed space travel all define these cuts as you guide n bumpy beats or get lost in glistening synths. The duo first worked together a number of year ago but are still finding fresh new forms that make them as essential as ever.

Review: Analogical Force mark their 30th release with a bumper collection of electro remixes from some heavyweight names and like-minded friends. Across all 12 tracks, and six sides of vinyl., the label broadens its remit with various new electro perspectives making this their most vital offering to date. There is restless brilliance from Samuel Kerridge, brutal sound waves from Humanoid and superbly slick, funk and deep tackle from the one and only Radioactive Man. The ever excellent Plaid also serve up a raw highlight with their broken beat workout.

Review: While the cover may lead you into thinking this is another crucial cult drop from the forgotten '80s on Dark Entries, Sepehr Alimagham is in fact a contemporary cat operating out of San Francisco with a steadily swelling catalogue to his name. This album follows up a sizable EP for Berlin label Spe:c last year, and draws you in fast and effectively with its seductive brand of nightwalker electro. From the slithering drum machine beats to the artful reverb deployment, there's a tangible atmosphere Sepehr seems keen to draw you into - one where the streets are lit by flickering neon lights and disembodied voices echo down haunted alleyways. It's sinister, but not excessively gloomy - the kind of creepy electro that Dark Entries was built for.

Review: One of the pleasing by-products of the recent electro revival has been the return of Aux 88, a legendary Detroit quartet whose armour plated, bass heavy take on the style made them one of Michigan's finest musical exports in the 1990s. "Counterparts", their first new album in ten years, is therefore big news. After opening with their warm, funk-fuelled take on Motor City techno - the sci-fi brilliance of "Intel" - the four-piece rushes through a range of killer, club-friendly electro jams in their trademark style (tough drums, funky bass, vocoder vocals). Highlights include the moody "My Electro Visions", the foreboding "Stereolized", the ghetto-tech influenced "Pothole Paradise" and the far-sighted, Cybotron-meets-Kraftwerk style goodness of "Electro In Key of Funk".

Review: Since parting company with DFA a decade ago, Gavin Russom's releases as Black Meteoric Star have become increasingly few and far between. "Disco", his third and arguably most expansive album to date under the alias, is therefore a more than welcome arrival. It's an impressive set, too, with Russom offering up a deliciously distorted, fuzzy and forthright mix of hazy, sound collage style interludes, throbbing new wave, tactile deep electro, razor sharp analogue jack-tracks, decidedly alien-sounding instrumentals, redlined EBM throb-jobs and clanking, lo-fi electro. It all sounds like it was recorded in a cement mixer using a particularly dusty collection of old synthesizers and drum machines, but that's no bad thing; in fact, it plays a big part in the album's undoubted lo-fi charm.

  14. Rodney Stepp - "Break-Out" (5:48)
Review: While much turn-of-the-80s electro-funk was inherently futuristic in tone, the music gathered together on Soul Jazz's latest compilation, "Space Funk", is particularly intergalactic. The venerable London label has searched in particular for cuts from obscure independent labels that bear all the hallmarks of "Afro-futurism" - a musical and cultural movement that would later inspire the birth of techno in Detroit. The quality of the material remains dizzyingly high throughout, with our picks including the bleeping, slap-bass-propelled brilliance of Frank Cornilius' "Computer Games", Egyptian Lover/Jamie Jupitor's signature electro style on "Computer Power", the starry jazz-funk of Ernest Flippin II's "Supersonic Space Lady" and the guitar-laden P-funk strut of Below Zero Band's "Seven (We Are)".

  8. Raw Deal Cocaine Kills (Prelude) (2:21)
Review: Kalita's obligatory Record Store Day offering is something rather special: synth-funk visionary couple Emerson and Leora Sandidge's mythical unreleased album finally sees the light of day, following Emerson's sole private press seven-inch single release way back in 1988. Those two tunes ("Sending All My Love Out" and "Why Are You So Cold?") make the cut on this belated debut set, alongside six other previously unreleased recordings from the same sessions. Their take on electrofunk, boogie and '80s soul is colourful, soulful and synth-heavy, with the included tracks veering from up-tempo club workouts (see "Raw Deal Cocaine Kills") and fizzing dancefloor pop workouts, to sugary ballads and seductive slow jams. In other words, it's a more than tidy selection of rare and unheard gems.

Review: There's no shortage of great electro around at the moment, but lest we forget Carl Finlow has been dishing out some of the finest for decades now. In many ways 20/20 Vision is his spiritual home too, so it's great to see him imparting his skills for a fresh long player of razor sharp body poppers loaded with robo-funk. From charging opener "Apparatus" to freaky wriggler "Carbon Deposits", restrained creeper "Components" to punchy melodic workout "Ampere", there's a lot to enjoy and so much musical detail to absorb across this record. As if we'd expect any less from Mr. Finlow.

Review: There are many things about this debut album from exiled Sheffielder 96 Back that are, frankly, remarkable. For starters, it's utterly brilliant and sounds like the work of an artist with years in the game under his belt, rather than a 19-year-old who is still making his way in the scene. As you'd expect, it's rooted in electro, with the Bristol-based youngster flitting between dashing alien funk ("Matryoshka"), freestyle-influenced cheeriness ("Excited, Boy"), weighty, Drexciya style rollers ("Ghzel Tea"), sub-heavy sleaze ("Digi Trigger"), early Aphex Twin-meets-DMX Krew melodiousness ("Vennsate") and rush-inducing workouts that are giddier than your average toddler after a few too many shots of neat orange squash.

Just listen to the likes of "Cosmic Raindance" and you'll hear the future echoes of the Belleville Three and the scores of music that came after. This is an essential milestone for any avid electronic music fan to keep a hold of.

Review: Over the years, Joey Negro has delivered compilations focusing on a wide range of styles and sub-genres, including soulful disco, Italo-house, early U.S disco-rap, and Washington D.C go-go. Now he's turned his attention to electro, the style that did more than any other to inspire Britain's first wave of DJs and dance music producers. This "personal collection" contains a mixture of stone-cold scene classics - Aleem's Leroy Burgess-fronted "Release Yourself", Hashim's scene anthem "Al Naayafiysh (The Soul)" and Dwayne Omar's P-funk influenced "This Party's Jam Packed" - alongside deeper selections such as Kosmic Light Force's brilliant - and hard to find - L.A electrofunk classic "Mysterious Waves", and The Russell Brothers thrillingly intergalactic "The Party Scene".

Review: Ryan Hunn AKA Illum Sphere has impressively grown and matured as a producer since making his debut on Fat City back in 2009. His 2014 debut album, Ghosts of Then & Now, was something of a watershed moment, tempering his experimental, bass-heavy dancefloor compositions with a newfound love of cinematic sounds. Glass arguably moves further in the latter direction. While there are some nods towards his club-ready past - see the 4/4 shuffle of "Fall Into Water", or the moody electro bounce of "Fuel The Fire" - it's not the beats that dominate, but rather his evocative chord progressions and IDM style melodies. In fact, it's the more sanguine, ambient inspired cuts, of which there are numerous, that really stand out.

Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it in any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the "Digeridoo" era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.

Review: Recently Interstellar Funk (real name Olf van Elden) has used his Artificial Dance label to offer up a range of new and old tracks that doffs a cap to "wave" music - that hard-to-define, synthesiser-heavy style that first emerged at the turn-of-the-80s and has been evolving ever since. "Artificial Dancers", his first compilation, continues this trend by gathering together personal favourites and rarities that spans 40 years of wave music. It's a brilliant collection all told, with highlights including the moody dancefloor brilliance of Clan Of Xymox's "Stranger (Demo)", the Human League's exceedingly rare 1979 tribute to JG Ballard ("4JG"), a killer live recording of "Dias Cortas" by EBM kings Liaisons Dangereuse and the Norwegian eccentricity of Det Gylne Triangel's wayward post-punk synth-pop classic "Maskindans".

Review: 2017 has been a good year for fans of The Hacker AKA long-serving producer Michel Amato. Having already impressed via rock solid EPs on Stilleben and Bordello a Parigi, Amato delivers his first full-length excursion since 2014. As you'd probably expect, Les Theatre Des Operations tends towards the alien and intergalactic, with Amato serving up a range of tracks rich in bleeping electronic melodies, unfussy drum machine rhythms and angular, TB-303 style basslines. As usual, the eight tracks neatly blur the boundaries between techno and electro - both rhythmically and sonically - while regular collaborator Miss Kittin lends a hand on moody and mind-altering LP highlight "Time X", adding some typically sleazy and stylish spoken word vocals.

Review: The vital Dark Entries label welcome Lisbon producer Photonz for his debut album here. The esteemed artist has been making moves for a decade now but none so big as this comprehensive and subversive long player. "Nuit" is an album of cold wave synths and shimmering industrialism, of skittish beat patterns and cosmic melodies like "Shifting Symbols" and the more jacking drum patterns and celestial keys of "Shakti", as well as tender piano pieces and tripped out electronics such as "Lusting". It's a widescreen affair that takes in a whole range of moods and grooves with equal elan.

Review: We are proud to release 'Fortunate Isolation' the sophomore album from Borusiade. Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, Borusiade aka Miruna Boruzescu started DJ-ing in 2002 as one of the very few female DJs in the city's emerging alternative clubbing scene. Influenced by a classical musical education, a bachelor in film direction and fascinated by raw electronic sounds, Borusiade first combined these universes in the construction of her DJ sets and starting 2005 also in her music production. A sound of her own has slowly crystallized, often dark with poignant bass lines, obsessive themes and by all means melodic. She has released EPs on labels like Pinkman, Unterton, Cititrax, Correspondant and Comeme, who released her debut album 'A Body' in 2018. 'Fortunate Isolation' is perhaps Borusiade's most personal release to date.

Review: We are honored to announce the debut album from Vin Sol, who's taken club-goers on a trip with his tracks and sets for the past two decades. Vin Sol is a third-generation San Franciscan of Salvadorean descent who has released on Unknown to the Unknown, Clone, Delft, Honey Soundsystem, and Ultramajic. His DJ sets expertly span the genres of house, electro, techno, italo, disco, soul, funk, and whatever other finds he digs up. He's also a musical partner of Matrixxman, AKA Charlie Duff, with whom he started the Soo Wavey label. His current focus is on the wild monthly party and label Club Lonely, which he runs with Primo Pitino and Jeremy Castillo. 'Planet Trash' consists of 10 tracks spread across 2 slabs of vinyl and a bonus flexi disc. Vin started working on the album in the winter of 2017 while taking a break from making club tracks. Simultaneously he also wanted to disconnect from the grip of the internet and 24 hour news cycle. Spending more time outside, he became entranced by the Bay Area fog. Sutro Tower wholly enveloped in mist is a view that inspired the ambient tracks on the album. You will also hear hints of the Latin freestyle and classic acid that informed Vin's youth. By spring of 2018 Vin headed to Berlin to finish the album and work on a collaboration with Matrixxman, an homage to SF musical institution Bottom of the Hill that kicks off side C. Vin's musical approach is honest, using the tools of the trade to both innovate upon and pay respect to classic forms. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each copy is housed in a jacket using photos by Vin Sol, and designed by Kevin McCaughey of Boot Boyz Biz. It includes a 4-color giant newsprint fold-out poster and golden flexi disc.

Review: While many have previously charted the vibrant Nigerian music scene of the late '60s and 1970s, few have focused on the country's earlier "first wave" of indigenous pop. Nigeria Freedom Sounds aims to do just that, celebrating a four-year period between 1960 and '63 when the country's music-makers, enthused by independence from Britain, began fusing the traditional Nigerian sounds of juju and apala with Ghanaian highlife, Caribbean calypso and mambo. As you might expect, this musical melting pot resulted in some terrifically vibrant and celebratory music, most of which was released on 7" singles. As usual with Soul Jazz, the 23-track CD of thrilling obscurities comes backed with detailed liner notes, telling the true story of Nigeria's first popular music explosion.

Soundtracking the gritty downtown NYC streets he made his first mark on, this limited collection captures the whole melting pot from b-boy culture with cuts such as "E.T Boogie" and "Bump N Grind", raw boogie and soul ("Over & Over") and pure drama ("The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us"). A powerful collection as striking and relatable as his own signature.

Review: Last year, Extrawelt delivered their first album for five years, the wonderfully expansive and on-point Fear of an Extra Planet. Less than 12 months on, they're back with another suitably epic full-length outing, "Unknown". Across three DJ-friendly slabs of wax, the German duo eschews the willful electronic eclecticism that's marked out their recent career in favour of 12 tracks that mine the world of electro for inspiration. While there are subtle nuances and incremental shifts throughout - a little more acid here, a nod to early '90s IDM there, and regular tempo changes throughout - the majority of the album is as spacey, weighty and punchy as you'd expect. It's almost as if Extrawelt has spent the last year exclusively listening to Drexciya records. Superb stuff all told.

Review: With the exception of Skee Mask and the Zenker brothers, no producer has released more EPs on Ilian Tape than Stenny. For that reason, it would be fair to say that "Upsurge", his first foray into the full-length format, is long overdue. In keeping with the creative opportunities provided by the longer format, the 12-track set is framed as a "journey through the ups and downs", with hazy strolls through ambient, IDM and dub techno sitting side by side with skittish, off-kilter and occasionally dark forays into more club-focused electro, post-jungle and broken techno territory. There are plenty of subtle variations to be found within both broad categories, with Stenny managing to provide a unified front thanks to the pleasingly atmospheric and mood-matching nature of the collected cuts.
