Cat Chasing The Mouse
Cat Chasing The Mouse (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: CITB 011. Rel: 08 Feb 24
Donnie Murdo - "Anonymouse" (5:39)
Donnie Murdo - "Mice N Easy" (6:08)
Tommy The Cat - "Just So You Know" (5:19)
Pastaman - "Fear" (5:08)
Review: Hats off for the cool cats! Tommy's CITH imprint whips up a hefty VA EP to kick off 2024 with and the vibes are set to max. Donnie Murdo makes sure of this with two cuts on the A-side: the sassy, soulful jungle flex 'Anonymous' and the ravier charms of 'Mice N Easy'. Meanwhile on the B-side, Tommy joins the fray with the big breakbeat bliss of 'Just So You Know' before Pastaman serves up fire in the form of 'Fear' on the finale. Flaming!

The Arptazia EP
The Arptazia EP (hand-stamped 12" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: SOFR 011. Rel: 12 Sep 23
Liquid Silk - "Arptazia" (6:24)
Thumbzo - "Levitation" (7:06)
Liquid Silk - "Visions" (6:44)
Thumbzo - "Infinite" (7:06)
Review: Liquid Silk and Thumbs take two tunes each, one on either side of this new 12" from the fledgling Sonic Force label. It arrives in mega limited quantities and is a hot platter, to say the least: Liquid Silk's 'Arptazia' opens up with edgy and restless loops of busted beats and flapping snares, glassy meodies and distant pads that swirl round to bring some soul. Thumbzo brings some jazzy depths to his stylish 'Levitation' while the B-side opens up with another clatter of drums and percussion from Liquid Silk with his 'Visions' which eventually comes to life with some mellifluous and magical keys. Thumbzo is left to shut down with the dusty jungle breakbeats and sci-fi pads of 'Infinite'.

MsDos - "Belfry"
MsDos - "Visions"
Tommy The Cat - "Late Night Cats"
Tommy The Cat - "A Shoulder To Lean On"
Review: After six releases from the Dutch label Cat In The Bag, the cat is very much out of the bag for drum & bass fans. This latest transmission - another one in the Park Sessions series is pure cat nip right from the off. MsDos takes care of the a-side with 'Belfry', a lively but silky rhythm with bleeping cosmic synths and smeared solar winds while 'Visions' is both deeper and more physical with its melancholic chords. Tommy The Cat then steps up on the flip with 'Late Night Cats' with its edgy and endless amen breaks and 'A Shoulder To Lean On' going for a slow motion beatdown for the late night hours.

Top Shelf Material EP
Top Shelf Material EP (hand-stamped 12" + insert)
Cat: QUOTH 2. Rel: 14 Nov 23
Pearl River Sound & The Horn - "Modular Grime" (3:35)
Pearl River Sound - "Funeral Acid" (4:21)
The Horn - "The Hunt" (4:36)
The Horn - "Commander Klutz" (4:35)
The Horn - "Commander Klutz" (Pearl River Sound Mad version) (5:56)
Pearl River Sound - "MPC Groovy" (4:46)
Review: The second release from Alex Egan's Utter sub label Quoth finds a link-up between Pearl River Sound and The Horn - two outlier operators with plenty to say when their machines collide. Pearl River Sound has been scattering outstanding releases on Further, Seagrave and Further Electronix amongst others, while The Horn comes from serious Devon techno heritage having cut his teeth on Evolution back in t'day. This is all about upfront material though, with a tendency towards microtonal braindance that veers from the self-explanatory collaboration 'Modular Grime' to solo forays into off-kilter, acidic electro funk. Nowhere near as derivative as a lot of current braindance, this is real freaked-out electronics for those with discerning taste.

Looking Out EP
Looking Out EP (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: RUPLDN 024. Rel: 19 Oct 23
Anda (5:44)
Extract (5:25)
Sooth (5:30)
Looking Out (6:56)
Review: The latest d&b sermon on Rupture is a collaboration from two devoted practitioners of the craft - Pugilist and Tamen. Holding it down for Western Australia's scene, they've linked up for a number of releases in recent times, turning heads with their drop on Dext which no doubt helped fan the flames for this knockout EP. There's expertly woven tension on mid-pressure 'Anda' and pin-prick threads of percussion punctuating 'Extract', while the textural sound design is just as subtle and refined. This is subtle but incredibly effective d&b of the highest order, as if you'd expect any less from a new release on Rupture.

Half Stab
Half Stab (10")
Cat: WNCL 041. Rel: 26 Apr 23
Half Stab (5:41)
Full Stab (5:08)
Review: Fresh from his mind-melting album Terraform on Yuku late last year, Tenebre returns to his heavier breakbeat roots with this killer dancefloor dispatch on WNCL. Going in hard on the breaks both 'Half Stab' and 'Full Stab' go all-in with no compromises. Both armed with big distorted, bruising basslines, the former is characterised by dubby echoes and shattering breaks while the latter eases up on so many of the bouncing bass hits lets the breaks do more of the talking.

Kaleidoscope (7:17)
Mystery Train (6:54)
Review: Okbron haven't slipped out any information about Theomega around this new release, but at this point the label's reputation is more than enough to draw you in for a listen. Curiosity will undoubtedly be piqued as soon as you hear 'Kaleidoscope' rolling out, but you'll be equally satisfied by how fresh it sounds. Somewhere past pure atmospheric chill and into dexterous backroom d&b, the programming is light as a feather and the mix is beautifully spacious, giving you ample room to marvel at all the angles from this hitherto unknown producer. 'Mystery Train' continues the trend on the B-side - even the flute samples are on point.

Humble In The Jungle (VIP) (4:37)
Pain (Hazardous) (VIP) (6:47)
Review: It's VIP o'clock at AKO Beatz HQ as the one and only Threshold turns up with two boosted up gems from his catalogue. First up is the brilliantly titled 'Humble In The Jungle'. Originally released in 2019, here we find the drums super zooped up with a few twists to the bassline and energy. Flip for the aptly titled 'Pain'. Originally a collab with Stretch back in 2015, here we find it under complete VIP scrutiny with full rebuilt on that face melting bass. What a wallop.

Waveform 07 (5:21)
Waveform 08 (6:01)
Review: Waveforms is a brand new label spearheaded by ASC and Presha who the already revered minds behind Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music respectively. They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. And right from the off the man who never misses, Tim Reaper, transports us back to the driving breakbeats and raw energy of that time with a pair of tunes that layer up a flurry of snares and booming low ends with wiry synths the sense of futurism that still holds true to this day. Sure to captivate old-school heads and new listeners alike.

20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 4
Cat: PHONICA 038. Rel: 29 Nov 23
Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone - "Subterranean" (5:25)
Toby Tobias - "On My Mind" (Freak mix) (5:27)
Shy One - "Uncle G" (4:33)
Kieran Jandu - "From My Soul" (6:15)
Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Happy anniversary Phonica.

Three Colour Portrait EP
Cat: FTNTS 011. Rel: 20 Nov 23
Three Colour Portrait (feat Trail) (5:19)
Culprit (4:50)
Delicate Steps (4:52)
Infinite Blue (feat LSB) (4:37)
Review: As Tokyo Prose, Sam Reed has been flying the flag for liquid d&b in New Zealand for a long time now. He's graced some of the biggest labels in the game, from Samurai to The North Quarter, Hospital to Soul:r, and now he's back with a new drop for LSB's Footnotes label. As you might expect, Three Colour Portrait is shaped out by the crispest of d&b drums and sumptuous melodic content, but Reed knows how to edge some individuality into his take on the liquid tradition. There's an understated poise to the title track, while 'Culprit' hits a subtle, melancholic note which will keep the track lingering in your mind for a long time to come.

Review: Samuel van Cleef returns as Tommy The Cat, one of the Netherlands' foremost jungle evangelists whose rise to prominence over the past four years is a phenomenon unto itself. It's not hard to understand why when you hear the grade of gear he's shelling out, returning to his Cat In The Bag label with this heavyweight double pack pressed on luxury red marble wax. From the space-age majesty of 'Along The Rooftops' to the roughneck break chops and heads-down dubbiness of 'Make Some Noiz' this is gold-standard rave gear from one of the best doing it right now.

Where It Begins
Review: Rejoice! Technimatic return with their fourth studio album For All Of Us and it's another stunning immersive trip into some drum & bass's most musical and soulful corners. Always keeping the perfect balance between dreamy and dancefloor, flavours range from the mischievous rave twists of 'Coming Back' to the hazy halftime swoons of 'You Call Me' by way of rich DRS-fronted soul ('Risk Everything') and rattling feel-good Creative Source style liquid ('Moment To Moment') With less featured vocalists and more focus on timeless drum & bass vibes that they first made themselves known with, this is arguably one of Technimatic's best albums to date.
