Hiss (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 80. Rel: 05 Oct 20
  1. Hiss (4:18)
  2. Palms (4:10)
Review: ZAMZAM goes bang bang once again as the dutty dubstep label hits release number 80. Cause keeps it utterly filthy on the a-side with 'Hiss,' a heavyweight nobler with a menacing bassline that's so fat it wiggles as it walks. Crashing hits and sci-fi synth motifs make this a most astral crawler. 'Palms' has whirring synths and a bassline curried oceans below. Freaky vocal sounds are haunting and dark and add tension to the track as it prowls along through an utter wasteland. Atmospheric stuff, to be sure.

  6. Lightning Skank (dub 2) (3:41)
Review: Some classic UK digital dub and reggae business here, as Culture Freeman and the Bush Chemists collective delve into their collective archives and retrieve a bunch of vintage gems from the 1990s. Side A is all about 'Armagideon', a typically weighty, Melodica-heavy number featuring some superb toasting from mic man Freeman. The accompanying dubs are especially potent, with the sheer sub-weight of the 'Dub 2' version being particularly alluring. Over on side B, Bush Chemists go solo on 1994 gem 'Lightning Skank', a synthesizer and drum machine heavy digi-dub roller blessed with some snaking electronic melodies and delay trails aplenty. It too comes backed with two heavy, stripped-back dub revisions.

Cat: MUSCUT 19. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Jah (4:41)
  2. Azamat (2:28)
  3. Sawboy (2:06)
Review: Muscut's releases tend to meld existing musical forms into interesting new shapes, and this three-tracker from St Petersburg producer Marble is no exception. While rooted in the deep bass and distinctive rhythmic patterns pf dub, it's not like any dub record we've heard before. That's no bad thing though, because 'Jah' and 'Asamat', in particular, are superb, with the Russian artist combining jazzy woodwind sounds - some 'as played', others electronically manipulated - with touches of subtle surf-rock guitar, deep bass, and rhythms created from unusual electronic sounds. Even more brilliantly bonkers is 'Sawboy', where what sound like energetic clarinet solos stretch out across a squelchy, TB-303 bassline.

Push Push
Push Push (7")
Cat: STIX 051. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Push Push (4:08)
  2. Push Push (version) (4:10)
Review: Four years have passed since we last heard from Taggy Matcher, the reggae, dub and dancehall alias of musical polymath Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart. 'Push Push' sees him reunite with semi-regular collaborator Eve-Line Lamarca AKA LMK, a singer and toaster whose distinctive style was last heard on a 2017 tribute to Yabby You's 'My Enemies Riddim'. She naturally does a terrific job on the A-side full vocal version of 'Push Push', reciting her own dancehall style lyrics over a skanking, digital reggae riddim from the ridiculously talented Hovart. His backing track, which prioritizes synth-brass, deep bass and Hammond organ sounds, can be heard in full on the flip.

  3. Crucial Dub 2 (3:53)
Review: Rough Signal Records have finally snapped up a man who has released many big tunes, most of which get heavy support from the famous King Shiloh sound system amongst many others. Mighty Profit is a big producer with a big sound and he hails from Italy, which is in something of a dub sweet spot right now. This tune is a special collaboration work from Rough Signal Records JPN and fuses his exclusive synth with Dub Kazman's signature bass line, some sick drums and percussion. The tune takes its name from the tumultuous times in which we find ourselves and sure provides some respite.

Resilience (limited hand-stamped hand-numbered 7")
Cat: ALDBS 7012. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Resilience (4:04)
  2. Resilience Dub (4:05)
Review: Alchemy serve up their 12th limited edition 7" and it is a real belter. On the first side you'll find 'Resilience,' a melodica version over a 90's inspired steppers riddim. UK dub don Chazbo plays the first verse and then hands over to the Japanese melodica player Yuuri Bamboo for the second. Both have unique styles that shine through and make this a nice and mystical dub with lots to lose yourself in. On the flip is a more stripped down and dubbed out version that brings early morning vibes and was mixed live in analogue by Ojah at his studio.

  2. Roots Defender Horns - "Horns Of Freedom" (4:13)
  3. Ramon Judah - "Freedom Rock" (4:13)
  4. Dub Defender - "Dub For Freedom" (4:12)
Review: Italian label Bababoom serve up this brand new and essential roots 12" featuring vocalist and musician Ramon Judah, Roots Defender Horns and Dub Defender. It kicks off with 'Freedom Chant', a pained vocal riding over prickly dub beats that open mind and heart. 'Horns Of Freedom' then repurposes the groove and layers up some sultry trumpets to bring a different mood. 'Freedom Rock' then takes the tune into a lovers rock world with earthy and organic guitar plucking and 'Dub For Freedom' is the nice rolling closer, with fat drums and flabby bass inviting you in deep.

Please Jah Help Me
Cat: JW 033. Rel: 28 Oct 20
  1. Please Jah, Help Me (4:06)
  2. Please Jah, Help Me (dub) (4:04)
Review: Long-serving duo Reality Souljahs have worked with a wide range of producers over the years, though this seven-inch single still marks the first time they've teamed up with UK scene veteran Steve Mosco AKA Jah Warrior. He's at the controls on 'Please Jah Help Me', a positive, synth-and-drum-machine-heavy number in which the duo's effortlessly soulful, life-affirming vocals and ragga style raps rise above a lightly dubbed-out backing track. Mosco gives his own take on the track on the flip, delivering an especially weighty, delay-laden dub interpretation full of echoing drum hits, super-sized sub-bass and ricocheting piano stabs.

World Crisis 2020
  1. Winston Reedy - "World Crisis 2020" (3:26)
  2. The Inn House Crew - "Digilew Riddim" (3:27)
Review: Lewis M is at the controls for all-star studio band the Inn House Crew's latest must-check collaboration with veteran Jamaican vocalist Winston Reedy. He's in fine form on 'World Crisis 2020', a classic, Black Ark-era Lee 'Scratch' Perry style number in which Reedy delivers an accurate if dread-filled commentary on current global events over a superb, retro-futurist dub reggae riddim. That Inn-House crew backing, which is peppered with neat musical details such as jazzy guitar solos and hazy Melodica lines, is showcased in full on the similarly essential, flipside 'Digilew Riddim' version.

  3. Roots Wanda - "Solomone" (Discomix) (6:26)
  4. Dubplate Cut 4 (3:29)
Review: With their Tweeter Box series of limited-edition EPs, Purple Audio is doing a great job in gathering together obscure vocal reggae and dub cuts from the late 1970s and '80s. There's naturally much to set the pulse racing on this third volume. Up first is the seven-minute 'Disco Mix' of 'Mount Zion' by Roots Wanda (otherwise known as Roots Wonder), a little-known slab of near perfect roots reggae brilliance that was first released on Canadian imprint Big Head way back in 1978. You'll find the other track from that sought-after 12", the deeper and slightly more dub-wise, 'Solomone', over on side B. As you'd expect, the vibrant picture disc also includes alternative dub and vocal versions based on the same superb riddims.
