Old Mount (4:44)
Bloody Mess (4:45)
Worms (4:34)
Review: 3WA returns to Foundation Audio with a monsters stepper that will loosen your bowels thanks to its serious low end wobble. The opener is the chief example of that with its stuttering kicks and prickly hits all underpinned by a warm, wubbing undercurrent of lovely bass. 'Old Mount' has another bottomlessly deep low end and lithe, shiny synths bring to mind an urban metropolis late at night and 'Bloody Mess' then cuts loose muffled vocals and slapping hits overlaid with manic melodies straight from an early computer game soundtrack. Closer 'Worms' slows things down to a predatory crawl.

Bumba (hand-stamped 10" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FAVX 013. Rel: 04 Apr 23
Bumba (4:40)
Poverty (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Ghostin' EP
Cat: FAV 015. Rel: 25 Feb 20
Anxious (4:11)
Ghostin (feat Teffa) (4:37)
Headnod (3:45)
Let Go (4:44)
Review: After a pretty busy 2019 on the likes of Infernal, Natural Selectas, Well-Rounded and Hotplates, donnie Dubz returns to his own Foundation Audio imprint with four serious meals. "Anxious" lives up to its name as the bassline almost moans a lament and argues with itself over eerie pads and spacious percussion clatters, "Ghostin" with Teffa takes things to a much heavier corner of the dancefloor as the wobbles get increasingly gullier. Flip for two more on-point constructions: "Headnod" ploughs through the ether with a toxic bass stomp and voices of some of the biggest pioneers of the jungle game while "Let Go" closes on a deliciously trippy and squelchy garage flex. What a way to start the decade.

Cat: FAV 005. Rel: 08 Aug 17
Kingdom Dub (5:36)
Space Cadet (4:56)
Drainpipe (5:34)
Review: Foundation sounds from the man like Dubz and limited to 300. This is serious: "Kingdom Dub" is a tree-swinging powerhouse with a chest-beating bassline and superb swing in the weighted drums. "Space Cadet" strips down the session to the naked rudiments as a heavily reverbed drum slaps and warped FX tickle. "Drainpipe" seals the deal on a trippy note where the rhythmic elements have been slow cooked to a squishy malleable texture. You know what to do...

Cat: FAVX 005. Rel: 28 Jul 20
Fantomatique (5:06)
Vox Dub (5:07)
Review: If you're looking for some "militant dubstep bass weight" (as the accompanying hype sheet calls it), then we'd heartily recommend this limited-edition outing from Foundation Audio founder Chad Dubz and occasional label artist Quasar. They hit the ground running with creepy, atmospheric and spaced-out A-side "Fantomatique", where fizzing electronic noises, dubbed-out synth sounds and frankly foreboding audio textures drift around a tweaked wobble style bassline and head-nodding deep dubstep beats. Flipside "Vox Dub" is even more dubbed-out, with mangled, mutilated male vocal samples and echoing background chords weaving in and out of another bassbin-bothering, mind-altering late-night groove.

The Ununderstandable EP
Cat: FAV 014. Rel: 26 Nov 19
Stomp Dub (5:56)
Ununderstandable (5:30)
Chasm (4:37)
Review: Don't be fooled by the name Clearlight and an EP title like "The Understandable"; the sounds on this Foundation Audio EP (and everything the Belgian has been releasing for the last five or so years) are never clear or understandable. Trippy, alien and disarming, his sense of abstract funk reaches new levels on this new three-tracker. "Stomp Dub" takes the lead; a big old swampy number with heartbeat bass and deep ripples of harmonics it sets us up for the title track. Paranoid, tense, peppered in psychedelic flourishes and unhurried, it's the type of record you can spend years listening to and never quite understand all its mysteries. "Chasm" meanwhile closes on the most haunted note with woozy hang drums, strange squiggles and outer spacious cat mewls. Clearly brilliant.

I'm Going Down (4:14)
Review: Bristol's Foundation Audio label has dropped a couple of slabs of wax this month, and this limited edition 10" is one of them from the eponymous production team. It's a direct-to-dance floor two-track offering limited to just 300 copies but not limited in the damage it will do. There is a real tropical heat and r&b steaminess to 'One In A Million' thanks to its well-placed and frankly iconic 90s sample from Aaliyah. The flipside tune 'I'm Going Down' is again built around a brilliant r&b sample that wrenches at the heartstrings while hefty kicks and menacing low-end wobble build around the vocals. Two killers, for sure.

Heavy Smoke EP

Kaba Rhythm (3:55)
Sub 37 (5:04)
Heavy Smoke (4:34)
Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

Kindred (dub) (4:09)
Review: Pugilist returns with two more slabs of black magic. 'Ayahuasca' takes us on a trip to see the shaman. Unhurried and machine-like in its plough-like nature, as the mid-point hits we hear the hypnotic sounds of the chimes that gradually takeover the trip with more and more intensity. 'Kindred' on the B, meanwhile, rolls with much more of a deep garage, bubbly dub feel. As always with Pugilist, both hit hard. Limited to 300 copies.

Submersible (4:56)
Laniakea (4:52)
Primal Instinct (5:27)
Review: Bristol's Foundation Audio return this week, with another one by the prolific Parisian Remy Gallet aka Quasar bringing his deep vibes to the party on the Badlandz EP. As you would expect, it is a largely meditative affair, with the title track setting the theme nicely on the A side. A sparse and minimalist arrangement lets those fully expressive bass frequencies play centre stage, while 'Submersible' (much like the name suggests) is the closest thing we've ever heard that could be described as aquatic dubstep. On the flip, the booming dub antics of 'Laniakea' scream no more Mr Nice Guy, while the complex and layered riddims of 'Primal Instinct' close it out.

If Not The Orb (4:45)
Review: Serious wax from Denver to Bristol: already a big deal digitally, Foundation Audio press up "Dusted" for some black matter murkery. Once again we find the Sub.mission resident getting busy with the fusions as strong notes of traditional dub, techno and dubstep all get the blend up. Right from the very start we're taken on a trip; the slimy 4x4 gutter funk of the title track kicks off the EP, the superb cosmic dubstep finale "If Not The Orb" brings us to the end with all unique shades in between. Essential even if you've already got the digis.

Shell Fish (4:39)
Review: From pioneering trip-hop and the foundations of underground sounds in the late '80s with Smith & Mighty, to writing some of the most seminal bass tracks of all time under his RSD alias - it's fair to say that Rob Smith is a legend. Bristol-based label Foundation Audio are once again pushing the future sounds of dubstep here, and are proud to present this red hot 10" by the man. On the A side, we have the deep down and dirty dub of 'Old Fish' that's sure to get a reaction or two in the dancehall, followed up on the flip by the echo-laden low end theory of 'Shell Fish'.

I Wonder Why (3:46)
Review: Sheesh! And the award for the swampiest, most mutated and wooziest 140 jam of recent times goes to Sibla & Teffa's "Bobby". Presented here on the a; proper sleazy, rolling, oily cosmic dub funk - with some fantastic vocal stamps from the master - it's quite remarkable for the pair's first ever collaboration. As is 'I Wonder Why' on the B. Taking a slightly more traditional dub route, here they dig deep into the roots and really get involved in the sounds and elements, gradually easing us deeper and deeper into the blend before we realise we're cap-deep in a pretty heady psychedelic stew... And we have no plans to swim to shore. Limited to 300, this won't hang around.

Tribal Flex (4:41)
YY (5:36)
Review: Powerful hypnosis sessions from south UK artist Tom Woods AKA Sub Basics: Foundation Audio return after a short break with two stunning adventures. Both heavily groove-based, 'Tribal Flex' and 'YY' roll with percussive momentum, sitting somewhere between contemporary 140, timeless dub and universal dancefloor dynamics. The former is all about that bouncy kick and its sweltering tropical sound elements while 'YY' is on more of a mystical tip. Both flex hard, there's nothing basic about this operation whatsoever.

Advance (feat Moss) (3:58)
Sychronise (3:58)
Bubbles (3:16)
Ostrov (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio continues to fly the flag for the deepest end of the dubstep spectrum with more bowel evacuating sounds, this time from Teffa. He draws on a rich history of sound system culture to really test your bass bins and lay down some killer low end wobbles. "Advance" (feat Moss) is an eerie opener with devastating bass and only the most subtle of synth details to keep you locked in place. "Bubbles" is another standout with its playful bassline sure to get big reactions, then "Ostrov" is a slow motion stepper with computer game melodies and real futurism.

General
General (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: FAV 008. Rel: 19 Jun 18
Teffa & Conzi - "General" (4:41)
Teffa - "Young Man In A Dance" (3:44)
Teffa - "Old Days" (4:39)
Review: Fresh from a fine outing on White Peach, Baltic beat-maker Teffa brings his brand of bass-weight badness to Foundation Audio. The skank is strong on A-side "General", a leisurely deep dubstep roller smothered in dub-wise effects, jaunty reggae riffs and the patois toasting of guest Conzi. The reggae soundsystem influences continue to come to the fore on the flip, first via the electroshock beats, undulating sunshine horns and mind-altering bass-weight of "Young Man In A Dance", and then via the vintage dubstep business of "Old Days". The latter sounds like a tribute to the early days of Croydon dubstep.

Shakuhachi (4:38)
Samos (6:01)
MIC (4:41)
Review: Most recently spotted on Foundation Audio's digital arm collaborating on Krook's EP, LA's Tetrad switches lanes to the label's vinyl league with three outstanding system slugs. "Shakuhachi" sets the tone with a rounded unhurried bounce that ploughs though any scoops like lava. It's joined by the similarly flabby bass-slapped "Samos" where there's less of a bass melody but these epic trippy trails coming off each sub. Finally, "MIC" closes on a slightly cosmic-yet-barbed touch as dreamy arpeggios wrap around thick treacle subs and some dark politic messages. Serious bass integrity.

Ashes Fall
Cat: FAV 004. Rel: 21 Mar 17
Tetrad & Ahkur - "Ashes Fall" (5:31)
Tetrad - "Crumble" (6:09)
Review: LA not-so-confidential: Tetrad has been developing a strong reputation for slick sub aesthetics for a little while now, appearing on labels such as Sublimate and Sure State. Now bringing his emerging friend and sonic kindred spirit Ahkur along for the ride, the result is the smoke-stacked, toxic bass croaker that's "Ashes Fall", a powerful piece of darkness designed for 3am and later. "Crumble" sees Tetrad back on the solo flex with a sweet sub that sits behind everything anonymously until it starts to flop out behind the kicks in a dizzying, almost physical way. Authentic.

Erf (3:46)
Nostromo (3:45)
Agite (4:27)
Dwaas (with Tosti) (5:00)
Review: It's been a great year for Belgian basssmith Zygos. Having kicked off the year on Chad Dubz Foundation with the "Future" EP and appearing on Encrypted, Rarefied and Subaltern throughout the year, he now ends 2017 with another precision sub-low serenade. "Erf" is the creeper of the set, all foggy and graveyard stomping, "Nostromo" is the emotional moment with a swooning slo-mo Q&A that's pregnant in hope while "Agite" plays the consummate cosmic piece with sci-fi flurries zipping back and forth over a loosely-hemmed drum arrangement. Finally "Dwaas" ends on a motely note as Zygos teams up with Tosti for a sense-rattling finale where the percussion is scattered over the bass in a funky cascading way. Time to fly.

Rotation (4:50)
Sick As A Dog (6:27)
Tumble Dub (4:40)
Review: Heavy rotation: Belgium badman Zygos returns to Foundation Audio with a full range of sounds. Three tracks, three vibes: opener "Rotation" is just as much of a techno jam as it is a dubstep track, all rolling motion and layers of percussion, "Sick As A Dog" brings the graveyard ghetto vibes, all spooky pads, groaning bass and rattlesnake snare rolls while "Tumble Dub" closes business on much more of a traditional halftime swagger vibe but with a mechanical hook that lives up to its name. Loopy business. Zygos always smashes it.
