(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss (reissue)
Cat: S7S 011R. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. (Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss (4:32)
  2. Random Lab (5:05)
  3. Shimmer (4:18)
  4. Venus (3:15)
Review: Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

  3. Bubbles (3:16)
  4. Ostrov (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio continues to fly the flag for the deepest end of the dubstep spectrum with more bowel evacuating sounds, this time from Teffa. He draws on a rich history of sound system culture to really test your bass bins and lay down some killer low end wobbles. "Advance" (feat Moss) is an eerie opener with devastating bass and only the most subtle of synth details to keep you locked in place. "Bubbles" is another standout with its playful bassline sure to get big reactions, then "Ostrov" is a slow motion stepper with computer game melodies and real futurism.

  1. Iskeletor - "Afromax" (1:52)
  2. Iskeletor - "Afromax" (Gantz Seytan remix) (3:53)
  3. Grup Ses - "Mimar" (Iskeletor remix) (1:49)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kerem Sevincli AKA Iskeletor, an Istanbul-based beat-maker and bass-loving experimentalist who last featured on Tektosag way back in 2013. His return to the imprint boasts a trio of tracks on one-side, with an attractive, etched illustration on the other. He begins with "Afromax", a two-minute flurry of chopped experimental hip-hop beats, mangled bicycle bell and nuts-and-bolts percussion and wonky, shape-shifting electronics. Gantz Seytan remixes, cannily emphasizing the wonkiness of the beats on an outer-space excursion that's near hallucinatory in its twisted, slow motion approach. To round things off, Sevincli offers up his rework of Grup Ses cut "Mimar", re-casting it as a dystopian, ever-changing experimental beatscape rich in redlined sounds and epileptic drumbeats.

Cat: TERRA 001. Rel: 03 Mar 20
  1. Altair (5:04)
  2. Laser Lords (5:06)
  3. King Of Style (5:09)
Review: Off to a firing start last year on the likes of Foundation Audio, FKOF, Crucial and 786, Portuguese darksmith 3WA has the honour of launching Earth & Stone, the new label from Subtle FM's Chalcraft. Taking off where the likes of "Viagem" and "Black Marsh" left us, the "Altair" EP is awash with spooky harmonics and eerie, creeped out textures and trippy off-beat drum patterns. The title track sets the parameters with its folding tubular bass that shoots up an octave or three when you least expect it, "Laser Lords" follows with a stern lesson in percussive persuasion wrapped up in a raffish Coki style bassline before "King Of Style" signs the deal off with a swaggering groove and techno attitude. 3WA? 3WOAH mate.

Cat: SYSTM 025. Rel: 10 Apr 19
  1. Amphibious (3:46)
  2. Lucid Dreams (5:07)
Review: Fresh Sector 7, Bristol's Drone makes his debut on V.I.V.E.K's System Sound with two smoking slabs of bass weight. "Amphibious" funks up the radar for a bleep excursion through the swampiest of textures with only a trippy riser and noir spoken word. Flip for "Lucid Dreams" where things take a creepier undertone thanks to the cavernous space, waterdrops, roomy switchy kicks, pranged out reverse manoeuvres and a sub as thick as marmite. Immense.

Apatheia EP
Cat: TRSK 009. Rel: 04 Dec 19
  1. Eighteenhundred (15:51)
  2. Apatheia (6:52)
  3. East (7:53)
Review: German producer Bhed takes charge of the ninth EP on the vital Trusik label. His mastery of ambient, dub, techno depths and bass weight are all present and correct here, never more so than on the fantastic opener "Eighteenhundred". Taking up the whole of one side of wax, it is more than deserving of that indulgence as it slowly trips through floating pads, icy hi hats and supple rhythms that soothe the mind, body and soul. "Apatheia" is a more edgy track which is just as cavernous but has you looking over your shoulder, and closing cut "East" is a pure and dreamy dub beauty.

  1. Atijo (5:11)
  2. Ina (4:47)
Review: Following last year's sudden reappearance on Trusik, Tony Williams (most commonly known these days as Addison Groove) has clearly rekindled his love for 140 music in a major way. Not only with brand new originals, but the re-launch of his hugely respected Transistor imprint. It's a fittingly delicious release to relaunch with, too... "Atijo" is a rolling techno-influenced jam with gritty analogue edges to the relentless bass while "Ina" follows the similar energy but with very subtle African folk samples and lilting piano vapour trails. Welcome back Headhunter!

  4. Breakin (5:08)
Review: Last spotted on Artikal a little way back in December 2018 with the powerful "Systematic" EP, the deep trio LSN return to J:Kenzo's imprint with four more beguiling explorations. "AI" is loose, woozy and rolls with some fantastically off-grid breaks, "Spirit Dub" is a steppy odyssey waiting to crack heads while "Machine" is moody, muggy number with more loose kicks, wandering keytar leads and stacks for space for the space-bound vocals. Finally we hit the funkiest cut of the collection: "Breakin'". Dreamy, sleazy and guaranteed to take you to faraway places. Celebrate to automate.

Bad Trip (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: WHEELYDEALY 065. Rel: 22 Oct 19
  1. Bad Trip (4:41)
  2. Rolling Skies (4:41)
Review: It's been another banger of a year for Ricky Kalsi with a string of releases on his own Nebula imprint plus the likes of Dream Eater, Rotpot and Green King Cuts. Here he makes a very rare appearance on N-Type's Wheel & Deal with two more dark juggernauts. "Bad Trip" cracks open the heavens before the melted bassline oozes out and rains pure prang. "Rolling Skies" continues the theme of heavy weather as Kromey and the bossman go toe-to-toe in an intense game of militant funk. Bad to the bone.

Review: The ZX gunman returns! Here we find him filling in his signature space with vivid colours; Oriental scales cascade mesmerizingly across a series of synth textures, melodies and counter melodies while a stern bass hums with heavy voltage beneath. Kickless but kicking, it's another singular shot from the London shooter.

  3. Talk Crime (3:50)
Review: Following a whole run of releases on labels such as Encrypted, Version Collective and Deep Dark & Dangerous, Dutch darksmith Ramsez makes his debut on Jack Sparrow's Navy Cut. He does so with three stark blueprints; "Big Boi" backs up its badman title with a savage drill-like bassline and some of the wooziest beats he's crafted to date, "Swinger Club" gets a little sweary over deep space beats and a bassline that breathes while "Talk Crime" ends things on a pranged note as dissonant textures whip up deep mists and the bassline warps, melts and eventually combusts before your very ears. The only crime to talk of here would be to sleep on this...

Review: Giddy-up mate, Oxossi's back on the horse and he's trotting up a stink some place near you... If you're lucky to grab one of these 300 copies. "Blackhorse" takes the lead with some dark, gritty anxious rave moods before the organs, rumbling subs and weeping synth leads sweep you off to the heavens on "End Of Your Light". 1. Bluefoot (4:43)
  2. Choose Life (4:26)
Review: Since 2015, deep dubstep explorer Corin Bornoff AKA Karma has put out one EP a year. This year's was delayed, it seems, but it has finally appeared - just as 2018 is wheezing its' last, scarlet-faced breath. Opener "Bluefoot" was arguably worth the wait, though. Built around a skewed but still stepping, reggae-fired dubstep "ridim", the track shuffles along on a wave of hushed shakers, ultra-deep sub-bass and intergalactic dub-wise effects. Over on the flipside, "Choose Life" is surprisingly positive, with Bornoff wrapping ear-catching synthesizer melodies, alien electronics and UK steppas style bass around a punchy drum track.

  4. Worms (4:34)
Review: 3WA returns to Foundation Audio with a monsters stepper that will loosen your bowels thanks to its serious low end wobble. The opener is the chief example of that with its stuttering kicks and prickly hits all underpinned by a warm, wubbing undercurrent of lovely bass. 'Old Mount' has another bottomlessly deep low end and lithe, shiny synths bring to mind an urban metropolis late at night and 'Bloody Mess' then cuts loose muffled vocals and slapping hits overlaid with manic melodies straight from an early computer game soundtrack. Closer 'Worms' slows things down to a predatory crawl.

Review: Following massive cuts like 'Still Here' and 'Youtdem', Brizzle's Prizma and South London don Killa P link up once again for 'Bun Down'. Business as usual; swaggering, paranoid beats with stacks of space for Killa's instantly distinctive Jamaican flow. And if that doesn't set your aggy factor to max then jump on the remixes; Somah ups the tempo and weaves a little more eastern instrumentation between P's bars while Enigma Dubz gets busy on the harmonics with a walloping 2007-flavoured melting bass Q&A. Bun it!

Review: Fresh outa Glasgow, Creep Woland digs deep into the early jungle sounds. Think young J Majik, think Guy Called Gerald, "Medieval Draw" kicks off with icy pads and stop-start drums creating momentum, "Falkirk Triangle" plays more with harmonics as the bassline flips between layers of shade while "Imposter Syndrome" is a much creepier, tense affair with its harp strums and ominous bass tones and layered breaks. Finally "Lord Chamberlain" closes the show on an orchestral tip. Vibes with a touch of mourn. Perfect for these times.

Claustro (heavyweigjht vinyl 12")
Cat: HDB 120. Rel: 14 Jun 19
  1. Claustro (5:44)
  2. State Forest (7:53)
Review: While he's offered up the occasional remix, William "Burial" Bevan has been rather quiet of late. In fact, this two-tracker marks his first original material for almost two years. Lead cut "Claustro" is an unexpectedly up-tempo dancefloor affair - a sweet and sticky chunk of future-garage that sees Bevan wrap sugary female vocal snippets, spacey chords and bubbly analogue electronics around snappy two-step beats - drenched in vinyl crackle and tape hiss - and a rock solid bassline. It will raise a few eyebrows given his previous work but nevertheless sounds like a summer anthem in waiting. Bevan returns to familiar territory on flipside cut "State Forest", a ghostly, field recording-laden ambient excursion where pedal steel style motifs slowly rise above opaque electronics.

  2. Your Shed's Too Big (5:06)
Review: Boofy on System; we're surprised this hasn't happened sooner... But the wait has been worth it as we've got two powerful lessons in suspense, tension and low end drama. "Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place" sets the admonishing tone. Paranoid, foreboding and stripped back to the bare elements, it's the perfect pace setter. Flip for another excellently titled track as "Your Shed's Too Big" flips the focus on the rolling steppy percussion and wandering pipe arpeggio that skitters around the cut like a spider on ice. Get shedded.

  2. Cloud Chamber (4:59)
Review: After an eight year hiatus, London-based label No Comply are back. Ever eager to feature new talent, they turn to the talents of saxophonist Jake Marlow. His stellar performance across the two tracks here belies the fact of this being his vinyl debut. The comeback effort exists in the form of 'Cloud Chamber' a deep, dubby and jazzy experience, while evocative and sensual at the same time and venturing into chill territory. Dubstep juggernauts N-Type and Kromestar provide what the label best described themselves as "a high pressure, melodic remix." Limited to 300 copies worldwide, this unique collaboration is not to be slept on.

Review: We're not sure who Leftlow is/are but anything with the System stamp of approval passes all necessary filters. Especially when the lead track whisks you straight back to 2006 with the squelchiest hook this side of "Cluedub"'s dub dungeon and a sub grumpier than thunder. "Boa" is a little more contemporary in its minimal Rotterdam style. Strange, stripped back and sprung with a peculiar bounce that's as addictive as it is trippy, with its soft, subtle kick it's a genuinely unique piece of 140 craft. For good measure Skeptical swings by for a knock out remix of "Cluedub" where even more flabby low end gets baked in the mix. Don't get left out.

Review: Last spotted on Strictly 140's Overseas VA LP, Spanish new-gen bass chef serves up his biggest dish to date on Subaltern. Linking up with longstanding baron XL One for the opener, 'Cronauer'. Unhurried, twinkling but laced with a bitter bass bite, it sets the dark dream tone. 'Piranha Plant' and 'Dorsia' see Kodama going solo. The former is a woozy arpeggiated charmer that sits on the hip-hop side of the beat spectrum. The latter hums with similar melancholy but much more of an edge to the drums and that ominous waspy bass tone. Graveyard grooves.

Review: Burke returns with four more of his mysterious bass tunes on his own label. He is known for drawing on everything from trap to dubstep, grime to UK drill and does that again here with a real sense of intrigue and mystery. Opener "Cross The Line" sounds like Wu Tang Clan had they formed in London in 2020. "Detail" is a paranoid low end wobbler with high pressure bass, and "Harps & Home" gets more melodic and releases the pressure with some lush harp sounds. It's back to menacing darkness on closer "Craic Fiend", though, which keeps you locked with your head down.

  1. Crossing The Line (4:37)
  2. Send Out (4:37)
Review: Given the beat-making and production talents of Bristol boys Pinch and Khan, this hook-up with grime MCs Killa's Army - Killa P, Irah and Long Range - was never going to fail. Even so, "Crossing The Line" is insanely good; a future club anthem in which the three MCs get the hype going over a weighty, fuzz-fuelled beat that sits somewhere between grime, dancehall and dubstep. Killa (sorry) stuff. Pinch and Khan ditch the MCs on B-side workout "Send Out", instead peppering a moody bassline, clandestine aural textures and ricocheting vocal samples with gunshot snares, gut-punching sub tones and panicked electronics.

Review: LoDubs has been turning out delicious dub for nearly 15 years now, often as a bit of a lone ranger out on the west coast of America. One of its key prophets has been Vancouver's Daega Sound who has mapped the bass sound from dubstep into whatever it is called these days with real craft. Here he serves up two more compelling originals in "Gatekeeper" and "Second Strike". The former is filled with tension as the bass and hits lurch from one foot to the other and the latter is all manic loops and crashing hits. Kromestar closes out with a deadly remix that is more menacing than Mike Tyson in his prime.

  3. Bad From Mi Born (feat Rider Shafique - Eusebeia Truth & Rights remix) (4:45)
Review: Fresh from releasing the Birthmark and Eusebeia album, Bristol's Earthtrax returns with some old friends. Obeah is at the steering wheel once again, tagging in two exceptional MCs. Man like Trimetheus dissects the craft and graft of badmanism on the lead track; "Dead In This Ting" lives up to its name as his rifles out shots with clarity and venom. "Bad From Mi Born" sees him re-linking with Rider Shafique. Picking up where they left us on the label in 2018 with "Fix Up", it's another smoky, midnight stepper. And this time it comes courtesy of a classic jungle mix from Eusebeia. Get deaded.

Decadubs 1 EP
Cat: HDB 082. Rel: 22 May 14
  1. Mala - "Expected, Level 10"
  2. DVA - "Technical Difficulties"
  3. Kuedo - "Mtzpn"
  4. Kode9 - "Xingfu Lu" (Helix remix)
Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy Part 1: Deep
  1. Sepia - "Voodoo" (5:59)
  2. Taiko - "Rise" (4:25)
  3. Oxossi - "No War" (5:03)
  4. Shadow People - "Painted Red" (4:11)
Review: Truth's triple-D stable celebrate 60 releases with an epic release "Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy". This is the first of a series of EPs, it's focussed on the deepest tendrils of the label and it's just a sliver of the 29-track action. Sepia opens with a beautiful, heart-heaving lament "Voodoo" before Taiko lures us into the graveyard for some shadowy mischief on "Rise" before Oxossi gets aggy on the pipes and harmonica with "No War". Finally we see the return of Truth and Youngsta's Shadow People project as Lelijveld's hazy tones brings us to a cosy close on "Painted Red". Precision emotional sonics.

Diesel Not Petrol
Cat: DAKU 003. Rel: 18 Sep 20
  1. Diesel Not Petrol (Cimm remix) (4:24)
  2. Diesel Not Petrol (VIP) (3:17)
  3. Shutdown (Mystic State remix) (6:00)
Review: A decade of pure fossil fuel abuse; Sukh Knight's been revving our engines for years now and this seminal breakthrough cut is being celebrated with two inventive releases and the long sought-after VIP. Man of the moment Cimm adds a deeper twist, manipulating the previously staggered shot-like horns into more of a groove. Elsewhere, Mystic State flip the script entirely. Fresh from their recent debut D&B album 'My Own Private Island', they return to the 140 playground for a superb deep and hypnotic version that's more solar power than petrol or indeed diesel.
