Review: Wibo Lammerts is W1BO and he sadly and suddenly passed away back in mid-August 2022. He had worked with this label on his debut album over the course of the last two years. He had always said the long player would be his legacy and that turned out to be all too true. With the support of Wibo's family, U-TRAX is doing what is right and putting out the album in his honour. When Humans Ruled The Earth is a complete and coherent electro overview across 11 visceral tracks. There are acid lacerations, jacked-up cyborg bangers and elastic drum workouts wired up with scintillating synths.

Review: Last years label compilation 'SUBsidence' confirmed Andrea Parker’s Touchin’ Bass label as part of the electronic elite, and now we have the label's first solo artist album in the shape of the enigmatic Wee DJs. The aptly named 'Fear & Lothian' features abstract electro and dark menacing beats from one of Scotland’s finest electronic producers.

Review: Sin Hilo serves up a fantastic electro full length here from White Solar Dog. It i apparently an alias of a well known artist with more than two decades of analogical exploration and collecting record behind them, as well as plenty of gigs in Barcelona in their books. The albums presented with Vj Render as a sophisticated audiovisual live experience, but until then the music itself is enough to keep your mind and body busy. Some of it is all out club-ready electro like 'Throught All Dimensions,' while 'Thrill Me/Kill Me' is a gorgeous vocal track. Elsewhere 'Beyond Space (MOY remix)' takes it deep and is a real highlight.

Vibes New & Rare Music 2 Part 2
Rick WILHITE / VARIOUS
Cat: RHM 010.2. Rel: 27 Aug 14
Moodymann - "Momma"
Sean Tate - "A Matter Of Honor" (Wilhite remix)
Los Hermanos - "It's The Future"
DJ Stingray - "Temporary Bond"
TJ Dumas & Raybone Jones - "Runnin 2 U"
Rick & Calvin - "Memories Analia"
Orlando Voorn - "The Recipe"
K-Alexi - "Head Banger"
Review: Vibes New & Rare Music 2 reaches it's conclusion here as Rush Hour drop the second and final double vinyl helping of the Rick Wilhite curated compilation with a suitably high profile cast of contributors involved. If you checked Part One which dropped earlier this year, you'll know Wilhite has expanded the remit to include producers from Chicago and New York - and if you didn't check it what's wrong with you! Any compilation that starts with an exclusive cut from Moodymann is gonna be good, and the dusty, disjointed "Momma" sets the tone quality wise for what follows. The Godson himself delivers a thunderous, stripped back take on "A Matter of Honour" by Sean Tate and this dukes it out with the apocalyptic electro of DJ Stingray and the rugged beatdown of Orlando Voorn as our favourites from this great collection.

Review: As if his Musar-released album Resa wasn't quite enough electronic soul soothing this year, experimental producer Jacob Wiltshire returns with another super-limited offering in the form of Aux 4424. A much more dancefloor-focused affair, taking in strong doses of breakbeat, bleep bass, jungle and electro, it's a dark, tense side to the Berlin-based producer. Highlights include the early J Majik style two-step slices on 'Land Of Dreams', the dub techno and jungle bubbles of 'Cornish Yarg' and the gentle breakbeat climax of the finale 'Hig'. Grab it while you can.

Review: We can probably no longer keep going on about the electro resurgence or revival. By now it seems like the genre has pretty much become as universally popular and ever-present as house and techno. Which is fine, especially when we get gems like this on such a regular basis. It is a new album from Barcelona's Withhold on their own label, which only launched in 2020 but has been pretty prolific since with some 20 odd releases and most coming without any artist info. This is glistening and stylish electro that pairs driving rhythms with plenty of fine synth craft, making it a fine ride for mind, body and soul.

Review: A deeply mysterious label from Barcelona, Withhold specialise in impactful trance-breaks and IDM that tend towards the vanguard, prioritising "hidden artists" whose proclivites might not be so self-promoting. This self-effacing, anonymizing tendency in dance music is often indicative of good quality, especially when done for the right reasons. It's not really something you can work out rationally, in fact; you just have to go by your best senses. And we get a good vibe from Withhold, not least from this latest long-player of curious, gushy delights. We're not sure which artists (whether individual or many) lie behind each track, but perhaps this rejection of authorship encourages deeper listening: highlights include the cleverly tricksy 'Achanhuwlmx' and the quaintly-imaged 'Order Of 11'. This album is best received by the listener at its most emotive, most cascading moments.

Review: Soviett Records is a label set up by a crew of hardcore street music lovers. It draws from rock-n-roll and hip-hop and punk-rave and is on a mission to "release music with a positive intent." The first offering is a great start: it serves up 17 glistening tracks of sparkling and analogue electro, boom-bap and hip-hop that harks back to the 80s but has one foot in the future. This is body music to make you move, complete with scratching, tons of 808s and 909s and funk to spare.

Review: Last year, Andrew Weatherall launched yet another collaborative project, joining forces with long-time pal and occasional studio partner Nina Walsh as The Woodleigh Research Facility. Here, they continue their partnership with The Phoenix Suburb (And Other Stories), a fine debut album that marks the first material on Weatherall's Rotters Golf Club imprint since 2013. Rooted in the Detroit end of electro, but with more than a hint of the early, IDM influenced escapades of the former Junior Boys Own man's Two Lone Swordsmen project, it's a set that combines moments of snappy dancefloor heaviness with more evocative, ambient-influenced fare. There are, of course, plenty of intriguing aural references to shared influences - psychedelia, rockabilly, Arabic music, and so on - scattered throughout, making it an intriguing and entertaining proposition.

Review: Andrew Weatherall was many things - a stylish gent, storyteller, killer DJ, label owner, guitar payer, remixer and respected collaborator. It is the latter of those that comes to the fore here on Phonox Nights, the final album he was working on before his sad passing in February 2020. He was doing so alongside Nina Walsh with whom he had worked so often and for so long. The album is named after the club in which it had been road tested and is one that traverses his late-era sound - namely chugging disco, dark and psychedelic dub, minimal techno grooves and plenty of his own unique sense of melody.
