Steel Circuit Chronicles Volume 1
Steel Circuit Chronicles Volume 1 (blue & white splattered vinyl 12")
Cat: G2G 022. Rel: 07 Feb 24
Blame - "Robot Revolution" (6:04)
Sync Dynamix - "Don't Give Up" (6:43)
Flatliner - "Desire" (6:29)
Review: Good 2 Go bite down hard into 2024 with a brand new series entitled Steel Circuit Chronicles. A concept that sounds as good as its title suggests, we kick off with this exceptional deep jungle triple-header. The legendary Blame takes the lead with the percussive slab of drama that is 'Robot Revolution', a cut that packs some serious layered drum welly. He's backed up all the way by two more impressive individuals; G2G bossman Lee Croucher dons his Sync Dynamix alias for the atmospheric dream 'Don't Give Up' while mid 90s Ram artist Flatliner ends his own hazy, cosmic twist to conclude the EP. Timeless and stunning.

Coco Bryce - "Mantra" (5:23)
Forest Drive West - "Neptune" (6:27)
Review: Rupture is dropping a couple of special 12"s this month, and this purple marbled slab is one of them. It's a split between two bona fide studio wizards that kicks off with the ever excellent Netherlands producer Coco Bryce on 'Mantra. As ever it is a meticulously designed sound with precision tooled breakbeats creating a cacophony below ambient pads and atmospheric vocals. On the flip is the minimally minded bass and techno talent Forest Drive West with a lithe jungle workout packed with next level sound designs and intricate drums.

Amen Track (Atonal 2016 version) (5:26)
Conclusion (Atonal 2016 version) (4:36)
Six Days (Atonal 2016 version) (6:05)
Outro (Atonal 2016 version) (2:08)
Research (Rural 2016 version) (4:18)
Review: The Nullpunkt label is fast approaching its 25th release but first comes this fearsome outing from F&E. The third installment in the Forschung & Entwicklung series comes on grey vinyl and does not mess about with five more cuts all served up as Antal or Rural versions from 2016. The first rides on rusty jungle breaks, the second, 'Conclusion', is an atmospheric piece with a minimal rhythm and warped synth daubs while 'Six Days' is a dark and heavy piece of ambient techno dystopia. 'Outro' is the lightest and brightest piece of synth work on the EP then 'Research' brings back the jungle techno with more serrated synths and loopy, jagged rhythms.

Champion Of Champions (part 2)
Stop Pushing
Bonus (Dud Plate mix)
Review: Time for another reissue from the mighty Kemet, one of the sturdiest pillars of the original jungle foundations. Here we find them celebrating the contributions and pure skill of James Stephens' FOI alias with this champion slab from 1994. 'Champion Of Champions' brings a strong sense of triumph before murking you up with the vocal layers and cut-glass edits. Deeper into the EP we hit version central as the other two cuts utilise elements of 'Champions' in different ways; 'Stop Pushing' comes with the big euphoric blasts while the Bonus Dud Plate gives a different twist again. Pure entertainment.

Earth (4:05)
Akkumulator (Onar Anxiety version) (4:37)
Earth (Deconstruction By Forest Drive West) (6:09)
Sobriquet (feat John Elliot) (4:36)
Review: Berlin born Felix K is a music composer and producer with a sound perfectly befitting his hometown, as proven here on Nullpunkt. This is an EP of stylish techno for darkened basements - the drums are heavy but never lack funk, the synths are scuffed metal but full of soul and the whole ambience of the tunes is gritty, grey and lo-fi yet they are all hugely alluring and evocative. There is a spooky sense of unease in 'Earth' and real dub brilliance to 'Who Are You.' 'Sobriquet' is a more intense rhythmic exercise with many layers or interlocking sound while a Deconstruction By Forest Drive West of 'Earth' is late night techno minimalism par excellence.

Temperature's Rising (6:49)
Review: Future fusion flexing! We have no idea what FFF stands for but we certainly knows what he stands for musically as he steps up to ODJ Dizzy's strongarm Finnish platform Straight Up Breakbeat - ice cold broken beat science. 'Answers' will have you asking plenty of questions as he shoves us into a midtempo furnace and cooks us slowly in rave juices. 'Temperature's Rising' continues the theme with added 4x4s and a more stripped back arrangement that builds up into something very sinister indeed.

Titan (Back On The Case) (4:46)
Titan (feat KD & DJ Vindictiv - Dead City version) (5:07)
Review: Dutch hardcore label Sealand have tapped up legendary breakbeat antagonist FFF for a special 7' release which stays true to the rowdy, cut-up style both label and artist are known for. On the A-side, Tommy de Roos flies solo for 'Titan (Back On The Case)', a full-tilt raggacore explosion to set the dance alight in all the right ways. On the flip, we get a true insight into the hardcore culture from this part of the world as sealand's finest rapper KD and local scratch legend DJ Vindictiv jump on for a 'Dead City Version' of the track, marking the first time the old friends of FFF's have appeared on the same record as him.

Review: Rotterdam's FFF debuts on London label Rupture having made his mark at the party of the same name before now. He brings with him plenty of his hometown flavours with his Big Request EP and four different but equally compelling cuts. Known for infusing his sounds with diverse influences, the Dutch producer delivers something here that blends elements of dancehall, hardcore, and more. From hard-edged breaks to pure energy via what is for us the standout cut in 'Niceness,' there is a versatility and production prowess to this which makes it a fine debut.

FFF - "Dubplate Skankin'" (Duburban Jahganaut remix)
Tommy The Cat - "Smokey Places"
Review: Tommy The Cat continues to rain down the ruffest jungle in modern times with the launch of this Limited series on his label Cat In The Bag. This first release, which originally dropped in January 2023, gets a welcome repress so we can get our hands on the outrageously rowdy Duburban Jahganaut remix of ‘Dubplate Skankin’ by FFF. Meanwhile Tommy The Cat himself shores up on the B side with the atmospheric pressure cooker ‘Smokey Places’. Originally limited to 200 copies, now’s your chance to nab a re-up of this essential jungle goodness.

Fleck - "Lakes On Saturn" (Radiokillaz remix)
Riffz - "Can't Stop"
Vinyl Junkie - "Rudegal Dem"
Radiokillaz - "Time Again"
Review: Vinyl Junkie catapults a brand new label into the universe and his intention is loud and clear - Badass authentic jungle craftsmanship for the ages. He's rolling neck deep with kindred soldiers; Radiokillaz and Fleck get wild on the breaks on 'Lakes On Saturn', Riffz dusts off the detuned rave stabs for that aggy hardcore flavour while VJ himself whips up some delightful breakbeat switchery that melts into a dubwise breakdown for momentary respite. Radiokillaz close down the EP with a touch of soul on 'Time Again', a poignant space jazz joint laced with mournful strings and a yearning vocal. Meltdown.

Take Me As I Am (4:21)
Do 4 Love (4:09)
Long Way Up (4:51)
Enjoy The Silence (vocal version) (4:51)
Review: Based in The Netherlands, Fokuz Recordings has been a key drum & bass label since before the start of this current millennium. It does a wide range of styles from sold out in a flash r&b edits to rollers for the club. They have helped make the label head Focus a mainstay of the scene and now he's back with another top nugget on nice blue vinyl. 'Take Me As I Am' launches with hyper-speed breaks and ice-cold hi-hats before the lush and romantic 'Do 4 Love' soothes mind, body and soul. 'Long Way Up' is another one with a perfectly pitched r&b vocal sample and sleek beats before the pensive and late night, piano-laced cover of Depeche Mode that is 'Enjoy The Silence.'

All Of The Massive
What A Rush (feat MC Freddie Supreme)
Selectors On Rotation
Graveyard Slot
Review: Fracture is doing an incredible job drawing on the legacy of pirate radio as inspiration for his productions on the 0860 project. Beyond the hotly tipped mixtape comes this latest 12", featuring different shades of breakbeat pressure tooled to perfection by a truly dedicated head. 'All Of The Massive' was a stand out from said mixtape, and it's now available in all its glory, hard-edged and bleep loaded, primed to rinse any system you care to mention. 'What A Rush' is a smoother roller featuring MC Freddie Sup on lightly sprinkled toasting duties, while 'Selectors On Rotation' pays tribute to the role of adverts on the pirates in the framework of a nasty roller splashed with dub siren licks. 'Graveyard Slot' completes the release with a deeper cut in tribute to the early AM slots when the pirates would showcase more experimental sounds.

Legacy I (7:12)
Legacy II (6:10)
Review: Deep, meditative and synth-heavy new jungle choices from FTL. The likes of 'Meditation I' and 'Legacy' operate in the more classic jungle mode, remaining reliant on straight-up breakwork and less syncope. The real intrigues for us, however, are 'Technocrats' and 'Legacy', which are far more stuttery and go further in on the rhythmic layering, producing a set of unique, cyberpunkish aural hallucinations. It's an impressive addition to 3am Eternal, who are adepts at really fleshing out an older-school jungle sound.

Fushara - "Nightmares On Wax" (6:12)
Fushara - "Paranoid Park" (6:10)
Ben Kei - "Spatial" (6:25)
Ben Kei - "Aperture" (6:47)
Review: The second release from Fushara & Ben Kei's Constellations imprint brings more of the very same hard-hitting beats-and-basses; we've got blissed out, edgy sci-fi-vibed synths and huge spacious atmospheres, all of which were first heard on the first released. A delightful follow-up, these track are primed for headphone listening first and foremost, despite their (in our opinion) just-as-good club-readiness. First up, 'Nightmare On Wax' delivers a string of eerie cosmic horrors - dormant xenomorphic sonic eggs on a silver platter - by way of endlessly tricky breaks variations and soulful sampled wails into the silent void that is space itself. The creep factor continues into the B, with 'Paranoid Park', taking its namesake from the bleak emo film and bringing with it an intense combination of psychotic mutterings and gourd-string tremblings; Ben Kei's contributions, meanwhile, are weightier and sparser, dare we say harder-hitting; 'Aperture' comes as the "tribal" highlight, channelling a huge sense of weight in its bass stabs and well-rounded break.

Furious Frank - "Dripp" (4:15)
Review: The Paper Cuts label has been doing a fine job in putting out head-tripping club and chill-out styles for a fair stretch now and following the Ivy mixtape released earlier this year they're back with this outstanding split release from Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. Terenzi takes the A-side with her trademark line in electro-minded machine funk rhythms powering gorgeous back room moods, keeping the mix dubby and with plenty of ambient sparkle on top of the punchy drums. There's even space for a little d&b trippiness on 'Total Recall', which also features Noff. Furious Frank gets busy on the flip with 'Splash', a blissed out beatdowns with more than a little Balearic magic in its bones, while 'Moss Rock' turns the heat up for a distinctly 90s slice of acid trance. 'Dripp' seals the deal with another low slung roller from the chill-out room of your dreams.

Review: After the success of the first volume, Fabio returns to curate a second round of Generation Liquid featuring the absolute pinnacle of the liquid d&b sound. As a genre which gave rise to a tidal wave of imitators and formula followers, it takes the authority of a legend like Fabio to sift through and present the real deal, whether it's widely hailed classics or hidden treasures that help paint the picture. Soulful, uplifting and driven by d&b's relentless energy, this is another testament to liquid's vital role in the story of breakbeat evolution, featuring legends aplenty from High Contrast to Calibre, DJ Marky to Alix Perez.

Jonny L - "Oh Yeah" (5:56)
MJ Cole - "Sincere" (Marcus Intalex & ST Files remix) (7:48)
Review: Perhaps the spiritual successor of the Rage LP that made waves several years back, 'Generation Liquid' is a new series of compilations of soulful drum & bass tracks curated by Fabio, one of the pioneers and godparents of the genre. The 12" celebrates the legacy of his Speed, Swerve, and Liquid Funk events, and channels the spirit of his radio shows, collating works from Marcus Intalex, High Contrast, D Kay, and more. The mood of the compilation is unmistakable, and not one usually trodden in the world of nostalgic drum & bass reissues, with most of these tracks consisting of radio-ready emoters of the more polished kind, rather than the 'realist', 'raw' favourite of the day, liquid jungle.

He wastes no time in sweeping you off your feet with some electrifying synth work and almost juke like drum programming on the opener 'Axehead' and from there explores all manner of drum & bass sound worlds, from minimal steppers like 'Magnetic Mountain' to cosmic future funk workouts such as 'What We Once Where' and on to ice cold and warp speed gems like 'Curve of Forgetting.' Sensational work.
