Benga - "Transformers"
Kutz - "Shake It"
Review: Oi Benga! "Transformers" is a bit rowdy! Dutch label Oi! Recordings launch their vinyl arm with a statement of intent, securing the Magnetic Man's preferred set ender. You can keep your wet blanket post dubstep with pitch shifted R&B chanteuse vocal samples, "Transformers" is all about the WMD levels of bass menace that run through the post apocalyptic half step rattle - in the Croydon don's own words it sounds horrible when he plays it out! On the flip, fellow Londoner Kutz steps up to the challenge with the equal screw face thump of "Shake It". Nice work Oi Recs.

Fallow & Alex Compton - "String Assassin" (3:49)
Kaido - "Kennedy Bridge" (4:27)
Zha - "Without" (3:47)
Nakes - "Moksha" (4:02)
Review: White Peach's admirable Peach Bits series, which draws together previously unreleased gems from the label's growing roster of artists, has reached its fifth volume. While previous volumes have largely aimed squarely at the dancefloor, this edition is more eclectic in outlook. Compare, for example, the paranoid, exotic darkness of Kaido's deep dubstep rattler "Kennedy Bridge" and the Eastern mysticism - via the Spanish Riviera - of Zha's "Without", which pairs gentle dubstep rhythms with lilting Japanese melody lines and flamenco guitar flourishes. Or, for that matter, the drowsy, post-rock-meets-dubstep haze of Fallow and Alex Compton's "String Assassin", and the blissfully exotic, almost Balearic melodies of Nakes' thrillingly positive dubstep shuffler "Moksha".

Jigsaw (dub)
Runaway (version)
Review: Vinyl only vibes... Following the huge success of the agenda setting "Warehouse Dub" come two more horse power productions from two of the brightest sparks in the deep dubstep game. "Jigsaw" rattles with a nagging sub thump before breaking into a barely recognisable sample (King Tubby if we're not mistaken) then letting rip with an hot-stepping jungle finale. "Run" is equally dashing; bringing Eek-A-Mouse's "Runaway" right up to date with bucket loads of bottom end and a thundering end. Game changers, nothing less.

Electro Magnetic Destroyer
Propaine
Review: Deep Medi Musik introduce K Man with the machine-gunning Electro Magnetic Destroyer EP. In terms of sub-bass and gnarly musicality it rates up there with recent 12"s from familiar artists like Goth-Trad, Mala, Commodo and Kahn. The title-cut is an industrial-tinged and deep dubstep melee of warbly basslines, growling synths and beefy drums all wrapped up in a sinister rhythm. Then there's "Propaine", the perfect weapon to wake up the neighbours, and even though its groove is broken, it remains fluid and very duurty.

K Man - "PWM" (5:31)
Kadet P - "Alcaravan" (5:09)
Review: Brand new label from Kadet P but you need to act fast... Only 150 of these puppies have been pressed and there's no promise of a repress. Deep Medi affiliate K Man ghosts on the A-side with all his phantom charm as "PWM" staggers and daggers between two crisp bass textures, both rising in urgency and groove throughout. Kadet takes the B with a deep-dreamy sub weave that's hazy and psychedelic one minute and tripped out beyond reality the next. This is how you do a label launch.

Dread (Dubkasm dub 2) (4:24)
Dread (Dubkasm dub 3) (4:17)
Dread (Dubkasm dub 4) (4:22)
Review: Deep Medi Musik continues to be the leader of the deep dubstep sound after many years in the game. Kahn is now back on the label with new versions of "Dread" which was an absolute stone cold classic way back in 2012. The originally restrained and atmospheric track gets some much-celebrated Dubkasm treatment here and the results are then pressed to limited white label vinyl for the first time. All four versions bring the goodness despite them being heavier takes on the OG with plenty of fresh, fine warrior leads and effects added to the mix.

Thief In The Law
Review: Originally released last month, demand is high for this brutal bass double up from this Bristol partnership. "Chevy" takes grime to its furthest, most turbo-charged extremities. Steppy, snappy and full of switches, it's a breakbeat monster that continually serves up surprises, including some fantastically dramatic vocal samples. "Thief In The Law" takes the halfstep template and gives it a trippy reboot. Moaning mid-range bass tones and yet more distinctive samples are the order of the day, allowing your floor to truly lose themselves. Quintessential West Country heaviness.

Backcha (3:58)
Dubchat (2:54)
Review: **ESSENTIAL HOTLINE REPRESS** Hotline Recordings launch with an incendiary take on grime and dancehall from Bristol duo Kahn and Neek. The new imprint is clearly in thrall to the glory days of rave - until recently the only information about their first release was a breathy voicemail recording accessed by dialling a number on the Hotline website. "Backchat" is pure fire, with smacking drum hits and a "badman" vocal deftly manipulated throughout the track's duration. "Dubchat" on the flip does what all good versions should, stripping down the elements to the bare essentials and dipping them in a vat of reverb. This is Kahn and Neek's third joint release, following the Flow Dan sampling beast "Percy", released on Bandulu Records earlier this year, and dub reggae cut "Find Jah Way", produced under their Gorgon Sound moniker for Peng Sound: we're hoping the pair have plenty more to offer in 2013.

(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss
Random Lab
Shimmer
Venus
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

Armed & Dangerous

Armed & Dangerous (4:11)
Damascus (4:44)
Review: Following the recent release of their rather fine FabricLive mix, Bristol bass-heads Kahn & Neek (AKA Young Echo sorts Joe McGann and Sam Barrett) return home to Bandulu Records. "Armed & Dangerous" is a formidably floor-friendly affair, wth tumbling synthesizer motifs making way for mind-altering sub bass, snappy drum machine rhythms, and booming dub vocal samples. Flipside "Damascus" sees the duo move further towards grime, with eight-bit electronics, pulsing sub and fizzing drum rhythms underpinning a subtly darker groove. It's very good, of course, but arguably lacks a little of the cheery fizz of the superb "Armed & Dangerous".

Clang
Review: Osiris Music regulars Kaiju step up for their fifth release on the long running label overseen by Kryptic Minds, with MI6 the final release of the year for Jamie Schildhauer & Paul White closing proceedings on what's been a triumphant 12 months for the pair. Fans of Kaiju will no doubt be able to trace the lineage of the two tracks present here all the way back to the production duo's guest mix on Youngsta's Rinse FM show with both "M16" and "Clang" causing serious club damage in the ensuing months. With such rigorous road-tests completed, the general public are now able to get their mitts on the ultra militant sonic warfare of the title cut and it's sleek yet equally heat treated B Side. Proper business as usual from the Kaiju crew!

Jam Maker
Review: Limited, hand-stamped and delivered in a paper bag: everything about this deep dub doublet from Kaiju screams authenticity. "Natty Dub" is traditional soundsystem music with bold, warm subs and textured overlays and a sweet enveloping riddim. "Jam Maker" follows suits with a similarly faithful fusion that carries one or two of the dubstep techniques to ensure its delivery is felt with contemporary impact. Another exciting Osiris off-shoot, this is impeccable.

Snagglepuss
Review: Two important things to note here. One: Kaiju's 12"s sell out on the regular, and Osiris seldom repress. Two: Flowdan is on mic duties. With such a distinctive tone and menacing lyrical style, his flow suits Kaiju's liquid, slime-like sonics so well, they were made for each other. Flip for the more spacious, eerie soundscapes of "Snagglepuss". Cute title, dark groove. Kaiju are on fine form right now.

Review: Deep Medi murkers Kaiju return to Mala's label with another bulldozer EP - 'Troll'. The title track sets the tone and mood with its raw, curmudgeonly mid 2000s style groove. Elsewhere 'Counter It' looks more towards the club sound with its rifle-like kicks weaving a steppy storm beneath the tense, oppressive atmospheres before 'The Terrible' closes the EP with some incredibly unique and stark bass textures. DO feed the troll.

Flee In The Fog (feat Dubtro) (4:32)
Review: Japanese dub stepper Karma resurfaces on Innamind with a deadly 12" exercise in bass science; welcome news for anyone that caught his previous contributions to Vivek's System label and that Back To Chill compilation from Goth Trad. The Heal 12" sees Karma dip into his personal armoury of dubplate weapons for a triplet of deadly cuts with Innamind welcome recipients. Dread vibes run deep through the title track which features some mind-bending sub bass deployment - we gotta hear this one on a big rig!! "Rumblefish" crams all manner of abstract found sound into a taut, almost 4/4 rhythm with dystopian results whilst closer "Flee in The Fog" finds Karma working with Dubtro on a production where the space between elements is key to creating tension.

Vacant Mind (6:03)
Review: Dub-wise explorer Karma returns to Kursk's Innamind label, with his first release of any description since mid 2015. "Terrorist" is a seriously weighty concoction, with slick, soulful, echo-laden vocals riding a tough, soundsystem-friendly dub riddim, ricocheting effects and warm, mind-soothing sub-bass. Flipside "Cha" is an altogether different proposition, and sees Karma successfully return to his dubstep roots via dark and moody electronics, punchy drums, throbbing sub-bass, and just the right amount of brain-melting vocal stabs. The pitched-down, dub techno influenced haziness of "Vacant Mind" completes a fine package.

Mysticism (with Helktram) (5:10)
Review: Keeping it loose as we wade into a new year, Encrypted Audio ask Japan's Karnage back for more faraway jams. As with previous outings together, it's an enveloping sea of shades ranging from the woozily bent and cascading tones of "Leaper" that almost slime off the beats to the bleary flute loop that's mangled with precision levels of uplift on "Mysticism". In between we have the industrial strength "SOL" which sounds like a steel foundry melted into a waveform. Powerful.

Realise (feat Rider Shafique) (5:11)
Bayside Shakedown (4:15)
Review: Fresh from his Encrypted excursion earlier this year, Karnage returns with two more powerful packages of pure future. "Realise" features the smoky, purring tones of Rider Shafique who calls for unity over paranoid dynamics and shattered rim shots. Most commonly spotted around the 160 mark with the likes of Sam Binga, Rider's control at 140 is just as strong, as anyone who's familiar with Ishan Sound will already know. "Bayside Shakedown" taps into Karnage's eastern roots with its processed rising percussion before dropping into organs straight out of a zombie b-movie. Incredible scenes.
