Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

Review: Zha brings together element of dubstep, grime and trap on his latest 12" for the Naan crew. It is his first outing of the year following solid slabs of wax for the likes of White Peach and this label dating back to 2015. This one kicks off with 'Spice,' which has bass tones pinging about the mix with big hits, snatched vocal yelps and dusty drums all keeping you on your toes. 'Grief' is darker and dirtier thanks to the filthy great oscillation that rips up the swaggering rhythm and 'Harm' gets deep on some pensive pads and intoxicating melodic sounds. 'Two Rumours' closes down with sub so warm and cuddly it's like being hugged by a new duvet.

Review: White Peach maestro Zha is a regular member of the Naan label family and is back with another EP that follows up quickly from two previous efforts earlier in the year. As always he brings together grime, trap and dubstep into intoxication soundtracks that are full of mystery and intrigue. 'What Have You Done' kicks off with melancholic bass and moody melodic hooks then 'Let's Throw It All Away' further draws on Zha's heritage with another blend of plucked strings and lurching beats. 'Chup' ups the ante with more edgy and unsettling leads and 'Hiding Place' closes down with the most spacious sound of the lot.

Review: It's not often we pass on much trappy EDM to listeners at Juno, but Eprom is a special case, having made a name for himself for pushing the glossy post-dubstep trap style that made many artists like him famous. At the same time, Barclay Crenshaw (Claude VonStroke) is another name in the EDM world whose direction isn't quite the same as Eprom's, but nevertheless shares a space with the former artist for having also remixed Yung Skrrt's wilfully trashy hit 'McDonalds' of late. As both artists have dropped their respective cuts in many a DJ set all over the world, Skrrt's label DIRTYBIRD have now orchestrated a meeting of the two minds - not least to mention this juicy vinyl compilation of the two remixes.

Review: Mancunian Walton heads to Munich label Ilian Tape for anther of his cutting edge EPs. No stranger to esteemed labels like Hyperdub and Techtonic, this soundsmith once again draws on ambient, techno, bass and IDM across six immersive and cinematic tracks. The first two are largely wide open, cavernous, ambient affairs in which to allow your mind to wander. The inventive rhythms and powerful drums then arrive on 'Dread II' and remain throughout the skittish synth energy of 'Rewind Riddim' and automated factory floor sounds of 'Overload Destruction.' 'Unknown Territories' ends on a more far gazing vibe with pensive pads over scattered kicks.

Review: Wall In The Hole kicks off life with a first EP from an unbeknown producer of the same name. The label will be tapping into what some (us) are calling the great dubstep revival with a super minted, one time only pressing of two brilliantly juicy tunes. 'Monia' has bright synths and warm chords over nimble drums and bass that convey real weight, all topped off by a superb r&b vocal sample from the golden era. 'Reckless' on the flip is another one defined by its magnificent vocals sample, but this one has more broken beats and lively bass swings, low end wobble and wooden percussion.

Deep, beguiling, disarming; vibes on this black mirror menu range from the pure drama and stern soliloquy of Rider Shafique over 'Iceman' with Karnage and the tribal hypnosis of Sofa's 'Lost' (which is a really interesting departure from the jungle she is best known for) and plenty of dubby reflection rippling throughout. Review: Grime legends Trends, Boylan and Slimzee have made independent names for themselves over the years for their enduring contributions to the underground; the former two artists first cropped up on our radar after a string of horror-movie-themed grime bits which first proliferated virally on the internet. Slimzee, on the other hand, has been there from the beginning, co-founding the legendary Rinse FM pirate station among other things. Review: TMSV has the honour of closing out another solid year for the Deep Mehdi crew. His debut on the label gives a fine representation of his sound across a quartet of dark dubstep gems. 'The Glow' opens in eerie fashion, with low end oscillations and late night tones leaving long tails in their wake. 'Revenge' gets more tense and taught as it traps you in some edgy loops and 'Housing' layers up what sounds like broken glass, ominous drones and flashing synth work into something brilliantly. Her we find Teffa going deep on Subotage's fourth EP with a quartet of deliciously heavy steppers. 'Event Horizon' kick off with sparse streetwise swagger and low end oscillations, 'Turn On The Sound' has a characterful lead synth zipping about a desolate metropolis late at night and then 'Make It A Dub' has a classic dubstep feel with endless echo, frazzled synths and that lurching sense of low energy menace. Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.
If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Review: Sustrapperazzi is from the coastal town of Hastings and we last heard from him when he served up some nice hip-hop joints for the Ilian Beat Series with a nice 12" back in November 2021. He now dips into the world of deep dubstep, trap and grime with a new EP that comes in super limited numbers on Astral Black. 'Gospel Trappin' is exactly what it says in the title, which is a fine feat to pull off. There are also more traditional trap sounds with screwy bass and pitched-up vocals, booming 808s on the sample-heavy 'What's Wrong', and another treat cut full of yearning churchy chorals on 'Rationale.' Fresh for sure.

Review: Powerful hypnosis sessions from south UK artist Tom Woods AKA Sub Basics: Foundation Audio return after a short break with two stunning adventures. Both heavily groove-based, 'Tribal Flex' and 'YY' roll with percussive momentum, sitting somewhere between contemporary 140, timeless dub and universal dancefloor dynamics. The former is all about that bouncy kick and its sweltering tropical sound elements while 'YY' is on more of a mystical tip. Both flex hard, there's nothing basic about this operation whatsoever.

Review: The deep techno lovers at the Modern Hypnosis label have got Sub Basics on a new 12" that will lock you into a meditative state from the off. 'Offshore' is first up and ride son icy, minimal and gently broken techno loops that are fluffed out with deft synths and wispy pads. 'E443' is another super paired back sound with a quiet, late-night approach to floating and loopy techno. 'T441' has skittish rhythms and warped synths suspending you in mid-air while closer 'Lucid' (feat Traces) has a darker intensity to its lurching drums and pulsating synth lines.

Kicking off with 001, there's a very distinctive bite to this ghost's bark as he goes in on the heavier tear-out vibes with 'Shark Attack'. Deeper into his ocean we plunge as 'Quiet Storm' sucks us down into the sand and 'Sitting Bull' flips for an upbeat early 2000s breakbeat garage type of mission. Here comes another of their fine transmissions, ready and waiting to rattle your ribs and test your bowels. Review: On Tell Me, Skeptical capitalises on the freedom afforded by his own Rubi label by dialling back his established d&b sound and presenting a half-time trip into downtempo territory. That shouldn't be mistaken as a softening of his production chops, because there's still massive amounts of weight as he warps snarling bass around stark drums on 'Tapestry'. 'Atomic' goes further into a minimal, dubbed out sound with carefully executed low end growl which carries the torch from DMZ's earliest soundsystem meditations.

Review: Sir Hiss is a Bristol-based bass head who has had a fine recent outing on Idle Hands' City Road label 32A but now steps out with a three-track solo effort on Innamind. 'Uderzo' is some seriously weighty post-dubstep tackle with grinding and tough synth sequences over lurching drums with crisp hits up top. 'Sleep Paralysis' is a tripe mix of what feels like sound effects from a video game over icy beats with distant chord vamps adding some flesh to the bones. Last of all is 'Till The End' which features slow and precise drum loops under a hypnotic vocal wail.

Review: Well, it's been a long old while since we saw or heard the Semtek name. His last release on these pages was a full six years ago on his own always mighty fine Don't Be Afraid imprint with only one or two other EPs credited to him in the whole of the last decade. Rubadub have done well to coax him out of semi-retirement because these two tracks are hard: 'Denny Island' is a supple drum workout with darkness in the air but plenty of deep cosmic feels keeping things warm and welcoming. 'Catching Smoke' is another one defined by its rubbery busy bottom end and atmospheric synth work up top. Two heads-down back room beauties.

Review: Modern Hypnosis rolls onto its 11th release and it's another deliciously deep dubstep trip into sub-aquatic realms. 'Vintage' is patient and roomy, full of ricochetting hits and bulbous bass wobbles with fragments of vocal floating throughout the mix. 'Wistful' is a more kinetic cut with busy leads and energetic drums that are pent up with potential as a moody vocal adds extra tension. 'Be Humble' then comes on strong with crashing hits and the sort of ice-cold synths that cut through any dancefloor. Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Review: Hands up - this is our first brush with French artists Ourman, but we're already hooked. He has a clear love of UK sounds - dubstep, bass, broken beat - as they are the cornerstones of this new EP on UK label White Peach. He serves them all up with a deftness of melodic touch and plenty of cosmic aesthetics. 'Zengo' starts with screwing bass and sunny acoustic strings over a lurching beat, then 'Second Thoughts' is another hefty low end wobbler but with introspective melodies and bright flashes of colour. "Mindless Mills' is a darker UK stepper and 'Pocket Fruit' is the wispy, whimsical closer that will fit your heart with warmth and hope. A standout EP from a name we shall be keeping an eye on.

Review: Nova is a new signing for the Infernal Sounds crew and the artist has saved some of his best work for the occasion. He opens up with 'Bonafide,' a dark and heavy wobbler with a busy, oscillating low end that is full of menace while some subtle pitched up vocals hint at the rave. 'Single Fuse' is a noter one to loosen the bowels and melt your face with its lumpy, leggy rhythms and tripped out watery effects. It's 'Fivers' which then gets more tight and tense with an edgy synth hustling in the background while jittery snares keep you on edge up front. 'Intricacy' closes with a heavyweight bottom end and plenty of reverb to get lost in.

Review: Former Grid member and now ambient superstar Richard Norris delivers two new oracular divinations for his very own Group Mind label, the imprint formed in and after the COVID-19 lockdowns to help mindfully assuage the creeping anxieties of the age. A six-track 12" limited to just 30 copies - numbered and signed by the artist himself (move quick, hares) - these six tracks segue between dub and deep listening, fronting the bass and keeping percussive elements spread and panned. Best on the obverse is the A3, 'Mystery Dub', whose endlessly delayed stabs and cutoff conga samples well convey a vacuum-of-space vibe. Review: Skid Row is a carefully composed six-tracker of modern club and soundsystem oriented Bristol-influenced bass music. Believe it nor not, all basslines on this release are created by the same untypical hardware device, the Benidub DS71 Dub Siren. The tracks fuse grime and techno, picking up early reggae and 90s warehouse toasting - far from shiny algorithm optimization. 'Rictus' attunes the listeners to a playful, deeply swinging bassline embedded in reduced drums and comfy pads. 'Cockatrice' unfolds a technoid, almost trancelike impetus - dressed in broken beats and thoughtful vocal samples. 'Weedlot' sticks more to the funky side and cavorts with witty sonic effects, while the flip meets with 'Clodbuster': a conscious, truly demolishing badass tune in the spirit of only-the-rawest UK bass and grime; 'Suttree', finally, slows things down to a wide and wry space garnished with reggae horns and contemporary dance music samples. The record closes with growling drums, reverberant chords, tripping vocal snippets, and a sub-bass targeted on blurring your sight: 'Calico'.

Review: Swiss label Dub Colony Music Switzerland looks across Europe to Mob Killa from The Netherlands for this fourth release after fine early entries from Sentient and TCP. '70 Degrees' opens up with a sense of late night mystery and urban loneliness. 'Kill A Boo' brings some gentle piano tinkles over earth-shattering bass that has you lurching from one foot to the other. There is more duality to 'The Mansion' which has a hypotonic lead flute up top and more weighty bass down low. 'Elitist' shuts down with a further mix of elegant and heady melody and more physical drums.

Review: Hyperdub kick off the vinyl side to their ten-year celebrations with this weighty four-tracker from some of the leading lights from the label's story. Mala is in a strident mood with "Expected, Level 10" carrying through that extra touch of melody from the Mala In Cuba LP. DVA cuts loose with the leftfield scattershot groove of "Technical Difficulties", reveling in tonal experimentation and jagged rhythmic flair to a stunning end. Still locked into the sci-fi trap tangent that characterised Severant, Kuedo turns out the haunting "Mtzpn" and Helix pops up for a remix of Kode9's "Xingfu Lu" that strips down to bare essentials with a little starlit soul rubbed into the framework.

Review: LEA is back up to his activities as he comes crashing back onto planet Sneaker Social with three beautiful broken beat fusions. All sitting around that dubstep/techno/23rd century garage axis, the focus is on the groove, the subs and that lean, timeless funk he's made his signature. 'Sent West' sounds like a dark B-side of a 2005 CoOp joint, all mean and minimal but suddenly opening up into a jazzy flourish. 'Neurosis', meanwhile, subverts the two-step vibe for a spacious dub jam that could work across a multitude of genres before the brilliantly titled 'Dry Chat Wet Rag' closes off with a slo-mo jungle breakbeat fix. Moist.

A little deeper and more explorative than recent club-heavy dispatches he's been firing out lately, this EP takes us much deeper into his dubby, eerie psyche where cold, dystopian flavours and aesthetics rule the roost. Following where he left us with 'Foretold', 'Supernova' takes us back into the Berlin style of sizzling arpeggios and crisp futurism. It's backed up by plenty more heat from across the spectrum: 'Embrace' is a UK funky style twister, 'Joyless' nods at the Hyperdub style of UK bass with a strong nod to UKG while 'Daybreak' carries that cathedral-like euphoria up a notch to halftime pastures. Immense.

Review: We've been saying for a hot minute that a dubstep reveal is due, if not already here - even though, as is the case with any revival, the purists will say the sound never went away. We would like to submit as supporting evidence this reissue of a stone cold classic split 12" from 2009 from serious dubstep heavyweights Loofah and Coki. It came on the pioneering Deep Mehdi Musik label and some 14 years on still has plenty of dark late night allure and killer low end wobble. Two definitive tracks that we can't wait to start hearing out again on loud systems.

Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

Review: Deep Medi releases are always a cause for excitement, so it comes as no surprise that some of their earliest output is now being given the reissue treatment, nearly 20 years on from the label's inception. 'Kalawanji' is the infamous debut release by London producer Kromestar, with vocals by Cessman, and first came out on Deep Medi in 2006. Now on a limited green vinyl edition, to contrast to the original black, 'Kalawanji' and 'Surgery' are as raucous a pair of tracks as ever, recalling the period in which growly wobbles were just about taking over.

Review: Koma returns to the scene of the crime, finishing off what he started in 2018. First there was ENV 018 with massive tracks like 'Uncle Sullivan' and 'Moonlight'. Then came some very cheeky unauthorised versions in 2020 which most definitely weren't on Encrypted (the release was even called NOT-ENV to prove this!) Now he returns with ENV 018.1, another stately slab of wax comprising three smouldering 140 jams... The purring 'Dialtone', the militant march and thundering bumps of 'Flick' and finally the woozy swagger and eerie tension of 'Untitled'. Each one as heavy as the last, rumour has it he'll be back with an album. We can't wait.

Review: Last spotted on Strictly 140's Overseas VA LP, Spanish new-gen bass chef serves up his biggest dish to date on Subaltern. Linking up with longstanding baron XL One for the opener, 'Cronauer'. Unhurried, twinkling but laced with a bitter bass bite, it sets the dark dream tone. 'Piranha Plant' and 'Dorsia' see Kodama going solo. The former is a woozy arpeggiated charmer that sits on the hip-hop side of the beat spectrum. The latter hums with similar melancholy but much more of an edge to the drums and that ominous waspy bass tone. Graveyard grooves.

Review: Russian producer Kercha has already served up two superb EPs that cemented his reputation as a contemporary deep dubstep great, and now he backs it up with a standout first EP of 2021. His Mental Ballast EP comes on the label he is a firm part of, DNO Records, and is complete with his signature off-kilter rhythms. Opener 'Ignornants' has shimmering oscillations and deep, dark dub. Plenty of subtle samples flesh out the eerie groove including a clip of Russian maestro E. Ponasenkov. 'Analysis' is another gem, this time with Berlin artist Yoofee with plenty of purple flourishes. There is serious wobble to 'Tigers' that keeps you on edge and 'Acid' is a real spin out to close.

'Scurvy' dodge the limes in favour of a big squeezy accordion and what it lacks in vitamin C it definitely makes up for in weight. Elsewhere 'Sober' hits on more of an instrumental grime type of vibe, 'Stripey T-Shirt' brings out the squeeze boxes again for another woozy oddity while 'Cop Something' brings the whole experience to emotional conclusion. 'Madnuss 2 Long' creeps out at the front, unhurried but very focused. It's backed up by two more heavyweight flavours - 'Sunk Still' is straight up dub with a clinically obese sub bass melting all over the kicks while 'Horn Switch' hurls in a bucket of warm, squiggly alien funk. Exceptional.
