Down That Road (hand-stamped 12" + insert Nachpressung)

  1. Down That Road (6:45)
  2. Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
  3. Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

  5. Loving Furlong (2:13)
Review: Bullion is a virtuoso pop producer who brings a different perspective. His 80s tinged poptimism has won him a hardcore fan base. He draws on dusky yacht pop, synth pop, blue eyed soul and fantasy sounds for his inspiration and distils them all into his own unique outlook. Here he makes a classy debut for US indie label Jagjaguwar and sets sail on the lullaby like 'Heaven Is Over. 'Strike A Light' brims with more lush melodies and retro-future sounds with his own vocals drifting up top. A real standout is the closer, 'Loving Furlong,' which is intimate and sincere and shows his songwriting at its best.

Cat: HR 008. Rel: 15 Dec 20
  1. The Mountain (Lexx remix) (5:31)
  2. The Mountain (Chris Coco remix) (7:41)
Review: Highwood Recordings bring together a pair of Balearic masters for this tidy two tracker just before the year is out. They both tackle 'The Mountain' by Cantoma and do so in very different ways. Lexx goes first and keeps things airy, lithe and playful with wispy synth motifs, catchy little ear worms and undulating drums that bring the tropical heat. Chris Coco goes for something a little more driving, some to get the party started after a long afternoon in the sun, but something that still retinas a lush musicality with its gentle flutes and soft tambourines.

  1. April Fools' Day (15:55)
  2. Bugged (11:24)
Review: It's been something of a defining year for Melbourne duo CS & Kreme. Better known to some as Conrad Standish and Sam Karmel, despite the wealth of problems that have faced artists in 2020, the pair finally unveiled their debut LP early in the calendar, cementing their status as two of Australia's most talented opiate-pop-dance producers. A fine starting point from which to release this double-A single.

It certainly has the confidence you'd associate with acts and outfits that have found their place in the grand scheme of musical things. 'April Fool's Day' is a poised and subtly tense slice of laidback suggestion, twangs of melody hanging on a feeling that's pure psychedelia. 'Bugged' takes things into funkier, break-ier terrain, all locked rhythms and head-nodding infectiousness. Downtempo goodness, to put that another way.

  2. Walpole Days (Joe Claussell Sacred Cosmic Arts Jam) (8:06)
Review: Sacred Rhythm founder Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell is a master of his own musical universe. It is spiritual, deep, and wrapped up in the sort of palpable feelings most producers can't ever dream of conveying. His trademark sound is here in all its glory on this new pair of remixes of 'Walpole Days' for Claremont 556. His Sacred Rhythm mix is all subtle pads and organic perc, majestic cosmic leads and classy chords that ooze a late night soul. Flip it over and you'll find a Sacred Cosmic Arts Jam that is only slightly different, with extra space given to the leads.

  5. Groovin Up Slowly (3:50)
  6. All Will Be Changed (1:17)
Review: International Noise Orchestra continue to get a thorough reappraisal from Emotional Rescue, the perfect vessel for such wayward 80s sounds. The global outlook of the German project continues apace with the wonderfully angular, Arabian-tinged take on 'Come Together'. From Fairlight CMI sampledelia to wiggy synth, guitars and drums jamming out on 'Vit Quai Don', this is a record that veers in sonic style with gleeful abandon. 'Marching In Time' slaps and slides like Prince jamming with Jah Wobble, and 'Bum Bum Krach (Hommage A Adele Sandrock)' is a particularly leftfield drum solo punctuated by curious growls. You won't hear another record that sounds quite like this one, that's for sure.

Review: Supremely laid back funksters Khruangbin are having a busy close to the year - not only have they put together a fine entry into the iconic Late Night Tales series, due in December, but now they've served up a sizzling festive 7". 'Christmas Time Is Here' is a serene dn starry eyed as usual from this Texan outfit, with glassy eyed chords and sweet, subtly funky bass. There are vocal coos on the a-side to add depth and warmth, and on the flip a dub is a little more paired back. Both tunes fill you with seasonal cheer and then some.

Cat: NW 6. Rel: 26 Nov 20
  1. Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus" (2:57)
  2. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John" (2:24)
Review: This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Review: My Friend Dario is a newly emerging talent in the Balearic beat making scene. He has impressed with his vital sounds covering a broad array of styles on labels like Hell Yeah and now makes his biggest statement to date with six superb tracks on Nunorthern Soul. It is a blissful affair from the off with the fluttering synths and delicate rhythms of 'Fenice' followed by more floor facing beats on 'Malvasia' and 'Mr Mellow.' The long legged drums then return with sunset vibes a plenty on 'Neve Su Acireale'. 'Campagna 2' shows off a nice deep house sound while 'Storm' is the thoughtful downtempo closer.

Cat: PARK 1033. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit (3:16)
  2. Summer Madness (4:01)
Review: Sometimes known as Inokasira Rangers, Park Rangers are a Japanese band who have spent much of the last decade releasing inspired but unlikely instrumental reggae covers of massive rock, pop and disco hits. This 7" single boasts two of their most popular covers, starting with a ridiculously cheery and almost hilariously cheeky version of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Built around a 1960s style rocksteady riddim, it's instantly recognisable thanks to the band's choice to track the tune of Cobain's lead vocal (which naturally isn't present) with a Hammond organ solo. On the flip you'll find a deep reggae-disco cover of Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness'; it's good, but nowhere near as fine as the surprising A-side.

  4. Value Of A Piece Taken (5:54)
Review:
Producer and stay-at-home-DJ Lauren Ritter unveils her own brand new label with this hard to define new releases that draws on techno, downtempo, indie and more. The opener 'Vespers' is an icy minimal groove with snaking hi hats and off-grid kick patterns. It's danceable but also mindful. She then links with Tenesha The Wordsmith for 'Thirst Trap', a pastoral ambient beauty with spoken words and more direct rhymes from JB!! aka dirty Moses. "Quartz' then cuts loose on a deep and dreamy house tip and 'Value Of A Piece Taken' rounds out an adventurous EP in skittish, flute laced broken beat style.

  3. ITO - "Citylights" (5:14)
  4. David Hanke - "Mirrorsides" (4:25)
Review: We're not quite sure about the story behind this EP - Bathurst have not made clear whether it's the first in a series, or whether there's a theme - but the music on show is well-worth checking. Zoe Leonard dons the Simmerdown guise on excellent opener 'Legitimacy', a slowly unfurling affair that craftily combines sun-kissed ambient electronics with cut-up, club-ready beats, gargantuan bass and 140 style vocal cut-ups. David Hanke delivers two contrasting cuts: the shuffling, bass-heavy, spacey-but-sleazy excellence of 'Deep Shit Part 3' as Black Soyls, and the cheerier and bouncier 'Mirrorsides' under his given name. Our favourite though is ITO's 'Citylights', a jazzy, slipped instrumental number full of beautiful piano flourishes and languid bass.

Review: Following up some great ones by Nutia, Lopal and JAJA, Berlin-based live musician Temple Haze joins the Tal der Verwirrung label. Fresh off his collaboration with Stil Vor Talent chief Oliver Koletzki, he presents a four-track debut vinyl full of mellow guitar, ethereal vocals and an intriguing, nebulous ambience. From the low slung island dream of 'Sylveren Soul' infusing neo-classical and deep house elements, to the vocal-led/pop-inflected downtempo ballad 'Wondering Why', there's also the moody and knackered shuffle of 'Movement'. Closing out the EP is the sun-kissed road trip balearica of 'El Mirador'

Review: Windsurfer's The Gone Village, from what we can tell, marks a debut release on Zurich outfit Phantom Island. It's a multi-genre record that draws on wave, synth and electro to make a new balearic sound perfect for gazing off into the distance. 'U Hell' is a mid tempo open with lavish chords and a busted bassline, while 'The Waves' manages to make future electro sound like an ancient ritual. The Kejeblos remix is perfect for back room club sets and 'We Live As A Dream' is an in trueing moment of innocence and calm. 'It's A Sony-Battery Love' is further proof that Windsurfer can really conjure up some fine emotions.

Review: New albums from Aussie fusionists the Avalanches don't come around that often, so the appearance of We Will Always Love you four years after its predecessor, Wildflower, is genuinely big news (it previously took them 16 years to record the follow-up to their acclaimed 2000 debut, Since I Left You). Somewhat predictably, they've hit the mark once more, supplementing their usual dense sample collages and multi-coloured, genre-bending compositions (a little psychedelia, Balearica and synth-pop here, a dash of dream pop, future R&B and synth-pop there) with vocals and musical contributions from a dizzying cast-list of like-minded guests (think Neneh Cherry, Johnny Marr, Jamie XX, Blood Orange, Tricky, Cornelius and Kelly Moran). Hard to pin down but royally entertaining from start to finish, We Will Always Love You is a triumph.

Review: Billy Ghost is the instrumental project of The Kickback singer and songwriter Billy Yost. The Purple Haunted Bathtub is the first full release from the producer, emphasizing his love of instrumental hip hop, antiquated sampling technology, and the VHS collection amassed by his five older brothers from which he cribs many of the vocal and dialog snippets that litter the album. In an already flooded "lofi" genre, Yost has sought to carve out a space by creating "definable hooks that hopefully bother you for days" over the top of his dusty drums. The Haunted Purple Bathtub is dedicated to Yost's dog, a shiba inu named Opal, who adorns the cover of the album.

Review: A cult Brazilian band at their peak in the 1980s, Finis Africae represent the pinnacle of what post punk and its experimental offshoots reached for in South America. A lot of this compilation focuses on sprawling tracks that feature distant shapeless vocals, lightly pattering percussion and languid guitar, but cuts such as "Radio Tarifa" shimmy with the upstart angles of disco-not-disco at its finest, shot through with a salsa flair. Twisting and turning from child-sung folk to industrial-tinged instrumentals, through slow-pumping indie jangle and so much more besides, you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised at many turns discovering one of the hidden gems of the other side of the world.

Review: Back in 2017, Damon G Roddick - yep, Dam-Funk himself - unveiled a new project on Music From Memory, Garrett. Since then, he's delivered two albums of evocative, melodious and, by his standards, melancholic synthesizer music that add a picturesque, almost Balearic tinge to his usually forthright synth-funk sound. Here he presents what he says is the third and final installment in the trilogy, once again painting colourful, emotive musical pictures with little more than a bank of vintage synths and a couple of drum machines. As you'd expect, it's as on-point, entertaining and enjoyable as its predecessors, delivering the kind of attractive, sofa-friendly synth sounds that are guaranteed to put smiles on stressed and miserable faces.

Review: Khruangbin might be the most logical and fitting choice for a Late Night Tales compilation in recent memory. The Texan psychedelic chill artists have always had a sense of the exploratory and unknown running through their blissful grooves, and the fundamental idea behind this series was always about opening up doors to new musical discoveries for listeners.

In many ways, the Houston trio have gone above and beyond. Melding a breadth of sounds that have emerged from an equally diverse set of cultures, we visit Hindi-disco, South Korean rock, African bass, Belarusian folk. Capped off with an exclusive version of Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness' conceived by the compilers themselves, it's a case of 15 gateway tracks all of which belong to artists and genres that are crying out for you to dive in.

Review: Foam On A Wave is a brand new London-based reissue label. Its first offering is a carefully dug out delight from Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond aka Ultramarine, one of the UK's foremost ambient techno artists. Folk is a seamless weaving together of "unique instrumentation and sonic influences into rich, ethereal soundscapes" that have all been fully remastered for this 30th anniversary release. Mixing up organic and synthetic sound is what this pair did best and this album has a kaleidoscopic pallet drawn from Canterbury's jazz-infused psychedelia, the contemporary Benelux scene, and plenty in between. It manages to be both thoughtful and playful, serious yet irreverent, and has aged as well as a fine wine.

Review: It was way back in 2008 that multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker Hiroto Uyama first released debut album A Son of the Son, a sparkling, emotion-rich set that set out his jazz-meets-hip-hop fusion blueprint. Now available on vinyl for the very first time (it was previously only available on CD and digital download), the set sees Uyama combine jazzy piano motifs, striking strings and additional jazz instrumentation (think clarinet, flute etc) with head-nodding beats, dust-encrusted samples and occasional rap vocals courtesy of Pase Rock and Golden Boy. It's a formula that worked wonderfully first time round and still does now, thanks in no small part to Uyama's ability to deliver hazy, laidback and life-affirming thrills throughout.

Review: 189 months ago, the team behind the excellent Too Slow To Disco compilations inaugurated a new offshoot series, Too Slow To Disco Neo, in order to showcase contemporary nu-disco sounds. The first edition focused on French music that fit in with their atmospheric, slow-motion aesthetic; this belated follow-up, on the other hand, is all about sun-kissed Balearic beats and summery nu-disco grooves. It's a simple idea, executed well, with the collection's multitude of highlights including the Latin-tinged sunset disco bliss of Yuksek's 'Do Beijo', the '80s soul-meets-future R&B shuffle of Moods, the super-slick synth-boogie of Prep's 'Love Breaks Down' and the blue-eyed soul haziness of Private Agenda's sugary 'Step'.
