Might Of The Trinity
Cat: ARTKL 034. Rel: 21 Aug 18
Might Of The Trinity (4:39)
Nightcrawler (4:44)
Review: New Zealand's reputation for proper system-primed dubstep continues to reach new levels as Akcept builds on his ever-growing discography with this Artikal debut. "Might Of The Trinity" is a rootsical bumper with a lavishly warm and bouncing bassline and sparse, splashing cymbals. "Nightcrawler" flips for a different schooling as we're treated to a shimmering metallic dub techno roller. Two sides, two styles; one dope release.

Nooo (5:09)
Glowz (5:50)
Stigma (4:46)
Review: Kenzo's Artikal rounds up another commanding year with decorated damagers across the 140-160 bass spectrum with a traditional 140 release courtesy of FKOF alumni Argo. "Nooo" is a creeped out stroll through a misty midnight wood, sounds echoing around you, prickling your skin and playing your mind. "Glowz" will turn you inside out as it tears your attention between the stretched and rolled subverted trappy percussion and its soul-smouldering subs. Finally "Stigma" is the actual soundtrack to the moments aliens come down and kidnap you in around 35 years time. Bon voyage.

Undubbed (4:42)
Medication (4:38)
Review: Both parties involved in this dispatch are on a serious roll right now... J Kenzo's Artikal continues to go from strength to strength with its boundary smelting visions while Causa's currency continues to rise as more and more established men co-sign him as a hot future prospect. In fact, as proved by the bulbous squidge of "Medication" and the Tubby horn flares and fissures of "Undubbed", Causa isn't just a hot future prospect... He's killing it in the present too. Serious dubstep business.

Take Control (feat Fox) (4:16)
Crack Chimes (5:03)
Review: Two heavily respected Manchester mandem collide on J:Kenzo's Artikal: Compa provides a fluid blend of trappy dub that lurks and lingers beneath Fox's instantly distinctive flow perfectly. Think My Nu Leng's "Masterplan" but much more pensive, stern and ultimately heavier. "Crack Chimes" hits with a little more edge thanks to the fractured chime riff and the superb 808 drums that fume beneath the melody with unabashed displays of muscle. A serious release with every party on top of their game.

Scrape EP (12")

Scrape (4:43)
Concrete (5:14)
Review: Felix Ruocco aka Deadcrow hails from The Hague, n the Netherlands, which is mostly associated with rip-snorting electro. He is a master of the dub, however, and now makes his debut on Artikal with a killer two tracker that has already been tearing up dubstep dancehalls. Opener "Scrape" has a real sense of character with its playful lead echoing a classic top line, while the reggae drums below are finished with a truly contemporary aesthetic. "Concrete" is all steel drums, wobbling low end and happy guitar riffs for sunny climes.

Petroglyphs EP
Cat: ARTKL 011. Rel: 28 Jan 14
Petroglyphs
Number Nine
Hot Sauce
Review: Elk Beats mainstay EshOne jumps over to the ever-impressive Artikal imprint for three wildly percussive slices of body-minded bass music. Deep but physical, this instantly grabs you with its energy and delivery; "Petroglyphs" lives up to its name and carves a rich groove out of sub bass stone with an industrial-strength sense of tribalism. "Number Nine" takes this demonstrative drama and develops it with space-gazing synth paranoia. "Hot Sauce" closes the show with a steppier, clickier riddim that develops more gradually and is guided by a trippy, warped tone throughout. Genuinely unique.

Shark Eye (4:10)
Asutoraru (5:59)
Review: Taking a savage bite out of 2018 before January is even out, Artikal don J:Kenzo strides forth with two show-stopping cuts. "Shark Eye" has all the killer instinct coded deep into sprung drums and restrained but ominous bass growls. "Asutoraru" on the flip drives with more of an upbeat feel thanks to its rolling percussion, staccato riff and pneumatic, soul-flattening kicks. We're going to need a bigger sub.

Intalek
Intalek (10")
Cat: ARTKL 019. Rel: 15 Dec 15
Intalek (5:48)
Revan (4:12)
Review: Following his heavyweight EP on Thirtyone, J:Kenzo continues the D&B flavour on his own Artikal imprint. While the jungle he peddled on Doc Scott's imprint was slippery and minimal, "Intalek" is much more rugged and dense with rattling breaks saturated in pulsating bass. Meanwhile on the B "Revan" takes us back to Kenzo's roots with a rolling, percussion-heavy dubstep jam that rolls with tonnes of energy. A really strong release to conclude a great year for Artikal.

Zbantu Shake (4:09)
Review: Hello is the serious burns unit? Yes it's Juno Records here, we've been in direct contact with J Kenzo's latest Artikal 12" and have lost several layers of skin. Get an ambulance right away you say? Just after we've listened to this a few more times... "Battlefield" twitches a ruddy sub that bounces around beneath big system horns and a strident energetic drum groove. "Zbantu Shake" is a much more stripped back stepper that's all wooden kicks, trippy flute flurries and ladles of thick treacle subs. Soundboy killing material.

Straight Defeat (Caspa remix) (4:20)
Straight Defeat (Jubei remix) (5:11)
Straight Defeat (instrumental) (5:36)
Review: Released last year, Kenzo and Collinjah laid down serious gully gospel on "Straight Defeat". Now time for two industrial strength remixes: a recently reinvigorated Caspa gets his war drum out for a greasy mechanical roller while Jubei ups the tempo ante with a tribal stepper that strips back the elements and lets Collinjah's vocal take the centre stage they require. Just like Kenzo's original, both versions mean serious dancefloor business.

J:Kenzo - "Straight Defeat" (feat Collinjah)
Perverse - "Subcontinent"
Biome - "Solstice"
Truth - "Questions"
Review: Here is the first of two 12" samplers preceding The Compilation, a self explanatory label collection from the Artikal crew which lays down a tasty marker for what to expect when the full 14 track release drops later this month. Naturally label co-founder J Kenzo leads the way with "Straight Defeat" which features the bubbling rap flow of Collinjah, but there's plenty more to sink your teeth into. Check the swinging minimalism and bulbous kicks of Biome's "Solstice" and Truth's chop-slapping stark design on "Questions".

J:Kenzo - "Intalek" (Resound remix) (5:50)
TMSV - "Sprite" (4:23)
Compa - "Lampin" (3:55)
Argo - "That Fresh" (5:46)
Review: As you'd perhaps expect, the second part (or "plate") of Artikal's The Architects Volume 1 compilation is full of deep and weighty treats. Fittingly, label boss J:Kenzo steps up first, offering Resound the chance to turn "Intallek" into a crunchy, snare-heavy revivalist jungle treat. TMSV take an altogether deeper route on "Sprite", peppering a tribal dubstep rhythm and moody sub-bass line with clandestine electronics and foreboding effects, before Compa slows things down via the melancholic bass science of "Lampin". Arguably best of all, though, is Argo's pleasingly melodious deep dubstep roller "That Fresh", which fittingly rounds off a fine EP.

We Are Many (6:59)
Boards Don't Hit Back (5:08)
Bewildered (7:56)
3rd World Cop (4:54)
Review: Legion is a new collaborative project featuring contributions from Boylan, Trends, P Jam and D.O.K, with the aim being to fuse elements of dubstep, grime, breaks and techno into fresh slabs of 140 BOM dancefloor pressure. As debuts go, We Are Many is certainly confident and quietly impressive. Our pick of a very strong bunch is opener 'We Are Many', a hot-stepping dancefloor stomper that peppers a tough beat with metallic percussion hits, warped sub-bass and industrial style electronic textures. That said, there's much to enjoy elsewhere across the EP, including deep dubstep wobbler 'Boards Don't Hit Back', the fuzzy mutant techno of 'Bewildered' and the heavy dubstep pressure of closing cut '3rd World Cup'.

Breakin (5:08)
Review: Last spotted on Artikal a little way back in December 2018 with the powerful "Systematic" EP, the deep trio LSN return to J:Kenzo's imprint with four more beguiling explorations. "AI" is loose, woozy and rolls with some fantastically off-grid breaks, "Spirit Dub" is a steppy odyssey waiting to crack heads while "Machine" is moody, muggy number with more loose kicks, wandering keytar leads and stacks for space for the space-bound vocals. Finally we hit the funkiest cut of the collection: "Breakin'". Dreamy, sleazy and guaranteed to take you to faraway places. Celebrate to automate.

Terror (4:44)
Industrial (6:14)
Review: Kosheen member Mark Morrison re-emerged last year with a new dubstep-focused alias, Markee Ledge. Having seen a new generation of DJs lap up his debut release on Tempa (and a couple of similarly impressive follow-up EPs), he's naturally keen to ram home his advantage. Hence this fine two track collaboration with Tempa stalwart Youngsta. The experienced duo hits the mark with "Terror", where unflinchingly heavy sub-bass and weighty analogue thrusts punch through atmospheric textures, paranoid vocal samples and a stripped-back but punchy rhythm track. The duo's love of dub is explored in greater detail on the more traditional dubstep shuffle of "Industrial", whose title was seemingly inspired by their choice of metallic background effects.

Cuatro (with JFO) (5:39)
Hemisphere (VIP) (5:02)
Review: Flipping and weaving between the 140 and d&b universes since day one, West country duo Mystic State return to J:Kenzo's Artikal with another rich and bewitching spread. "Tomahawk" kicks off with a disarming steel string twanging riff that cuts through any mix. The string theme continues on both the cave-dwelling echoes and eerie samples of "Competition" (with Kenzo himself) and the lonely strums and rolling percussion of "Cuatro" (with JFO) before "Hemisphere (VIP)" shuts down the 12" on a savage jungle tip. The flips and weaves continue...

Review: With one half in Canada, the half in the UK, and one foot in D&B and the other in dubstep, Mystic State have cover vast space both physically and creatively. Back on Artikal for the third time, the duo remind us of their skills and low end prowess once again. 'Gallows' kicks off with PAV4N taking the lead mapping out existence and deceit over the wavy 808s. Deepness ensues... Both 'Blinded' and 'Understand' are pulsating, hypnotic pieces of work laced with trippy percussive elements while 'Inner Sanctum' finishes the EP with a mystical flute-flexing twist. Stately.

Review: There's something to be said for a simple, nagging two-note riff. Stabby and infectious: cooked well and it's the perfect recipe for dancefloor mind magic. Take "Tesla", a simplistic, twisted pacer that penetrates the psyche with its liquid rhythm and relentless hook. "Timelapse", meanwhile, shows a whole other side to Perverse as we dive and glide on cosmic thermals, hanging onto loose guitar twangs and airy pads.

Review: The smoke hasn't cleared from TMSV's tempo-tearing drum hurters and Artikal have sparked up another stinker with Piezo. Echoing the unique groove and character he expressed with "Conquer" last year, "Sweat" rides another bumpy, bouncy sub arrangement that's laden with dense layers of funk. "Sugar" takes to a dark pasture with its singing drums, groaning foghorn bass and classical dub drum arrangement. Both one of a kind; no one is making bass music like Piezo right now.

Review: Following last year's "Raindance" EP, ex-Perverse man Pugilist returns with three more vital dubstep constructs. "Saturn" runs rings around the dance with its 'come in' vocal loop and machine flexed drums while "Outback" deep throats a 23rd century didgeridoo with impeccable bounce attitude. Finally "Solaris" closes the show with the highlight of the EP; a two-steppy space shuffler with a rolling break that's so overwhelmingly insistent it's physical. Benchmark business.

Fittest OF The Fittest (5:26)
Unity (7:24)
Review: New gen dubsmith Sabab is making a serious impression with his current slew of breakthrough Artikal releases. First came the crucial "Guidance" EP in November 2019, then came the equally essential "New Dawn" 12" in May 2020. Now, our heads fully turned and all eyes locked, comes another massive EP: "System Skank" takes us back to the original science while "Piercing White Light" is the late night bulldozer of the bunch. Meanwhile on the B: "Fittest Of The Fittest" flips between a big sample splash and the sizzliest bassline you'll find all month while "Unity" closes on a deep space dub voyage, skittering breaks breezing in the background and all. Fit.

Review: Destination San Francisco: Artikal snap-up Saule for his debut EP release. Long-time selector but an emerging producer, he's pushing all the right buttons here. Opener "Zeroes" is all flabby moving subs and shimmering theremin harmonics, "Baro" hits with more of an industrial twang in the percussive textures without losing any sense of warmth, trippiness or weirdness (watch out for the danked-out breakdown, though). The final shots are fired on "Pistola" as things take an even stranger turn; tones melt, drums turn into pistons and the sub wobble is off the chain. From "Zeroes" to heroes - this one is a keeper.

Review: Few new acts in dubstep are getting 140 heads hot under the collar quite as much as US trio Ternion Sound. Following heavily spun stinker sessions on the likes of Duploc and Dank N Dirty Dubz they crash land on J:Kenzo's Artikal with three mind-bending slabs of bass weight; "Parasite 6" is pure wobble gold, all bubbly and 07 flavoured with strong hints of Coki while "Loonz" continues the riff murkery over a slipperier rhythm under a graveyard grey cloud of bit decay. Finally "The Chamber" spins us into a seizure with its scattershot breaks, grainy cascades and FX so eerie they give themselves a fright. "Parasite" for sore eyes...

Review: Thelem releases don't come round as often as we'd like... But when they do, they never disappoint. "Haunted Harmonics" sums up the distinctive creativity and production benchmark instantly. Twisted FX and paranoid riffs, it's darkness o'clock and every one's watch has well and truly stopped. Both "Forces Of Nature" and "Obsessions", meanwhile, contribute towards the subby, 160 style jungle flavours that are currently bombarding the dance. Hungry for drums? Look no further than the savage drama of "Shottaz". Each cut charging a different corner of the dance, this is Thelem at his most extensive and accomplished. Well worth the wait.

Review: The second of two samplers from Artikal's inaugural compilation project - simply title The Compilation - this one features smouldering jams from some of the biggest names on the imprint... Thelem reverts from his current techno outings with a bleepy adventure into dubstep foundations, TMSV weaves a dense tribal web on "Scorpion", Skeptical adds a punctuated skippy rhythm and subtle dark growl to proceedings "Skavenger" while Sleeper concludes proceedings with the deeply trippy "Coxsone Dub". The Cosmonaut
Review: Tomas Roels' herbal homage "Haze" gets a very subtle VIP massage. A little polish has gone into the percussion and bass to give it that cheeky head nod to the heads who know the original. Elsewhere we hit "Gunman" and "The Cosmonaut". The former is a frenetic riddim jam with all manner of ricocheting percussive elements and off-beat funk. The latter is as deep and spacious as its title suggests thanks to weeping minor synths and an ominous groaning bass. Three kindly reminders that TMSV is killing it right now.

Elegy
Review: Destination Utrecht for Artikal's first release of 2015... TMSV sets up Kenzo's imprint for another fine year of underground dubstep with three riddim-heavy rollers, all primed for the dance. "Jackhammer" is a pneumatic slapper with its militant snares and high pressure atmospherics. "Guillotine" is as sharp as its title suggests as big ricochet drums and a paranoid hook do all the driving. We conclude with "Elegy". The heaviest track of the set, here we find ourselves back into heaving halfstep nasty time with a hook so barbed and brutal it could melt bones. Home is where the hurt is.
