Re:align EP
  1. Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
  2. Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
  3. LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
  4. Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Something Freaky
Something Freaky (180 gram vinyl 12")
Mad
Cat: MAD 001. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Bman & Default - "Something Freaky" (6:34)
  2. Default - "System" (5:38)
Review: Those who closely follow the revivalist jungle scene should be well aware of Bman and Default, as both have been serving up Amen-delivered slabs of dancefloor delirium for well over a decade. Here they inaugurate a brand-new label, Mad, via a weighty, excitable two-tracker. The real winner - for old school junglists at least - is collaborative A-side 'Something Freaky', a sub-heavy trip that adds occasional jazzy synth-flourishes and glassy-eyed melodies to an otherwise roughneck ragga-jungle workout. Default goes dolo on the flip, delivering the kind of deep, woozy and spacey early drum & bass roller that was once the preserve of LTJ Bukem and his Good Looking label.

Somewhere Between EP
Cat: TMR 014. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. Booca - "Breath Of My Spirit" (6:21)
  2. DSP - "Just A Touch" (5:56)
  3. Ben Kei - "Desolate" (6:07)
Review: Absolute flames from the Transmute crew as they put together this sweet trippy VA three-piece. Booca takes the lead and sets the tone with "Breath Of My Spirit". Jazzy keys and baggy breaks, there's a lush summery feel running throughout the blend and it's backed by the much more direct and classic sounding jungle of DSP's "Just A Touch". Dalston Chillies' founder Ben Kei closes the EP with the heaviest cut of the set; nasty breaks, evil mentasms and ominous strings. This is war music.

  3. How Long From Now? (5:44)
  4. Luxury Of Sadness (5:57)
Review: Rated over the years by the likes of John Peel and Thom Yorke, Christoph De Babalon has been cooking up experimental jungle since 1994. He remains just as happily and securely on the bleeding edge now as he always has.... Make plenty of room for the thundering drums and unpredictability of "Could We Be?", the overwhelmingly dark and languishing intro on "Pure Dirge", the electrified drone and booming reese on "How Long From Now" in your sets. Then make plenty of room in your head for the woozy horns and skittering jazz drums of "Luxury Of Sadness". Immense innovation.

Cat: AKO 10008. Rel: 04 Sep 20
  1. Stargazers (9:31)
  2. Cerebral Junglist (5:14)
Review: Right in the midst of celebrating their 25th anniversary, Stretch's AKO Beatz drop two stunners from OG Colin Lindo. The man best known as Nubian Mindz and also Alpha Omega, here we find him in his lesser spotted De Elite guise with two brand new pieces of timelessness. 'Stargazers' is built around a spine-chilling arpeggio wile beautiful brushed drums shake around a warm subby bassline. Flip for 'Cerebral Junglist', where the atmospheres are similarly chilling but the breaks are chopped and re-woven within snares of their lives. Immense.

Soundman Riddim
Cat: SSR 006. Rel: 10 Dec 20
  1. Soundman Riddim (4:51)
  2. Soundman Riddim (Yazzus cute Face remix) (4:52)
Review: Only 250 copies are available of this limited edition vinyl copy of Demagrafiks 'Soundman Riddim' on the Vinyl Fanatics sub-label. It's a sweet 10-", too, with drums that rock back and forth on their heels, muffed ragga toasts stitched deep into the mix and plunging bass that takes you into freefall over and over again. On the flipside is a fully speaker busting, distorted remix by Yazzus. The drums are manic, the echoing vocals barely decipherable, the fuzzing, fizzing, brain melting bass turbocharged and powerful. As it's mastered by NuTone, the sound is as good as you would expect.

Terra Incognita (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ADMM 55. Rel: 08 Sep 20
  1. Terra Incognita (6:33)
  2. Sub Conscious (5:30)
Review: Ant Miles and Andy C's Origin Unknown blueprint Desired State continues to proffer unreleased gold from the foundation era. This time we're taken back to 1994 for two of the deepest cuts they ever made together. Both rolling at around the 160 BPM mark, they capture that exciting crossover between hardcore and drum & bass with restraint, warmth and clarity. 'Terra Incognita' is the heavier piece with echoes of rave stabs and firm attention on the breaks while 'Sub Conscious' is a little more hypnotic and rolling with full focus on the percussion. Neither have seen the light of day for 26 years... Grab them while you can!

  1. Here Comes Mongo (5:20)
  2. Channel Tunnel (3:00)
  3. Top Banana Buzz Rush Junkie (5:49)
  4. Move & Groove (5:16)
Review: Diplomat has been involved in the industry in all kinds of ways over the years, most recently running Electro Avenue Records, but this his first release goes back to 1990 on Moving Shadow as part of Destruction Production before going solo in 1991 with this EP 'Here Comes The Mongo'. Fortunately the music has aged much better than the title as we're immersed in a rave wonderland with samples firing upside our senses at a rate of knots; from the hip-hop flavours and cascading stabs of the title to the ridiculous samples and musicality on the French love letter that is 'Channel Tunnel' (which would have only just opened at the time) this taps into a raw sense of fun and energy that captures the anarchy and open mindedness of the music at the time.

Review: Recently spotted shaking bones and souls on Inperspective, Dissident's 2017 Alphacut release gets a well needed reissue. Stepping between halftime, full pelt and ambient, the 12" is a vast bag of treats. "Flowhunt", "Soteria" and "Bricolage" all writhe around the snake-like halftime dynamic under heavy atmospherics, "Through The Eyes Of Ice" is a stark slice of beatless atmospherics while "Thelema" is a straight up neck-snapper. Glow big or glow home.

Review: DJ Central presents three new aliases on this elegantly put together 12". Conjuring up the perfect recipe for a DJ Cake, Central blends and explores the likes of pulsating atmospheric techno on the track "Balast", smoothly escalating breaks on "Ko Ko Dak Dak" and hazy crackling ambient on the finale "Daeksel". Unique, inspiring and truly excellent works from the one they call DJ Central.

Review: Reissue time! As New York jungle pillars Liondub International celebrate 10 years they've put together some of the hardest hitting bangers of their previous "Jungle To The World" collections on this powerful piece of wax. All the right vibes in all the right places, these all sound future fresh: DJ Hybrid's swashbuckling Dread bass backflips on "Special Request", the absolute bashy bless from Horace Andy and Marcus Visionary on "Sound Killer", the warmer reggae soul bubbles of Visionary's "Hustlin" and Truespirit's purring late 90s two-step homage "Deep In The Jungle". No filler in sight whatsoever.

Review: Pow! Bristolian don Krust returns. Gracing a new Tempo series Speed, he comes bearing two heavyweight techno-inspired bulldozers. "Fundamentalist" is all about the rhythmic stabs and off-beat waves. A real tension riser with a sudden mood switch midway. "Another Story" is a dubbier affair, steppy in the drum department with big synthy washes. Rooted but rebooted for the paranoid age: Krust never fails.

  6. LGTM (Simoncino bonus beat) (2:53)
Review: Dona's Plant Texture lays down more fresh produce in the form of the left-sided Italian beat selection. Dona takes the A-side with three versions; his RaveONine blend is a warped, woozy joint that tips a subversive nod towards to the trippier side of Detroit, his jungle mix lives up to its name with some classic breakwork while the Slow08 version takes us right into the middle of a gluey dancefloor, all slo-mo and sedative. Flip for three twists from fellow Italian Simoncinco; a wriggling acid groove, a thundering bleep-style dub and some rolling 909 drums for add creative mix pleasure. What a package. Ready for takeoff?

Cat: AKO 150010. Rel: 15 Oct 19
  1. Dem Want It (VIP) (4:24)
  2. Ganja Dub (5:39)
Review: Back to 94! AKO bossman Stretch digs deep into the DAT vault for these hefty piece of jungle dubplate history. "Dem Want It (VIP)" is all about those rolling percussive breaks and that bulging sub. Minimalism with clarity and soul, this still pokes the hell out of systems to this day. "Ganja Dub" on the B brings a little more soul to the jam with some beautiful keys before dropping back into Stretch's signature ruffage, sub-led sound. Released as part of AKO Beatz 150th release celebrations - and already sold out on picture disc - neither track have seen the light of a full vinyl release until this year, yet both sound as future as they did 25 years ago. Beatz working.

  2. My Soul (6:04)
Review: Te spirit of jan and weed smoking culture loom large over this banging new 12" from Mined. On first missive 'Smoker's Anthem' by DJ T Cuts, Blackout JA delivers impassioned words about ganga, including plenty on the joys and delights it can bring. Beneath his raw delivery are visceral breakbeats, crashing hits and driving bass to hammer home the point. Flip it over and 'My Soul' is a much more laidback vibe, with liquid beats and bass, dreamy pads and gentle pianos all soothing the soul for a more relaxed smoking session... until it all explodes to the next level that is.

Cat: 117LP 004S. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Active (6:50)
  2. Shack (6:05)
Review: Amazingly, despite founding 117 Records in 2013, DJ Trace only now puts out a first solo record on the label. On it, he gets deep into a rolling techstep sound that harks back to a 90s rave but with very modern production. The beats hit hard, the synths drill deep, and the energy is kinetic. These darkened tunes reflect the dystopian and uncertain world in which we live, but at the same time offer a great place of solace from it all. This sampler actually comes ahead of a six track 2x12" gatefold that will be presented on clear vinyl, and is a great taster.

  2. What I Was Doing When I Was Doing What I Was Doing (8:30)
Review: As Djrum, Londoner Felix Manuel has exclusively restricted his output to the 2nd Drop label - remember that immense debut album Seven Lies from 2013??? Absent from the shelves of record shops since April last year, Manuel resurfaces here with some much needed material, not for 2nd Drop but Geoff Presha's ever on point Samurai Red Seal endeavour. If you are a Felix fan this partnership makes perfect sense and hopefully we will see more Djrum music given the Samurai Red Seal! Premium beat science is evident on both cuts here, with the little graffiti can shakes on the epic 8 minute A side "Plantain" a nice touch. Hit the superbly titled flip "What I Was Doing When I Was Doing What I Was Doing" for a more abstract, dank basement affair.

Review: Let's dance! One of Dom & Roland's most brazenly funky tracks turns 20 this year and he's given it a cheeky limited press 1-up. With its crucial sample craft, oceanic waves of breakbeats and 1.21 gigawatt bass shreds, "Can't Punish Me" is still an absolute weapon two decades later. As is the previously unreleased dubplate version that gives the track a whole new suit of drum armour and much more dramatic and fleeting use of the sample. What do you live for?

Review: The roustabout previously known as dRamatic returns to Kemet with four more authentic jungle bruisers. 'Vanity' sets skank phasers to stun with its sweet and sour chops between sunny-side reggae samples and rambunctious breakbeats. 'Hey Boy' follows suit but with a big diva vocal adding the smooth polish to the roughhouse breaks. Flip for more ruffage as 'It's Like' brings on the big soul swoons over more finely diced and spliced breaks and 'Final Sound' shuts us down with a bubbling, beat-focused groove that wouldn't go amiss in Breakage's current armoury. Savage.

Review: Hide your crisps mate, Dub Phizix is back on the loose. Kicking off the year in true understated, straight-to-business style, as always with Mr Phizzy, each cut tells its own story and packs its own unique style. 'Game Over' is reminiscent of Die's early work. Jazzy flourishes and drums that skip from here to Clifton. 'Slush Puppeh' is not the sugar-rush you might expect from the title. Proper drum business here, there's a proper tribal edge to this one that nods towards the early Virus sound but much, much more stripped back and more techno-minded. Finally we have 'Bunraku', another bruiser with more warm fuzz around the bottom end than your ma. Game on.

Review: Czech label Detach launched back in 2015 with some low key firepower from Moll+, and now they're back with a split release that showcases some fiery upcoming talent in the field of experimental electronica. The sound DYL is exploring on "Phrases" is rabid and deconstructed, but equally bristling with analogue energy. Senking jumps in with DYL for the more rhythmically structured "Destroyed City Lights", which balances sweet and savage tones beautifully. DYL and DB1 create a stern, percussion led variation of electro on "Uniformity Of Nature" and Senking's solo piece "Launch" jettisons off into misty blue pools of synthetic expression, making this a record that surprises and satisfies at every turn.
