Fish Tubes (Hammer & Mor Elian remixes)
Cat: CAI 004. Rel: 03 Oct 18
  1. Test Tubes (Hammer remix V8) (6:55)
  2. Fishbowl (Mor Elian remix) (5:59)
Review: Some six months after Paul "Scuba" Rose delivered a fine first album from his vowel-free SCB project, Hammer and Mor Elian step up to remix two of that set's most celebrated tracks. Bicep associate Hammer handles "Test Tubes", rolling out a mix bristling with crispy percussion, mind-mangling electronic riffs, foreboding electronic bass and chiming melodies. In contrast, LA producer and Hypercolour regular Mor Elian opts for a more loose-limbed and broken rhythmic approach, cannily showcasing her love of alien electronics and fuzzy ambient textures over stabbing analogue bass and sweaty, jazz-wise machine drums.

  7. June - "Idealized States Of Perfection" (3:37)
Review: Some 14 years after volume three first appeared in stores, Suction has decided to re-launch its Snow Robots compilation series. Happily, the quality threshold remains as high as it was first time around. The seven tracks feature a mixture of metallic electro, fuzzy minimal wave and industrial electronica, with occasional inspired forays into tongue-in-cheek electro-disco (Ceramic Blast Furnace's "Sampling the Blast Furnace" - sample lyric: "pouring passion down your throat like concrete") and druggy, ultra-muscular Italo-disco ("Pulsdisco 1.2" by Celldod). It's naturally far more killer than filler, with notable contributions from Mr Reliable himself, Beau Wanzer and former Berceuse Heroique artist Morah.

Review: Following up some great releases by the likes of Greek analogue punk Morah, Gavin Pykerman aka Koova and French veteran Automat - London's Brokntoys are back with a wicked double header. On the A side of this Split EP we have Identified Patient (Pinkman/Common Thread) who serves up the guttural slo-mo techno of "Weerlos" and the electro-noir body music of "Stretch Out For Nothing". On the flip, the EBM/industrial vibe continues with Nurse boss Ali Najafi aka Scarlit Port - who delivers the slow burning sleaze of "Marg" (reminiscent of Front 242 circa Geography) and the factory floor groove of "Touch U Without Touchin Ur Skin" powered by appropriate metallic clangs, acidic arpeggios and brooding strings.

Review: A year on from their last deep dive into the unreleased archives of Dutch producer Erik "RX-101" Jong, Suction Records has re-opened the vaults and put together the artist's first ever full-length excursion. As with their previous archival RX-101 releases, all the material on "Dopamine" was recorded between 1997 and '99. It sees the little-known Dutch producer offer up a range of melodious and atmospheric IDM and ambient techno tracks that were massively influenced by the early-to-mid '90s output of Warp Records and the more meditative and luscious works of Richard D James as Aphex Twin and Polygon Window. It's a wonderfully emotive excursion all told; an impeccably produced and impressively sequenced set that should be considered a long lost classic of '90s electronica.

Review: With a true curation of artists, this double LP marks the eclectic and passionate works from Public System. The latest in the synth-heavy sludgedown from the ever impressive imprint, invites a new cast of characters into the dungeon dance. The common theme throughout this collection, seems to be wide, slowed down melancholy. Some tracks take a floor-focused jump, while others demand the attentive consumption of a more serene setting. These two discs are packed with dynamic, chugging, and forward thinking jams that make you mesh all things the imprint is clearly passionate for.

Review: Veteran Toronto-based producer Gregory de Rocher's career spans over 20 years, where he has released on the likes of City Centre Offices, Ersatz Audio and his own Suction Records - which he co-founded in 1997 with like-minded producer Jason Amm (aka Solvent). They present a collection of salvaged tape recordings from 1996 under de Rocher's lesser known Pest(e) moniker. A fascinating assortment of analogue electronics originally intended as a demo, it was at one point almost released on seminal UK label Skam but de Rocher ended up releasing it himself under the Lowfish alias - this being his debut album under the moniker. He uses broad strokes to paint a picture across the various tracks: from the jungle reductions of "Sieve", cosmic electro of "Agamemnon", to the evocative IDM trip of "Polychromerats" and hypnotic drone piece "Lungs Of The Clock".

Antonin Hifda aka Daif takes up the A side, offering up the hardcore rave reductions of "Another Version Of The Truth" followed by the deep down Detroit styled electro beats of "Devil". Review: Last March Suction Records released "Dopamine", an album of unreleased late 1990s recordings by obscure and arguably overlooked Dutch producer Erik Jong AKA RX 101. "Serenity", the sequel, was compiled from tapes of tracks recorded in the same period. It's a little different to its predecessor, offering creepier, drowsier melodies and far more robust, redlined beats - the kind of metallic, mutant IDM drums associated with the mid-to-late 1990s output of both Autechre and Aphex Twin. The quality threshold remains high throughout, making us wonder why Jong's inspired creations weren't released when he made them. Whatever the reason, it's great that we now get to wallow in his soon-to-be-classic 90s IDM treats.

Review: Kuldaboli is part of the Stilleben family and has helped define its sound with his searing take on electro. This time around he dials back the crazy and offers up some more thoughtful and mysterious electro that kicks off with the bottom-wiggling boom bap and gurgling bassline of "Eolileg Mannvera". Things slow down on the more eerie and unsettling "Kaldir Straumar" then its an all out computer game assault on "Lazer Tag" which is pristine digital perfection. "Where Are You" is a real floor wrecker and last of all alien life forms inhabit the haunting "Vakan Endalausa".

  4. Noamm - "Telecommunication" (3:52)
Review: If icy, robotic club electro is your thing, we'd recommend picking up this multi-artist EP from Luke Eargoggle's Stilleben Records imprint. Cygnus kicks things off with the sleazy hustle of "Download Her", a decidedly wonky but on-point number that comes complete with Egyptian Lover style spoken word vocals, before Kuldaboli delivers a funky, weighty and stripped-back club rocker rich in twisted acid bass, mind-altering noises and robotic club beats. Over on side B, Rodney weighs in with the up-tempo deep space rumble of "This Isn't Something I Want Anymore", whose acid style bassline is funky as hell (and twice as hot), while Naoamm channels the spirit of both Kraftwerk and Drexciya on the bleep-laden heaviness of "Telecommunication".

Review: In advance of release, Diagonal and Elon Katz have been particularly mysterious when it comes to the contents of The Human Pet. Instead of the usual press release, they simply emailed journalists a bizarre list of "care instructions" for said mythical companion. Katz, who rose to prominence as part of Streetwalker and White Car, is something of a bombastic, electronic eccentric, and The Human Pet is ostensibly a pop album dragged through several hedges backwards. Expect impassioned, stylized vocals, twisted boogie synths, scattergun electronics, bizarre beats, breakcore style cut-up madness, and crusty special effects. Oh, and discernible nods to EBM, industrial and Autechre.

Review: To date the Electronic Leatherette releases have featured a whole spread of noirish synth brandishing producers on two split 12"s, including Heinrich Dressel and Plant43. This third trip out into the grubby climes of the wave-inspired scene comes courtesy of Exhausted Modern and CCO, both of whom know a thing or two about channeling sinister monosynths and brittle drum machine rhythms that bridge the gap between the DIY 80s and these hardware abundant times. Exhausted Modern's "Loss Of Self-Identity" is especially strong, while CCO's "Serendipity " struts with a satisfyingly deep and nagging acid twist.

  2. De Ton Absence (Timothy J Fairplay remix) (6:26)
Review: Electronic Leatherette continue their trips into the ethereal and seductive world of minimal wave with this new single from label founders Dmitry Distant and Arnaud Lazlaud. "De Ton Absence" is an artfully sculpted synth ballad bathed in reverb and Lazlaud's dreamy vocals - the end result is something both yearning and sinister, like the best minimal wave should be. On the flip, the balladry gets a shot of pure adrenaline as Timothy J Fairplay creates a taut, feisty electro belter out of the raw ingredients for a remix that should find favour with more uptempo dancefloors.

Review: Back in March, Icelandic techno stalwart Felix Leifur inaugurated Lagaffe Tales' BROT series with a quartet of decidedly punishing cuts that joined the dots between icy electro and bustling, rave-era breakbeat. He's at it again here, opening with bass-heavy hedonism of "Brot 5" - a sweaty fusion of energy-packed breakbeats, dubbed-out chords and weighty sub bass - before brilliantly fusing dub techno and club electro on the deep and spaced-out "Brot 6". Over on the flip, "Brot 7" is a crunchy electro box jam and "Brot 8" is a rolling mixture of locked-in beats, rubbery bass tones, trippy aural textures and mind-mangling electronics.

Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

Review: Last year we heard the first installment of the Brot trilogy by Reykjavik's Felix Leifur on Lagaffe Tales, which reflects the country's unforgiving, barren landscape. Now we come full circle with the final edition of the series, where Leifur continues to push the threshold of UK-influenced dance music. Featuring evocative liquid dnb steppers like "Brot 10" reminiscent of legends like LTJ Bukem and Alex Reece, electro style bass crossing over into classic junglist aesthetics on "Brot 11" and arguably best of all - the dark dystopian techstep of closer "Brot 13" which calls to mind the late '90s sound of London.

  2. Ride It
  3. Tronic Guetto
  4. Urban Beat
Review: Reckless Ron Cook belatedly gets his chance to shine courtesy of Big Strick's 7 Days Entertainment label on this Lost Tapes 12" that presents four cuts from the producer's archives. The former Submerge and Metroplex artist is no stranger to 7 Days Entertainment having signalled his return from the wilderness with "Night Moves" a rattling, electrofied contribution to last year's Resivior Dogs LP from Big Strick. That track should set the tone for what you can expect on this 12" which snaps viciously into action with the viper like Detroit machine funk of "Electro Soul" and the pace doesn't relent from there until "Urban Beat" reaches the run out groove.

  3. Put On Our Classics (5:05)
  4. End Of The Nite (5:33)
Review: Wonky and off-kilter cuts from London-based producer Eleanor Pinfold aka Elles. This release is her first for Violet's Lisbon-based imprint Naive, and follows her 2019 release "emo_ecstasy_everything" on their experimental sub-label Naivety. Eloquently described as "a melodic ode to melancholy moments spent in clubs and broken romances captured in the snapshots of a strobe", UK club sounds of various eras definitely permeate these tracks. From the intoxicating slo-mo bass of "Gotchu" to the cheeky 2-stepper "Put On Our Classics" or the classic house throwback sounds of "End Of The Nite". All life-affirming vocals and hands in the air pianos that hark back to the namesake of the EP's title.

  4. Dayi Mohsen (4:36)
Review: The Shahr Farang label is always an interesting one to check in with, sometimes veering towards fragile ambience as much as intriguing beat constructions. Here, label mainstay Sohrab invites Erik Jahaali to join in on the tough yet atmospheric thrust of "Industriegebiet", before he goes it alone on the moody beatless blanket of sound that is "Fasseleh". Jahaali is back on board for "Skypainter," which pivots around dusty pads and subtle, snaking rhythms in the deepest techno tradition. "Dayi Mohsen" is the surprise of the record, dropping into a Mo Wax style funk that should soothe all manner of chill out room scenarios.

  3. What You Want (Silicon Scally remix) (7:09)
  4. What You Want (6:46)
Review: Aphelion is a Greek producer who is part of the Equations Collective, and here he offers up his first ever release. Clearly well schooled in production, the atmospheres of his tracks belie his debutant status as he kicks off with the mutant bass and pounding kicks of "Volatile Radiance". More warped bass characterises the sparse and eerie "Cosmic Vibrations" before Silicon Scally aka Carl Finlow heads off in a more menacing direction on his remix of "What You Want". The original is a more haunting and paranoid affair that has you looking over your shoulder.

  4. Alessandro Adriani - "Cosmic Transmissions" (5:56)
  5. Morah - "Track 5" (5:00)
Review: Russian label Mosaique has thus far carried some serious heat from artists like JASSS, Caron and Savage Grounds, and now they're shifting their nightmarish electro tendencies back to the various artists format of their Universe series. Umwelt leads the charge on this second installment with the eerie machine snarl of "Fallen Empire", followed up by two versions of the devilish "Sleep When You Die" by Moralez & The Horrorist. Alessandro Adriani is first up on the B side with the driving, noirish techno pulse of "Cosmic Transmissions," and then Morah rounds things off with the squelchy, spiky workout "Track 5".

  1. Illusion (4:27)
  2. Space Cowboy (5:45)
  3. The Wizard Of Oz (5:54)
Review: Lunar Orbiter Program's latest batch of messages from the stars comes courtesy of Mr Blatman, a mysterious debutant of unknown origin. Our little-known hero begins by battering us senseless via the heavily, distorted electro beats, spacey pads and bubbly acid lines of "Illusion", before opting for a more electrofunk-fueled flex on ghetto-tech influenced workout "Space Cowboy" (think DMX Krew meets DJ Nasty and you're close). Finally, after much dancing in the moonlight, he decides to simmer things down with "The Wizard of Oz", a woozy, deep and dreamy chunk of electro moodiness. A rock solid debut all told.
