A Way Back
Cat: AQU 004. Rel: 28 Jul 22
Oh Lord (feat Maxwell Owin) (3:39)
What It Is (2:13)
All Ways (3:10)
The Truth (3:22)
A Way Back (3:07)
Review: Even before you hear the first beat, there is something incredibly exit about seeing the names Male - a pioneering beat master and pivotal figure in the early emergence of the dubstep sound - with Joe Armon-Jones, talented musician and master keys man. A Way Back comes on Aquarii, Armon-Jones's own label with him on keys and synths, Mala on drums and bass and Maxwell Owin featuring on 'Oh Lord'. It brings back memories of the golden dubstep years with cavernous bass and heavy weight drums all finished to perfection with Armon-Jones top lines.

Roll It Up (mix 2) (3:50)
Roll It Up (mix 3) (3:47)
The Story (mix 1) (2:57)
The Story (extended mix) (6:05)
Review: France and Jamaica collide on this new 12" from Brother Sound, which is now up to release number three and is managing to maintain the good early standard it set for itself. J.A. legend Max Romeo is in top form on vocals with Brother Sound stepping up for the backing and production. 'Roll It Up' is a high-speed and hard-hitting dub that hurries you into shape-shifting while the vocals add extra pressure. It comes as two other mixes then the flipside has the slower and more meandering melodies and unbalanced sounds of 'The Story' which also comes as an extended mix.

Frenemy (10")
Cat: M INT 01. Rel: 03 Apr 23
Earl Cunningham - "Frienemy" (3:35)
Michael Palmer - "Where Did I Go Wrong" (3:33)
Tasha T - "Feeling The Pain (Sufferer)" (3:35)
Mikey General - "Ghetto Yutes" (3:35)
Jojo Mac - "Wahala Problem" (3:35)
Jojo Mac - "Dub Version" (3:34)
Review: Philadelphia's own Fadda Medina and Medina International serve up this mighty fine 10" for all fans of lover's rock. It is Earl Cunningham who kicks things off on 'Frienemy,' a tune that proves his voice is in top shape. Michael Palmer then comes next with the yearning heartache sounds of 'Where Did I Go Wrong,' and Tasha T keeps tugging at the heart strings with Feeling the Pain (Sufferer).' On the flip are further classic gems from Mikey General and JoJo Mac's 'Wahala Problem,' while a heavy and devastating dub shuts things down. Big EP, this.

Rits Riddim Force & Megahbass - "Fletchers Land Riddim" (original Run Off) (6:14)

Rits Riddim Force - "Fletchers Land Dub" (4:53)
Rits Riddim Force - "Fletchers Land Melodica" (feat Ed Cubitt & Kush Kodovi) (4:48)
Review: There is an awful lot of heat packed into this 10" from Room In The Sky, with six new tracks backed by the in-house Room In The Sky Riddim Force on an original called 'Fletchers Land'. Jah Walton aka Joseph Cotton opens up with 'Ganja Man' which pays homage to the weed smokers over fat drums. Goody Gap's 'I Smoke Weed' is another ode to the magical green herb and Michael 'Megahbass' Fletcher then steps up with a more stripped back and percussive dub. Ras Ranger, Ed Cubitt & Kodjovi Kush then feature on a trio of B-side gems.

Impossible Mission
Cat: JACK 1204. Rel: 25 Jul 23
Jerry Johnson - "Impossible Mission" (3:54)
Brother Sound - "Impossible Dub" (3:57)
Benyah - "Mission Impossible" (3:32)
Macca Dread - "Mission Dub" (3:35)
Review: The Mission Impossible theme is truly iconic but we never thought we'd hear it getting reworked inna reggae style. But that's exactly what we have here from Jackhaya who have enlisted four artists to add their own spin to the tense original. Jerry Johnson kicks off with a superbly laid-back, sax-laced sound full of sexual overtones. Brother Sound's 'Impossible Dub' is a digi-dub with a more muted feel and heavier low end. On the flip is a tropical and steamy rework that sticks more faithfully to the original from Benyah while Macca Dread's 'Mission Dub' is another cavernous one full of echo and reverb.

Anton Kubikov - "Azimut" (8:01)
Elias - "Sommer" (5:42)
Module One - "Inside The Chamber" (7:04)
Marco Cassanelli - "Kattergat" (6:23)
Review: Ohm Records once again come through with the heat, doing the utmost justice to our favourite letter of the Greek alphabet with four slapping deep dubby, subby, wubby tech house cuts. We highly recommend Anton Kubikov's 'Azimut' and Module One's 'Inside The Chamber', both of which chuck echoic on beds of great scaping pads, like hallucinatory angels skirting across heat-hazed horizons.

Macka B - "Aim High" (4:01)
Guru Pope - "Aim Sax" (3:58)
Jacin - "Aim Dub" (3:53)
N-tone - "Aim Ruff" (3:58)
Review: The mission continues here for Reservoir Dub Records who have been working most recently on putting out this one "Aim High' tune on a 10" with four different cuts from four different artists. This one features the legendary Macka B and the talented saxophonist Guru Pope bring their skills to a rhythm that was originally produced by the one and only dub-making don that is Jacin, while all the cuts have been expertly mixed by Gamma Sound's N-Tone DUB. It's a heavyweight package of fresh dub sounds with nods to the old school but plenty of new school cool.

Shocking Skank
Cat: RVRS 01. Rel: 20 Nov 23
Shocking Skank (4:04)
Shocking Skank (mix 2) (4:05)
Review: Hardcore dub heads will know that Mafia & Fluxy's 'Shocking Skank' was first dropped back in 2020 on this River Bank Records label. It's a popular cut from the label heads aka the prolific production duo of drummer Dave and keyboard player Leroy. They work in Jamaica and the UK and have put out a rather mad 27 albums up to now. This gem has warrior leads and wobbling low ends with some bright, light-emitting chords that get you standing tall. Mix 2 on the flip is a subtle tweak.

Manasseh meets The Equalizer - "The Ark" (3:36)
Manasseh meets The Equalizer - "Conspiracy Dub" (3:44)
Review: Nick Manasseh and Jeremy The Equalizer pillage their vast vaults for a bunch of rare dubs here that date all the way back to 1998. The spaced out and heady originals 'Next Step' and 'Next Dub', are backed by two further gems in 'The Ark' and 'Conspiracy Dub'. These two have The Equalizer on production and date from a few years later in the early 90s. All four of these solid saes are perfectly designed to be played loud and proud of proper sound systems. This is their first time on vinyl.

Plato & Caves (7:29)
Plato & Caves (Nit Yardman version) (3:43)
Plato & Caves (dub War remix) (6:01)
Plato & Caves (Mad Magnetism version) (6:26)
Review: Mole Audio is a new label that kicks off with Andy Martin ft. Gavsborg's 'Plato & Caves' and some serious remixes of it which drill back to the origins of the dubstep sound. The featured guest here is a massive name in the Jamaican dancehall scene and a sample of his voice was the starting point for this cut. It has his full approval and is a renegade rhythm with real bounce, as is the Nit Yardman version. Dub War's legendary Bill Fuller steps up to remix fist on the flip then comes a dubby and minimalist house version from Martin to round out a solid first EP from this label.

Summer Madness (3:19)
Use Me (3:39)
Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Tommy's Vibes (2:52)
Tommy's Vibes (version) (2:54)
Review: Pressure Sounds have dug out a previously unreleased version of this lovely roots instrumental from Tommy McCook and The Aggrovators. It was recorded at King Tubby's Legendary studio with production by Bunny 'Striker' Lee and was first found on the Playlist Original King of Dub album. Its a lute, lazy jam with sliding hi hats and nice lead melodies that are bright and airy. The flip pairs tings back a little but the tune remains crucial. This lovely slice of dub comes in a hand stamped brown sleeve.

Version (3:25)
Review: Martin James Ziggy Norman Riley deiced that he would be known as Jimmy Riley when in recording more. The Jamaican singer worked solo but also as part of the Sensations. Here he worked with producer Freddie McGregor on a contemporary lovers rock jam that was originally released back in 1993. 'Badda Than Them' has great patois vocals over fresh production that has clean digital synths over clipped beats and plenty of swaggering and original dub style bass weight. On the flip you get two different versions that tweak and tease out different elements from the original.

Bag Over Shoulder (3:11)
Bag Over Shoulder (version) (3:15)
Review: Sunset's reissue series of Harry J releases continues with this gem from the late, great Freddie McKay's 1986 collaboration with The Jah Apostles, one of the last productions to feature the singer - who seamlessly navigated from the early ska days right up to the digital era - before his untimely death in November of the same year. McKay's soulful vocals ride effortlessly over the Apostles' mesmerising rhythms here, meaning that it is impossible not to be transported listeners to the golden shores of Jamaica at sundown. As is so often with the case with reggae, there's a dubbed out version on the flip - we wouldn't have it any other way.

Ram Jam Party

Ram Jam Party (3:24)
Rammed Dub (3:24)
Review: The Goodies label makes its bow here with a fully licensed 7" that features the Enos McLeod tune 'Ram Jam Party' backed with 'Rammed'. The former was the opening and title track from the Jamaican reggae singer's 1996 album. It is impassioned lovers' rock with his yearning and vulnerable vocals over clean reggae rhythms, with bright chords and lumpy drums and bass. The flip is a dub version with crispy hits and digital synths paired with the natty guitar riffs and organic piano chords. This is a good start and augurs well for the future of this label.

Judas (3:34)
Judas (dub) (3:32)
Review: Meditations Music has decided to launch with a couple of hot reggae drops in quick succession. This second one looks to the rootsy dub sounds of The Meditations. It could well be a reissue of a long-lost classic, such is the authentic nature of the sounds and rhythms but no, this is all-new heat featuring Ansel Cridland with Sly Dunbar and Jerry Johnson. Their snaking and hissing leads and meandering bass are the foundations for the freeform vocals. As you would expect, on the reverse side you will find a sick dub that goes heavy on echo and reverb.

Imitation Love (reissue)

Mellow Rose - "Imitation Love" (7:30)
Seargent Pepper - "Dub & Rub Ina Imitation Way" (7:44)
Review: Mellow Rose and Seargent Pepper's 'Imitation Love' proved a big-hitting reggae 45rpm when it first dropped and so now it has been reissued on this sweet, limited edition red vinyl 12". It first came on Studio 16 back in August of last year and is already worth a pretty penny on second hand markets. The A-side is a super sweet lover's rock sound with falsetto vocals up top, acoustic guitars and fleshy low ends sinking you into a romantic rhythm. On the flip, Seargent Pepper gets to work on 'Dub And Rub Ina Imitation Way' which is more sci-fi and futuristic in its sound designs, all with a hazy and stoner edge.

It Choose Me

Mikey General - "It Choose Me" (3:14)
Earl Maxton - "Prattle" (3:57)
Review: Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah is the venerated producer beyond this new toast from Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer Mikey General. The pair came together during the pandemic and found plenty of common musical ground as they throw it back to the early 1980s analog rub-a-dub style. The backing track has been used in years gone by but Mikey adds his own spin to it here. He has been a mainstay in the scene since the 1980s and has fans in New York, London and Jamaica. On the flip of this one is an instrumental and dub mix, 'Prattle,' which features keysman Earl Maxton on clavinet.

Review: Monyaka's 'Rocking Time' encapsulates the essence of reggae's infectious groove in just four minutes. Released in 1983, this timeless anthem radiates positivity with its upbeat rhythm and uplifting lyrics. Monyaka's infectious energy and catchy melodies invite listeners to dance and celebrate life's joys and serve as a reminder of reggae's ability to transcend borders and unite people with its universal message of love and harmony. Review: Monyaka has a couple of limited edition, hand-stamped 7"s dropping courtesy of Japan Blues this month. This one is 'Questions Of Life', a forlorn and love-struck wedge of lovers rock with conversational horns doing plenty of great work up top. The earthy rhythms and loose, handgun drums are sprinkled with woodblock hits and yearning vocals from Monyaka who asks where he is going in plaintive fashion. Flip it over for a dubwise rework that slows things down and makes them even more heady and spaced out.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Review: After his silky-smooth vocal feature on Eva Lazarus' Light As Feather, it was inevitable that Mungo's Hi Fi would pursue a project with London-based pure sing-jay Kiko Bun. Ms. Burnett is an ode to a lady friend of distinction, atop a dreamy major key rhythm whose bass-heavy clarity could have come out of Jamaica's Channel One studio in its glory days.

Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.

Group Four (Security Forces dub) (8:07)
Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

It's a grimy mix of dub, industrial, electro, experimental, reggae and electronic sounds with famously abrasive textures. This reissue brings it back to the fore with a great mastering job that demands loud plays and close inspection.

It is a superb collection of vocal roots that first came on the American label Nighthawk Records and might be best known for standout hits like 'In God We Trust' and 'Africa' as well as 'Educate Your Mind.' Review: The late great Muslimgauze has one of the most unique sounds in electronic music, even now, many year son. His fusion of the electronic and the ethnic, the experimental and the noisy is in a class of one. Return To The City Of Djinn came first back in 1999 and is the seance of two collabs between John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. It is a mash up of The Rootsman's Into The Light and 52 Days to Timbuktu albums with added Arab cultural references from Jones. There are cut up loops, glassy effects, dub drums and well rod vocal fragments that make for an atmospheric sound track to a stroll through a busy Eastern city.
