Review: It would be fair to say that Tom Ruijg AKA Tracey is an artist on the up. Since making his debut on pal Tom Trago's Voyage Direct label back in 2017 he's developed his sound further via quietly impressive releases on Aus Music and Midland's Intergraded imprint. Now operating on Dial, "Biostar" sees the Dutch producer deliver a debut album of hissing, analogue rich lo-fi treats that draw influence from deep electro, Boards Of Canada style IDM, Rephlex-esque "braindance", distorted industrial music, spacey ambient, acid and rhythmically punchy '80s electro. There's so much going on that it will take a few listens to really sink in, but it's more than worth the effort; as debut albums go, "Biostar" is up there with the best of them.

Review: Earlier in the year, Ali Renault rebooted his Cestrian alias after a five-year hiatus via a suitably throbbing EP on E-Beamz. Here he goes one step further, pitching up on Mechatronica with a six-track mini-album of atmospheric, otherworldly treats. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the sludgy, hypnotic electro drums, foreboding chords and glacial electronic melodies of opener "Gradients", to the Drexciya style peak-time punch of "The Weir", via the wild acid bass, distorted beat-box drums and mind-altering computer electronics of "Cat Strain". Also worth checking is the druggy, industrial-tinged, pitched-down weirdness of "Everything" and the cheeky, Kraftwerk-sampling bustle of "Speak and Spell".

Review: It would be fair to say that White Material co-founder DJ Richard's latest full-length excursion is an album of two halves (to mangle a football cliche). Stick on the first slab of wax, and you'll be confronted with a string of dark and moody treats, from creepy ambient interludes to grumpy electro, to mind-altering dark-Italo (see standout "Vanguard") and pulsating, off-kilter electronica (the restless acid pulse, off-kilter drums and paranoid chords of "Tunnel Stalker"). Whack on the second disc, though, and you'll be comforted and calmed by a series of intensely blissful, occasional melancholic compositions that are much lighter and dreamier in tone. Of these, it's the sublime "Final Mercy" and "Ex Aere" that stand out.

Review: Five years on from the release of his fine debut album, M.S.P, analogue fetishist Roel Djicks AKA Ekman has finally got round to producing a follow-up. Packed full of subtle nods towards vintage electronic styles and artists - think IDM, Drexciya style electro, acid house, basement-bothering techno, Autechre and panicked EBM - the album sees Djicks flit between melodious, well thought-out home listening cuts and blistering, tops-off peak-time club anthems. In the latter category you'll find the foreboding techno psychedelia of "Eulers Lucky Number", the wild and wayward acid hustle of "Mills Constant" and the guttural broken techno bounce of growling opener "Holomorpic Functions".

  2. HRL6 (6:54)
  3. Drive Shift (7:02)
  4. Drive Shift (The Hacker remix) (6:23)
Review: More from regular studio partners Assembler Code and Jenson Interceptor, whose previous joint EPs for Boyznoize, Private Persons and Cultivated Electronics were little less than essential. First, turn your attention to superb opener "Random Pain", a melodious and evocative deep electro cut that morphs into something dirtier, darker and far more hard-hitting midway through. "HRL6" is altogether moodier and more Drexciyan in tone, while flipside opener "Drive Shift" fixes elastic electronics and gently pulsing motifs to an altogether more relaxed and rolling 4/4 electro groove. It comes accompanied by an altogether darker and moodier remix by The Hacker that boasts raw electronics, spacey bleeps and a slightly paranoid vibe.

Review: Assembler Code & Jensen Interceptor are one of electro's most devastating duos right now. Mechatronica welcome them for four more hard hitting jams after their "Vapour Waves" EP on this label got plenty of people talking. These are tunes with an old school feel that will blow up your bass bins and tear apart your tweeters with their mix of low end heaviness and bright melodic patterns. Superbly urgent drum programming sweeps you off your feet and races you through astral skies on "Noise Theory", "Otherwise" has a raggedy-ass broken beat and "Day 1" has a blistering bassline of the highest order.

  3. Naoned (feat DeFeKT) (4:29)

Review: Strap in and prepare for a wild ride on this one as Maelstrom links with DeFeKT to serve up some searing electro/techno fusions that are designed to shake your bones loose. "Heat Wave" is a real slap around the face with its corrugated bassline and coruscated percussion. It's a high impact, high speed track while "Three Channels" is all twitching synth paranoia for peak time freak outs. Flipside "Naoned" piles on the pressured with warped bass and busted hits soaked in industrial textures before the most brash and confrontational cut of the lot - "Dublin" - closes things out in real face-melting fashion.

Review: Texas-based electro stalwart Cygnus first appeared on Craigie Knowes back in 2018 via a contribution to the Scottish label's third annual "War Child Fundraiser" release. Here he returns to the imprint for a label debut proper that also marks the prolific producer's first outing of 2020. There's much to enjoy amongst the five tracks, from the rumbling bass, 1990 style bleeps and gentle electro beats of "Ebony Starlight", to the sludgy experimental analogue wonkiness of "Metroid C64" and the bustling sci-fi funk of "Votoms". Arguably best of all though is "Connection Error", a delightfully positive, melodious and emotive club electro jam that's guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Review: Coldwave excursionist Shari Vari aka Void Vision finally comes through with her highly awaited Sub Rosa LP on the gorgeously on-point Mannequin imprint. The taster EP "Sour" out earlier this year was a taster of what's to come from Vari in terms of diversity and quality. Sub Rosa contains a little of everything when it comes to the electronic dance edge, where "Everythin Is Fine", for example, takes a techno beat and slaps down some vocals all over its makeup, while "Hidden Hand" is a true Drexciyan electro number. Then there's more abstract moments such as "Slow Down", "Vulgar Displays" with its rolling stabs of percussion and "Queen Of Hearts" with that humungous swell of low-end and quirky, heady melodies. Yum.

  4. Decanaus (4:46)
Review: Late Night Approach are no strangers to Klakson, having made their debut on Steffi's long-running electro imprint three years ago. Here they return with their first outing of 2020 - a sweaty and forthright affair that maintains a strong dancefloor focus throughout. The A-side is all about "Overbridge", an unflinchingly weighty and mind-mangling affair in the style of fellow Klakson artist Dexter that's given a buzzing, all-action, alien techno-funk makeover by Fastograph. Over on side B, the Italian twosome goes a little deeper on the bubbly, spacey and energetic "The Naus Investigation", before reaching for psychedelic acid lines, ghostly Drexciya style chords and bustling beats on paranoid closing cut "Decanaus".

Review: Electro is very much back in vogue, but for Steffi's vital Klakson label it's a sound that never went away. This EP is a particularly special one that welcomes Fastgraph, aka Dutchman Frank de Groodt, back into the fold more than a decade since his last official release (which also came on this label). These tracks are fast, funky machine music with crispy, crashing metal hits and warped synths that are made to devastate the dance floor. The frazzled bass of "Number 8" sure is pleasing, but to really make a mark, drop the manic lines and overdriven drums of "Interface" and see people really lose their minds.

Review: John Heckle last released an album on Tabernacle three years ago, but he's been far from quiet since then with his Head Front Panel project diverting his attention towards blistering hard techno. Tone To Voice then represents a return to more melodic pastures with a more diverse selection of tempos and moods to choose from, but still Heckle's innate gift for expressive, dynamic machine music shines through. "Sonic Spectrometer" is a joyous slice of techno-jazz, while "Potential Life" whips up stunning cascading synth lines and pattering hats. At times, there's no need for a kick, and with ample ambient excursions woven into the mix this stands as one of Heckle's most accomplished releases yet.

Review: "We are excited to finally announce and share 'Presentiment', the second Long Player from The Connection Machine. This release is particularly special for us as it will be the first time in over 20 years that Jeroen and Natasja have put an album out on vinyl. Despite having a string of aliased releases in the '90s on the mighty U-Trax, a 12" during the early days of Carl Craig's Planet E, a remarkable album 'Painless' on Down Low Music, and most recently a series of in demand E.P.s with Lost Trax on Tabernacle, their output has remained tantalisingly infrequent. With 12 tracks that capture their unique and awe-inspiring sound, 'Presentiment' opens you up to a world that only The Connection Machine have access to."

  1. Die Nibelungen

  3. Virtuosic Mechanic
  4. Kammermusik
Review: German producer Martin Matiske has been sporadic in his appearances dating back to 2002, but when he releases a record he makes it count. Following previous turns on International Deejay Gigolo and Stilleben, he now brings his fulsome electro sound to Vivod sounding fresher than ever. "Die Nibelungen" draws on a fine tradition of German electronica while using that mechanical melancholy you might find in a Bochum Welt track. "Bayerischer Wald" is a cheery synth-pop celebration, and "Virtuosic Mechanic" is a more snappy club track with plenty of Bunker-friendly darkness packed into its bones. "Kammermusik" cools things down with a lovely meander through plaintive bleep lines and plastic synth leads.

Edge Of Darkness (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVOD 022. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Female Predator
  2. Fear Eats The Soul
  3. Edge Of Darkness
  4. Basic Structure
Review: Emergent duo Broken Arrows were previously spotted lurking around Giallo Disco back in 2015, so you should have some idea of the kind of lurid late night machine sleaze they like to get their hands dirty with. They've now slid over to the sympathetic but marginally more techno-minded Vivod imprint with a new clutch of deviant heaters for those adventurous dancefloor spaces where B-movie sounds reign supreme. "Female Predator" is a tough EBM-tinted workout with plenty of jack in its stack, while "Fear Eats The Soul" takes a more synth-wave approach with some speech samples thrown in for good measure. "Edge Of Darkness" is a more tense affair that pings arpeggios around a minor key refrain, and then "Basic Structure" whips out the hardest track on the record, a lithe industrial stomper laden with rhythmic noise and a mean synth bassline that will hit your solar plexus like a battering ram.

  6. Bytes 4 (Warning 2) (0:31)
Review: Detroit duo Aux88 always danced to a different drum than their Motor City peers, developing a ludicrously weighty trademark sound that put massive, mind-mangling analogue bass and gut-punching electro beats at the heart of the action. "Direct Drive", a 1995 release that has long been hard to find (hence this much-needed reissue), is one of the best examples of their distinctive sound. The title track (side A on this edition) is little more than a raw, thrusting bassline, snappy machine beats, spacey pads and occasional Kraftwerk samples, but it's brilliantly floor-friendly and brilliantly executed - Detroit body music for those who like their club cuts sub-heavy. Elsewhere, "Aux Express (DJ K1 Mix)" is a bouncy electro jam and the short "Bytes" tracks are wonky vocal samples for creative DJs.

  12. IM Differ Ent (7:41)
Review: Detroit's DJ Bone is and always has been one of his city's most underrated producers. In fact, the man is a killer behind the decks too, mashing up house and techno with that inimitable US speed that has also been championed by the likes of DJ Rush et al. His relationship with Bristol's Don't Be Afraid has been a fruitful one of the last year or two, releasing a couple of gnarly 12"s under the Differ-ENT moniker, a sound that expands upon his comparatively more rigid techno sound. This is the debut album under the Differ-ENT alias, and we most certainly agree that It's Good To Be Differ-ENT." There isn't a dud tune on here, and for an LP that focusses primarily on the dancefloor, it manages to convey a strong narrative throughout, built with mastery and dedication by this talented artist. Tunes like "Met Allergic Flew Antsy" or "Marvel Less" are muscly and fast-paced, but there is still plenty of exploration going on at their core, while remnants of electro can be heard on tunes like "Compute Her". This is a vibrant LP, made up of many different guises and shades, all finely tuned around the dancehall, and strangely fitting with the UK's lust for the broken sound. Recommended.

Electro In The Key Of Detroit Vol 1

  2. Blak Tony - "Holla Holla" (3:32)
  3. Posatronix - "Pure Techno Sound" (5:50)
  4. DJ K-1 - "Erase The Time" (6:36)
Review: From the minds of Direct Beat and Detroit Bass Classics, comes the first initial compilation of electro/techno heat. "Electro In The Key Of Detroit Vol 1" presents 4 proven dance floor dope and record crate staples that provide the hungry ears of masses the groove to move. A Side features two sure-fire steppers - a rare AUX 88 voyage entitled "Phantom Power" and Blak Tony's tempo-pushing "Holla Holla" finally see the light of day on this wax collectable, giving praise to Motor City footwork culture. On the flip, DJ K-1's "Erase The Time" rocked the airwaves and global clubs with its signature thumping style laced beneath alien-like melody and repetitive vocal structure while Posatronix's mutant-rhythm mantra, "Pure Techno Sound" pulls the weight of Detroit's street dance roots down to the origin of how to boogie in space. This collection of re-issued jams and new explorations is the must-have for the electro/techno & bass aficionado.

Review: AUX88 Bass Magnetic re-Issue 1993-2018. Back by popular demand, the same unique spirits that brought forth the
sound of Detroit streets and turned it into the futuristic soundscape known as "Techno-Bass", The Original members
have collaborated to re-issue their catalog 25+ years later. Starting with their 1st double pack LP, "Bass Magnetic"
(considered to be a mesh of influences between Miami bass and Detroit techno), AUX88 established themselves in an
effort to stay true to their roots in the streets and the clubs creating their own genre into a global dance culture. After
the release and production of their own documentary ("AUX88-Portrait of an Electronic Band"), the group celebrates its
now classic recordings. Harkening back to its first days on cassette tape to revive a future generation of vinyl
aficionados. AUX88's "Bass Magnetic" = Classic Detroit Electro

Review: One of the pleasing by-products of the recent electro revival has been the return of Aux 88, a legendary Detroit quartet whose armour plated, bass heavy take on the style made them one of Michigan's finest musical exports in the 1990s. "Counterparts", their first new album in ten years, is therefore big news. After opening with their warm, funk-fuelled take on Motor City techno - the sci-fi brilliance of "Intel" - the four-piece rushes through a range of killer, club-friendly electro jams in their trademark style (tough drums, funky bass, vocoder vocals). Highlights include the moody "My Electro Visions", the foreboding "Stereolized", the ghetto-tech influenced "Pothole Paradise" and the far-sighted, Cybotron-meets-Kraftwerk style goodness of "Electro In Key of Funk".

Review: Detroit electro's most bass-obsessed twosome, Aux88, recently reissued one of their most significant early releases, the forthright - and brilliant - "Direct Drive EP" from 1995. Thrillingly, they've decided to follow it up with a new issue of another '95 gem, "My AUX Mind", which backs the pair's brilliant, acid bass-propelled original mix (track 2) with fresh revisions from Egyptian Lover and, more impressively, Motor City electro originals Cybotron. The latter's version is superb: a spacey, high octane re-wire that's every bit as alluring as the duo's early 80s classics (think "Clear", "Techno City" etc). Egyptian Lover's main "remix" is slightly more intense with a more Kraftwerkian beat, while his accompanying "Acapella Mix" is a handy DJ tool for those who like vocoder vocals.
