Expansions

Expansions (feat Shniece) (4:06)
Expansions (dub) (4:13)
Review: Prince Fatty's new independent record label Lovedub Limited kicks off with a super 7" from the man himself. It is in fact something of an homage to the 1970s jazz-funk of Lonnie Liston Smith but with some hefty dub and reggae treatment. Shniece Mcmenamin stars on vocals and brings plenty of summer soul to the groove which is also lit up with free-flying flute lines over steady reggae rhythms that will sink you in deep to Winston "Horseman" Williams and Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie's drums, organ and piano. On the flip is the dub with the iconic Liston-Smith melody leading you through a lazy afternoon in style.

Black Rabbit
Black Rabbit (dub)
Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

Welcome To The Dub

Welcome To The Dub (9:41)
Dubanova (7:05)
Happiness & Peace (5:42)
Review: It's always a good day when Al Kent is back with new music. This one on Gamm, Welcome To The Dub, finds him dubbing out some lush disco sounds. The title cut is a loopy and jazz-funk-infused number with lovely hi-hats and noodling chords all radiating joy and uplifting energy. 'Dubanova' then takes a more low-slung route with a sleazy guitar riff and nice live drums embellished with smartly overdubbed vocals coated in echo. 'Happiness & Peace' is a quieter affair with echoing hits and a meandering lead that encourages your mind to do the same.

Dr 55 (4:34)
Lower Feels (6:55)
Review: The Mysticisms label welcomes Coral D aka Duncan Stump for a debut outing here that marks the first new music to be part of the ongoing and most excellent Dubplate series. This artist has a long history of crafting "deep dub electronic swing" in his roles in Mock & Toof, FX Mchm and his 6000 Degrees project. This one finds him bringing some dub reggae influences as 'Dissolves' is built on a chugging rhythm with smeared chords. 'DR 55' is then a masterfully laidback digi-dub groove that warps space and time and so leaves you utterly hypnotised.

Mercedes Benz
Cat: LVD 003. Rel: 12 Jan 24
Mercedes Benz (4:31)
Mercedes Benz (version) (3:36)
Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Review: Australian bass collective Echo Chamber get busy with this supreme VA featuring a range of talented friends old and new. LQ takes the lead with the sublime 'Way Down' that bubbles and flexes in two system-primed forms: the spacious heavyweight Dubkasm mix and LQ and MSHCode's own breakbeat-heavier shakedown. Cat: CSKNOE 076. Rel: 03 Apr 24
Wicked Ah Fi (Knoe1 Steppaz mix) (4:21)
Black Woman (Knoe1 Family mix) (3:25)
Review: Mikal Asher, a scion of Jamaica's Morgan family dynasty, reunites with Chocolate Star Records here and does so with a collaboration with disco legend Gary Davis. Asher, akin to his brother Denroy Morgan, upholds the family's legacy of righteousness through music. Known as the Binghiman, he crafts captivating tunes with profound lyrics and has recorded in Ghana's Hustle Hard Studios and collaborated with industry pioneers in Kingston and Brooklyn, setting new standards in musical excellence along the way. Here, 'Wicked Ah Fi' transforms into a modern dub stepper, while 'Black Woman' offers a soulful, laid-back dedication to Davis' wife, Sonjia. This 7" also comes with innovative remixes from California-based DJ and producer Knoe1.

Dubwise (2:57)
Review: Jah Screechy's 'Walk & Skank' on the Just Is label will have you doing just that. It is a tune that really will ignite dancefloors with its infectious rhythm and rich reggae vibes and is a rather timeless anthem that showcases Screechy's distinctive vocal style. It blends effortlessly with the track's pulsating bassline and hypnotic beat to embody the essence of Jamaican dancehall culture. On the flip is a signature 'Dubwise' version with even heavier drum rotations and party-pumping energy. Jah Screechy's status as a reggae legend is assured and this is sonic proof.

Review: Kevin Griffiths (aka Jura Soundsystem) is the man behind the Isle of Jura label and now it turns to Ambient Warrior once more for II, which comes a couple of years after the hugely successful reissue of their Dub's Journey album form 1995. This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. It's a seamless blend of instrumental dub, reggae, bossa nova and tango music that is hugely immersive and distinctive. None of the tunes you will have heard before and that are more great windows into the minds of Ronnie Lion and Andrea Terrano.

Review: Chris 'The Dub Organiser' Lane meets Soothsayer Horns here and the results are simply irresistible. 'Soul Dragon Anthem' is a real gem with heart-swelling horn leads that toot and rouse. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. This 12" comes with some fresh artwork from Jeb Loy Nichols as well as three hefty dub versions, all of which do plenty of damage on a loud system. Another crucial 12" from Ital Counsellor.

Marcia Griffiths - "Feel Like Jumping" (3:36)
Dub Specialist - "Feel Like Jumping" (part 2) (3:45)
Review: Stone cold classic alert! First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. Now available again on a heavyweight vinyl pressing with extra bass-weight, the track us built around an infectious rhythm, dancing horn riffs, sweet backing vocals and a life-affirming lead vocal from Griffiths' celebrating the sheer joy of dancing. The flipside Dub Specialist revision is superb too - a genuinely bone-shaking, sub-heavy dancefloor dub that places echoing snippets of Griffiths' lead vocal and reverberating horns at the heart of the action.

Review: Archive Recordings have fully licensed a reissue of this classic of Freedom Sounds roots from 1977, and press it up on a tasty bit of blue wax. "Black Rose" is a real heater, with swaggering drums and bass, noodling chords buried deep in the mix and lead organ lines that carry you away on a breeze. Making use of the heavyweight Stone rhythm and produced by the late Bertram Brown, this 12" also features a previously unreleased solo Prince Alla vocal and Soul Syndicate's take on the original rhythm track.

Review: While there is barely any solid information as to the identity and ideals behind the Lokal Affair project, this is the sort of material that speaks for itself, and one which has successfully tapped into the current state of affairs in the electronic game. This badass EP lands on the increasingly relevant Boomarm Nation, and carries three killer infusions of cryptic pseudo house and ethnic rhythms for the more open-minded DJ. If there was such a thing as 'small-room tools' then these would be it; watch out for the Alter Echo remix on the flip, too, as it's a rather voracious affair for the dance. Big ol' tip here!

Natty Roots (Paolo Baldini remix - version 2) (4:15)
Review: Pressure Sounds come through with a super 10" here with Natty Roots Controller mixed three different ways by Paolo Baldini. It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Version 1 of the remix is heavier and more upright, with just as much bass weight, then the second version is lit up with some sci-fi effects. All three are delicious dubs for those who like it heady.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: Flower Records fusion masters Masato Komatsu and Ryo Kawahara are Slowly and are adept at everything from dub to disco, soul to post-rock. They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' Review: SND & RTN show their class here with a set of six sublime dub techno cuts that have been pressed to nice solver and heavyweight vinyl. There is nothing groundbreaking about the music here but what is done is done to an exceptionally high standard. The sound designs are faultless, from the bottomless bass to the pilot kick drums via the way in which their fizzing chords do nimble dances over the face of each tune. Some lean into the wind, some are utterly horizontal, all are great.

Jay Glass Dubs - "Milk & Honey" (dub) (5:37)
Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. This is a limited-edition white label vinyl 12" so snap it up fast.

Review: Indianapolis tech house mainstay Adam Jay has been doing his thing since the 90s, originally setting up the Azure label before moving on to the Chromagnon and Chroma labels into the new millennium. These days, he releases frequently on Detroit Underground, but this new EP lands on German label Milligramme, and it finds Jay indulging his dubbier side on 'Boogie Dub', which promptly gets remixed by Noncompliant into a immersive techy roller. Review: Stephen Garfield Townsend is the Ghetto Priest (and also works as Levi Judah and Squiddly) and he is a rather prolific talent who has dropped five albums and some 29 EPs. This one came last year and finally arrives on wax. 'Smile' is a deep dub with endless echo and reverb swirling around the lower end as his vocals bring a smoky soul next to the wispy melodies. The flipside 'Nature Boy' is more light and airy, with sun kissed island feels and another unhurried, storytelling vocal that is delivered with grace and control.

Review: Way back in 2000, dub heavyweight Scientist got his mitts on the parts to Culture's 199 album 'Payday'. The resultant radical dub revisions were, somewhat predictably, brilliant - as this belated CD reissue of the classic set emphatically proves. As critics pointed out at the time, it's arguably far more of a Scientist album than a Culture one, with the latter's delay and reverb-laden vocals (plus some snippets of his backing band's instrumentation) seemingly bobbing and weaving around weighty basslines and echo-laden dub drums. The plentiful highlights include the brilliantly spaced-out 'Beam Me Up Dubby', the deep, driving and horn-heavy 'Intergalactic Excursion' and the thrillingly heavy and abstract 'E Equals MC Squared'.

It offers up four fresh cuts from L'Eclair, a self-styled "exogroove post-internet" six-piece with three must-check albums to their name. Musically, the four tracks offer a breezy, summery and mixed-up blend of Tony Allen style polyrhythms, tropical funk guitars, languid synthesizer sounds, psychedelic electronics and copious amounts of mind-altering dub effects. Our favourites include the low-slung deep Afro-psychedelia of 'Dallas', the rousing, horn-heavy EP opener 'Cebando' (a future dancefloor staple for sure), and the Moog-laden sunrise dreaminess of 'Atlantis'.

The release rate and quality levels have remained high with the likes of breakout Leeds artist Breakface impressing back in May. Now, 18 months or so after their last outing, Ickle & Hotsteppas are back on the label with some more fresh dubs. First up, 'No Love, No Peace' Ft Prince Jaco is a big, fresh roller with great height and serious bass weight. The dub strips things back to melon-twisting echo and reverb and 'Mr Government' (feat Lionpulse) is an organic dub with brilliantly elastic bass. 'Leroy Sax Version' is a sax-laced dub of the same tune.

Review: There's a not a huge amount we know about Koberman's Probandenausweis, other than the fact it sounds very good and will appeal to fans of shamanic, slo-mo, kosmische, drug chug, ambient and experimental electronica. It's a slow building, gradually evolving and immersive trip into a studio, with arrangements valuing silence and emptiness as much as the notes and beats themselves.
Opening on 'Sonnenschirmbrand', a ritualistic number that seems to have the whisper of forgotten souls in the backdrop of a tribalistic beat, layers of noises and percussion adding to the feeling of it taking root in your body well before the bass kicks in. Meanwhile, low ends rule on '32 Ngoesolo', in contrast to 'UH DT101', which uses a twisting synth line as its focal point, allowing other elements to build around it until we're locked into a head nodding oddity.

Review: Just over 40 years have passed since Paketo Wilson headed into the studio to record 'Praise Him' at Harry J Studio in his home city of Kingston, Jamaica. The album, which effortlessly blends roots and lovers rock with the help of producer Trevor Dais and a cast of musicians that includes legendary trumpeter Bobby Ellis, has long been an overlooked, hard-to-find gem - hence this timely reissue from Milanese imprint Arabusta Records. Wilson's honeyed voice remains the focal point throughout, with standouts including 'Jardan Dance', the subtly dubbed-out 'My Daily Bread', and the wonderfully life-affirming 'Jumpy For Joy'. Recommended!

Review: On its release last spring, reviewers hailed Horace Andy's Midnight Rockers as the honey-voiced reggae legend's best album in decades. It was certainly special, with the mighty Adrian Sherwood's production helping elevate the set to future classic levels. It was followed by the alternative, dub style 'Midnight Scorchers' album, which naturally featured Sherwood pushing the envelope far further than he did on the original set. This double-disc set brings together both sets, adds a couple of previously unreleased cuts, and allows us to once again wallow in the magnificence of such highlights as 'Safe From Harm' (a genuinely brilliant, surprisingly dark Massive Attack cover), the Ital Horns-heavy 'Material', Daddy Freddy hook-up 'Midnight Scorchers' and the Melodica-heavy dub workout 'Sleepy's Night Cap'.

Review: French label Macadam Mambo has always operated at the fringes of electronic music. Whether doing disco, world music or experimental sounds it has always had its own odd but alluring musical identity. For this one Tutu Ta goes deep the world of dub and electronics across 12 dark yet nuanced cuts on the Lonely Eyes album. It's a world of wonder with warped synths and ghostly vocal fragments, DIY rhythms and smeared pads that bend space and time. Lighter dubs like 'Talk Of Da Town' sit next to menacing shanks such as 'Krunk (Woody Flute mix)' while the percussive swagger of 'Kilburn Market Dub' is one to get you moving.

Kunte Kinte Version (6:03)
Review: Bernard Cumberbatch - presumably no relation to actor Benedict - and Garnett Cross are Aquizi, the dub duo fromed in the early 80s and Aiwa label mainstays. Their most notable 12" - aside from maybe 1981's 'Merry Christmas' was 'Kunte Kinte' earlier in the same year. It is a bit of a collector's fav that has more than held its value over the ensuing 40+ years. Driven by lazy dub swagger and carefree keys, it's a lovers rock outing peppered with toms and hits and plenty of echoing depths. Flip it over for version if you want something that will boggle the brain more with its endless mixing board effects.

Review: For some reason, the mighty dubs of Joe Gibbs and musical collaborator Errol Thompson have never been as widely celebrated as the pair's multitude of vocal recordings, many of which became colossal hits in their native Jamaica. This fine double-disc set from Doctor Bird aims to set the record straight, delivering a wealth of 'versions' and dub mixes recorded and released between 1975 and '78, all featuring Gibbs and Thompson's usual studio band, the Professionals. It's all top-tier dub - think skeletal arrangements, booming bass, effects-laden percussion and echoing vocal snippets - with 30 of the 48 tracks on show appearing on CD for the very first time. In other words, it should be a must-have for all dub enthusiasts.

If The 3rd World War Is A Must Version (7:12)
Review: Ruffy & Tuffy were teenage twins when they dropped this one back in 1982. It might be one of the first recorded uses of a vocoder in reggae too as they served up their seriously heavyweight low ends and drenched them in synths in a rub-a-dub style. 'If The 3rd World War Is A Must' is one of only a few tunes this pair dropped and although they weren't prolific, they were influential. They were also in a film, Ted Bafaloukos' iconic 1978 Rockers, in which the twins are sparring in red Pony tracksuits. They were proud Rastafarians who remained symbols of defiance.

Review: After dropping many crucial dub albums on the likes of Twinkle Records, Music House Family, Reggae On Top, King Earthquake, and Conscious Sounds, Barry Issac now brings his brilliant vocal tones to Room In The Sky. Issac is well established as a top roots reggae talent who has worked with some of the most notable sound systems out there - Jah Shaka and Channel One being two of them. Here 12 tough riddims featuring some top talents like reggae trombonist Vin Gordon from the Skatalites and Winston Reedy who fronted The Cimarons get finished in style by his work up top. A timeless album for sure.

Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Review: Steely and Clevie were amongst some of the most supreme rhythm makers in all of Jamaica in the 1980s and on into the 1990s. They worked together at King Jammy's in the aftermath of Sleng Teng with Steely doing the synth work and Clevie making the magic on his drum machines. They wrote a wide array of essential rhythms for the day's best emerging dancehall tautens and At The Top is a collection of crucial digital dub workouts "that strips bare the computerised wizardry at the duo's core." These are essential dubs for fans old and new of dancehall.

Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Review: The Heavy Beat label is almost at the not-so-small milestone of 50 releases. Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. The original is a dancehall-tinged sound with those subtle warrior leads and shiny digital synth sounds topped with an old school lover's rock vocal. The flipside version comes from Computer Paul and it slows things down so that sweet bass has more room and space to land and really make a mark.

Review: The Purple Fade crew has assembled another crack team of dub heads for this fresh platter, 'Be Clean.' Fat Frog is the man charged with produciton duties and does a fine job laying down a killer rhythm with two brilliant vocals - the first is Danny Red who implores us all to be clean on the A-side, while on the flip it's Amelia Harmony who sings on 'Reach Out' and does so with a smoky and sultry tone. Both tunes of course come with slower and more spaced out dubs to complete a fine EP.

Review: UK reggae talent Prince Jamo, real name Ian Campbell, produced, wrote and performed this superb wedge of 70s revival roots in a shaka style. It's as deep and authentic as they come. The A-side original, 'The Badlands', has lazy horns drifting up top like a lone cloud on a red hot day. The percussion is gently sprinkled over the neat guitar riffs and rolling drums while the vocals unfold with real soul. Flip it over and you will get a dub version that is more cavernous, fleshy and deep. A lovely slice of roots that is primed and ready for any decent sound system.

Review: Soffplaneten takes us deep into a world of downtempo delight with the Samlar Damm LP on Sunken Rock Recordings. It is an eight-track odyssey that veers from the gentle rhythms of the opener to the languid dub rotations of 'Kom Till Mitt Talt' complete with twanging guitars and soulful vocal seductions. 'Hoga Mamma Moln' is a more percussive and upbeat cut built from loose drums and tin pot percussion but held together with smeared and heat-damaged chords. 'Tunnelbanan' is a whacked-out and laid-back stoner joint while 'En Suddig Musik' gets more experimental and unusual in its sonic collage. A wonderfully irreverent new take on Balearic overall.

The original version is as juicy as the orange depicted on the cover and finds the label head Drumterror in fine form with with the vocal talents of Ranking serving up some quick, tight bars that vibe nicely with the insistent chord stabs and heavy, rooted drums. The sax styling of Ed Hodge add extra sensuousness. On the flipside you get treated to a 'Social Version' that tweaks the original, layers in more echo and generally flips the vine to a more heady and late night sound.

Originally produced and mixed by Russ D. at the Backyard Studio and dropped in 2004 on Boom Shaka, this reissue brings two softer delights back to the fore. 'Oh Jah Jah' is a nice, slow-motion churner with mystic flute leads and natty chords. This one features the legendary Macka B and the talented saxophonist Guru Pope bring their skills to a rhythm that was originally produced by the one and only dub-making don that is Jacin, while all the cuts have been expertly mixed by Gamma Sound's N-Tone DUB. Review: Partial Records has always been partial (sorry) to traditional roots that come with blazing horns and stepping rhythms. Here we get more of just that from Restless Mashaits who features Boom Horns on a couple of crucial new cuts. 'Rasta The First' has some pretty steamy sax lines to kick off with over tight and propulsive rhythms, then "First Dub' is a more watery and aqueous version. 'Restless Mashaits' takes a slower, more snaking and seductive approach before a dub version rounds out with digi-synths and crashing hits for some more physical action.
