Black Cinderella (remastered)
Cat: SBRS 010. Rel: 08 Apr 24
Black Cinderella (vocal) (4:31)
Black Cinderella (dub) (4:38)
Review: 'Black Cinderella' which harriers on this new 7" as both a vocal and a dub, was written by Max Edwards Asher and offers a soulful and thought-provoking musical experience that challenges perceptions and societal norms. Originally engineered in Studio 1, this track reimagines Cinderella as a woman of colour. Written by Jimmy Rodway, the song aims to empower black women and urges them to envision themselves as the desired fantasy character. The limited edition 45 rpm showcases Asher's masterful production and features a lovely warm and inviting analogue sound and poignant message of empowerment and inclusion.

Congo Shuffle (version) (7:07)
Invisible Guest (6:54)
Paralyzed Dub (2:32)
Review: UK dub techno maestro Steve O'Sullivan is back with another payload of deep immersion heaters under his Bluetrain guise, this time on the Future Primitive label. There's a deadly restraint at work on "Congo Shuffle", where the elements get reduced to needlepoint precision and the low end rhythm section stalks with purpose. "Invisible Guest" takes things in an explicitly dubwise direction, channelling serious Rhythm & Sound vibes for an immaculate head-nodder, before "Paralyzed Dub" slows down further into an end of the line skank for the weary to find solace in - masterful movements in the echo chamber from start to finish.

Leggo Violence (3:34)
Leggo Violence (version) (3:03)
Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is a dub well worth inspecting. Except you might struggle to find one these days, and it will be pricey if you do, because it has become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

String Gadget
Here Comes The New Prophet
Watchamacallit Machine (Scientist dub)
String Ting (Scientist dub)
Here Comes The New Profit (Scientist dub)
Review: Multi-Culti regular Dreems (AKA Aussie producer Angus Gruzman) makes music that's deeply psychedelic, but often extremely difficult to neatly pigeonhole. He's at it again on this first outing for Pinchy & Friends, which combines a trio of original cuts with a similar number of total reconstructions from dub hero Scientist. You'll find the former on the A, with analogue-rich synth-wave throbber 'Watchamacallit Machine' being joined by the minimalistic, bass-heavy brilliance of 'String Gadget' and the tactile psychedelic electronic funk of 'Here Comes The New Prophet'. Scientist's dubs are naturally excellent, with the much-loved mix-master re-imagining Gruzman's tracks as deep, spaced-out electronic dub tracks. They're all great, with his dub of 'Here Comes The New Prophet' being the most dancefloor-ready of the lot.

Never You Wake The Dragon (4:23)
Dragon Fire Version (4:05)
Review: Chris 'The Dub Organiser' Lane meets Soothsayer Horns here and the results are simply irresistible. 'Soul Dragon Anthem' is a real gem with heart-swelling horn leads that toot and rouse. The chords are lazy and loose and a sprinkling of percussion and natty guitar riffs are integral to the rhythm overall. This 12" comes with some fresh artwork from Jeb Loy Nichols as well as three hefty dub versions, all of which do plenty of damage on a loud system. Another crucial 12" from Ital Counsellor.

Og (outro) (2:34)
Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Cat: WE 002. Rel: 17 Nov 23
Love & Unity - "I Just Don't Care" (7:41)
Seargent Pepper - "Cut From Master Tape" (8:15)
Review: Part of a fresh string of reissues of Love & Unity 12"s - one of many star aliases to grace the annals of South London reggae label Studio 16 - comes this headfirst collision between L&U and Seargent Pepper. Sharing similar instrumentals, 'I Just Don't Care' hears a blissful femme soprano glide elegantly across its bubblings - the instrumental is super well-rounded, sawn-off. On the B-side, meanwhile, there's Pepper's 'Cut From Master Tape', which hears Pepper toast the rhythm lackadaisically, as endlessly hazy dub effects resound and a janky double-time kick propels it all forward.

Mellow Rose - "Imitation Love" (7:30)
Seargent Pepper - "Dub & Rub Ina Imitation Way" (7:44)
Review: Mellow Rose and Seargent Pepper's 'Imitation Love' proved a big-hitting reggae 45rpm when it first dropped and so now it has been reissued on this sweet, limited edition red vinyl 12". It first came on Studio 16 back in August of last year and is already worth a pretty penny on second hand markets. The A-side is a super sweet lover's rock sound with falsetto vocals up top, acoustic guitars and fleshy low ends sinking you into a romantic rhythm. On the flip, Seargent Pepper gets to work on 'Dub And Rub Ina Imitation Way' which is more sci-fi and futuristic in its sound designs, all with a hazy and stoner edge.

Review: Since launching in 2021, the Ohm Series has brought us swathes of immersive dub techno works from the Scandinavian perspective. With artists like Thor attached to earlier instalments, this VA run comes with an assurance of quality which maintains on part six. Whether it's the billowing clouds and minimal house shuffle of 'Syntax' by Sirko Muller or the fluid techno pulse of Shcuro & Vil's 'Fluxus', this is a masterclass in the style from artists who know how to evoke those tundra-like soundscapes within a sophisticated dance music framework.

Soul Syndicate - "Black Rose" (version) (3:14)
Review: Archive Recordings have fully licensed a reissue of this classic of Freedom Sounds roots from 1977, and press it up on a tasty bit of blue wax. "Black Rose" is a real heater, with swaggering drums and bass, noodling chords buried deep in the mix and lead organ lines that carry you away on a breeze. Making use of the heavyweight Stone rhythm and produced by the late Bertram Brown, this 12" also features a previously unreleased solo Prince Alla vocal and Soul Syndicate's take on the original rhythm track.

Mercedes Benz (4:31)
Mercedes Benz (version) (3:36)
Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Review: NYC based Onysia Records recently launched its sister label Convent for dub that it deems to be more heavy and edgy. This seance release is just that. Scientist vs anyone is going to be worth hearing. Scientist vs J Gabriel is about as good as it gets as, since making his debut, Gabriel has blurred the boundaries between electronic dub, deep house, dub techno and minimal. Here he's in full-on dub mode, with Scientist handling mixing duties for extra authenticity and a typically spaced-out sound. Mike Shannon and Deadbeat both step up on the flip-side to add their own delicious and hypnotic dub techno take.

It has been that way since he debuted in 1992 and in the ensuing hears has worked with the likes of Nick Manasseh, Robert Tribulation, Michael Rose, Alpha and Omega and many more. Here he is dropping one of a couple of new tunes on the Africa Mae Do Leao label out of Brazil. 'Promised Land' (Binghi Mix) is super slow dub with Indian melodic references. It is dub with a global twist - the dig-dub low ends paired with mystic synth leads, organic percussion and echoing hits. Vocals speak with conscious messages about being the enemy, fighting back and plenty more. If you prefer it more direct then check out the dub on the flip which has more rich melodies that ring out above the tight rhythms.

Review: Bim Sherman and Sound Iration came together for this one in 1989 on WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings. Since then it has become a cult classic that will cost a few quid on the second-hand market. But it's not easy to find and so now comes a reissue by Partial. It features two of the three tunes that were on the original with identical artwork. In original form, 'Dream' is a blissed-out bit of sun-kissed electronic reggae. The drums are crisp, Bim's vocals are clean and the organ chords suck you in deep. 'Dream' (version part 3) is a subtle rework that brings out different leads.

'Bam Bam' is a reissue of her seminal debut single, which features her signature sound of roots reggae and dancehall, raileing against the male-dominated 80s scene with its ribbing hook and slapping instrumental. Review: Jai Life digs into their archives for this latest 12" and offers up a pair of killer disco mixes. First up is a tune that deserves the title of being one of the most overlooked gems in the label's catalogue - it has been little known ever since the first time it was released in the early '80s. Terrie from the Nairobi Sisters sings on 'Left With a Broken Heart' which melts into a killer dub-wise groove with fine melodica. On the flip is one of Barrington Lvi's best tunes, 'Black Man Heart', with a killer dub from Scientist remix next to the disco-tinged original.

Review: The intriguingly entitled Seafoam Fiction label serves up a second super good, super limited 12" that takes in Detroit style house, deeply atmospheric ambient cuts, and some leftfield styles, all from the founder SL Jung. 'A Cushioned Reminder' pairs curious melodies that have you gazing off to the distance with soft kicks and an implied deep house rhythm that seems to roll along the ocean floor. The equally unusual but enticing 'Blue Freak' has more weird and wonderful sounds making for a musical and perfectly reduced deep house mood piece. Last of all, 'Inland Delta' is slightly more traditional with a dusty kick clap combo and rolling drums overloaded with gorgeously molten melodies.

They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' Review: You can always count on Capracara to bring something a little spicy to the table, but the results are even more unpredictable when you throw UK house magician Simbad into the mix. If you like your house music extremely grubby, blippy, analogue and slightly unhinged, but still soulful, you're in the right place. 'Roubaix Cube' jerks and bumps along with all kinds of bleeps and rugged beats, and the pads sound delirious but still inject some real heart into the track. 'Prowler Report' heads further off into discordant freakiness, but there's still plenty of punch down low. 'The Ozone' is the smoother offering, with some gorgeous keys, chords and pads interweaving for a still-rugged but oh-so-sweet strain of deep house music.

Running Out Of Time (Sons Wreck mix) (8:00)
Review: Ian Weatherall and Duncan Gray's Sons Of Slough project has done plenty of tinkering in the intersection between club and dub music, and somewhere between all that Scottish rock perennials Primal Scream often find their own comfortable nook to stretch out. As such, this 12" seems like a natural course of events, even if it came about through the pure whimsy of a day-dreaming muso (Weatherall) wondering what would happen if an obscure bonus track got stripped down and sent through the echo chamber. Bobby Gillespie was into the idea, and this record was the end result. One for all Balearic head nodders and soundsystem meditators alike.

Review: Soul Revivers are a UK-based project of musicians and producers spanning seven decades, including Nick Manasseh and David Hill from Rootikal. Played off as a reissue of two classics (the design of the 7" is convincing enough), this actual fresh single has got two lovably layered numbers on it: 'Shouting Dub' and 'Furthest Version'. The former is an attention-grabbing yet leisurely plod through the smoke-hazed forestreets of yore, graciously alternating between two-toned basses and globular guitars. The B is much more spacious and phat.

Top Of My List (dub) (4:12)
Review: Soul Sugar's signature, fruitful blend of reggae and soul once more oozes forth with 'Top Of My List'. Featuring the vocals of Shniece McMenamin, the track is a liquefyingly dreamy song, unhesitatingly letting in the sunny rays of rocksteady through the Venetians. But in contrast to the mood, it also tells the dubious story of our protagonist placing their self-respect and self-love in the hands of a former lover, with social-fabric-tearing consequences, a funk from which McMenamin sings to help pick up the pieces. The dub version helps; it's a refractive and soft version, emphasising more atmosphere than hardness or forward propulsion.

Review: They say that something done well is made to look easy, and Star Dub sure do make things look easy. Their neat artwork, limited 12" drops and considered dub techno sounds are all exceptionally well executed and now this is the 15th time they have pull off that trick. 'Track 1' is the deep and cavernous underwater opener, 'Track 2' stumbles on a nice broken beat vibe, 'Track 3' slows it down to pure heady late-night smoker territory and closer 'Track 4' is the darker and more experimental cut for the afters. I Remember Mama (NAD Discomix) (11:00)
Review: "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott's rare 12" of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.

Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.

Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott's delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.

Released on 7" and 12", they have striking differences. The "Sound Design" instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.

The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a 'discodub' finale. "

It was a classic as soon as it dropped and it has only got more revered over the years as a superb early dancehall album that lay a foundation for the newly emerging sound after the initial reggae revolution. The resultant radical dub revisions were, somewhat predictably, brilliant - as this belated CD reissue of the classic set emphatically proves. As critics pointed out at the time, it's arguably far more of a Scientist album than a Culture one, with the latter's delay and reverb-laden vocals (plus some snippets of his backing band's instrumentation) seemingly bobbing and weaving around weighty basslines and echo-laden dub drums. The plentiful highlights include the brilliantly spaced-out 'Beam Me Up Dubby', the deep, driving and horn-heavy 'Intergalactic Excursion' and the thrillingly heavy and abstract 'E Equals MC Squared'.

The is the sort of brain boggling and mind melting album that demand to be listened to loud, in the dark, on a great sound system or up close on headphones. It's a melange of languid dance music rhythms with experimental synths and percussion adding freaky details up top. Full of wildly unpredictable changes and weird time signatures, zoned out trance music and darkened dub, cosmic synth freak outs and ferocious sound designs, this is a truly unique record on every level.

Review: It should be obvious that the fifth studio album by Micah Shemaiah, Jamaica Jamaica, is a dedication to the reggae homeland. However, anything more than a cursory listen will reveal it to be a mixed-emotive, wistful affair, with the Jamaican reggae once more asserting his reflective, rootsy style to diagnose both the ills and joys of the nation - "Jamaica, Jamaica... the country need a doctor, people". A further two dub versions appear on the album, as well as collaborations with other Jamaican artists such as Eesah, Xana Romeo, Rassi Hardknocks and Mikey General.

Review: It's no secret that reggae and dub are male-dominated, despite women playing pivotal roles in both genres (What would dancehall be without Sister Nancy?) The undisputed king of British dub production and remixing Adrian Sherwood invites 10 women from across the globe to sing in their native language, a project prompted by repeated experiences of feeling intimidated from dub due to the severe gender imbalance. Hindi, Arabic and even Romani are just 3 of the tongues across this project, of which there are no English lyrics. 'Haste Makes Waste' from Japan's Likkle Mai and 'Chavale' from the Romani of Kerieva, who has a certain Bjork quality to her powerful vocals. This record is powerful and beautiful, a perfect celebration of what community and music can achieve in tandem.

Review: Jamaican reggae harmony group The Silvertones were formed in 1964. The band was founded by Gilmore Grand and Keith Coley with the addition of Delroy Denton completing the lineup. It wasn't until 1973 that they recorded their debut album, Silver Bullets, with production taken care of by the late great Lee Scratch Perry. It was actually the first ever album tone produced in Perry's iconic Black Arc Studio and came on Trojan Records with single like 'I'll Take You Home' and 'Rejoice Jah Jah Children.' It is packed with laid back island sounds and beautiful vocals and has been pressed here on nice heavy vinyl for a warm and fulsome feel.

Made in light of a recent blue plaque erected at the site of the original Peckings site in the London borough of Fulham, this 10-tracker is a testament to the group's rootage in UK dub history.

Review: Micheal Smith's Mi Cyaan Believe It is a cult classic record from 1982 that pairs his superb dub poetry - delivered in fantastic patois style - with heavy rhythms. For this year's Black History Month it gets a special edition release. Sadly the precious talent and ferocious wordsmith recorded just this one album after going up in a rough section of Kingston, Jamaica influenced by the toasting style of I-Roy dub sounds of dons like Lee Perry and King Tubby. This one was recorded in England with members of Denis Bovell's Dub Band, British reggae favourites Aswad and legendary trombonist Rico Rodriguez. It remains an exhilarating and relevant listen.

Review: Soffplaneten takes us deep into a world of downtempo delight with the Samlar Damm LP on Sunken Rock Recordings. It is an eight-track odyssey that veers from the gentle rhythms of the opener to the languid dub rotations of 'Kom Till Mitt Talt' complete with twanging guitars and soulful vocal seductions. 'Hoga Mamma Moln' is a more percussive and upbeat cut built from loose drums and tin pot percussion but held together with smeared and heat-damaged chords. 'Tunnelbanan' is a whacked-out and laid-back stoner joint while 'En Suddig Musik' gets more experimental and unusual in its sonic collage. A wonderfully irreverent new take on Balearic overall.

The collaborative project finds esteemed producers David Hill and Nick Manasseh call upon reggae legends such as Ken Boothe and Ernest Ranglin as well as an array of vital UK musical talent. The already popular and critically acclaimed project now offers up more superb dub that draws on the rich history of West London reggae. You may have heard some of the tunes here as they have already been getting dropped on hefty sound systems and across the likes of the BBC and JazzFM.

Review: A remarkably simple yet effective new dub reissue of one of Nick Manasseh & Scruff's earliest dub records under the name Sound Iration, 'Sound Iration In Dub', released in 1989 and which set the precedent for the UK dub scene for years to come. Wholly electronically produced, and manifesting as an early example of dubtronica or steppers, we're presented with a muted style that has enjoyed a popular resurgence among new dub pushers of late. The chirpier 'Free 1' and 'Revelation Dub' are highlights.

Review: Steely and Clevie were amongst some of the most supreme rhythm makers in all of Jamaica in the 1980s and on into the 1990s. They worked together at King Jammy's in the aftermath of Sleng Teng with Steely doing the synth work and Clevie making the magic on his drum machines. They wrote a wide array of essential rhythms for the day's best emerging dancehall tautens and At The Top is a collection of crucial digital dub workouts "that strips bare the computerised wizardry at the duo's core." These are essential dubs for fans old and new of dancehall.

Review: Le Jardin de Lucy was the first album from Tom Dorn aka Sumac Dub. It has previously only been available on CD and digital but now Original Dub Gathering make it available in the format it is most suited to - vinyl. The sound here is electronic but warm, with deft pads and whimsical keys drifting like clouds of weed smoke above the stepping drums and wooden percussion. Meandering basslines add character and playfulness to these most heavy of tunes. 'Titania' has some exotic leads that bring the sunshine, 'Aloe' is riddled with cosmic motifs and 'Sinti Dub' is on a worldly tip.

Review: Michael Wadada was the leader of the Suns of Arqa collective which in its time has seen over 200 different musicians come and go. He started it back in 1979 and perfected downtempo and electro-ambient over 40 superb years. There was a great retrospective compilation 'Revelation XVII' put out back after Wadada's sad passing back in 2022 and now comes hits remastered version of their Revenge Of The Mozabites album. It is dub drenched in world music references, Indian tablas, wonderful eastern melodies and even Spanish guitar. It's a real collision of musical cultures.

Review: Nadine Sutherland is a Jamaican reggae singer who rose to fame in the 1980s, but despite the classic sound of Inna Me Blood, this is album is as fresh as a daisy. Mad Professor's Ariwa Sounds houses the LP, flaunting Sutherlands' distinctive melodic toasting of eighth notes, and her deft exploration of genetic inexorability - if it weren't obvious to you from the off of 'Waggonist', Sutherland asserts her divine right to reggae on the basis that it runs in her blood. A monarchic display of vocal melisma and talent blended with experimental and joyous moods, with easy-on-the-ears, modern and clean production to boot.
