  3. The Sleep Room (5:40)
  4. Weep For Joy (4:56)
Review: Central Processing Unit chief CP Smith is keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the shadowy producer(s) behind the Secret State project. Smith describes this debut EP as "an attempt to rise above the all-pervasive, vacuous, decaying culture." We'll let you judge whether the men or women of mystery have succeeded in that aim, but we certainly think it's a fine EP. By CPU standards, it's a rather eclectic affair, flitting between druggy, arpeggio-driven alien funk ("CIA UFO Google Search"), ghetto-tech influenced deep electro (the wonderful "De-Pattern"), sparkling dacenfloor electro positivity ("The Sleep Room") and glistening, bass-heavy techno/proto-house/deep house fusion (sublime closer "Weep For Joy").

Review: It would be fair to say that White Material co-founder DJ Richard's latest full-length excursion is an album of two halves (to mangle a football cliche). Stick on the first slab of wax, and you'll be confronted with a string of dark and moody treats, from creepy ambient interludes to grumpy electro, to mind-altering dark-Italo (see standout "Vanguard") and pulsating, off-kilter electronica (the restless acid pulse, off-kilter drums and paranoid chords of "Tunnel Stalker"). Whack on the second disc, though, and you'll be comforted and calmed by a series of intensely blissful, occasional melancholic compositions that are much lighter and dreamier in tone. Of these, it's the sublime "Final Mercy" and "Ex Aere" that stand out.

Review: In our eyes, at least, Central Processing Unit was the most consistent label of 2016. The Sheffield imprint has started 2017 in fine fashion, too, with this debut album from Ukranian producer Andriy Vezdeno AKA Noumen. Aperion is a fine set of off-kilter electronic treats, drawing on a wide range of classic and contemporary influences. There are mutant, Autechre-like moments, uncompromising electro workouts a la Drexciya, nods to braindance-era Rephlex releases, melodious explorations of Boards of Canada territory, and thrillingly mangled interpretations of drum & bass. In other words, it's a hugely enjoyable, turbo-charged sprint through Vezdenko's contemporary interpretations of classic IDM tropes.

Review: French electro expert Maelstrom returns to Central Processing System for the second time in 2018, following up his tremendous Alph4 EP earlier in the year. The Bromance and Zone staple takes time out from his RAAR imprint to deliver these menacing bass explorations heard on the terrific Fragment EP. From the frantic electro bounce of "The Scope" or the slow motion acid trip "USSIDD" to the slamming futurist beats of "Utility Shift", Joan-Mael Peneau remains a force to reckoned with.

Review: Sean Dorris' S>>D project was always bound to end up on Central Processing Unit; after all, they do tend to recruit the very best of the electro game, and the producer's previous release for the likes of Icasea have established him as someone to push the genre forwards into next century. Co Intel Pro is a curious blend of different influences and ideas, all liquefied down to a shape-shifting electro structure that even Stingray would find hard to blend up for the dancefloor sets. These fifteen tracks, in truth, are a much deeper array of sounds, and it is ambient and drone sounds which make up the best part of it. If you're looking for that soundtrack aesthetic, but want a little but of movement in those pads, you'd be picking up the right release. Most importantly, you'll be copping an album with a clear vision, and a well-constructed story at its core. Industrial goodness, right here.

Review: Detroit techno hero DJ Bone is ever prolific these days, with his Differ-Ent alias releasing an epic triple LP release on Don't Be Afraid last year. A Piece Of Beyond marks the second DJ Bone studio album, and it finds him in an exploratory mood. "It Begins" is a unique exercise in synth wobbles and military drum programming, while "The Stalker" heads into the deepest and farthest corners of the quintessential Motor City techno sound. "The Chase" takes on a cosmic, break-infected stance that calls to mind spiritual jazz as much as techno, while there's more classic styles to be enjoyed on "Dreamers 9" and the absolutely stomping "Sweat".

  4. From Here (Chasm mix) (7:46)
Review: Some 13 years after founding the fabulous Minimal Wave label, Veronica Vasicka has finally got round to releasing some music of her own. The fact that it's appearing on Regis and Female's long-serving Downwards imprint is a good indication of what's on offer: dark, stylish and mind-altering machine music full of raw, analogue electronics. Vasicka's original version of "From Here" draws great influence from vintage minimal wave, though its' heavy bass, industrial-strength IDM drums and rugged electronic pulses are bang up to date. Regis heads up the remix package, delivering a pulsating version that sits somewhere between new wave, electro and dark Italo-disco. Elsewhere, Paul Kendal's mix brilliantly blends dark ambient and fuzz-laden guitars, while the Chasm Mix is a bustling, delay-laden trip into intergalactic new wave territory.

From the brooding underwater electro-funk of killer opener "50 Yen", the rolling junglist stepper "Rainfall" to the depth charged yet emotive soul of "Tulip", Vort is keeping a low profile at present but we are pretty sure you'll be hearing more from this promising producer in this year.

Review: Having built its name on various artist releases featuring old and new artists, Contort Yourself is branching out with a new series that focuses on one contemporary act per release. In this instance it's Coletivo Vandalismo getting some much-deserved attention. The Portuguese industrial punk outfit have a visceral sound that favours noise and distortion, but most importantly they know how to wield these sonic tools for maximum impact. The snarl of the synths and the crunch of the drums on "Hostages Of Society" could easily be too much in the wrong hands, but here the errant tones find their own space in the mix, making the impact of the track all the more on-point.

Apocalyptica EP
Cat: SAT 40. Rel: 24 Jul 07
  1. Scorched Earth
  2. Ascension
  3. Landscapes
Review: Satamile turns 40, and does it in style with the stunning "Apocalyptica EP" from Sir Real. There are three top-notch tracks that combine the electro breakbeat of the early years with the sonic qualities of Kraftwerk, all soaked in nitro for one huge club-fuelled electro record. "Scorched Earth" is a full rev club cut with deep melodic arrangements, staccato bass accents and a driving breakbeat, along with very uplifting sound-design which characterizes this growler of a track. Not for the faint-hearted, but at the same time not dark. It's an emotive cut for the big room boom. "Ascension" picks up where the a-side left off. It is a subtle and funky acid breakbeat cut with nu-wave style chord progressions to lift the track skywards. "Landscapes" finishes off the EP, and the best may well have been saved for last. It has a snapping bass-snare break with great sound design, heavily treated ghostly vocal snippets, and mysterious and unique backing melodies providing rare and stunning new sonic landscapes. This one might be the 4am sci-fi voyeur track - deep and mysterious yet with lots of drive and energy for the dancefloor.

Review: Having been dormant for over three years, New York label Satamile returns to continue spreading the gospel of proper electro music with a six-track EP from The Ghost That Walks. Drexciya enthusiasts will be all over this record; the rubbery melody of "The Angriest Angel" recalls the Detroit duo at their most playful but with a simmering undercurrent of tension that is very much the producer's own signature style. Similarly great are the searing analogue synth buzz of "Seven Deadly Sons", the tribal 303 stomp of "Urban Jungle" and the 808 rattle and Belgian rave tones of "Resident Evil". Those who were lost without the label's presence should rest easy - Angry Angels is easily among their extensive catalogue's best releases.

Review: Incoming - straightfire electro bass shenanigans from the ever reliable E-Beamz camp once again, courtesy of Cestrian - the alias of London based veteran Ali Renault. The dark dystopian bounce of "Lard" impresses in its own right, paving the way for a top rework by the legendary Luke Eargoggle (with Obergman) to round up the A side. On the flip, "Underbite" channels the best aesthetics of Motor City style sonic aesthetics, but men of the moment Jensen Interceptor & Assembler Code steal the spotlight with their powerful rendition.

Review: The final and most in-depth part of Mannequin's unofficial 'Turin Trilogy' sees the Berlin-based label shine a further light on Musumeci, described as one of the "most rare and unknown Italian Minimal Synth bands from the '80s". Formed in 1985 by ex Rude Pravo member and Mauro M. and Franco G, former noise maker of Errata-S-Corrige, Musumeci was rounded out by the addition of Laura G. (ex-keyboardist of Rude Pravo) and vocalist Paul C. Together the band recorded and self-released two demo tapes that align them in the canon of angry primitive electronics alongside DAF and Severed Heads. Having initially featured on the second Danza Meccanica compilation from Mannequin, the Schwarz Morgen / Zusammen LP offers a more conclusive portrayal of the band featuring some thirteen tracks culled from those two rare tapes.

Oba Enka
Oba Enka (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MNQ 124. Rel: 06 Sep 18
  1. DEF (7:39)
  2. Ham (9:07)
  3. Oba Enka (7:20)
Review: Given he's previously released some seriously creepy, atmospheric techno on Berceuse Heroique and Pinkman, you'd expect Black Merlin's Mannequin Records debut to be similarly unsettling. That's certainly the case with A-side "DEF", a hypnotic and feverish affair where raw and restless, industrial-inspired riffs rise above paranoid, held-note chords and a locked-in drum track. You'll find more brain-melting, razor-sharp modular motifs on the arguably even more intense and wayward "Oba Enka", while closer "Ham" wraps undulating, acid-style electronic motifs around an altogether fuzzier, looser groove. It sounds like it would be capable of inducing vivid hallucinations in early morning dancers, which in our book is no bad thing.

Expansion Naranja
Cat: MNQ 064. Rel: 17 Jun 15
  1. Expansion Naranja (7:01)
  2. Ecuacion De Las Estrellas (5:28)
Review: The legendary Coil becomes the latest group to benefit from the archival touch of Alessandro Adriani's Mannequin label, who present Expansion Naranja, a two track hook up with leftfield Mexican duo Ford Proco on vinyl for the very first time. The story goes Ford Proco met Coil's Peter Christopherson while seeing The Orb play in Los Angeles during the '90s where they exchanged contact details, and months later Christopherson was phoned up to see if he wanted to be an extra in an Ice-T video. Both "Ecuacion De Las Estrellas" and "Expansion Naranja" from this record were record in 1999 and until now have never seen a vinyl release, and across both productions you'll hear Peter Christopherson saxophone, drum and effects work, while the spoken vocals and singing yelps of the late John Balance appear throughout.
