Hunter EP (180 gram vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: SCN 006. Rel: 09 Dec 14
  1. Hunter
  2. Hunter (Versalife mix)
  3. Cabal
  4. Millennium 2.2
Review: Asok's Scenery imprint continues to go from strength to strength, with the boss man following up Bantam Lions' recent Recollections EP with a single of his own. "Hunter" is undoubtedly the Liverpool-based producer's strongest track yet, with woozy, soft-focus chords and alien electronics riding a dusty, analogue-rich groove. As with much of the label's recent output, there are distinct hints of Mood Hut, Future Times and Mister Saturday Night. Experienced producer Versalife reworks the title track, turning it into a blissful chunk of Drexciya-style electro. Flip to the B-side for "Cabal", an ultra-deep and occasionally discordant concoction, and the fuzzy, Detroit-influenced bounce of "Millennium 2.2".

  5. Cygnus - "Pink Lipstick" (feat Dolly Vicious) (3:10)
Review: Could there be a new techno sound emerging from the depths of the Texas desert? Kind of like the Vancouver house sound, but a bit grainer and dustier? Perhaps, yes, and Texas Recordings Underground might just be the ticket. It's a five-person lockdown here, and the emergent Cygnus delivers to stone cold electro chillers in "Make The Brain Relax" and "Pink Lipstick"; not your ordinary kind of electro, something in between Drexciya and the house sound of Chicago - excellent. We also have ERP aka Convextion with "Tandy Center", a rolling, cybernetic techno-morph; Vectorvision with the dripping synths of "Beta Cloud", and "Goron" by Textasy, a metallic, drum-led piece with an eerie vibe. A total winner, and something of a regional debut from the US! Keep it comin'.

Assassin (12")

  1. DJ Stingray - "Assassin"
  2. Vin Sol - "Edges Of A Vortex"
Review: Having first debuted on Unknown To The Unknown back in 2011, Detroit electro icon Sherard 'Stingray' Ingram makes a triumphant return to the label overseen by DJ Haus with one of his most intense productions yet! "Assassin" is vicious, ghetto ready electro at its nastiest and arrives at the end of a year when Ingram's been busy colluding with Drexciya pal Gerald Donald under the NRSB-11 banner. Complementing this, So Wavey Records boss (and sometime John Candy lookalike) Vin Sol gets the opportunity to have his anthem "Edge Of A Vortex" pressed on vinyl, after the track burnt an indelible digital hole in the internet when it first surfaced last year.

A Selection Of Works Part 1 (140 gram vinyl double 12")

  6. Silicon Scally - "Auton" (6:07)
  7. Silicon Scally - "Pace" (7:03)
  8. Carl Finlow - "Wafer Thin" (6:28)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Carl Finlow is something of a cult hero in the British electronic underground, having turned his hand to many aliases and styles without pandering to hype, and that's surely why the discerning For Those That Knoe label have deemed him worthy of a showcase release. His works as Silicon Scally are a particular highlight, channeling the seediest streams of Detroit electro and injecting a little of that UK verve and swagger into the mix, with invariably stunning results. Watch out for the seductive bite of "Dark Matter" and the dystopian funk of "Deep Dissolve", but in truth every selection on this choice double pack is worthy of some serious platter time.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Carl Finlow is one of the great unsung heroes of British electronic music, with a raft of aliases and projects that burst with inventive production, warmth and a sense of fun that so much slickly produced techno and electro misses. For Those That Knoe are doing the right thing in gathering together some choice cuts from over the years - the Voice Stealer jams in particular stand out with their miscreant tones and overall uneasy atmosphere tapping into the malaise of the darker Drexciya-related output. There are all shades of electro to be enjoyed on here though, and hopefully it'll place Finlow on the radar for a few more heads.

  3. Perm - "All" (6:16)
  4. Credit 00 - "On Hold" (4:43)
Review: The first release from R.A.N.D Muzik Recordings, a new venture from Gunnar Heuschkel and Jan Freund's Leipzig-based pressing plant, is either a statement of intent or a collection of killer cuts from artists they've previously dealt with. Either way, it's something of a treat from start to finish. For proof, check the early Orbital-goes-electro positivity of Varum's "Das Busch", the psychedelic, acid-fired electro trip of Perm's thoroughly intoxicated "All", and the low-slung, pitched-down, lo-fi electro swing of Uncanny Valley regular Credit 00's fine "On Hold". If that's not enough to sway you, Robyrt Hecht and XY0185 do a passable impression of Drexciya on bustling opener "The Left Lane".

  4. VC-118A - "Face The Waves" (4:40)
Review: Ireland's Lunar Disko is back in the game with another one of their immensely entertaining collaborative EPs, and this one is featuring a selection of artists whom we feel particularly fond of. For starters, our man man John Heckle is in the place repping the UK-side of techno, leading the lines with the wonky, off-kilter electro-acid cut named "Steel Sky", while label regular Conan comes through with an insanely lo-fi techno cut called "Neptune Racing" that feels like it was made in the basement of a sweaty Chicago studio circa 1989. On the flip, 214, who is another familiar face, drops an aerial attack in the form of a paranoid, brooding artillery of glitchy electro by the name of "Deep Ellum", whereas VC-118A's relatively more placid "Face The Waves" delves into a much deeper and floaty downtempo mode for the early, early sets...

  3. Fluid
  4. Cold Sweat (Ekman remix)
  5. Cold Sweat (Orgue Electronique remix)
Review: Eeked out late last year on a test press, this immaculate bouquet of poppish French electro gets a full release. It's the first time Jauzas The Shining has appeared on LKT since his 2013 "Nuclear Invasion", and this time he's brought reflective poet Victoria Lukas along for the ride. While both "Cold Sweat" and "Coral Eyes" are sinister lullabies, "Fluid" is a much darker, dancefloor aimed original with heavily textured synth leads. The dancefloor focus is retained on the remixes as Ekman digs out a witchy brew of foggy techno and Orgue Electronique looks to Detroit and early UR for inspiration on his crystalline tech blend.

  1. JTC - "In Transit"
  2. Gosub - "Blue In Black"
  3. Sync 24 & Defekt - "Pulse Effect"
  4. Versalife - "Ionization"
Review: James T. Cotton, Gosub and Versalife all feature on the third and penultimate instalment of Cultivated Electronics' World Electronix series. Established last summer, the series allowed the London based Cultivated Electronics the chance to champion contemporary electro from an international cast, with The Exaltics, prolific Finnish producers Morphology and Abstract Forms label chief Deixis included on the previous two volumes. This 12" is by far the most high profile however, with Nation alumnus James T Cotton turning in a tough analogue dreamer "In Transit" under the recently shorn down JTC banner, continuing the form shown on full EPs for Killekill, Hoya Hoya and newcomers Ansatz this year. Alongside this are contributions from Boris Bunnik's Versalife project, the Miami-based Shad T. Scott aka Gosub, and a collaboration between CE label head Sync 24 and Dublin based electro producer DeFeKT.

  3. Vault - "Unknown Victim" (instrumental) (7:26)
  4. Synkronized - "Coma Jam" (3:58)
Review: Given that every release to date has been a winner, we're expecting big things from the latest volume in Snuff Trax's electro-focused In The Dark Again series. Predictably, there's not a weak link in sight. We're particularly enjoying the spacey electronics, woozy melody lines, snappy drum machine hits and warehouse-friendly intent of Kaspar's "Deleite Obscuro. That said, Lectromagnetique's punchy, TB-303 electro floor filler, "The Abyss", is also superb and arguably the most floor-friendly cut of the lot. Elsewhere, Vault drops a chunk of revivalist Italo-disco dustiness and Synkronized goes all weird, spacey and distorted on the equally as inspired "Coma Jam".

  4. Bakunin Commando - "Kill Your Braincop" (5:26)
Review: Snuff Trax's In The Dark Again off-shoot has been gaining all sorts of praise recently, and that's because the label provides us with exactly the right kind of electro - raw, diverse strains of vintage industrialism for the modern listener (and dancer!). This is the label's sixth outing, and we have four tunes by four emerging talents: Le Chocolat Noir provides a bit of neo-romanticism on the Coexistence mix of "Never Let Go", while Vault's "Freedom Of Choice" makes for one of the most sinister acid experiments we've heard all year. The same artist shreds that sleek elegance to pieces on the rough and cavernous EBM tune "XXIX", leaving "Kill Your Braincop" by Bakunin Commando to fester in a murky pool of echoing sonics, delayed voices and a foreboding harmonic arrangement. Solid stuff.

  4. VCS2600 - "Modular Deivce" (4:29)
Review: The tenth missive on Vortex Traks is full to bursting with tasty treats. As with many of the Berlin-based imprint's previous outings, it's a multi-artist affair. Marshall Applewhite kicks things off via the deep electro/dusty IDM fusion of "Better Do Not", where eight-bit electronics and undulating acid-style motifs rise above a crunchy beat, before Forehard attempts to batter dancefloors into submission via the full-throttle, Klakson-style Rotterdam electro filth of "Rhythm Device". Das Ding invites us to party in deep space via the high-tempo beats and swirling, some would say psychedelic electronics of "Analog Devices", before VCS2600 serves up some seriously punchy, acid-fired electro ("Modular Device").

Review: Gird yourselves; starting from this month and running through until December, Dutch institution Dekmantel are celebrating a decade in the game with a series of monthly 12"s featuring a seriously all-star cast from Tony Allen to Villalobos. It starts right here as legendary innovative composer Gigi Masin opens with the lilting, delicate "Maja", Vakula brings us down from the clouds and back to the future with the body-jacking ghetto bump of "Robot Fuck The System" while Flugel blows the finale horn with the swampy Amazonian harmonic trip-out "Mice On Stick". This is the start of something very special.

Review: Happily, Neo Violence's third label sampler contains some real gems. It begins with Niro's "Nazca", a distinctively spacey affair that brings together echoing, dub techno style synthesizer motifs, shuffling tech-house drums and chords seemingly beamed down from another galaxy. VNZO's woozy "Relax Yourself" continues the fusion vibe (think ultra-deep Motor City techno mixed with dusty deep house), before NMSS and Jjuan pepper a cowbell-laden broken house groove with swirling chords and late '80s hip-house vocal samples. Another rock solid EP is drawn to a close via the rubbery, post-electro rhythms, darting bass and dreamy pads of Zolaa's standout "Fao-Mao".

Review: To complement Objekt's masterful 36-track session for their irregular Kern mix series, Tresor have put out two self-explanatory 12" samplers. Kern Vol. 3: The Exclusives sees contributions from accomplished electro technicians Clatterbox and Polzer as well as Bristol's rising Shanti Celeste and Via App of 1080p fame. "Aspect Ratio" from Clatterbox and Celeste's understandably incandescent "Lights" both feature in a movement on the mix that is a real highlight of Kern Vol. 3, but DJs will be happy both have been pressed her for full club play. On the B-side, the swift and snappy metallic tunnelling of Polzer's "Static Rectifier" could be mistaken for an angry DJ Stingray, whilst Via App's "From Across The Room (Edit)" is a more playful, if pensive affair.

  2. Fame (The Wee DJs remix)
  3. Fame (Volum remix)
  4. Fame (Bass Kittens remix)
Review: Following the success of the masterfully selected series of 4 volumes - "Over The Counter Culture" - this one off special features four remixes of the 80s pop classic 'Fame' and was inspired by the much sought after 'Wee Killed Him EP' by The Wee DJs, released in 1999 on SCSI AV, which featured it's very own 'Fame' remix. This latest EP is made up of remixes by Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow), Bass Kittens, Volum and a new updated mix by The Wee DJs. These four interpretations bring deep nasty basslines and beats to smash dance floors worldwide and show 'Fame' at its darkest. With the A side ranging from Silicon Scally's stylistic sound, which brings a determined and involving electro mix, to The Wee DJs broken, dark melodic bass filled second version of this classic track. The B side continues the theme with Volum's own solid, floor driven, twisted and glitchy take and finally Bass Kittens brings his cheeky 808 San Francisco breaks sound smashing in to end this EP with a bang.

  1. Treasure Seeking (original version)
  2. Treasure Seeking (130 bpm version)
  3. Treasure Seeking (Diep version)
Review: Away from her more austere techno output, Steffi can known to be a big lover of unabashed party-time electro, and it doesn't get more exuberant and catchy than this collaboration with Dexter and Virginia in a departure from most of the output you'll find on Ostgut-Ton. "Treasure Seeking" is a craftily penned crossover cut with as much pop nous as underground clout, with Dexter's squelchy sound-design looming over the mix. The 130 BPM version gets a little more of that Detroit electro style looming over proceedings, while Diep delivers a straight-talking Motor City techno version loaded with plush string synths and stacks of energy.

Review: While Steffi and Virginia have been working together on and off for the best part of a decade, "Work A Change" is undoubtedly their most significant collaborative work to date (both in terms of its expansive nature and the quality of music on show). With Virginia handling singing duties throughout, "Work A Change" rides on waves of tasty electro grooves and hazy synth-pop motifs and futuristic electronics. It's a blueprint that guarantees goodness throughout, from the quietly euphoric shuffle of opener "Be True To Me" and the pulsating dancefloor fizz of "Help Me Understand" (one of two cuts showcased in both vocal and instrumental forms), to the high-tempo thrust of "Until You're Begging", the bass-heavy, future dancehall wonkiness of "Internal Bleeding" and triumphantly intergalactic title track.

  1. Tranportation Aad - "Pagoda"
  2. Grey Goo - "Lost Transmissions"
  3. Vaalhaala - "Phaethon"
  4. Grey Goo - "See Me"
Review: The second of two 12" singles this week from Darkestral Recordings sees Instra:mental's Al Green further explore his new Transportation AAD alias, a collaboration with Darkestral label head Drkstr. In "Pagoda", the pair compose a particularly atmospheric interlude which utilises Eastern tones and booming drums to create a soundscape worthy of a noir tinged sci-fi movie. The single also features more contributions from Green under another new guise, Grey Goo. Less obviously dancefloor focused, the cavernous sonics and brooding atmospherics of "Lost Transmissions" recalls the introspective dub experimentation of Blackest Ever Black's Raime, while "See Me" fuses this aesthetic to some drawn out chords and sharply programmed 808 drums. The final contribution comes from the mysterious Vaalhaala, who employs a pulsing arpeggio which sounds like it has come from a far off satellite transmission, with sounds that threaten to explode at any moment. Sounding like nothing else this year, this EP is a perfect hybrid of futuristic bass and bleak moods, and will be essential for anyone interested in where the genre can go next.
