  1. Guidance (5:31)
Review: If you've ever heard Jah Shaka play, there's a fair chance he will have dropped 'Guidance'; the Lee 'Scratch' Perry-produced cut has been a staple in his sets off dubplate since the early 1980s. While the track was featured on the Black Ark Players' 1980 album Black Ark In Dub, this special Record Store Day picture disc is the first time it has come out as a single. The track itself is naturally superb - a genuine vintage Lee Perry dub with all of the ingredients you'd expect from the eccentric producer - and the record itself, which sports images taken from the walls of the infamous studio, is a thing of genuine beauty.

Cat: ZAMZAM 80. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hiss (4:18)
  2. Palms (4:10)
Review: ZAMZAM goes bang bang once again as the dutty dubstep label hits release number 80. Cause keeps it utterly filthy on the a-side with 'Hiss,' a heavyweight nobler with a menacing bassline that's so fat it wiggles as it walks. Crashing hits and sci-fi synth motifs make this a most astral crawler. 'Palms' has whirring synths and a bassline curried oceans below. Freaky vocal sounds are haunting and dark and add tension to the track as it prowls along through an utter wasteland. Atmospheric stuff, to be sure.

  6. Lightning Skank (dub 2) (3:41)
Review: Some classic UK digital dub and reggae business here, as Culture Freeman and the Bush Chemists collective delve into their collective archives and retrieve a bunch of vintage gems from the 1990s. Side A is all about 'Armagideon', a typically weighty, Melodica-heavy number featuring some superb toasting from mic man Freeman. The accompanying dubs are especially potent, with the sheer sub-weight of the 'Dub 2' version being particularly alluring. Over on side B, Bush Chemists go solo on 1994 gem 'Lightning Skank', a synthesizer and drum machine heavy digi-dub roller blessed with some snaking electronic melodies and delay trails aplenty. It too comes backed with two heavy, stripped-back dub revisions.

  2. Sky Is The Limit (version) (3:45)
Review: Sagete is an Italian roots label making moves and now keeps rolling with a second real, this time from Daddy Freddy on tidy 7". His aggy vocal delivery makes for a real jump up beat, with angst ridden rhymes over roots dancehall beats. It feels utterly contemporary with the pixel perfect bass and laser-like synths firing over the face of the track. As energetic and confrontational as that one is, the dub workout on the flip is no less raw and visceral, with the production really getting your attention from the off.

Review: If you're looking for an EP packed to the rafters with a mixture of attractive digi-reggae vocal numbers and soundsystem-bothering dubs, we'd highly recommend this 12" from leading Dutch crew King Shiloh. What's on offer is a sextet of 'versions' based around the same steppers-tinged digi-dub riddim from Dub Creator (instrumental versions of which are tagged on to the end of each side of the record). The riddim itself is a good one, with a stabbing bassline, picturesque piano stabs, flanged guitars and some unusual instrumental choices. The songs built on this solid foundation are all superb, with our picks of the bunch being Empress Black Omolo's soulful and positive, 'Love is the Weapon' and the cheeriness of Discyple's surprisingly accordion-heavy 'All Things Possible'.

  1. Dixie Peach - "Never Give Up Jah" (3:53)
  2. Dub Hunters - "Never Give Up Jah" (Melodica version) (3:53)
Review: The second release on the fledgling Dub Hunters label finds the eponymous artistic duo of Marco Marastoni and Michele Iemmi link up with Dixie Peach. All instruments except the horns and kete drum were played by Dub Hunters themselves, and the pair also mixed it at Landscape Studio, so you get a fulsome Dub Hunters experience for this one for sure. It's fine mix of tradition and futurism, history and invention with nice congas, natty riffs and wobbling bass and drum combos. A lush harmonica version on the flip seals the deal.

Review: Dreadwise makes its debut in the vinyl world with a super limited, super high quality 10" that is inspired by the sounds of West Africa as well as the African diaspora as a whole. It's lead by some fantastic Kora playing from UK musician Jude Winwood which lends it a truly authentic feel, as do the host of other traditional West African Instruments which colour its swaggering, deep cut grooves. 'Ngoni Dub' is an airy, upbeat opener with cavernous drums and subtle fills, while 'Kora Dub' is another sunny affair with playful melodies and a low sling bass line that tumbles ever deeper.

Review: This fantastic inaugural EP on Dende Sound finds the crew work together with MC Trooper for the first time. His red hot lyrical fire torches Bambaman's powerful riddims and aches to be played cloud on a serious sound system. The collaboration came together during many late night sessions in Brighton and has a positive, uplifting vibe of the sort we all need right now. The flip finds Bambaman serving up a more serious and militant dub style with plenty of echoes of classic melodica roots. 'Training Day' then rounds out the package with some future classic sounds in both original and dub format.

Review: Rough Signal Records have finally snapped up a man who has released many big tunes, most of which get heavy support from the famous King Shiloh sound system amongst many others. Mighty Profit is a big producer with a big sound and he hails from Italy, which is in something of a dub sweet spot right now. This tune is a special collaboration work from Rough Signal Records JPN and fuses his exclusive synth with Dub Kazman's signature bass line, some sick drums and percussion. The tune takes its name from the tumultuous times in which we find ourselves and sure provides some respite.

Review: Alchemy serve up their 12th limited edition 7" and it is a real belter. On the first side you'll find 'Resilience,' a melodica version over a 90's inspired steppers riddim. UK dub don Chazbo plays the first verse and then hands over to the Japanese melodica player Yuuri Bamboo for the second. Both have unique styles that shine through and make this a nice and mystical dub with lots to lose yourself in. On the flip is a more stripped down and dubbed out version that brings early morning vibes and was mixed live in analogue by Ojah at his studio.

UV Dub (7")
Cat: MYSTB 003. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Points (4:20)
  2. UV Dub (4:56)
Review: The Mystery Booms crew have put together a limited run of what they call 'modern weird rhythms' from the Prince Stoner. 'Points' is filled with intrigue - its stuttering drums and bass lurching from one point to the next while heavily treated vocals appear and disappear like ghostly apparitions in the dark. It's warm and inviting but unsettling at the same time. On the flip, 'UV Dub' has a killer bassline waaaay down low, then icy hi hats up top and is all finished off with warped, mind melting pads. These are two fresh, killer beats for sure, however you want to categorise them.

Review: Italian label Bababoom serve up this brand new and essential roots 12" featuring vocalist and musician Ramon Judah, Roots Defender Horns and Dub Defender. It kicks off with 'Freedom Chant', a pained vocal riding over prickly dub beats that open mind and heart. 'Horns Of Freedom' then repurposes the groove and layers up some sultry trumpets to bring a different mood. 'Freedom Rock' then takes the tune into a lovers rock world with earthy and organic guitar plucking and 'Dub For Freedom' is the nice rolling closer, with fat drums and flabby bass inviting you in deep.

Review: Long-serving duo Reality Souljahs have worked with a wide range of producers over the years, though this seven-inch single still marks the first time they've teamed up with UK scene veteran Steve Mosco AKA Jah Warrior. He's at the controls on 'Please Jah Help Me', a positive, synth-and-drum-machine-heavy number in which the duo's effortlessly soulful, life-affirming vocals and ragga style raps rise above a lightly dubbed-out backing track. Mosco gives his own take on the track on the flip, delivering an especially weighty, delay-laden dub interpretation full of echoing drum hits, super-sized sub-bass and ricocheting piano stabs.

  2. The Inn House Crew - "Digilew Riddim" (3:27)
Review: Lewis M is at the controls for all-star studio band the Inn House Crew's latest must-check collaboration with veteran Jamaican vocalist Winston Reedy. He's in fine form on 'World Crisis 2020', a classic, Black Ark-era Lee 'Scratch' Perry style number in which Reedy delivers an accurate if dread-filled commentary on current global events over a superb, retro-futurist dub reggae riddim. That Inn-House crew backing, which is peppered with neat musical details such as jazzy guitar solos and hazy Melodica lines, is showcased in full on the similarly essential, flipside 'Digilew Riddim' version.

  4. Dubplate Cut 4 (3:29)
Review: With their Tweeter Box series of limited-edition EPs, Purple Audio is doing a great job in gathering together obscure vocal reggae and dub cuts from the late 1970s and '80s. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing on this third volume. Up first is the seven-minute 'Disco Mix' of 'Mount Zion' by Roots Wanda (otherwise known as Roots Wonder), a little-known slab of near perfect roots reggae brilliance that was first released on Canadian imprint Big Head way back in 1978. You'll find the other track from that sought-after 12", the deeper and slightly more dub-wise, 'Solomone', over on side B. As you'd expect, the vibrant picture disc also includes alternative dub and vocal versions based on the same superb riddims.

Review: Raving romancers Schlachthofbronx creep out of their Munich hidey hole with two system wallopers for Zam Zam Sounds. Taking off where 'Dun Dem' left us in 2018, there's a real industrial weight to 'Akkord' as a bulging bassline, steel foundry clangs and a rainbow of risers lead us into the big skank payoff. 'Shell' on the flip is a grumpier affair; classic heavily reverbed drums, a manic siren and rim shots galore, this won't so much as turn heads but twist them right off.

Review: For the latest missive on his self-titled imprint, Aba-Shanti-I has decided to dip into his bulging box of unreleased 1990s dubplates and offer up a quartet of killer productions, all of which are credited to the Shanti-Ites. 'Horn of Africa' is a typically weighty slab of digi-reggae goodness that comes backed by the arguably superior - and formidably dancefloor-focussed - steppers style 'Horn of Dub' version. Over on the flip, 'Lightening' is a far breezier, lighter and jazzier take on the traditional Aba-Shanti digi-dub sound, while 'Lightening Dub' is a more skeletal and sub-heavy revision which nevertheless makes great use of the producer's vibraphone style melodies.
