Invader Spade - "Golden Retriever" (3:16)
Drone - "Lil Jug" (2:51)
Lemzly Dale - "Track 5" (4:34)
BR3 - "October" (5:07)
Review: It's now five up for the Pearly Whites crew and their self titled series of on going various artist's collections. This one kicks off with the slow and heavy sounds of Deseplate's 'One Day' before the flute laced, jazz-tinged and stoner delights of Boss Mischief's 'Ice Cold.' There are more fuel good and heady sounds with lush flues from Invader Spade then Drone gets more dark and gritty on 'Lil Jug.' Lemzly Dale and BR3 close out this superb mix of trap, grime and dubstep.

Been This Way (5:06)
East Coast (5:08)
Review: Finn "Drone" Donohue appears to be a producer on the rise. This may only be his second 12" single (his first slipped out last year), but he's already showing signs of developing a trademark sound all of his own. Both "Sapphire" and "Down This Way" are dark, clandestine and paranoid, with grime style stabs and spacey electronic effects clustering around a bustling, hot-stepping rhythm track that seemingly charges from the speakers towards your sound-space. Closer "East Coast", which is exclusive to the vinyl edition of this release, is arguably even more raw and aggressive, with colossal sub-bass pulses, creepy melodies and densely layered background textures (think cut-up vocal samples, white noise and unusual field recordings) all catching the ear.

Horror (3:22)
Horror (Boofy remix) (3:24)
Review: Get out of the shower scene and onto our decks. Drone follows up his Circadian Rhythms release with a ruthless jam that's straight out of the Norman Bates guidebook to life. Stark staccato strings, booming bass and spacious beats; this is pure Bristol Psycho business and it's backed by another west country horror Boofy on the remix. Chopping up the original within an inch of its life, he adds a little ghetto-twist in the beats for added murderation. Heavy.

Flooded (4:39)
Fear (4:54)
Fear (SP:MC remix) (5:34)
Review: Fresh from tidy 2019 EPs on Sector 7 Sounds and System Music, Drone returns to the latter label with his first missive of 2020. There's plenty of highlights stretched across the EP's two slabs of wax, with our favourites including the creepy mix of deep dubstep rhythms and Autechre style melodies that is "20 K", the slow-burn headiness of "Flooded" - where picturesque watery melodies ride a skeletal beat and vibrating sub-bass - and the aggressive late night dancefloor paranoia of "Fear". SP:MC provides a tasty rework of that cut, focusing the action on a crunchier rhythm track and pulverising waves of distorted analogue bass.

Amphibious
Cat: SYSTM 025. Rel: 10 Apr 19
Amphibious (3:46)
Lucid Dreams (5:07)
Review: Fresh Sector 7, Bristol's Drone makes his debut on V.I.V.E.K's System Sound with two smoking slabs of bass weight. "Amphibious" funks up the radar for a bleep excursion through the swampiest of textures with only a trippy riser and noir spoken word. Flip for "Lucid Dreams" where things take a creepier undertone thanks to the cavernous space, waterdrops, roomy switchy kicks, pranged out reverse manoeuvres and a sub as thick as marmite. Immense.

Evil Sky (12")

Evil Sky (4:35)
Back & Forth (4:09)
M416 (4:10)
Disturbed (4:39)
Review: 1985 is a platform for forward thinking electronic music, basing its roots in the 170/85 BPM range and beyond, that has dispatched previous missives from the likes of Monty, Fracture and veteran Alix Perez. Their latest comes from ascendant young Bristolian Drone and it has a fitting title: Evil Sky. From the murky low end theory of the title track, to the deep dubstep of 'Back & Forth' and the dark industrial grime of 'M416' with its seething subterranean energy - the stuff of nightmares never sounded so good!

Faded

Cat: SYSTM 037. Rel: 12 May 21
Drone & Hyroglifics - "Faded" (4:49)
Drone - "Spear" (4:00)
Review: Drone is on fire right now. His debut with 1985 was a real standout and now he links up to great effect with rising d&b talent Hyroglifics. The serve up some straight sound system heat with 'Faded,' a high pressure cut with deadly bass and deft synth designs that ride over the stumbling kicks. ON the reverse of this heavyweight 180g slab is 'Spear.' It is an icy and haunting stepper with some distant radio transmissions, lurching bass and bright melodic daubs to bring a little colour to the all consuming rhythm, powerful stuff on every level.

Goodbye (2:04)
Review: After spending eight years showcasing his wares on labels including System Music, Sector 7 Sounds and Coyote Records, deep bass music specialist Drone is ready to unveil his debut album, 'Dance With The Devil'. In keeping with his boundary-blurring approach, the 13-track set presents tracks that variously draw influence from deep dubstep, grime, electro, skwee and d&b. It's a hugely atmospheric and - it should be noted - on-point affair, with Drone being joined by a host of well-regarded collaborators including Snowy, Alix Perez, Hyroglifics, Deft and Elm. Our picks of a strong bunch include the skittish, clandestine 140 business of 'Swamp', the dubby trip-hop/deep soul of 'Ski Mask' and the breathless electro-goes-d&b flex of 'Jugtown'.
