Review: 3024's pilfering of West Country talent continues unabated with the rather busy of late Julio Bashmore being swiftly followed by the equally prolific Addison Groove in releasing essential club tackle for Martyn's imprint. Anyone who has indulged in Mr T Williams' recent output for Swamp81 or Tectonic will have an inkling of the current Addison Groove sonic flex, all tightly wound post circa 130bpm 808 patterns, though "It's Got Me" is truly characterised by the disparate sensation of woozy melodic flourishes being diced by the rhythmic swagger. Flipside you get future funk electro odyssey of "Minutes Of Funk" with swathes of purple textures allowed to breath beneath a perma bouncy bass thrust. The midway drop into a bumping house pattern will grab you every time!

Review: In between brief dalliances with Swamp81 and 3024, Addison Groove shows some hometown support with this essential twelve for Pinch's Tectonic imprint. "This Is It" could only come from the sonic palette of Tony Williams, with steppy juke heavy 808 riddims ripping out of the speaker cones at 138bpm amidst a barrage of expertly spliced vocals and rubbery rave bleeps. Amidst the rowdiness, there's a distinct progression to the track which makes it a worthy successor to last year's triumphant "Footcrab". "Make Um Bounce" slips down the tempo scale a notch or two for a more standard 4x4 flex that's brimming with enough bass and rasping percussion to find a place amidst Jackmaster's forthcoming excellent mix for Fabric. Big tip!

Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Review: Recently revisited by RSD on the Broken Beats album, Horace highlight "Cuss Cuss" gets two superb reworks from DJ Madd and TMSV. The former goes for a starker, more traditional dub vibe, allowing the original riff to play a lead role in the arrangement while the rich steppy beats drive the groove forward. TMSV flips for more of a traditional dubstep flavour with a more prominent halfstep and uglier bassline. Both versions are incredible. No cussing please...

Review: Detroit meet dubstep: dubstep, meet Detroit. Kyle Hall knocks down barriers on this release, bringing his free-flowing, insouciant production style to the UK bass music scene. After dropping a remix of Darkstar's "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer" in 2009, Hyperdub boss Kode9 called on Hall's precocious talents for a solo release on the imprint.
His brief production career has so far encompassed house, techno, jazz and now dubstep, although such parameters are fairly meaningless to a young producer for whom the internet, analogue equipment, high tech kit and software programming are all part of one wonderful, disjointed bundle for making and consuming music.
"Kaychunk" features soft melodic synths floating over the top of a schizophrenic drum pattern, while vocal snippets help give the track some structure. B-side "You Know What I Feel" is very much in the Floating Points school of dubstep, meandering gently along with no obvious destination - but of course the destination hardly matters, because the ride itself is so damn fun.
Make no mistake, Hall is a prodigious talent and with releases slated for labels as diverse and forward-thinking as Carl Craig's Planet E, Sheffield's iconic Warp and Instra:mental’s Non Plus, it's already obvious that the serious players are taking notice.

Review: Hamdi presents DUPLOC with two of his most sought-after dub plates on this sizzling new 12", plus a bonus vinyl-one cut. The 'Selecta' EP comes three years after his one and only other record and kicks off with the title track, a menacing low-slung buzzer. The drums make heavy rotations beneath a synth one that zips about with future energy. 'Immortal' then layers up another fat low-end oscillation and crisp hits while 'Peace' has a more prickly percussive vibe and suspensory feel topped with grime vocals. Three sound systems winners, for sure.

Review: Fledgling Polish imprint New Moon give compatriot Hatti Vatti the clear blue vinyl treatment, revisiting the producer's 2011 debut in fine style and enlisting the contrasting talents of Phaeleh and Indigo to remix "You". Featuring the vocals of Cian Finn, this was Hatti Vatti's breakthrough track and both producers retain core elements of the original whilst flushing their productions with signature studio touches. Afterglow regular Phaeleh calls shotgun with a stripped back revision of the original, all intricate clicking rhythms and misty swathes of swampy bass that lends the track a whole new moodiness. Equally different in tone is the treatment from Mindset Recordings boss Indigo, adopting a rhythmic poise around the 170bpm that certainly recalls the autonomic endeavours of D Bridge and company - unrivalled deepness on this one!

Review: Following last year's sudden reappearance on Trusik, Tony Williams (most commonly known these days as Addison Groove) has clearly rekindled his love for 140 music in a major way. Not only with brand new originals, but the re-launch of his hugely respected Transistor imprint. It's a fittingly delicious release to relaunch with, too... "Atijo" is a rolling techno-influenced jam with gritty analogue edges to the relentless bass while "Ina" follows the similar energy but with very subtle African folk samples and lilting piano vapour trails. Welcome back Headhunter!

Review: Finnish film composer Headrooms makes his debut on Dutch beat institution Groove College. Graduating with distinction, both cuts sparkle with dreamy, densely textured soul while slouching on beautifully slo-mo breakbeats. "Pillow Talk" is straight out the Nightmares On Wax playback; all emotional and string-laced. "Silly Chats" looks more towards the smokier trip-hop sound of the early 90s (think Cold Cut or very early Shadow) with the same great laidback effect. An immaculate debut.

Review: Following the last Night Slugs white label from Jam City, the label drop a second 12" in as many weeks, from Atlanta based producer Helix. Entitled "Drum Track", it does a good job of conveying the producer's two obsessions: old Grime and looping Berlin techno, utilising a furious 808-led rhythmic flex and rapid fire synth that switches itself up every eight bars. The flip features a vocal version from Grime MC Flirta D, who brings a touch of 2004 with rhymes that flow as fast as the beats. After a relatively fallow 2011, it still remains to be seen if this is the re-ignition of more regular transmissions from Night Slugs, but if they sign off now, they'd still end up having a better year than most of their imitators.

Review: Georgia producer Helix's "Stacks Riddim" has been burning a hole in people's expectations ever since a certain online streaming phenomenon posted the track last October. Helix has since dropped a rather worthy addition to the Night Slugs White Label series and those who indulged in the looping Berlin techno meets 8bar grime of "Drum Track" will be all over the lead production on this killer All Caps twelve. Described quite artfully as "Spastik" for the bass music cognoscenti, "Stacks Riddim" fizzes with unstoppable attitude and makes this an essential release alone. But wait, the B Side track "Honig" is just as good, launching into a grumbling slipstream of militant techno that threatens to become engulfed by the relentless waves of incandescence.
