Teardrops (7" limited to 200 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: ATV 703. Rel: 30 Jun 20
  1. Teardrops (3:39)
  2. Teardrops (Charlie Flat dub mix) (4:09)
Review: In recent times we've been treated to plenty of reissues of classic lover's rock gems, including an Athens of the North-released collection of lover's rock covers. It's therefore rather exciting to hear some brand-new lover's rock in a similar vein from Crucial Rockers, a studio band formed by producer Jamie Searle. The track given the cover treatment is Womack & Womack classic "Teardrops". While that was fiendishly uptempo, this version is sweet, slow and effortlessly soulful, with Searle's warming riddim offering a perfect match for the un-credited vocalist's fine delivery of the Womacks' weary and emotional lyrics. The flipside dub is rather tasty, too. Sadly there aren't many of these around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy!

Fire In My Heart (12" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: ISLE 001. Rel: 08 Jun 20
  1. Fire In My Heart (original mix) (5:14)
  2. Won't Be Your Fool (original mix) (5:23)
  3. Fire In My Heart (instrumental dub) (5:15)
Review: Escape From New York's 1984 cut "Fire In My Heart" has long been considered something of a Balearic classic. Original copies of the Rollerball Records release 12" are hard to come by, though, so this reissue is more than welcome. The original version - all slo-mo electro drums, rubbery dub bass, exotic melodies and intoxicating vocals - is joined by the now infamous Instrumental Dub version, which has been a staple in Balearic DJs' sets for more than 30 years. If that wasn't enough, there's also a chance to savour to woozy, dub-influenced synth-pop of original bonus cut "Won't Be Your Fool".

Review: Green Gartside is the Welsh frontman of cult band Scritti Polltti, here in solo mode on Rough Trade His latest 7" finally gets a release after various delays and on it are two covers of songs originally recorded by Anne Briggs, who is often regarded as one of the great British folk singers. The originals came out in 1971 on Briggs album The Time Has Come (and has also been re-released this year). In the hands of the so-called brainiest man in pop they become fresh propositions with interesting new perspectives.

Floatation: Special Request Remix (limited clear vinyl 12")
Cat: AL I3. Rel: 05 Jun 20
  1. Flotation (Paul Woolford Special Request remix - Full Length version) (12:55)
  2. Flotation (Paul Woolford Special Request remix - Richard Norris edit) (6:47)
Review: The Grid's 1990 track 'Floatation' is a stone cold post-rave comedown classic that epitomises the sound of chill out tents of the day. If anyone deserves to chill out a little right now, it's Paul Woolford, the hugely prolific beat maker, jungle mash up artist and bass face maestro who has put out multiple albums as Special Request in the last 12 months. Here he goes slow, deep and lush on his superb 12 minute version, with piano chords and breaking waves all soothing the soul. On the flip, Richard Norris, who was actually a part of The Grid, edits that remix into something even more smooth and sweet.

Review: Here's a record perfectly suited to the Emotional Rescue sphere. International Noise Orchestra was born out of a collaboration between Berliner Ulrich Homberg and Algerian drummer Jol Allouche, first embarked on in the 1980s when they sought to combine 'new technology with old'. The results are wonderfully vibrant, evocative of the era but also packed with open-ended experimentation that sounds fresh more than 30 years later. There's a push and pull between the collaborating parties, but the frisson between cultures and methods is where this record gets its unique groove from, all delivered with a slick 80s cool it's hard to resist.

Review: It's a while since we last heard from Knopha, a well-regarded rising star who impressed with his first two EPs on Push & Pull and Eating Music. Here he returns to action via a label debut on the freshly minted Chinese imprint Regret Sound. It's an attractively percussive, off-kilter and curiously psychedelic affair, with Knopha offering up two distinctively different tracks based around the same basic Afro-house style tribal rhythm track: the hallucinatory and feverish ambient house humidity of "Gym A", and the even more spaced-out, drum-heavy weird-out that is "Gym B". Bonus cut "Stretch", a drowsy, chiming and warming drift through echoing synth-ambient territory, is also superb. Recommended.

Cat: MYS 008. Rel: 11 May 20
  1. Cassiopeia (9:41)
  2. Cassiopeia (2019 remix) (11:18)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The Mysticisms label serves up a valuable reissue of the very first release from Nail, the long-serving UK house veteran as prolific now as he was back in the heyday of legendary Nottingham soundsystem DiY. "Cassiopeia" originally appeared on a compilation on Warp, but now it gets a full side of vinyl over which to unfurl its arcane 90s magic. Entrancing synth cascades and stuttering sampler mantras, throbbing b-lines and jacking claps all make for a holy grail deep techno track from the good old days, and Nail has given it a 2019 remix on the flip which brings the spiritual shenanigans of the original into a different kind of meditative, house-oriented context.

  2. Summer Madness (part 2) (2:37)
Review: Ubiquity is back with another of its two part 7"s, this time from contemporary soul group The Soul Surfers. Experts at covering the greats, they recently turned their hand to a classic from The JB's, while this time out it is Kool & The Gang's classic "Summer Madness" that gets a deep-cut and sexy make over. Part 1 is a sensuous slow burner with downtempo drums and heavenly guitar playing, while part 2 has harder drum grooves and dreamy , psyched-out guitars. It's another ageless rework that you need in your life.

Review: The translated title of this record from The Architect is "beach on the moon" and is a perfect way of describing the otherworldly balearic music that defines it. It is a truly widescreen affair that takes in a myriad of styles. Gently tumbling comedown drums overlaid with spoken word snippets, dreamy pads that drift off to an infinite horizon, and even some spaced out trap on "Run" feat. Raverie all make it a journeying album right from the off. Then there's also some contemporary folk, golden era hip hop and darker trip hop styles with further gets who lend lyrical wit to the well produced tunes.

Review: Some seven years after delivering his debut single, The Architect (the production alias of sometime French hip-hop scene stalwart DJ Mongkut) has finally finished his debut album. Inspired by the twin attractions of lazy aftetnoons on the beach and the cosmic potential of space travel, "Une Plage Sur La Lune" (a beach on the moon for those not versed in French) is variously psychedelic, deep, drowsy, hazy and surprisingly funky. It draws on the producers various inspirations - jazz, hip-hop, funk, trip-hop and, to a lesser-extent, reggae - to deliver a suite of vocal and instrumental tracks that recall the classic downtempo works of DJ Cam, Aim, Rae & Christian and Guru's Jazzamatazz project.

Review: It's been four years since Is It Balearic? dons Coyote last graced our faces with an album. As you'd expect from two learned heads at the helm of such a musically rich label, their own offerings are brimming with laconic grooves and heady instrumentation, ranging from the pastoral patter of "Shimmer Dub" to the folky flex of "Ranura De Marihuana". For the most part there's a steady beat driving the loping basslines and reverbed keys, but there's also space for more ambient excursions too. "Sun Culture" is a beautiful, meditative piece to drift away to before we slip back into some more pronounced funkers to close out the B side.

Review: Five years on from their last full-length excursion, Darkstar return with "Civic Jams", a socio-politically charged set that Warp says was influenced by two decidedly disparate musical inspirations: the opaque, slowly shfiting sonic density pf shoegaze, and 30 years of the British bass music continuum. In practice, that means a striking fusion of tactile vocals, drowsy electronics, wall-of-sound chords and crunchy, off-kilter rhythms that tip a wink to hip-hop, grime, dubstep, breakbeat and more, while never sounding specifically like any of them. It's not a club-focused set, but it an undeniably impactful one, primarily because its inherent bittersweet beauty and weary melancholia seems in tune with these unusual, claustrophobic times.

  2. Time (You & I) (5:46)
  3. Connaissais De Face (4:19)
  4. Father Bird, Mother Bird (3:05)

  6. Pelota (2:49)
  7. One To Remember (4:24)
  8. Dearest Alfred (3:58)
  9. So We Won't Forget (5:00)
  10. Shida (4:02)
Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: To get away from the 'one track after the other' compilation concept K&D checked in at Havlis Super Sound where their man Alex (don of the echo chambers) has a secret dub-laboratory. There K&D did a dub session on the selected tracks to inject some dynamics and life into it. They took two bottles of Highland Park whisky and their old dub-echoes from the cellar and did a smoked-out dub echo-orgy.

Review: Sam Eastgate might have made his name via Late of the Pier, but he proved solo abilities and then some with 'Inju', his own debut. He's now back with 'GENE', which sees him take individuality to greater heights by way of inventing, creating and playing his own unique instrument, which lends its name to the album. Throwing guitar licks, soft pads and compressed keys into the mix, the result is a psychedelic electronic explosion of colour and texture, along the lines of Neon Indian. Low slung glitch and piercing falsetto vocals build into a delicate but definite funk grooves, 'Open My Eyes' has an almost operatic quality to its chorus, underpinned with a techno-esque growling low end, and 'Rubber Sky' could almost be another David Byrne and X-Press 2 collaboration. Strutting, sparkling, rolling and crunching its way through three acts of innocence increasingly lost, this is electronic pop at its most impressive.

Review: Last year, Giegling regular Leafar Legov (real name Rafel Vogel) delivered his first ever full-length release, a low-key tape of lengthy ambient explorations entitled "Never Ending Beginnings". Six months on he returns with "Mirror", his "official" debut album. He sets the tone with the swelling orchestral ambience of "Intro", before brilliantly joining the dots between ambient and jazz on the wonderfully string-laden simmer of "Wave". As the album progresses, Vogel sashays between ultra-deep synth-pop, jazzy downtempo soundscapes, ultra-deep and hypnotic house, revivalist DJ Cam style trip-hop, ambient techno and more seductive, jazz-inspired late-night warmth. In other words, it's a rather fine album from an artist on the rise.
