For the Disco Deception album, he raids the reinvents various classics in the image of his own signature low-end energy and impeccable production, giving us original and dub mixes to choose from in several cases. His version of Krfatwerk's 'The Model', which features both Shniece and Horseman, was an underground smash when it emerged a couple of years back and sounds as vital as ever. 'Fever', made famous by Peggy Lee as far as 1958, gets some soul-stirring vocals from Shniece, and Tom Browne's 'Funkin' For Jamaica (NY)' is a glory of funky basslines to shimmering horns. A magnetic atmosphere that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish, all with character to spare.

Review: Ronnie Lion is one half of Ambient Warrior and this is his debut solo outing. It finds him paying homage to Spanish Town, which is the capital of St Catherine in Jamaica and that is apparent from the off with its lush Spanish guitar notes fluttering over the face of the dubbed-out low ends and shiny digital chords. Lead guitarist Sean Wilkinson pays plenty of the guitar and the rhythm section has Ronnie himself on bass while Horseman is on drums to bring a heavy foundation. Up to the intricate and memorable hooks add the colour and charm and elements of Bossa Nova and Flamenco guitar also help add extra layers to this fine debut.

It's all spectacular, of course, but our current favourites include a chugging, 2009 punk-funk revision of Doves' 'Compulsion', the post-punk dub headiness of Audiobooks' 2018 cut 'Dance Your Life Away', a vintage, electro-fired Two Lone Swordsmen dub of Saint Etienne and a rare, percussion-rich and extremely hard to find Sabres of Paradise tweak of Espiritu's 'Boninta Manana'.

Capturing the etheric essence of the 'version' and ready-making it for the present day, the nominal series welcomes contributions and reissues from new and old producers alike. Review: During the pandemic lockdown, Fat Freddy's Drop looked themselves away in the iconic Michael Fowler Centre in the band's hometown of Wellington, New Zealand. There was no audience as a reflection of the weird times, but they still set to jamming out a wealth of conscious songs of freedom and hope for a generation. Their whole studio was relocated to the venue along with an MPC and allowed the band to turn out slow burn classics like 'Soldier', 'Hope' and 'This Room' as well as test drive 'Avengers', which was a brand new track in the making.

Review: The finely named Leeds based crew Gentleman's Dub Club come back once again with a sixth studio album. Review: Is there a more famous nutcase in music than Lee Scratch Perry? The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person. This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik." After immersive closer "No Age" you'll be keen to do it all again.

There is no messing right from the off with 'Abou Simbel' layering up video game sound effects with off-grid drums and relentless bass. Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.
What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

They have put out a wealth of seminal EPs and eps in that time but Same was one that never quite got the attentions of some of the others. Now it gets re-floated having been fully remastered for the occasion. It is packed with rolling dub techno and deft synth craft as you might expect. Some are our mind music, deep rollers to lock you into a trance and see you there, and others like 'Scuba Lounge' are empty ambient pieces that suspend you in space, while the rathe outlying 'Spoil' is a random filter house tune that sounds good but is a weird fit.

Review: Hot on the heels of the release of their new album, Dubbies On Top, The Kings of Dub Rock - a freewheeling digi-dub trio founded by German actor-turned-singer-and-musician Jacques Palminger - has decided to deliver a fresh pressing of their 2008 debut album, Mondo Cherry. It's an unusual but highly entertaining affair, with Palminger alternating between tongue-in-cheek comedy monologues and Chanson-style singing (both in his native German, of course) atop quirky dub-wise riddims which make extensive use of lo-fi synths, squelchy electronic basslines and eccentric musical flourishes. Review: Another one of the very many top draw On-U Sound albums from days gone by gets a reissue here. 1984's Warzone by The Missing Brazilians (a project led by label founder Adrian Sherwood in collab with vocalist Annie Anxiety, members of African Head Charge and Dub Syndicate as well as various others from the On-U Sound family) is the only album the collective put out. It's a grimy mix of dub, industrial, electro, experimental, reggae and electronic sounds with famously abrasive textures. This reissue brings it back to the fore with a great mastering job that demands loud plays and close inspection.

It came on February 5, 2002 via the Sanctuary/Trojan label and went on to win the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Review: Michael 'Palmer Dog' Palmer was one of the most notable dancehall vocalist of his era. He became quickly popular after appearing with plenty of sound systems and perfecting his unique improvisational techniques on the mic. That helped him standout in an overcrowded market and kept him popular with DJs who were turning reggae away from what it was becoming and turning it back to what it once was. This album first came in 1984 and showcased Palmer's singing style well with The Roots Radics serving as his backing band. A mini classic for sure.

Review: Kevin Griffiths (aka Jura Soundsystem) is the man behind the Isle of Jura label and now it turns to Ambient Warrior once more for II, which comes a couple of years after the hugely successful reissue of their Dub's Journey album form 1995. This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. It's a seamless blend of instrumental dub, reggae, bossa nova and tango music that is hugely immersive and distinctive. None of the tunes you will have heard before and that are more great windows into the minds of Ronnie Lion and Andrea Terrano.

Review: At King Tubby's With The Roots Radics sounds a bit like the sort of text message a kid out too late might send her worried mum. It's also the name of this killer album which finds Barry Brown providing some super vocal work to killer rhythms initially laid down by the in house band Roots Radics and then twisted into psyched out stoner soundscapes by the one and only studio wizard The Scientist. He really gets deep here and EQs hard while masterfully dubbing Brown out of the picture.

Review: Following on from the CD version of this reissue, 17 North Prada now follow it up with a welcome vinyl edition. Prince Far I worked with Joe Gibbs's house band The Professionals on Under Heavy Manners, his 1976 full-length recorded at Gibbs's studio in Kingston, Jamaica. His messages throughout his career were always focussed on social and political issues and lend this album its extra lyrical edge on top of the killer rhythms. Gibbs composed all of the tracks bar one from Errol Thompson and it is generally considered one of his finer works. Snap this one up now because it will soon disappear again.

Review: French label Macadam Mambo has always operated at the fringes of electronic music. Whether doing disco, world music or experimental sounds it has always had its own odd but alluring musical identity. For this one Tutu Ta goes deep the world of dub and electronics across 12 dark yet nuanced cuts on the Lonely Eyes album. It's a world of wonder with warped synths and ghostly vocal fragments, DIY rhythms and smeared pads that bend space and time. Lighter dubs like 'Talk Of Da Town' sit next to menacing shanks such as 'Krunk (Woody Flute mix)' while the percussive swagger of 'Kilburn Market Dub' is one to get you moving.

Review: Burning Sounds pay tribute to some of reggae's most crucial DJs with this new album The Magnificent 7. It is packed with artists inspired by the fundamental elements of Rastafarianism and they all speak loudly of the virtues of "living upright in those dread times." The 17 tracks touch on obscurities, instrumentals and dubs, vocal edits and all manner of roots, boogie, reggae, house, soul and disco gems. It makes for a never less than heart swelling collection that bring immediate sunshine to even the most rainy, cold days in the north of England. Highlights are plentiful, but our picks of the bunch are Bill Campbell's "Body Beat" which does exactly what it says on the tin, Adonijah's disco stomper ("It's Alright") and Levi John's "Soca", a lo-fi oddity with brilliantly loose drum work.

Review: The story behind this one is that Vivian Yabby You Jackson once put together a tape that had been labeled The Best Of Patrick Andy but had never been put it out. On it was three unreleased tunes, one unreleased dub, and stereo mixes of several previously mono-only singles. For whatever reason it now sees the light of day and we're glad about it - this forms a fine tribute to a top singer and a legendary producer with some timeless dub. The horns pan, the rhythm tracks are heavy, the studio trickery is impressive throughout.

Review: The Bush Chemists rebased they know long out of print fifth studio album 'Dub Fire Blazing' in 2001. Head up by Dougie Wardrop, it is a chunky and rugged fusion of macho traditional reggae with plenty of sleek, fresh and future facing digital dub tones that still sound avant guard today. The heavy bass of these tunes will of course always connect and this ten track affair might well be the best work the crew ever put out. 'Long Time I No Smoke' is the headline making tune here that will appear to those who like the sounds of Iration Steppas.
