Review: Deep dubstep explorations are very much back in fashion of late. LDH is a new label that is tapping into that world and now welcomes Argo for a quartet of emotive new cuts that also do plenty of damage when played nice and loud on the right sound system. 'Desaccord' is a tender one with a pained harmonic lead and jittery beats, 'Gramz' has grime vocals over the crisp, glitchy, tech-y drum work and 'Cortizoid' invites you to sink deep into a wobbly synth and stuttering kicks. 'Transmitted' is a more suspensory sound with ambient cosmic pads that are warm and cuddly.

Review: Ilian Tape have been sympathetic to the sound of UK bass for some time now, but this new drop from Atrice leans even further into the pervading energy of dubstep as a source of club pressure. The Swiss duo first appeared on Ilian Tape with Q back in 2021, and they're sounding stronger than ever on this latest missive. If 'Multiplex' brings a cybernetic sheen to headsy 140, then 'Is It Warm' does similar work with techy d&b as the pair dice up breakbeats with precision and drape exquisite, shimmering pads over the ruffness. There's also space for crafty techno propulsion on 'Broke' and high-tempo trippiness on '83 Steps', making this a versatile, consistently brilliant release from a rising force in the scene.

Review: Blind Prophet & Ishan Sound come together for their first pan-atlantic collaboration here in what is a fine return to the ZamZam label. The pair first met in Portland in 2019 and so it's good to finally have some sounds to get stuck into from their meeting of minds. 'The Labyrinth' kicks off with hefty and stepping drum rhythms that are overlaid by bright synth lines and mystic flutes. The interloping melodies and a menacing bassline finish it in style. On the flip, things get much more dark with 'Minotaur Dub' which is a shadowy world of refracting drums and oodles of reverb and echo. There is a predatory sense to the rhythm that never lets up as fizzing bass pries every deep into the dead of night.

Review: Peaky Beats is a great name for a label that serves up such irresistible house and garage jams as it has so far over its first eight EPs. This ninth outing is no less desirable, coming from the in house production team in collaboration with Breakfake. 'Life In Stereo' hits a perfect note between kinetic drums and soulful, jazzy chords deigned to melt the heart. 'Rat City' is more filthy - a warped bassline screws about beneath more sleazy broken beats. 'Chapel Town' brings low end dubstep wobble to the party and 'Dub The Acid' is another filthy dirty skanker with echoing hits and mutant bass.

Review: The deep dubstep revival continues to roll on and turn out ever more crucial sounds from the underground and back streets. Bukkha's latest for Innamind Recordings is a perfect case in point - it's primed and ready to blow out the basins of any system it is played on. Opener 'Deliverance' has some serious weight to it while the low-end wobbles keep things rolling under crispy, long tailed hits and hissing synth mystery. On the flip is 'The Time Is Now" (feat DPRNDRP)', a more crunchy and broken beat overlaid with squealing synth motifs and bad man vocalisations.

Review: Burial drops his latest two-tracker on XL, two chaotic breakbeat balancing acts firmly rooted in rushy UK 'ardkore and day-glo 80s freestyle respectively. The A is a nail-biting, cavernous tweak out, which Burial pipes out into the darkest, most paranoid corners of the rave, exhuming frazzled dancers and inducing a queasy euphoria that any seasoned hedonists will recognise all too well. 'Boy Sent From Above', on the other hand seems to chart the passage of an obsessive, icy winter graff mission, with tinny drum machines, saccharine squarewave arpeggio hooks and spraycan samples harking back to the heyday of B-Boy electro, Miami freestyle and NYC breaking with devastating efficacy, albeit seen through Burial's unmistakeable misty-eyed LDN gauze; chrome and black over day-glo. Dreamfear marks yet another welcome switch up in Burial's artistic direction, and makes for one of the most evocative, moving and transporting entries in his much pored-over catalogue.

Review: Clearlight is a Belgian producer of deep and experimental dubstep, with the 'experimental' label shining especially brightly on this latest EP for DNO. Through rich construction of atmosphere and intricate percussion, Clearlight evokes early Deep Heads on the likes of 'Super Strong' and 'Heavy Feet', harking back to the original dubsteppers' emphasis on style and immersion. The B-sider 'Spinning Head' is a special highlight, minimal on the low-end while remaining no less impactful in its use of a 16th note, midrange wobble.

Review: Pond Life Party revisit the work of Baseplate and Danny Dorito here with a remix EP that is pressed up on special gold vinyl. After the brief but scene-setting 90 second opener 'Eagle' (intro skit - HMP Notts VIP), the same cut gets an Epoch remix that is all about the bulbous and gloopy bassline wobble and tight bars up top. 'Eagle' (main Phase remix) is more atmospheric and stripped back with a skeletal rhythm slowly percolating up from below to lift you off your feet then last of all is the Modelle remix which ups the lurch of the drums and layers in percussive details and heavy hist next to screwy synths.

Review: Deep Medi releases are always a cause for excitement, so it comes as no surprise that some of their earliest output is now being given the reissue treatment, nearly 20 years on from the label's inception. 'Kalawanji' is the infamous debut release by London producer Kromestar, with vocals by Cessman, and first came out on Deep Medi in 2006. Now on a limited green vinyl edition, to contrast to the original black, 'Kalawanji' and 'Surgery' are as raucous a pair of tracks as ever, recalling the period in which growly wobbles were just about taking over.

Review: LEA is back up to his activities as he comes crashing back onto planet Sneaker Social with three beautiful broken beat fusions. All sitting around that dubstep/techno/23rd century garage axis, the focus is on the groove, the subs and that lean, timeless funk he's made his signature. 'Sent West' sounds like a dark B-side of a 2005 CoOp joint, all mean and minimal but suddenly opening up into a jazzy flourish. Review: Skid Row is a carefully composed six-tracker of modern club and soundsystem oriented Bristol-influenced bass music. Believe it nor not, all basslines on this release are created by the same untypical hardware device, the Benidub DS71 Dub Siren. The tracks fuse grime and techno, picking up early reggae and 90s warehouse toasting - far from shiny algorithm optimization. 'Rictus' attunes the listeners to a playful, deeply swinging bassline embedded in reduced drums and comfy pads. 'Cockatrice' unfolds a technoid, almost trancelike impetus - dressed in broken beats and thoughtful vocal samples. 'Weedlot' sticks more to the funky side and cavorts with witty sonic effects, while the flip meets with 'Clodbuster': a conscious, truly demolishing badass tune in the spirit of only-the-rawest UK bass and grime; 'Suttree', finally, slows things down to a wide and wry space garnished with reggae horns and contemporary dance music samples. The record closes with growling drums, reverberant chords, tripping vocal snippets, and a sub-bass targeted on blurring your sight: 'Calico'.

Review: Former Grid member and now ambient superstar Richard Norris delivers two new oracular divinations for his very own Group Mind label, the imprint formed in and after the COVID-19 lockdowns to help mindfully assuage the creeping anxieties of the age. A six-track 12" limited to just 30 copies - numbered and signed by the artist himself (move quick, hares) - these six tracks segue between dub and deep listening, fronting the bass and keeping percussive elements spread and panned. Best on the obverse is the A3, 'Mystery Dub', whose endlessly delayed stabs and cutoff conga samples well convey a vacuum-of-space vibe. Review: Hands up - this is our first brush with French artists Ourman, but we're already hooked. He has a clear love of UK sounds - dubstep, bass, broken beat - as they are the cornerstones of this new EP on UK label White Peach. He serves them all up with a deftness of melodic touch and plenty of cosmic aesthetics. 'Zengo' starts with screwing bass and sunny acoustic strings over a lurching beat, then 'Second Thoughts' is another hefty low end wobbler but with introspective melodies and bright flashes of colour. "Mindless Mills' is a darker UK stepper and 'Pocket Fruit' is the wispy, whimsical closer that will fit your heart with warmth and hope. A standout EP from a name we shall be keeping an eye on.

Review: Modern Hypnosis rolls onto its 11th release and it's another deliciously deep dubstep trip into sub-aquatic realms. 'Vintage' is patient and roomy, full of ricochetting hits and bulbous bass wobbles with fragments of vocal floating throughout the mix. 'Wistful' is a more kinetic cut with busy leads and energetic drums that are pent up with potential as a moody vocal adds extra tension. 'Be Humble' then comes on strong with crashing hits and the sort of ice-cold synths that cut through any dancefloor. Review: Well, it's been a long old while since we saw or heard the Semtek name. His last release on these pages was a full six years ago on his own always mighty fine Don't Be Afraid imprint with only one or two other EPs credited to him in the whole of the last decade. Rubadub have done well to coax him out of semi-retirement because these two tracks are hard: 'Denny Island' is a supple drum workout with darkness in the air but plenty of deep cosmic feels keeping things warm and welcoming. 'Catching Smoke' is another one defined by its rubbery busy bottom end and atmospheric synth work up top. Two heads-down back room beauties.

Review: Sir Hiss is a Bristol-based bass head who has had a fine recent outing on Idle Hands' City Road label 32A but now steps out with a three-track solo effort on Innamind. 'Uderzo' is some seriously weighty post-dubstep tackle with grinding and tough synth sequences over lurching drums with crisp hits up top. 'Sleep Paralysis' is a tripe mix of what feels like sound effects from a video game over icy beats with distant chord vamps adding some flesh to the bones. Review: On Tell Me, Skeptical capitalises on the freedom afforded by his own Rubi label by dialling back his established d&b sound and presenting a half-time trip into downtempo territory. That shouldn't be mistaken as a softening of his production chops, because there's still massive amounts of weight as he warps snarling bass around stark drums on 'Tapestry'. 'Atomic' goes further into a minimal, dubbed out sound with carefully executed low end growl which carries the torch from DMZ's earliest soundsystem meditations.

Review: The deep techno lovers at the Modern Hypnosis label have got Sub Basics on a new 12" that will lock you into a meditative state from the off. 'Offshore' is first up and ride son icy, minimal and gently broken techno loops that are fluffed out with deft synths and wispy pads. 'E443' is another super paired back sound with a quiet, late-night approach to floating and loopy techno. 'T441' has skittish rhythms and warped synths suspending you in mid-air while closer 'Lucid' (feat Traces) has a darker intensity to its lurching drums and pulsating synth lines.

Review: We're glad that plenty of artists seem to be back making dubstep again - purists will say it never went away but the spotlight sure did move on after that initial explosion 15-plus years ago. Her we find Teffa going deep on Subotage's fourth EP with a quartet of deliciously heavy steppers. 'Event Horizon' kick off with sparse streetwise swagger and low end oscillations, 'Turn On The Sound' has a characterful lead synth zipping about a desolate metropolis late at night and then 'Make It A Dub' has a classic dubstep feel with endless echo, frazzled synths and that lurching sense of low energy menace. A Split remix closes out a vital EP.

Review: Grime legends Trends, Boylan and Slimzee have made independent names for themselves over the years for their enduring contributions to the underground; the former two artists first cropped up on our radar after a string of horror-movie-themed grime bits which first proliferated virally on the internet. Slimzee, on the other hand, has been there from the beginning, co-founding the legendary Rinse FM pirate station among other things. We can't contain our excitement for this fresh, psychotic release for Etch's Sneaker Social Club; returning to the trio's penchant for oppressively trappy instrumentals, there are newer explorations in breakstep and garage, fleshing out the many teeth-gritted possibilities of the eight-bar rhythm. Haunting, atrophied sonic skeletons from a dream trio.

If this is anything to go by (or the inaugural one back in 2018) then hell has a ruddy sick soundtrack. Deep, beguiling, disarming; vibes on this black mirror menu range from the pure drama and stern soliloquy of Rider Shafique over 'Iceman' with Karnage and the tribal hypnosis of Sofa's 'Lost' (which is a really interesting departure from the jungle she is best known for) and plenty of dubby reflection rippling throughout. See you on the dark side.

Review: Wall In The Hole kicks off life with a first EP from an unbeknown producer of the same name. The label will be tapping into what some (us) are calling the great dubstep revival with a super minted, one time only pressing of two brilliantly juicy tunes. 'Monia' has bright synths and warm chords over nimble drums and bass that convey real weight, all topped off by a superb r&b vocal sample from the golden era. 'Reckless' on the flip is another one defined by its magnificent vocals sample, but this one has more broken beats and lively bass swings, low end wobble and wooden percussion.

Review: Grime might now be one of the biggest sounds in the UK music scene, but it arguably might never have been without the much earlier work of scene forefather Dizzee Rascal. The Londoner broke through just after the turn of the millennium and onto the international stage with his in-your-face bars, mashed-up dance sounds and big samples. Quite possibly his best work is Boy In Da Corner, the stunning Mercury Prize winning long player on XL that is now 20 years young. It gets a special reissue for the occasion with all the big ones like 'Fix Up, Look Sharp' present and correct, as well as a load of fine instrumentals.

Review: EVA808 has used this new album to launch her own new label Gleb and a fine statement it is too across four sides of gatefold clear vinyl to "represent the ice that inspires" the music. The artist born Eva Johannsdottir hails from Iceland and has a signature sound that she hopes conveys a story of "being different." The album is rich and cinematic in design with bass driven low ends and dark, boorish synth moods up top. It's cold yet warm, icy yet inviting and comes after many years of Johannsdottir being a key part of the drum & bass underground having first started outpacing grime and dubstep in 2011.

Review: Ghetts is undoubtedly amongst the top tier of British MCs - a grime legend famed for being a genuinely dextrous lyricist. As On Purpose, With Purpose proves, he's also an artist whose output has evolved considerably since he emerged in the late 2000s. Review: Oskar Allen and Luke Barnett are Glume & Phossa, but beyond that we dot know much about them, Musically this superb album shows that they bridge the gap between electronica, trap and hip-hop with plenty of slick and sleek minimal rhythms and glistening synths. There's a psychedelic edge to these sounds - hyper real melodies and warped vocal sounds - that makes it otherworldly and futuristic at the same tie as having the sort of nostalgic chords that remind you of a time you probably never actually lived. Brilliant stuff for either home listening or the dance floor.

Review: It might come as a surprise that dubstep favourites Kahn & Neek have only just gotten round to releasing their debut album, but their repertoire has spoken for itself over the years, so this is more than deserved. Translating from the Latin phrase "the wolf and the bear", Lupus et Ursus draws heavily on the image of the pair's occupation of the top of their very own hierarchy; the carnal apex predators of bass music. That in mind, the music is just as alarming, as if we were mere bunny rabbits at their mercy, as a barrage of complex, earthen, and arid grime and dubstep is flung our way, with all the favourite MCs - Rider Shafique, Riko Dan, Flowdan, Mez - joining in for a due exchange of bars.
