Last Rites EP (double 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: ONEFLTD 004. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. Last Rites (4:15)
  2. Deep Six (4:57)
  3. Spooked (5:19)
  4. Melodrama (4:53)
Review: Perez reveals his shadowy 140 underbelly and once again knocks our heads clear off. Tapping back into that classic late 2000s deep space droney immersion vibe, each cut wounds with signature 1985 heaviness. "Last Rites" is all prang and high voltage bass fangs, "Deep Six" plunges us deep into the sub abyss, "Spooked" takes us for a slo-mo skank in the cemetery before "Melodrama" subverts dubstep's UKG influences in suitably swampy style. Rite on.

  3. Fittest OF The Fittest (5:26)
  4. Unity (7:24)
Review: New gen dubsmith Sabab is making a serious impression with his current slew of breakthrough Artikal releases. First came the crucial "Guidance" EP in November 2019, then came the equally essential "New Dawn" 12" in May 2020. Now, our heads fully turned and all eyes locked, comes another massive EP: "System Skank" takes us back to the original science while "Piercing White Light" is the late night bulldozer of the bunch. Meanwhile on the B: "Fittest Of The Fittest" flips between a big sample splash and the sizzliest bassline you'll find all month while "Unity" closes on a deep space dub voyage, skittering breaks breezing in the background and all. Fit.

Orders (12")
Cat: SEN 014. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. Boylan & Logos - "Orders" (4:13)
  2. Boylan, Slimzee & USF - "The Mould" (4:40)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Boylan landed on Youngsta's Sentry. A master of dark subby funk, usually found more around the grime and breaks corners, his sound has always lent itself to the more traditional dubstep vibe. As proved by these two savage collaborations. "Orders" sees him teaming up with old mate Logos for a hammering halftime vibe that pays respect to the traditions but does with a slight techno twist. Flip for "The Mould" where the breaks come out in full force. A proper swinging jam with wild drums and an elasticated bassline, there's nice nod to the turn of the century dark garage and early Bingo feel as we're pushed and shunted into bassy parts unknown. Sentry just keep on smashing it.

Cat: LOCUSV 002. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. El Molino (3:18)
  2. Swarm (3:02)
  3. Buccaneer (3:18)
Review: Lord a mercy, it's Lord Jabu and he's bearing down heavily on the Locus Sound who finally follow up last summer's killer 001 from SBK. Three tracks full, each one full of drama and spooky storytelling. "El Molino" takes us on a midnight graveyard stroll, all shadowy and pranged while "Swarm" brings the funk with a powerful 2007 flavoured widescreen bassline. Finally "Buccaneer" does a sea shanty on your mum and dad's bed, its creepy bassline not caring if the sheets become untucked. Scandalously good.

  3. Bad From Mi Born (feat Rider Shafique - Eusebeia Truth & Rights remix) (4:45)
Review: Fresh from releasing the Birthmark and Eusebeia album, Bristol's Earthtrax returns with some old friends. Obeah is at the steering wheel once again, tagging in two exceptional MCs. Man like Trimetheus dissects the craft and graft of badmanism on the lead track; "Dead In This Ting" lives up to its name as his rifles out shots with clarity and venom. "Bad From Mi Born" sees him re-linking with Rider Shafique. Picking up where they left us on the label in 2018 with "Fix Up", it's another smoky, midnight stepper. And this time it comes courtesy of a classic jungle mix from Eusebeia. Get deaded.

Review: Buckle up for Bukkha. After years of releases on the likes of ZamZam, Moonshine, Infernal, Dub-Stuy and many other respected 140 stables, American in Spain Evert Cristoff makes his debut on Gourmet with "Sekkle Tune". A bulbous traditional dub-minded piece, complete with melodica flutters, it hits hard like Amit jamming the Scientist. For a more dancefloor-focussed take flip for a shake-up by RDG where the beats add a little more skip while maintaining the raw simplicity of the original. Grubs up.

Review: Riding the chem trails of his remarkable "Deep, Dark & Dangerous" EP, Dalek One jumps aboard D-Operation Drop's new ship 786. Four tracks deep, he's taking us on a serious cruise. As always with Colorado long-timer, less is more and tension is always high. Flavours range from subtly jungle-influenced slo-mo warper "Nobody Got My Style" to the melting textures, centipede bass and haunted house basses of "Shackled". Fresh for the lockdown generation.

  4. Lord Chamberlain (2:52)
Review: Fresh outa Glasgow, Creep Woland digs deep into the early jungle sounds. Think young J Majik, think Guy Called Gerald, "Medieval Draw" kicks off with icy pads and stop-start drums creating momentum, "Falkirk Triangle" plays more with harmonics as the bassline flips between layers of shade while "Imposter Syndrome" is a much creepier, tense affair with its harp strums and ominous bass tones and layered breaks. Finally "Lord Chamberlain" closes the show on an orchestral tip. Vibes with a touch of mourn. Perfect for these times.

Review: Yes! It's high time Youngsta featured on his own label and it's happening right here with "Progress". Laying down a creepy graveyard groove laced with all precision balance of funk, space and swampiness, it's the perfect beat for Killa P and Long Range to do their thing. Extolling the virtues of hard hustling, investment and caring for those closest, both P and the Long man go in as hard as the track itself with some wholesome food for thought on life directions. 5. Fear (SP:MC remix) (5:34)
Review: Fresh from tidy 2019 EPs on Sector 7 Sounds and System Music, Drone returns to the latter label with his first missive of 2020. There's plenty of highlights stretched across the EP's two slabs of wax, with our favourites including the creepy mix of deep dubstep rhythms and Autechre style melodies that is "20 K", the slow-burn headiness of "Flooded" - where picturesque watery melodies ride a skeletal beat and vibrating sub-bass - and the aggressive late night dancefloor paranoia of "Fear". SP:MC provides a tasty rework of that cut, focusing the action on a crunchier rhythm track and pulverising waves of distorted analogue bass.

Review: Versa on System; it's a match made in dub heaven. Slower than the usual club-ready output V.I.V.E.K's label has often been known for, these are perfect home listening for the current lockdown era as Versa goes in deep; "Temple Song" is all about the subtle loopy insistencies while "Breakthrough" sinks us even deeper into our chair with its minimal ingredients providing maximum immersion. Finally "Biosphere" ushers in the kicks for a warm and rolling dub techno escapade. Stunning.

Review: Tripsmith OG, The Widdler continues to spin his strange sonic webs across the 140 landscape. This time making his debut on Sleeper's Crucial, it's another strange and eerie bassline brew from the New Jersey producer. "Venting" dusts off the pipes and blasts them over a wobbled-out and slimy dungeon aesthetics, "Out There" hits with much more of a grumpier decay bassline and a sombre, mildly pranged out tone thanks to those strange sirens in the background. "Magnetic" closes the show with Smilodon on collab duties. Woozy and warped, these beats are so off-grid they've made their own compost toilets and drink rain water. Deliciously far out.

Review: D stands for dark. D stands for dangerous. D stands for devil-may-care badness from man like Von D. We actually have no idea what D stands for in his name because we're too busy jamming to his beats. Tunes like these. Exceptional system music, forever fine-tuned, his return to Kenzo's Artikal is every bit as heavy hitting, warm and natural as you'd expect. From the grime-tinted drama of "Obstacles" to the premium rubber ball bounce of "Goat" to the subtle funk and cinematic feel of "Whatevs", Von D isn't just making tunes here. He's telling stories. D stands for deal with it.

Review: Fine far-out beat magic from LA's Oxossi as he builds on a spotless body of work on labels such as Banana Stand, Crucial and Deep Dark & Dangerous with this Subaltern debut. Three tracks, three unique tales. "Sama" weaves purple synth sweeps with mournful eastern pipes in a warm and woozy way while "Saut Dans Le Vide" brings in the pianos to effect. The final chapter goes into max-saturated bleep bliss overdrive. Imagine joyriding an SR Nova on a rainbow under the influence. Buckle up.

Review: Witness the sickness. Kahn & Neek reunite for their first release in over four years on Boofy's Sector 7 and the wait's been more than worth it. Still full of tension, still unbounded, still heavy as elephants, "(Having A Sick Time) In The Mansions Of Bliss" takes the lead and it's classic K&N business with its grime elements and big downpitched string riff. It's backed by three more disarming messages: Both "Random Lab" and "Shimmer" take things down to 130 creating more space between the drum hits and heavy chords before "Venus" bids the last farewell with dense atmospheres, big clouds of harmonics and some unique drum sounds. Let's hope they don't leave it another four years.

Review: Every bit as heavy as their name implies; Canadian duo Rockstone make their debut on Navy Cut with four granite jams designed to shake systems. "Atlantic" sets the scene with tidal bass chugs firing on automatic while "Real Sound" flips the vibe with a deep rootsical message. Flip for more stripped back designs; "Creation" is a meditative creeper with an exceptional twist in the bassline midway while "Infrared It" closes triumphantly as Shafique lays down ragamuffin words of wisdom over a tunnelling dungeon bassline. Rock on.

Review: Back in the early years of grime, Mega Mos Wanted (or Mos Wanted as he was more regularly known) was an in-demand beat-maker whose rhythm tracks underpinned the songs of Wiley and Dizzee Rascal. As this rare solo outing on Dream Eater proves, he's still capable of serving up killer beats. These are a little more heavily electronic and colourful than some of his works, but the beats and basslines remain tough and punchy. We're particularly enjoying the rolling electronic sleaze that is "Blip Works" and the fizzing, polyrhythmic brilliance of "UK Drama (Remix)", but the whole EP is impressively strong.

  1. Altair (5:04)

Review: Off to a firing start last year on the likes of Foundation Audio, FKOF, Crucial and 786, Portuguese darksmith 3WA has the honour of launching Earth & Stone, the new label from Subtle FM's Chalcraft. Taking off where the likes of "Viagem" and "Black Marsh" left us, the "Altair" EP is awash with spooky harmonics and eerie, creeped out textures and trippy off-beat drum patterns. The title track sets the parameters with its folding tubular bass that shoots up an octave or three when you least expect it, "Laser Lords" follows with a stern lesson in percussive persuasion wrapped up in a raffish Coki style bassline before "King Of Style" signs the deal off with a swaggering groove and techno attitude. 3WA? 3WOAH mate.

  4. Let Go (4:44)
Review: After a pretty busy 2019 on the likes of Infernal, Natural Selectas, Well-Rounded and Hotplates, donnie Dubz returns to his own Foundation Audio imprint with four serious meals. "Anxious" lives up to its name as the bassline almost moans a lament and argues with itself over eerie pads and spacious percussion clatters, "Ghostin" with Teffa takes things to a much heavier corner of the dancefloor as the wobbles get increasingly gullier. Flip for two more on-point constructions: "Headnod" ploughs through the ether with a toxic bass stomp and voices of some of the biggest pioneers of the jungle game while "Let Go" closes on a deliciously trippy and squelchy garage flex. What a way to start the decade.

Review: Basic Rhythm alter ego East Man returns to his Hi Tek imprint with his second anti gum-flapping manifesto. Rough, sludgy, oppressive; "Jaws" is a stripped back to the bulbous bare essentials. Just a warm 808 bass/kick and snare hits, weaving and bobbing with heavy hypnosis. Flip for "Border Clash" where strange bee's nest textures buzz between the bass hits and shattered percussive hits. Paranoid, confusing, heavy. Dark times inspire dark tunes.

"Psychopath" sees them on a stern flex as they team up with fellow hot prospect DLDW8 and "Originator" is one for the intergalactic b-boys who dance in slo-motion, all sludgy but full of cosmic attitude. "Toll" seals the deal a flow of twisted chimes that fold over each other like a Dali sketch. Disarming.

Review: Versa returns to his Atone imprint with more classic dub explorations. "Transcending Space & Dub" sets the parameters with springy, trippy ease; it's warped and so roomy you could lose yourself inside it for days. "Saint" hits with more of a traditional dub warmth countered by the melancholy of the French horns. Finally "Snowfox" is a creeper just as its name suggests. Nodding much more towards dub techno, once again Versa lays down a little hypnosis trickery before the melodica takes the lead and adds a whole other story. Grab this while you can.

All uplifting, animated harmonics, this genuinely sounds like nothing else around and sounds so refreshing for it. The same can be said for "Yu Me Us". Imagine a 2020 take on the purple funk sounds; there's some deep under-the-sea enchantment going on with high levels of funk and weirdness. This is a genuinely exceptional and forward-thinking 140 record, Rygby raises the levels again.

"Systematic Error" takes the lead with a sinister acid narrative that bubbles ominously before the bleeps rise to an ultimate euphoric stand off. "Hello" takes things to a much deeper, stripped back playground giving the ricocheting radar and big belly bass fills stacks of room to frolic. Finally "Iridescence" brings in the synths and brass for an emotional finale. Crucial and powerful pieces of work from two scene dons once again living up to their name.

  1. Orbit Dub (4:11)
  2. Theory Dub (4:14)
Review: Since launching in 2014, Portland's ZamZam Sounds imprint has offered up a string of beautifully packaged seven-inch singles from a mixture of big hitters and rising stars from the global bass music scene. Their latest missive comes from Dayzero, a Japanese dubstep producer best known for his outings on Wheel & Deal, Sentry and, most recently, Vomitspit. The two tracks here are weighty, intergalactic and otherworldly, mixing dub style rhythms with the kind of angular, razor-sharp sub-bass motifs more often associated with dancefloor dubstep. Both cuts are quality, though it's rolling A-side "Orbit Dub" - all lolloping dub beats, wobble bass, metallic effects and paranoid aural textures - that really stands out.
