  2. Black Puppet
Review: Dat Pressure keep digging back into the archives of main man Noodles with some of the highly sought after heat that has been fetching silly money on the second hand market. When it comes to the darker end of the garage spectrum, some of these jams are right up there with the best and so getting a chance to lay your hands on a stone cold jam like "99" is a dream come true for any true 2-step head. Beats and bass just don't come sicker than this. "Black Puppet" meanwhile lays down the law as far as wobble bass goes, proving just how pioneering Noodles was with his work as Groove Chronicles.

Review: Three releases deep, each one an absolute peach: Youngsta's Sentry label has been total fire so far. Kicking off with dBridge, then Nomine, now the label take us to New Zealand for its third outing as Akcept takes the controls and proceeds to drive on both sides of the road; "Dreader Than Dread" is an epic bounce back 10 years with its brazenly funk horns and rolling chubby bass groove while "Howl" is a lot more spaced out, starker, late night jam with a fatty sub line that should come with a health warning. Stay alert.

Review: Brand new label from House Of Wax: Jupiter's Moon touch down with two highly sought-after rubs from the touchingly talented Djrum. Taking two meditative system smokers from London nine-piece The Drop, Djrum flexes in two distinct ways; "Looking To The Sky" gets an upbeat two-step twist that's not dissimilar to old Kromestar joints while "Takeover" wallows much deeper in the dubwise aesthetics as a slinkier two-step riddim bubbles beneath a much heavier bed of textures, pads and mbira. On dub since 2011 and still smouldering to this day, these are vinyl only and not likely to hang around. You know what to do.

Review: Limbo Tapes founder and all-round Bristol bass G, Titus 12 returns to ZamZam with this powerful vinyl-only 45". "Summon Luxo" builds around a spaciously phrased beat and layers of humanised elements, gradually developing weight and momentum with drum movement and more vocal elements guiding the hook. "Silly Youth" is a much more direct piece of skankage laced with melodica, guttural vocals and a bouncy bassline that gnarls and twists in all the right places. Only 600 of these are being pressed.

Review: It's time to step into the Bristol shadows with Sector 7 once again as label co-runner Boofy invites Young Echo to the fray for two instrumental grime / dub hybrids. "Roll The Dice" pelvises with its dense subs and shimmering atmospheric textures while shattering trap snare roll and a mystic melody and skippy drum arrangement flicker in and out of the foreground. "Cane Sword" is a little more on the pure grime tip with some superb drum momentum, breathless atmospheres and cool samples that skid to a halt when you least expect them. Roll again...

  3. Come Down To Us
Review: After a decidedly silent 2013 Burial is back on Hyperdub with a new single that points to pastures new for the stealthy producer. "Rival Dealer" is sure to polarize opinion as it takes a positively unexpected route into hardcore breaks, static interference, all manner of oddball speech samples, diversions and switches in dynamics, and a willfully grainy production finish that borders on punk. Depending on where you choose to dive into the ten-minute track the experience could be very different; experiencing it in full is nothing short of a rollercoaster. "Hiders" too is full of surprises, more indebted to pop balladry than anything remotely garage related, and the emotive croon and swooning piano is only magnified by a Yazoo-esque drum stomp at the midway point. "Come Down To Us" is equally heartfelt, all slow release vocals and languid chords yet constantly fractured at the edges, with yet more surprising turns of bombast waiting in the wings over thirteen minutes.

Review: Who says smoking stunts your growth? Look at Smoking Sessions; 10 years in the game and never been bigger. Inhabiting that fertile axis between dub, garage, electronica and dubstep, its roster features some of the most innovative names in bass music such as Djrum, Geode, Synkro. Here we hit some selected cuts from the full 14-track anniversary album. Ranging from beautiful new moments such as Geode's mystic string-melting stepper "Ishikari" to out-and-out cult label anthems such as Synkro's perennial "Don't Know" and Djrum's measured and meditative "Plead With Me", this immaculate double 12" represents the label's distinctive and striking remit and sets us up for the next 10 smoky years. Review: As you'd perhaps expect, the second part (or "plate") of Artikal's The Architects Volume 1 compilation is full of deep and weighty treats. Fittingly, label boss J:Kenzo steps up first, offering Resound the chance to turn "Intallek" into a crunchy, snare-heavy revivalist jungle treat. TMSV take an altogether deeper route on "Sprite", peppering a tribal dubstep rhythm and moody sub-bass line with clandestine electronics and foreboding effects, before Compa slows things down via the melancholic bass science of "Lampin". Arguably best of all, though, is Argo's pleasingly melodious deep dubstep roller "That Fresh", which fittingly rounds off a fine EP.

Review: Happy days are here again... Bristol's Titus 12 makes his debut on the ever-bountiful Gourmet Beats, and he's doing it with such as positive, spiritual bounce he can even make regicide seem like a joyous topic. Seriously, check that spring and organic punch of "Kill The King" and try telling us murderation ain't sweet. It's not going to happen. "Drifter Dub" takes us down even dustier Kingston lanes as it twists up a mystic lead with a rootsical warm popping bass groove while the title track "Happy Friday" is a soaking wet dreamcake with slaps, bubbles and cascading droplets of rich skank soul dripping throughout. Happy? Ecstatic more like mate.

Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

Review: For this debut release, the Munich-based crew behind Fayah Chords has turned to two experienced vocal talents: South African dancehall mic man Crosby and veteran toaster Longfingah. Crosby delivers a trademark vocal on the skittish but soulful, reggae-influenced dubstep pressure of "Bad Mind Character", which was produced by Fayah Chords crewmembers Ruffftec [sic] and Thebanktella. It's accompanied by two jaunty digital reggae reworks by Violbwoy and Blue Hill respectively. Ruffftec returns to the controls on Longfingah's cheery, breezy and soulful dubstep bumper "Caught Inna Dem System". In this instance, the killer remix comes from Phantom Warrior, who weighs in with an interpretation that looks to ragga-fuelled drum & bass for inspiration.

This follows up last month's wicked Topper Top EP and it's more of the same street level, low end theories once again. Starting out with the wonky, thumping, horns-led stomp of the title track, there's more quality on offer with "Jah Man" and its proper low end snarl, supported by hypnotic chime pads. On the flip, get ready for the straight up and bouncy grime stylings of "Computer Sound" serving up some late night pirate radio vibes for sure.

Review: Apollo's recent retrospective of Synkro's early work, a must-have double-disc set entitled Memories: 2008-2011, was a fine reminder of the genre-defying brilliance of the producer's formative releases. This 12" gathers together a slew of tracks from that set, most of which are either hard-to-find or previously unreleased. Highlights include the rumbling bass, skipping post-dubstep garage beats and dreamy vocals of "Everybody Knows", the drowsy, late night wonder of "Presence", the ambient two-step bliss of "Frontline" - still one of the producer's most breathtaking moments - and the weighty, late night paranoia of "Synthetic".

Review: With the label's 50th release celebrations done and dusted, Osiris Music begins a new chapter. They're keeping quiet about the identity of the producer behind The Things They Left Behind, though the smart money's on it being another alias of boss man Simon Shreeve (who released a track under the title as Kryptic Minds some years back). "Life Through Sepia" is quietly creepy and hugely atmospheric, with meandering spoken word samples, horror movie chords and poignant strings rising above a deep and bass-heavy dubstep groove. The freshly baked late night vibes continue on the flip, where "68" offers an attractive and dubbed-out fusion of skunk-infected beats, clandestine noises and contemplative electronic melodies.

Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Reflecting his paradigm shift since 2011's Doin It Again, this is Skepta at the very peak of his game. The successful singles are all present and correct as are serious cameos from the like of Pharrell (the stripped back and funky "Numbers"), Novelist (the gritty freestyle-firing "Lyrics") and Wiley & Chip on the sense-blurring "Corn On The Curb". With co-production and cameos from his BBK compadre and brother JME, Skepta's stayed true to his foundations with every bar. Next level.

Eight excursions in street level, post grime/dubstep bass mutations. We particularly enjoyed the smoked out beats of the title track, the forceful and jagged antics of "Your Love" (featuring some particularly thrilling low end pulsation) and the deconstructed jazzy drum and bass of "Feel Me". "Space Horror" bundles us into the boot of a rusty old rocket and speeds down the backstreets of Omicron Persei 8 where the drums slouch along the slimy alleys and bassline groan and fall out of dark corners. "Walk On Lava" sees us being chucked out of the spaceship from a great height into the eye of a volcano. With blistering kicks and a tense acid line, will we make it out on time or will our geese get cooked? There's only way to find out...

Review: There's no one iller than Danny Scrilla... Fresh from his debut album and Sam Binga collab on Cosmic Bridge, the German spell-binder makes his debut on Amit's AMAR with four bendy beat fusions. "All Thumbs" is the sound of melting music boxes flickering and burning in 808 flames, "Maelstrom" takes us much deeper into Danny's tubular bass universe and "Quasar" folds up a piece of jazz into tiny pieces before throwing it up into the air and letting it unfold like some type of dreamy parachute. Finally we climax with the swaggering data-drenched swagger jam "BFG900", a freaky world where Roald Dahl's much loved giant and the Terminator make great bedfellows.

"Realise" features the smoky, purring tones of Rider Shafique who calls for unity over paranoid dynamics and shattered rim shots. Most commonly spotted around the 160 mark with the likes of Sam Binga, Rider's control at 140 is just as strong, as anyone who's familiar with Ishan Sound will already know. "Bayside Shakedown" taps into Karnage's eastern roots with its processed rising percussion before dropping into organs straight out of a zombie b-movie. Incredible scenes.

The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Kromestar's Ricky Kalsi has been teasing us with his experimental grime project Iron Soul for some time now but hasn't released anywhere near as much as we'd like him to. Fizzing with a funky, carefree melting pot nature, here he consolidates his limited 12s with fresh cuts that exploring the most cosmic, funky and euphoric corners of grime beats. The whole album is a trip that jets you round places you didn't know existed; the tropical star-gazing romanticism of "Me X You", the raw funky purple power of "E-Motion", the sensual G-business of "Lost Memories", the list of Iron Soul's musical achievements and vision grows by the 16. Don't sleep on these.

Review: Truth's triple-D rollcall develops again with the unique sounds of Sepia. Since emerging on Gourmet, he's pushed all the right deep buttons on White Peach and Infernal. Here we find him on some of his darkest and most captivating touches so far as he builds on the Deep Dark & Dangerous signature; on the weightier side "Sakura" has a richter-rocking grumble of a bassline and "Point Blank" pings and ricochets with a cosmic two-step while on the more introspective side "Eclipse" flutters and twinkles over a sludgy subby bass and "Regret" yearns and mourns with subtle chords and lashings of dubspace and lingering percussion. Quintessential DDD.

  2. VGB - "Rough Surface" (4:40)
Review: More tripped out, line-blurring bass exercises from Well Rounded as they re-up their WRDubs series. Freshman T.A.R takes the lead with a freaky follow up to his killer "Amplivagant" debut on Rarefied earlier this year. Keep your focus on those bulbous rolling bassline and weirded rhythmic clicks as a wave of telecommunication oddness crashes into the scene with sense-mashing effect. FKOF alumni VGB takes over the B with "Rough Surface", a much more spaced out affair with warped chords and purring bassline. Limited and dangerous.

  6. Macabre Unit - "Neurotik" (3:45)
Review: Professor Nomine unleashes the third instalment of his new label and he's rolling in good company as Macabre Unit and Japanese grime MC Duff join him for the late night ride. Nomine's rhythms buzz with rolling energy - the electric waspy bass on "Grimy Tribe", the tripped reverse beats of "Game Over", the stark vocal rhythm of Duff on "World Of G". Macabre Unit takes us deeper into the swamp with the palpitating kicks of "Sound Boy" before getting all space-funk on "Red Stripe Riddim" and totally flipping the script on the squelched out bass twists of "Neurotik". Some truly futuristic stuff happening here...

Review: Following their razor edge four-tracker earlier this summer Rinse co-founder and foundation grime pioneer Slimzee and new partner in crime As.If.Kid maintain the heat as they declare "Judgement Day" once and for all. Bell-chiming brutality with a rugged slo-mo jungle charm, there's almost a rock-like looseness to the drums and grunting bass as it rolls out with unique energy. Flip for a remix from fellow OG DJ Garna who reinforces As.If.Kid's "Shooter" with an authentic jungle rinse-out.

Review: The latest ultra-limited release from Berlin's Through The Speakers collective comes from NGHT DRPS, a previously unheralded producer who hates vowels but loves big basslines. The four tracks showcased on his debut EP draw influence from across the bass music spectrum - think dubstep, UK funky, dub, kuduro, experimental D&B and even shangan rhythms - while offering some fresh, hybrid sounds. Perhaps the EP's greatest strength, though, lies in the subtlety and balance of NGHT DRPS's production, which sits somewhere between the sparse, stripped-back feel of UK grime and the more polished, fleshed-out feel of European house and techno.

Review: Manchester bass-smith Compa takes control once again and launches his very own CPA imprint. Launching with demonstrative low-end clarity, both "No Hype" and "In Check" swagger with his signature trap/grime fusion. The former is a straight knock out thanks to some devil-dealing production and venom bars from General Footsie while the latter is a more brooding, dangerous construction laced with subtle orchestra drama. Only 500 of these have been pressed and Compa promises this will never see vinyl justice again. You know what to do.

Review: For much of his career, publicity-shy producer Tremble has operated on Osiris offshoot Ruff Cut. Here he goes it alone on freshly minted imprint Safari Art, in the process delivering a trio of atmospheric, floor-friendly dusbtep workouts. The title track sets the tone, with spine-chilling audio textures and echo-laden rasta-man vocal snippets enveloping a deep sub bassline and rolling, hot-stepping beats. Flip for "Dedicated", a more straightforward chunk of tribal-infused dubstep science, and the percussively layered heaviness that is peak-time cut "Unite". Like the other tracks on the EP, it combines the producer's usual deep and creepy vibe with some seriously soulful reggae vocal samples.

  3. Rebar
Review: He's back! Toasty, one of foundation dubstep's original contributors, returns to the bass game via the ever-evolving, ever-on-point Circadian Rhythms crew's fledgling label. "Metal" takes us right back to the coal face; steel foundry beats clanging spaciously while wafting flutes subvert the industriality of it all with a sense of murked tropicana. "Rebar" is a flex back to the early 2000s when UKG, breakbeat, grime and dubstep were all bouncing off each other where hammering breaks and a droning bass that oozes over the edges promise to cause serious damage. Finally "Bump" provides uplift and happy endings as dreamy synths soar and skippy beats swagger and stagger. Welcome back Toasty.
