A/T/O/S
A/T/O/S (Skream mix)
A/T/O/S (Commodo remix)
Review: MAJOR heat abounds on this. Mysterious act ATOS have delivered a smouldering slab of fractured, future soul. Sitting on its own island somewhere between Massive Attack, Submotion Orchestra and Burial, it's utterly beautiful. Naturally Skream's remix hits every spot. With shuddering half steps and a re-imagined vocal arrangement, it's like a whole new tune. Commodo, meanwhile, opts for strange jazzed out percussion and a dampened trippiness on the vocal. Three unique versions; each one of them stunning. Don't miss this.

Unknown Force (5:55)
Review: There's no stopping the gnarly Germanic charms of Bukez right now. The dust hasn't had a hot minute to settle on his Decade Of Weight album and here he is laying the seasick smack down on mothership Deep Medi. "The Main Rule" is a woozy specimen, all tripped out and twisted. "Unknown Force" follows a similarly loose-footed route with more emphasis on the alien atmospheres and multi-textured drums. Make no mistakes; Bukez is bossing right now.

Shift (feat JME)
Shift (instrumental)
Review: On his first release for Deep Medi Musik this year, Commodo taps up JME for a mean lyrical flow over the top of a typically monstrous production, making a perfect dubstep / grime crossover track in the process. JME has a blast pointing back to classic reference points from Kano and Wiley and many more in his conscious MC turn, while Commodo's beat prowls in the background with that exotic charm that has always marked out his style from the rest of the pack. There's a hooky chorus and plenty of grand stabs, and for those who just want the tune the instrumental is bundled in as well. The fact that the beat stands up on its own without any trouble says a lot about Commodo's studio prowess, which is no doubt why he continues to be a mainstay on Mala's label.

Straight Reptilian
Wish
Review: Deep Medi Musik's Commodo has remained defiantly anonymous, with little information out there despite the three critically lauded releases for Mala's label in recent years. Resurfacing once more for a timely Deep Medi transmission, the producer is giving nothing more away here on the three track Space Cash 12" which brandishes some brilliantly ghoulish cover art courtesy of Tom J Newell. The title track sets the tone, commencing like some lost 60s spy thriller before degraded drums swagger drunkenly into focus and call a heaving bassline into action, whilst the vicious "Straight Reptilian" sees Commodo operate on the down stroke, creating an aggressive monster that's filled with a dizzying level of rhythmic detail in full flow. "Wish" retains the degraded feel of its predecessors, ricocheting a recycled soul hook around stuttering half step programming with a sense of unpredictability that never gets tired.

Axis
Review: Deep Medi Musik's northern correspondent Commodo truly impressed with the Commodo double pack that surfaced earlier this year, ensuring expectations are at a premium as he returns to Mala's label for a third outing. Over the course of its six years of existence to date, Deep Medi has increasingly become relied upon for those seeking out some proper 140bpm head business and Buckwild ensures standards are maintained with drums that constantly threaten to veer off grid under pressure from the densely layered, cluttered percussion and low end bass that only reveals its true power on a worthy system. There's a drunken funk to the twisted flow of the track that will appeal to many, and it's complemented by "Axis" with a tighter, metallic flex that swaggers forth as Commodo flickers between strange dubbed out refrains.

Procession (5:47)
Review: Sheffield-based Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has been making tracks for nearly 12 years now and returns to Mala's Deep Medi Musik with the Procession EP. The three tracks on offer are loosely based on a H.P. Lovecraft inspired story "where an investigator shows up at an unfrequented hotel and discovers a supernatural cult." After the trippy wall of sound polyrhythms on the introspective 'Lobby Music,' more Cthulhu Mythos vibes await on the deep dubstep journey 'Eldritch' before going further down the spiral with the arcane and dusty downbeat epic 'Procession'.

Alpha
Review: With a string of well supported releases on labels such as Redshift One, Kokeshi and Boka, Manchester sub-surgeon Compa makes his debut on Deep Medi. The result, as you'd expect, is mesmerising from the off. "Narabeh" is as spacious as dubstep gets; stretched pads moan in the background while percussive elements ricochet off each other with spellbinding effect and bass plunges barge into the fore. "Alpha", meanwhile, slinks and sways with a hypnotic hand-drum percussive groove and a sharp, spiked out slo-mo arpeggio. Seriously hooky.

Four Four Claps (6:02)
Review: Compa hails from Manchester, but his productions and his sound are quite deeply imbedded into London's rich dubstep dynasty. The young bass wizard is back on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik, starting off with the murky stepper riddim called "Truth In Sound", a wreckage of beats and sonics that is dissolved by the mutant waves of "Noctule". "Tibetan Chant" is more of a tribal dance ritual to the Gods, and "Four Four Claps" turns things nastier and away from the deeper waters that we're used to hearing Compa sail on.

Armada Bleeps (4:41)
Review: Deep Medi Musik continues on its mission to find the darkest, deepest and heaviest dubstep out there with a new bowel-rumbling release from Compa. It opens with the lurching drums and insistent stabs of 'Mind Control', a spacious wobbler with impossibly weighty bass. 'Emergence' then gets a little busier with zippy leads pinging about the mix and frosty static adding texture to the low end wub. 'Stronghold' is another bleak futuristic vision where all humanlike has been replaced by AI and 'Armada Bleeps' brings glassy texture, edgy chords and glitching breaks.

The Calling
Review: One of dubstep's oldest heads, Cyrus is welcomed back into the Deep Medi Musik fold with a double drop of forward thinking dubstep. Whilst there's an inherent sense of unease and tension that runs throughout the spacious "Visions" via the creeping sonics that pervade the lower echelons, it's more than offset by the deftly crafted swing that you can't help but dip your shoulders to. "The Calling" expertly rolls out its rhythmic intent, keeping you waiting before the stuttering half step takes effect amidst a devilishly dubbed bed of sound. A restrained air remains throughout, whilst the subtle percussive touches which sound like two samurais duelling keep you hooked.

Storm
Review: Little information regarding Dark Tantrums has been accrued in the period since "Unborn" appeared on Mala's much talked about XLR8R mix last year. That track is finally available for us mere mortals thanks to Mala's perennially on point Deep Medi imprint. Arriving with a dedication to seminal R&B producer Teddy Riley scribed across both sides of the runout groove, the lead track is just one of those records any self respecting DJ needs in their arsenal, adopting a spacious treatment of fuzzed out purple textures over a gloriously lolloping half step rhythm underlined by the kind of sub bass that consumes you when heard on a big system. Allow yourself to plunge to the depths of dystopian dubstep drama on the flip with "Storm" which retains a certain restrained quality throughout as if some immovable force is holding back the growing rave pressure.

Highest Strain
Review: Deep Medi Musik expand operations with the addition of The Dub Mechanics, a South London duo formed of the K Man and Mr Kerox whose approach to dubstep leans heavily on the genre's influence from Dub. On the basis of this, it's not hard to see why Mala would want to release their music and the two tracks here justify his faith in the duo. "The Clash" comes stacked with the sort of trad-dubstep traits you expect to hear on a Deep Medi release, jagged sub bass rises and drops over choppy vocal edits and snappy drums and will be familiar to anyone that's dropped a shoulder to Mala in a club over the past few months. "Highest Strain" shows the duo in more contemplative mood, fully exploring the Dub sounds that influence them so much and offers an excitingly melodic contrast to the A Side. More please Deep Medi.

Change Of Direction
Review: Deep Medi Musik fans will be familiar with The Dub Mechz, the South London duo formed of K Man and Kero who made an auspicious debut on Mala's label under The Dub Mechanics name last year. Why they've elected for a slight name change isn't clear, but the focus on soundsystem culture remains very much central to the duo's approach on the lead track. "Broken LFO" is pure rudeness; you can feel the speakers shifting uneasily under the sheer bass weight of the lead sub as it rolls out aggressively, whilst the percussion snaps with naughty glee. "Change Of Direction" is just that, a notably less aggressive production that looks to a sense of Utopian melody to maintain momentum.

Gantz - "Spry Sinister"
Gantz & El Mahdy Jr - "Rising"
Review: Deep Medi regular Gantz has developed a spotless reputation for subverted bass treatments but "Spry Sinister" is unlike anything he's ever done before. In fact it's unlike anything anyone has ever done before; swaying on a warped triplet riddim, the seasick groove is compounded by a paranoid vocal loop that persists with hypnotic venom. "Rising", a co-lab with El Mahdy Jr, sees Gantz tapping into his Eastern roots with a string-heavy half-stepper that's coated with mystic prayer calls and an unnervingly rich bottom end. Truly stunning.

Review: The Banshee EP was one of the last musical projects the pair of Glume and Phossa worked on together in Bristol before they left the city to live elsewhere. Lead single 'Banshee' has been played for years on the circuit and always got great reactions, so the pair sat down to write three more tunes to go with it for the sake of this EP. That was during lockdown so they haven't been road tested yet but rest assured when they are, the club will erupt. Each one hits deep, with trippy synth motifs from the Orient on 'Jitter', warrior energy on 'Vessel' and more broken beats on 'Sunken.'

Cosmos
Review: Weighing in with some monolithic dubstep styles on Mala's ever excellent Deep Medi Musik imprint, Japanese producer par excellence Goth Trad proves that there can be some give in big room ravey dubstep, and though the track may primarily lurch around aggravated mid-range synth grind, the moments of calm creep in with control that comes from a diverse and adaptable producer. On the flip "Cosmos" takes the deeper approach, using inter-locking percussion and devastating sub bass for a classic exercise in proper dubstep. Whichever kind of set you're plumping for, this release is definitely for the purists.

Sunbeam
Review: Something a little different here from Mala's renowned and revered Deep Medi Musik imprint. Goth Trad kicks off "Two Face" with a trembling, eastern trill in the intro, interrupted by smacking drum kicks in a bleak, hollow soundscape. A deep, warping b-line underpins the tune with its computer game bleeps and recurring motifs. Up next, "Sunbeam" offers a more instantly recognisable Deep Medi sound with sweeping atmospherics whistling around a stabbing beat, deadly subs and low end prowess. Pattering bongos creep in around the halfway point definitely one for fans of the Mala, Pinch and Loefah crowd.

Sunbeam VIP (5:17)
Review: Japan's Takeaki Maruyama's dark, deep and sweltering pseudo dubstep has been around for longer than you might think. Before being signed early on by Mala for his own Deep Medi Muzik, Goth-Trad was releasing cutting-edge bass science on labels such as DNA Kalacta and Popgroup Recordings. His return to Deep Medi is a significant one, and "Sinker" is likely to be one of the best tunes that he's made in a while - those bouncy, fluttering swirls of mutant bass are docile yet vibrant and possess a sort of subtle menace to them. "Sunbeam VIP", however, is a pure corner-dweller's delight, a brooding little bass monster with enough subs to gravitate you off your feet and into hyper-space. Another winner from both artist and label. Quality assured.

Review: Japanese dubstep don Goth-Trad (real name Takeaki Maruyama) is back on Deep Medi for the first time in six years. Those who like the more abstract, intense, noisy, full-throttle and experimental end of his sound will love the new VIP reboot of 2012 single 'Airhead'. It's little less than an assault on these senses full of laser-gun electronics, vibrating motifs, machine-gun bass and industrial-strength beats, all whipped together into a frenzy of intensity. In contrast, flipside 'Apes' is deep, weighty and dubby, with foghorn tones and what sound like woodwind instrument samples teasing in a classy deep dubstep groove.

Review: Big return to the Deep Medi fold for Japan's Goth Trad, with his four track EP Babylon Fall given even further sheen by the presence of a certified Jah legend in Max Romeo! If that name doesn't elicit an "oh gosh" response then back to Music History night classes with you! The iconic Jamaican vocalist lines the title track with aplomb, giving the vintage dread step vibes of Trad's arrangement that extra air of authenticity. Elsewhere on this heavyweight double vinyl pressing, "Falling Leaf" and "Itinerant Priest" see the self described One Man Army serving up a couple of militant excursions through industrial sub bass dynamics - with the latter particularly unrelenting! "Sublimination" ends proceedings with some cross pollination between Detroit techno and vintage dubstep.

Review: Next up on Deep Medi Musik is an assured system smasher from K Man The Phantom, who was previously moonlighting on Mala's label as Dub Mechanics. After debuting his new alias with the Electro Magnetic Destroyer single last year, he's back in action with a double-header that should appeal to all those who love a searing mid-range buzz with their dubstep related material. "Blink" bounces on the most hyped-up of beats, positively shoving the killer lead riff around in all its mechanical magnificence, while "Power Drill" takes that slower, lurching approach to LFOing bump and grind, layering up the intensity only to melt away into a most haunting of mid-session breathers.

Propaine
Review: Deep Medi Musik introduce K Man with the machine-gunning Electro Magnetic Destroyer EP. In terms of sub-bass and gnarly musicality it rates up there with recent 12"s from familiar artists like Goth-Trad, Mala, Commodo and Kahn. The title-cut is an industrial-tinged and deep dubstep melee of warbly basslines, growling synths and beefy drums all wrapped up in a sinister rhythm. Then there's "Propaine", the perfect weapon to wake up the neighbours, and even though its groove is broken, it remains fluid and very duurty.
