Lords Of Miami
Cat: DOMESTICATED 006. Rel: 15 May 23
sshadess - "Discoteka" (6:28)
The Coomers - "Miso Soup" (7:20)
Girlcop - "Carbonara" (5:54)
Emsho Shoshe & Mat Fink - "Give Up" (5:09)
Review: 'Lords Of Miami' is a fantastic name for this new one from Domesticated, a label run by one of Berlin's best electro aficionados, Robyrt Hecht. Sshadess, The Coomers, Girlcop and Emscho Shoshe each contribute original cuts ranging from the janky to the smooth, with choice bits like 'Carbonara' remaining unpretentious and not-too-produced, yet also peppery on the glitches. Shoshe's 'Give Up' lends an experiment to vocal booty house too, adding an extra creep factor to the genre with freq-scooping phasers on the sample.

Une Fuite Chaussee Mais Sans Lacets (3:09)
Review: Dark Entries label regulars De-Bons-en-Pierre are back with more of their scuzzy delights in the form of their Card Short of a Full Deck EP. It's drenched in textbook sludginess as is often the way with Beau Wanzer and Maoupa Mazzochetti ever since they came together in 2016. These tunes were all originally written back in 2019 for live performances and really find the pair pushing at the boundaries of accepted social norms. The absurd sounds pair skipping rhythms with dark and freaky basslines and plenty of eerie rave chords to make for an all-new kind of dance floor energy.

Structure B (6:50)
Errant Core (5:53)
Incident/Congruency (6:01)
Pillars (5:22)
Review: Gladstone Deluxe comes bowling out all guns blazing with a pumped up offering to Data Disk - a new artist on a new label, but already sounding like the full package. Spherical Intelligence leads in with the snappy electro-techno of 'Structure B', an ear-snagging production shaped by crisp, needling drums and luscious synth work. 'Errant Core' is a more slippery affair which calls to mind the nasty synthesis of Silicon Scally, while 'Congruency' locks into a more tightly packed strain of electro. 'Pillars' completes the set with a tougher, techno-tinted workout that brings the Gladstone sound full circle to the start of the EP.

Review: Tresor home in on the happy musical 'accidents' of acclaimed techno duo Transparent Sound for this eponymous new triple retrospective album. Containing such neat audio-tools like the drill bit 'Slang City' and the spanner 'Windows To Your Sole', the originals heard here nail that sense of original, minimal, space-invadery, and melodic electro charm that many artists try to emulate, but few can properly muster up. Perhaps it can only really come from having made that kind of music at the time of its origination, which Transparent Sound luckily did.

Infinite Voyage (6:45)
Straight UP (7:52)
Review: With roots in electro, hip-hop, house and techno, you can never quite be sure what Orlando Voorn will serve up next. On this top-notch ten-inch single - his first for NOUN - he's in full on techno mode, puffing out his chest and striding confidently towards peak-time dancefloors. The legendary Dutch producer first offers up 'Infinite Voyage', a slamming, warehouse-ready workout that wraps buzzing, mutant electronic lead lines and star-fall around stomping beats and booming bass. On 'Straight UP' he opts for darker, bolder, stabbing bass, alien-sounding bleeps, jazzy synth stabs, heady aural textures and another tough-as-teak drum track.

Light Years Away (7:03)
Peeking Through Clouds (7:06)
In Transmission (7:24)
Review: It's five up for the Space Dust crew and once again they have come through with some irresistible electro explorations. Miles is the man in control for this one and he hits an otherworldly stride right off the bat - 'Hole In The System' has supple acid weaving its way through drilling bass and loose electro drums. It's deep and cosmic where 'Light Years Away' is a more punchy and direct tech house cut with its gaze fixed on the future. 'Peeking Through Clouds' has a gorgeously blissed-out vibe with long synths leaving neon trails as the drums pump the vibe. 'In Transmission' shows yet another look with some naughty broken beats and eerie synth work.

Review: Southern Magic is a sub-label of Secret Society Chile, but there is nothing submissive about the sounds of this new various artists 12". Valerio Vaudano soundtracks the end of the party with a big house bouncer full of vamping chord energy and euphoric little vocal stabs that cannot fail to send people home happy. Luca Piermattei then welcomes you to the after party with scuffed up and frazzled deep house drums under mind melting synth modulations on 'Quilmes.' Review: A dystopian barrage of mechanoid electro soundscapes comes courtesy of Silicon Scally, a new, scathing alias alias of rather legendary UK music producer Carl Finlow, best known as 20:20 Vision. Inspired by the oncoming anxiety of a technological hell (trust us, we all feel it, Carl), it's either join the AI death cult or die, as a straight 60+ minutes of generative electro stabbery and post-neural warpings make the entire project sound like a supernatural server processing vast numeric quantities of infectious bytes.

Jupiter Jack (Jupiter mix) (5:17)
Review: Since making his bow as Donald Dust six years ago, Tom Banks has codified a signature sound rich in jacking, Ron Hardy style drum tracks, surging Italo-disco melodies, late '80s European house sounds and 21st century nu-Italo tropes. All these ingredients - and more - can be heard on his latest EP for Bordello a Parigi. Opener 'Nausea', for example, audibly doffs a cap to Koto and Bobby Orlando, while the more percussive, sweat-soaked 'Sick Your Own' remix of the same track provides an energetic, peak-time ready alternative. There are two mixes, too, of 'Jupiter Jack': the new beat-meets-Italo-disco throb of the 'Groovy Mix' and the breathless mid-80s Chicago house flex of the 'Jupiter Mix'. Chiming, synth-pop-goes-electro number 'Noise in the Stairwell' completes a fine package.

Review: We cannot get enough of Washington, DC-based label Peoples Potential Unlimited. It deals in a particular brand of lo-fi funk and disco with a hit of the leftfield about it. This time out they unearth some lost recordings from Landyhill (Timex Social Club) Bay Area funk. It has the rude girl vocals of Jamie Vallo over crunchy beats, squeaking synth motifs and raw drum work. Word on the street is more demos have been found from the same era and are to be unveiled soon, but this previously unreleased jam is a great starter.

Review: When Magda and Jay Ahearn first unveiled the Blotter Trax project - rather mysteriously, it should be noted - the showcased cuts tended towards the more psychedelic end of the techno and electro spectrum. They've flipped the script on debut album Superconductor, a genuinely brilliant collection of funkier, far-sighted workouts that draws more on their joint love of Arthur Russell, early 80s NYC downtown disco, leftfield new-wave pop and flash-fried punk-funk. The addition of bass and guitar (from new third member Hannes Strobl and guest axe-slinger Shigeru Tanabu) adds an organic element, with lead vocals (courtesy of principal songwriter and singer Nina Hynes) humanising their sound further. A triumphant, if surprising, full-length debut that could turn out to be one of the electronic LPs of 2023.

Review: French purveyors of the dance, Baraka, do neat justice to their name (you should make a priority of seeing the psychedelic-trip-of-a-film, the label's namesake, if you haven't already) with a fresh four-tracker in the realm of cheeky, aquatic trance-dance. Summoning four local producer/DJ entities for remix duties, two per side, this is a high-concept, well-executed EP drawing on both Apollo-era electrance and tribal geometry tunnel-dives. Von Riu's closing tune is our highlight.

Review: Welcome to the Jotel California, where the kicks are analogue and the synths electric. That is certainly the cat eon this new Borrowed Time EP on Klasse Wrecks, anyway, which has four cuts of searing dance floor electro. 'Nabelmilch' (feat Babyblade) opens up in a blizzard of kicks, hits and withering sci-fi synths. 'Bulldoze' slows down with squelching bass lines and more roomy and cinematic vibes and 'Borrowed Time' then takes off to the stars on a punchy rhythm overlaid with rich bass pulses. 'Slow The Sunset' is another mid-tempo and atmospheric cut with bright acid lines and plenty of astral motifs.

The Fontainebleau (Salome remix) (5:31)
Review: Second time round for Jensen Interceptor's Afrika Bambaata and Soulsonic Force-sampling electro monster, 'The Fontainebleau', which first appeared way back in 2016. This time round, the Aussie's original mix - a warped, tooled-up take on 'Planet Rock' with added insanity and bass so warped and heavy it may give you nightmares - comes accompanied by a quartet of fresh revisions. Exzakt BFX steps up first with a moody, clandestine-sounding version that wisely employs some different electro beats, before Salome successfully pitches up and beefs up Jensen Interceptor's original mix. The final two mixes come from some genuine legends of the scene, with the Advent's 808 cowbell-and-sub-bass-heavy take being followed by a funky, squelchy and genuinely mood-enhancing revision by DJ Godfather.

Four tracks of the atmospherically-padded variety, with a temperate, dramatic feel to boot, play across the two sides and four separated grooves of 'Entre Deux'. As the name evokes, we're given the sense of moving through various alternate doorways and telecasted techno-portals, each of which lead to a different soundworld - the door to 'No Minding' leading to a chill dreamscape, and 'FBG' a more curious vista of bliss - and is a welcome addition to the Cyphon catalogue.

Notturna (3:23)
Review: Adiel's Danza Tribale adventures continue apace as she delivers the fourteenth release on her label. As well as exploring immersive, non-standard rhythms in her well-established style, the Italian artist is also folding some more emotive, trance and pop-informed elements into her sound. 'Nulla Resta' has a bombastic, main stage festival quality to its composition, while 'Sospesa' edges some brooding songwriting qualities into an intricate, elegant d&b-styled production. 'Parole' switches things up with a lighter mood led by organic instrumentation and plucked string leads and 'Notturna' closes the EP out with yet more epic production that confirms the techno stalwart heading into fresh pastures away from the strictures of pure club music.

Review: .Teslasonic's new album Foundation is a concept work set in the future, at a time when the world as we know it has long since been forgotten and humans have colonised the rest of the rocks in our galaxy. It features rapper and psychohistorian Donnie Ozone who predicts the future through his rhymes, divided into six parts, each of which pertains to a bigger whole. Musically it is a kinetic electro record with old school beat box and new school cyborg funk all fused together. It's a physical but thought provoking listen that will jack any floor and leave you plenty to mull over.

Into A Sampler (Kris Menace remix) (4:43)
Review: Vincent Fries second album as Italo Brutalo, the throbbing, darkwave and EBM-influenced heaviness of Heartware, has been given the remix treatment. There's eight high-grade, club-focused reworks to choose from, with our picks of a very strong bunch including CYRK's dark, twisted and funk-fuelled electro re-imagining of 'Reach Horizon', the glossy, big studio Italo-disco brilliance of Mufti's rub of 'Dream Machine' (think Stephen Hague producing the Pet Shop Boys circa 1986) and Shubostar's thickset, melody-rich, Bobby Orlando-influenced rework of 'Heat of the Night'. We'd also recommend checking out the two takes of 'Into a Sampler'. There's a raw, intense and breathless dark Italo-disco tweak courtesy of Fabrizio Mammarella, and a more chugging, atmospheric rewire by Kris Menace.

He really shows his range here with a record that draws on his experiences of playing around the world in all sorts of different settings. Elsewhere there is the high-speed electro-funk of 'Flight Of Fancy' and the introspective downbeat trip 'Send Love To The Future' making this a varied and vital affair.

Review: As far as we can tell, Cyril The Great is relatively new on the scene, and certainly this is the first release on the Brave Potatoes label. In the absence of hard facts, we must zero in on the sound, and Cyril's got that on lock. If you appreciate hardware jams which sound like someone speaking through the circuitry, you're going to dig this record. Ostensibly this is braindance-esque electro with a home-listening sensibility, but it swerves any particular genre tropes to become its own idiosyncratic thing, which is of course the pathway to the most interesting music. If you love 303s given a proper workout until they truly sing, you'll be more than satisfied with this plucky spud.

Review: NOAR Records goes big for its debut release by enlisting several fresh-thinking producers to contribute one track each to this limited edition VA. It is a brilliantly mixed bag, with Friedrich Ernst's 'Clone Scratch' bringing unsettling electro madness to start and The Isolator's 'Locknr01' exploring more stripped-back and sparse sounds that are built on neck-snapping breaks. Anachronism's 'Lost Control By Distance' is the sort of turbulent sonic climax you get in during the boss battle moments of a sci-fi movie, and a trio of B-side cuts keep up the originality with Planetary Secrets' 'Establishment' a particular highlight.

Review: Way back in 1998, New York techno scene stalwart John Selway opened his Zoids Volume 2 EP with a quirky chunk of razor-sharp, acid-fired electro called 'Millennium Sound'. On the eve of its 25th birthday, Selway has decided to get the track remixed by some serious electro talents. Keith Tenniswood kicks things off as Radioactive Man, offering a fiendishly sub0heavy, alien-sounding electro rub that's guaranteed to put extra pressure on bassbins and sub cabinets, before Selway himself re-frames the cut as a moody, foreboding chunk of sci-fi electro excellence. Over on the flip, Sync 24 delivers a more percussively intense and weighty dark electro roller, while Transparent Sound joins the dots between classic 80s electro and the cybernetic moodiness of Selway's 1998 mix.

This third part from the man born Emile Facey is another emotional rollercoaster that conveys the wintry scenes in which they were written while also taking you on to the more warm and optimistic light of spring. He does so with his uniquely storytelling electro - wispy melodies that convey real meaning and human emotion over compelling rhythms. 'L'Esprit' then layers up massive rubbery kicks with chattering percussion and moody chords before 'Go Beyond' shuts down with an eerie lead synth over marching drums that mean business.

From utterly savage, uncompromising breaks ('Filled With Oil') to the more deconstructed, experimental spoken word exploration ('Fourisfourisnoanswer') via funkier, more groove-based cuts ('Slack It Off'), she weaves between worlds with a fizzy balance of unpredictability and joyous danger. Nothing is off the table.

Review: Germany's always club-ready label Frank Music is back with another beefy 12" that finds mainstays and newcomers unite in fine fashion. Johannes Albert and Lauer open up with a trio of collaborations that go from full throttle, chord led house on 'Based on Boss' to the deeper grooves of 'Four 44' and far sighted, soul drenched tech of 'Posh-O-Rama'. Boris Dlugosch, Marc Romboy & CAR step up on the B-side with the woozy and hypnotic 'Survivor' which also gets remixed by Johannes Albert into something more raw. Useful grooves for sure.

Review: The superb Astra Spectra series has provided us with many magnificent new sounds so it's a shame that this is the last of the eight part project. Alas, all good things must come to an end and so it does with one more quality EP. Label co-founder Syrte steps up for this one with an artful EP that fuses IDM, electro and ambient synth designs into deep space journeys. All six tracks are brain frying, synapse twitching jams that take you into another dimension. Also included is a collaboration with Science Cult co-operator Aura Nox to round it out in style.

Review: Jesse Anderson has been making beats since the 1990s but Jessbeatz is a new alias that debuted last year. He now brigs it back for a second outing, this time via Electrostatic in the US. 'Alien Invasion' finds him exploring a stark electro sound with corrugated basslines and bright sonic sparks firing over smoother pads. It's a track full of intrigue and perfect for building atmosphere. 'Light Years' then picks up the pace and is a high speed dance floor assault with lashings of synths flashing about the mix as you race through the cosmos at high speed.

Review: Yaleesa Hall's track record over nearly 10 years is nigh-on flawless, evolving to form an integral part of the Dutch techno and electro stable Will & Ink with release upon release of inspired edginess from the dark and sticky shadows of machine music. That's as true as it ever was on this latest Will & Ink drop, which follows four variations on an excursion into pneumatic, taut electro loaded with weapons-grade bass throb and bolstered by iron cladding. There's detail and dynamic sound design fizzing in and out of every bar, and that's where the magic lies on this latest transmission from one of the best doing it right now.

Review: Two And Half Records make the decision here to try and rid the A and B-side distinction on records that we are all very familiar with and instead they refer to each face of their latest 12" as 'dance' and 'listen.'' It makes sense frankly and is often how things go anyway. Swiss duo Quismi kick off this one with twitchy and narcotic tech house with an old school bent. French artist Groenogen then gets wild with bright melodies and grinding synths, r&b vocals and high speed tech funk on 'Twinkle Dance' while ILyes offers the tech silkiness of 'Starting Now.' On the flip is a trio of less direct, more experimental sounds that sure do offer plenty to get lost in on headphones.

Review: Ukrainian DJ and producer Koloah makes a frank and mechanical style of electro, exemplified easily by his latest 'Persian Haze' EP for Alien Communications. He's also otherwise known as Tropical Echobird and Voin Oruwu, two remarkably inventive aliases to say the least, but the Koloah alias is certainly his main node. Breaking from former collabs with the likes of Nocow, Pixelord, and Vakula, the EP is stark and guttural; our highlight has to be 'Don't Mess Up', which leans most into the more minimal side of his palette, its backing pads resounding like glassy refractions heard in an infinitely mechanistic astral plane.

Review: Georgian IDM artist Gacha Bakradze commands a loyal fanbase for his enchanting emanations in the style. The latest example comes in the form of 'Forget', his most recent contribution to Turkish pushers of the craft, Oath. Fluid movements of electro clankings and modular groovework extend far and deep into a gaseous, sulphuric unknown, while airier explorations of spirituality are laid down on the vocal-sample-led 'What You Say' and the wonderfully three-chord-backboned janker, 'Form'. 'Forget' isn't a project for shallow listens; take it slow.

Originally this was the last track on their self-titled 1983 cassette only album on the P.A.P. label. It's basically unknown because it never landed on wax but had it done it would no double be a game changing classic. It's an eight minute opus driven by exhilarating electro breaks and laden with drums and effects that echo the sounds of Detroit. It's a proto-techno track straight out of Bremen that still sounds unique and futuristic today.

Review: Rain & White Transit Van kick off a new collaborative project with this first EP on Damo B's Emotec label, and what an inspired cosmic trip it is. 'Cliffdive' is a subtle opener with thinking cosmic leads and lazy mid-tempo groves sweeping you up and depositing you amongst the stars. 'Castaway' then puts crunchy drum breaks front and centre, waiting around the edges with mystic chords and melancholic emotions. There is high-speed electro slickness to 'Park' complete with flashes of acid and 'Sin' closes with a mix of muted synth modulations, warped metal surfaces and bumping electro beats.

This latest limited 7" starts with 'Manctronix', a manic mix of brutal breakbeats, fizzing acid madness and eerie vocals that are chopped up and well deployed throughout the mix. The electronic pioneers were known for their perfect melodies and compelling rhythms and 1989's Trust is no different. It's a superb selection of electro-pop sounds skewed through their own erotic lens. Despite the signature coldest of their sounds, these tracks somehow exude plenty of warmth. Form the deep-frozen synths of 'Watching You' and the glacial aesthetics of 'Deep Velvet' this is early and essential tacker from these enduring pioneers.

He celebrates that milestone with this, Touch, his first ever instrumental solo album and the sequel to his previous album LP at the same time. It is a bristling, energetic mix of rhythms and beats that will get you moving your body in no time. Review: Wherein Dutchman Vincent lays down a heartfelt study of the soul entitled 'Pre Melancholy'. His findings are as follows... Before the melancholy one can expect a wave of emotions and pressures, all of them ingredients for a tumultuous storm that flies in a whole flurry of directions. Technoid drum & bass causing anxiety with every rolling fill ('Mono No Aware'), timeless breaks triggering moments of unsolicited joy ('Agent Of Distraction') and spacious leftfield that's so disarming and abyssal that it comes in two forms ('Yonghegong Lama Temple Exit F'). Embrace the melancholy.

Up on the A-side is 'Void 93,' a terse mix of busted breaks, heavy bass hits and jungle energy that's run through with dark vocal snippets. It's a hard-ass cut that will fill the club with a caustic sound. On the flip is 'Knuckle Bone' with more dub-wise vocal elements and heavy, tumbling drums and neck-snapping hits. Review: The debut EP by Stranger In Paradise, a new solo project of Irish producer Dibby Dougherty, thoroughly impresses us, thanks to its clever use of suspense in melody and sensitive treatment of an often unsensitive genre. Mixed for a subtler breed of listener than your average wiry electro enjoyer, the likes of 'The Waves Of Hamo Bay' and 'Stranger In Paradise' are softly mixed, with pads and synths prioritised before drums, recalling the feeling of soaring over utopian Metropoli in a luxury hovercar - not scouring their desolate post-apocalyptic ruins, as is a more common theme in much electro. Shinra and Gurd's remixes are simpler, but still provide a nice counterpoint to the A-side's subtle cleverness.

Review: Hybrid Collective is a new label set out to bring together all forms of electro. The first release is a powerful statement of intent that draws together a crack team of sonic explorers who are all hell bent on blowing up the dance floor. The brand of extra the opener explores is industrial and mechanical, with Kim Cosmik's 'The Ascent' twisting metal and contorting synths into a ragged rhythm. The Droid's 'Upgrade' is a more futuristic blend of cyborg funk and Broken Joe's 'Fallen Crane' is full of spooky lines and jittery rhythms. Ekata's 'Dark Drive' rounds out with a straight ahead banger.

The label is a natural home for Koch's scuffed and evocative strain of electronica, where the crunch of lo-fi electro serves as a vessel for strung-out synthesis that couldn't care less about the dancefloor. There's space for stripped down beat tracks, as on the mechanised 'Front Two' and purring 'Kolovento', but this is machine music as a mode of expression for your darkest dystopian fantasies. Sink into closing track 'Voyage Voyage' and you'll hear an orchestra of decaying circuits and cranky filters spelling out your deepest future shock fantasies.

Telling the story of the artist "hidden in the shadow of his room" - trying to make sense of a recent transformation into an extrahuman, proto-Drexciyan entity known as "Jauzas the Shining" - this EP is a noxiously bubbling, effervescent slow-release of amnestic venom from just five digisonic vials.
