FRZR9000
Skullcrack
Review: A big, bad, bustling 12" from 16bit on the MTA imprint, with title track "FRZR9000" all skittering change-ups, screeching synths and killer vocal hooks. We're not sure if a track has ever been more aptly titled than B-Side offering "Skullcrack" (although 16bit has form with previous tracks entitled "The Tale Of The Exploding Fist" and "Chainsaw Calligraphy"). Sledgehammer bass hits reign down unrelenting blows before dropping into a decidedly cinematic breakdown (perfect for a frantic car chase!) All of this is wrapped in suitably garish artwork too.

Procedure (3:42)
Review: High pressure manoeuvres from Ilian Tapes on this mysterious and highly limited one-off run. 'Pulse' is a Samurai style slab of hybrid dub techno that's layered in grains and textures whole 'Procedure' flips the UK garage two-step vibe into a distorted, crunchy and physical groove that's not dissimilar to Tim Wright's early work on Mute. Once again, a very special release from Ilian... Blink and you'll miss it.

Al Andalus
Praise Dub
Review: IBR001, 'Al-Andalus' is a perfect example of the Mediterranean sound being developed by 23Hz + Numaestro. Starting with a vocal
sample from Moroccan music, the introduction is joined by an accordion type riff - curiously sounding not too dissimilar to Augusto Pablo's
distinctive melodica sound - which leads to the drop. Here a massive sub-bass with stabbing mid-frequencies enters the fray, which drives
the track along with skanking half-step beats which have plenty of spring-reverbed snares and slicing hats. The heavily effected sampled
voice is placed in the mix to give extra atmosphere whilst the opening riff leads us to a semi-drop which leaves just the sub before
proceeding to a false drop before the riff and sample are introduced once again which finally take the track into its homestretch. This track
oozes distinctive character and is guaranteed to smash the dancefloor as well as provide a deep meditative vibe. Road tested by Numaestro
on dubplate, it has levelled dances right across Spain and beyond, as well as being picked up by many of the DJs on Sub FM and figuring
in many of the top tens of DJs in the dubstep community over recent months. You are advised not to sleep on this one.
Starting with a vocal sample from Algerian music - a short introduction leads to the drop. Then a rampaging descending scale bass line
comes into play, set against tight stepping swinging beats. This track is built around the b-line and beats which are given junglesque details.
High strings and atmospheric fx, together with the vocal sample are spliced into the tune to give texture. The tune works through another drop
and then proceeds to a breakdown. After which the bass line is reversed - designed to surprise the dancefloor - before returning to the
original groove and final climax. This is an exercise in energetic bass n beats, referencing early jump -up jungle [without any of its
predictable excesses] and two-step swing - given the trademark 23Hz+Numaestro Mediterranean twist. A real goodtime club banger
- this tune has been a fixture in Numaestro's DJ sessions proving to be a crowd favourite.

Review: Man of the moment 2562 has been creating great waves this summer, with not only his last and best selling Tectonic 12" "Channel Two", but also under the guise of A Made Up Sound on his recent SubSolo limited edition. Adroitly straddling techno and dubstep audiences, and actually leading the ongoing cross-pollination of the scenes - both tracks on "Kameleon" are simply massive tunes for dancefloors everywhere.

Fakin Jacks (3 Stripes remix)
Cell Therapy (3 Stripes remix)
Bet I (3 Stripes remix)
Review: Two bros fresh from LA giving hip-hop acts a royal dubstep seeing too. Could life BE any better for 3 Stripes? We sincerely doubt it. Here we find them getting lively over a number of tried and test heaters. Wale's guitar-strumming "Bait" gets the most savage bass beasting with its stadium-splintering half-step naughtiness. B.O.B's "Bet I" comes a close second with the epic saw-tooth giving B.O.B's fast-swagger rhymes a little extra room to breath. With Saafir and Goodie Mob treats elsewhere on the release, this is the most comprehensive 3 Stripes release to date. Heavy.

Old Mount (4:44)
Bloody Mess (4:45)
Worms (4:34)
Review: 3WA returns to Foundation Audio with a monsters stepper that will loosen your bowels thanks to its serious low end wobble. The opener is the chief example of that with its stuttering kicks and prickly hits all underpinned by a warm, wubbing undercurrent of lovely bass. 'Old Mount' has another bottomlessly deep low end and lithe, shiny synths bring to mind an urban metropolis late at night and 'Bloody Mess' then cuts loose muffled vocals and slapping hits overlaid with manic melodies straight from an early computer game soundtrack. Closer 'Worms' slows things down to a predatory crawl.

Slimy (4:35)
Balaclava (4:50)
Review: Portugal's 3WA remains a key voice in the low end spectrum thanks to big tunes on Boka, Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone. The master of the big drop and all consuming bass is now snapped up by Subaltern for three more of his menacing workouts. 'Master Of Finances' demands you to revel in the lurching drum work and cavernous bass. 'Slimy' is even more poised and heavy, with steel plated hits and sci-fi twitches making for a cinematic soundscape. Closing out the EP is 'Balaclava,' a wonky and wobbling affair with oodles of reverb, mysterious leads and of course a weighty underside.

Review: Portugal's 3WA is next up on the long running UK label Boka on a special, limited edition 10" vinyl with a unique metallic sticker design. This outing follows big tunes for 3WA on the likes of Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone and serve sup more big bass drops and heavy rhythms. 'Sea Witch' is a cavernous tune with shards of lighting beaming down through it from above as flute leads hypnotise and the drums tumble ever further down below. 'Whale' then stutters on wobbly bass with watery chords up top adding to the sense of space.

Poverty (3:46)
Review: Foundation Audio team up two heavy hitters for this ode to heavy sound system music as a way of marking the label's 100th release. This limited edition hand-stamped 10" kicks off with the booming bass and snappy hits of 'Bumba' with its snaking leads and low end wub-wub recalling classic era dubstep. 'Poverty' then pairs some heavily treated vocals with glitchy, glassy sound effects, a rugged and weighty low end and plenty of futuristic and caustic textures. These are dread fuelled bombs designed to be played nice and loud.

Back Up
Review: 501, AKA, Jussi Leväsalmi, is a producer from Uusimaa, Finland who has been breaking down the boundaries of dubstep with some fresh and exciting releases for the likes of Red Volume Records, Subway Records, Off Road and Shiva Soundsystem. Now arriving on Z Audio, the talented producer delivers more streetwise rhythms and raw low end blended into bassline driven controlled mayhem on his latest release, "Beast Within." The title track sees distorted synths staggering along beneath tight beats and some tension-stirring melodies. B Side, "Back Up" is a slower, more breakbeat influenced rider that even includes a Spanish guitar melody!

Review: Some call him R.A.W, some call him Skanx, others call him 6Blocc. Here at Juno we call this LA low-end veteran a 'badman'. Flipping through the tempos like vinyls in a dusty crate and flexing his bass muscles with depth and dexterity on every release, he's renowned for flicking the style switch at the drop of a fractured amen. Declassified Dubplates acts as a cool potted CV with cuts like "Sensi" and "Booming In Your Jeep" show his breakneck full throttle style, cuts like "Babylon Coke" and "Distant Dream 2013" showing his lower nu-jungle skills and cuts like "Viaje Al Mictlan" and "Mexico Tenochtitlan" showcasing his mesmerisingly deep, dubby styles. An accomplished collection to say the least.

BMC - "Bro" (feat Slim Thug)
Review: FoulPlay are fighting fit with a fearsome four-pack right here. With label mainstays 6Blocc and Prolific pulling the punches, it's a knock-out session from the very first round. "Party All Day" takes a little EDM/hip-hop schmoozing and throws it down with and a trap-esque flare. "Get Real", meanwhile, is more you classic bro sound with a screaming bass and savage hooks. Elsewhere we find Tony Anthem and Axl Ender spitting fast-flow bars over a classic saw-tooth ("Rocking It") and BMC bashing off the haters over repetitive streams of toxic laser bass ("Bro").

Review: Fans of Dave Huismans might know him better by his 2562 alias, but this project is another thing altogether. An opportunity to pursue his interest in all things dubstep, he's previously released albums of songs all composed within one evening. This EP comes more fully formed though, and is right on the money. The infectious shuffle of title tune "Sun Touch" is as fresh as anything out there at the moment. The label boss's "Sun & Moon" is given some sub bass growl and menace by Distance on the A, while Seiji pops up with a garage-y interpretation on the flip that retains the straight up trance synths and chipmunk vocals!

Vortex Field
Review: Following in the footsteps of fellow Russians Bop and Enei, Abstract Elements get freaky on a deep and minimal tip with an EP that gets heavier track by track. We kick off with the eerie muffled pastures of the lead track "Fourth Dimension", a cut so sub-heavy it broke two Juno speakers when we tested it in the office. "Apocalypse" drives deeper into tech territories with precise kicks, spine-shuddering atmospherics and a percussive hook that develops with stealth. "Vortex Field" finishes the set with paranoid urgency. Filmic, dramatic and mechanically funky, it's the perfect EP finale.

Review: Visionist's Lost Codes label gets rebooted as a new sublabel to PAN, laying down some foundations ahead of the UK artist's long-mooted debut album for the Berlin label. Overseen by both Visionist and PAN founder Bill Kouligas, the first Codes release brings together two artists who have previously excelled on Lost Codes in Acre and Filter Dread. Working together for the first time, the six track Interference suggests this is a deadly partnership that should be given the platform to express itself further. Degraded 8bit sounds permeate opener "Drumz34" which comes across like early Actress played at the wrong speed, whilst sickeningly good sub bass is deployed on "Flash Speed" and "Trashed" is a superb exercise in slack jawed drum programming. Some cavernous bass kicks on this one. "Life" is wonderfully slippery in full flow, whilst "Unknown" is up there with Gramrcy's "Ruffian" in the heavyweight contenders of the year stakes.

Und U BOat
Review: Werk Discs chief Actress - aka Darren Cunningham - drops the breathtaking Machine & Voice EP ahead of a full album release slated for May. Despite a relative paucity of releases in recent years, 2010 is set to be a watershed for Cunningham. A remix of Joy Orbison’s recent single "The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow" on Will Saul’s Aus Music, kicked things off. Now within a space of a fornight he’s dropped this EP, on Instra:mental's Nonplus imprint, and another on his own label.  And of course Splaszh, his second full length album, continues to loom tantilisingly on the horizon.

Machine & Voice sees Actress pulls off his usual trick of drawing on many disparate influences - from dubstep to techno to drum & bass -  yet managing to make his sound stand alone. In keeping with the label, these three tracks are of a more experimental/bass-driven bent, although such an ambiguous description hardly does it justice. Whatever you want to call it, the fact is Actress now occupies a space in electronic music that no one else can touch. Do not miss this EP.

Minutes Of Funk
Review: 3024's pilfering of West Country talent continues unabated with the rather busy of late Julio Bashmore being swiftly followed by the equally prolific Addison Groove in releasing essential club tackle for Martyn's imprint. Anyone who has indulged in Mr T Williams' recent output for Swamp81 or Tectonic will have an inkling of the current Addison Groove sonic flex, all tightly wound post circa 130bpm 808 patterns, though "It's Got Me" is truly characterised by the disparate sensation of woozy melodic flourishes being diced by the rhythmic swagger. Flipside you get future funk electro odyssey of "Minutes Of Funk" with swathes of purple textures allowed to breath beneath a perma bouncy bass thrust. The midway drop into a bumping house pattern will grab you every time!

Make Um Bounce
Review: In between brief dalliances with Swamp81 and 3024, Addison Groove shows some hometown support with this essential twelve for Pinch's Tectonic imprint. "This Is It" could only come from the sonic palette of Tony Williams, with steppy juke heavy 808 riddims ripping out of the speaker cones at 138bpm amidst a barrage of expertly spliced vocals and rubbery rave bleeps. Amidst the rowdiness, there's a distinct progression to the track which makes it a worthy successor to last year's triumphant "Footcrab". "Make Um Bounce" slips down the tempo scale a notch or two for a more standard 4x4 flex that's brimming with enough bass and rasping percussion to find a place amidst Jackmaster's forthcoming excellent mix for Fabric. Big tip!

Review: Following his soundtrack to the Roki game and appearances on the likes of Monstercat, Aether returns to his spiritual home Fent Plates for the first time since 2017. The wait has of course been worth it as 'Fragments' takes us back to the Scottish deepsmith's finest elements; stirring, poignant chords, foggy, disarming textures long lingering-but-tender notes. From the opening airy pads and trembling keys of 'Luna Awaits' to the final slo-mo plod and echo of the finale 'Worlds Apart', it's Aether doing what he does best; conjuring up emotions you didn't even know you were feeling while making you feel like you're in an impenetrable bubble. Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Since first dropping on wax five years ago, Aether's Fent Plates debut, Viraha, has become something of an in-demand EP online - hence this timely reissue. We'd argue that it remains the Scottish producer's most potent and musically detailed work, wrapping atmospheric and alluring melodic elements - think twinkling, melancholic piano motifs, manipulated female vocal samples and emotive chords - around the deepest of dubstep beats, head-nodding trip-hop grooves and hazy aural textures. Throw in a couple of fine ambient tracks and you have a brilliantly blissful, contemplative EP that's tailor-made for sofa-bound post-club plays and escapist afternoon daydreaming.

Lead tune "Blen" won't disappoint at all, a heavy old-school grime beat with an uptempo but still laid back vocal, it's an absolute joy. It would be fair to say he's in fine form, too, serving up a double-EP of melodious, atmospheric cuts that pepper the deepest of dubstep riddims with a variety of smoky samples, blissful lead lines and becalmed chords. For dancefloor play, the highlight is undoubtedly "So I Smoke", where echoing female vocal snippets bounce above dub bass and punchy drums, though "Deer (Dub)" - a rumbling club revision of included ambient cut "Deer" - is similarly impressive. Highlights elsewhere across the EP include the trip-hop style stoned beats of "Dragon Love" and the wind chimes-sporting bliss of "Above".

Pyramid Lake
Black Ink
Review: Otherwise known as Rob McAndrews, former James Blake collaborator Airhead is fast becoming one of the most interesting producers on the R&S roster since Blake's movement to more mainstream concerns. Taking a more explicitly rhythmic direction than previous release which concentrated on lush acoustic textures, "Pyramid Lake" combines rapidfire percussion, breathy vocal samples and lo-fi VHS textures to create the most unlikely club banger you'll hear this year. "Black Ink" meanwhile sounds like a maelstrom of kickdrums tumbling up and down a rubber staircase with stray hi-hats and handclaps thrown into the mix. Undeniably one of the best R&S cuts this year.

Dreader Than Dread (5:04)
Howl (4:46)
Review: Three releases deep, each one an absolute peach: Youngsta's Sentry label has been total fire so far. Kicking off with dBridge, then Nomine, now the label take us to New Zealand for its third outing as Akcept takes the controls and proceeds to drive on both sides of the road; "Dreader Than Dread" is an epic bounce back 10 years with its brazenly funk horns and rolling chubby bass groove while "Howl" is a lot more spaced out, starker, late night jam with a fatty sub line that should come with a health warning. Stay alert.
