Felix Dickinson & Jamie Read - "Restless People" (Max Essa remix)
Review: Two of the UK's finest underground labels join forces and share their talent on this killer 12. From IIB we have Coyote's Sin Distracciounes, an upbeat sunkissed dancefloor meditation featuring the blissed out Flamenco guitar of long time collaborator Saro Tribastone. Futurboogie's Christophe remixes and chops up the guitar and adds some gypsymenesque organ stabs and layers of keys. Futureboogie's Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read drop the funky guitar heavy Restless People. Sublime chugging beats and a beautiful vocal refrain imploring 'Slow It Down' creating a laidback house monster. IIB's Max Essa puts his remix right in the middle of the dancefloor with straight up house vibes and extra percussion.

DJ Steef - "Warp Odyssey"
Review: Hot'N'Spicy's self-titled series of flame hot disco and funk gems returns with a sizzling sixth instalment here and it has some big names on board. Delfonic opens up with the low slung and seductive loopy disco-house fun of 'Everything Is Love' while HOLDTight up the funk and energy with more loose and percussive grooves on 'Disco Power.' Franck Roger brings his classy French house styling to a deep and slinky number in 'Pinguino Blumo' and DJ Steef shuts down with some big camp disco flourishes and dubbed-out vocal echoes on 'Warp Odyssey.'

No Stars EP

No Stars
One Hundred Years Deep
Review: In the first of three EPs for Warm collective's own label, Face & Heel are a Cardiff based duo settled in an interesting midway point between indie pop and electronica that behaves like techno while seemingly fitting in with the more emotional end of the dubstep aftermath. On "No Stars" the pitched-up vocals duel with rounded bass pressure and a gossamer beat while the main melodic content comes on thick and dramatic. "One Hundred Years Deep" takes a more polite stance as (presumably) Sinead McMillan's vocals come through clean and untreated while the track operates in a similar headspace to Clams Casino.

She Sleeps (original)
She Sleeps (radio edit)
She Sleeps (Gang Gang dance remix)
She Sleeps (Ital remix)
Review: "She Sleeps" made for a welcome surprise on Hardcourage, Falty DL's recent Ninja Tune released album, calling on Friendly Fires vocalist Ed McFarlane to add his immediately recognisable warbles to a glistening production. It's obvious single material - with the radio edit here adding further credence - and the wonderful original is further complemented by remixes from two of Lustman's fellow New York dwellers in Gang Gang Dance and Ital. The former is delightful, adding unforeseen layers of ecstasy to McFarlane's vocals amidst a clopping beat and tropically infused melodic lead, whilst Ital goes in entirely the opposite direction, turning in a sludgy, strung out malfunctioning slab of techno.

Set You Free

Set You Free (long version) (11:51)
Mellow (6:08)
Life (4:00)
Review: Earlier in the year, rare and unissued soul specialists Cordial Recordings offered up a fine album of previously unreleased recordings by Family of Swede, an obscure Oakland, California-based band who were briefly active in the mid 1970s. The label has now decided to follow this up by releasing the full, near 12-minute recording of album highlight 'Set Me Free', a deliciously spacey, slow-motion cosmic soul number that sounds like a Californian stoner's take on some of Cymande's most laidback and intergalactic work. It's rather brilliant all told, as is flipside opener 'Mellow', a synth-laden trip through up-tempo space-funk territory that's as infectious as Covid 19 at a student house party. 'Life', a funky slab of blue-eyed soul brilliance, completes a must-have EP.

Solar Surfing (8:24)
Native Power (5:35)
Avocado Conception (4:59)
Review: Given that Fantastic Man's last outing on Kitjen, 2016's "Galactic Ecstasy", was one of his more interesting and on-point releases to date, hopes are high for this belated return to the German label. First up in "Solar Surfing", a spacey affair built around stuttering machine drums, intergalactic electronics and a thickset bassline. Acid-fired workout "Native Power" follows, with psychedelic TB-303 lines and minimalist bleeps riding a flowing electro groove, before closing cut "Avocado Conception" sees the Australian combine Balearic-minded synthesizer flourishes and bubbly acid lines with a slower groove. Like the rest of the EP, it's ear pleasing but surprisingly off-kilter.

El Tropo EP

Snake Charmer
Donkey Punch
El Tropo
Birds Of Paradise
Review: Mic Newman, or otherwise known as the one and only Fantastic Man, returns to Fine Choice Records with yet more of his very own organic house music. With previous outings on Wolf Music and Let's Play House, among others, Fantastic Man has now weaved his way into dance music's epicentre and his tunes have been coveted by the likes of London's Tief and Feel My Bicep crews. "Snake Charmer" is a tropical house lick complete with monkey sounds and all, whereas "Donkey Punch" is somewhat of a hybrid thanks to its broken beat pattern and oddball bassline - what a peach! Over on the B-side, "El Tropo" is an uber deep cut with a rather lovely set of Balearic melodies, but the real treat is "Birds Of Paradise" thanks to its utter neglect of a 4/4 beat pattern. Instead, Newman creates a tight, functional groove out of sparse and airy flurries of sound. Recommended.

Dream Machine

Fountain Gate (7:13)
Dream Machine (6:12)
St Elmo's Theme (6:32)
Review: Having made his name making decent deep house, Fantastic Man appears to be following in the footsteps of fellow Melbourne export Tornado Wallace and pursuing a far more Balearic, kaleidoscopic sound. Certainly, Dream Machine is arguably his strongest EP to date, delivering a trio of cuts that expertly fuse Italo, Scandolearic and new age influences. There's naturally much to admire, from the lilting melodies, tactile proto-house rhythms, Italo attitude and bubbling synth bass of "Fountain Gate", to the marimba-clad breeziness and chiming tunefulness of "St Elmo's (Theme)". The title track, a study in early deep house melodiousness, is also pretty impressive.

Fantastic Man - "Lather Of Heaven" (7:30)
Layered Moods - "Z" (8:18)
Absis - "Sara" (8:11)
Steve Pepe - "Tribalone" (5:21)
Review: Spain's premier outlet for quirky house and techno lines up to that fine reputation once again here with a second Fragments EP from a fine crew of studio talents. Fantastic Man's "Lather Of Heaven" opens proceedings with lush synth ripples layered up over rubbery, rolling drums to make for a trance inducing gem. Layered Moods gets more unhinged with his cavernous exploration of rhythm and Absis slows things down to a delicious dub crawl. Steve Pepe brings some shamanistic rituals to his rather spooky and tribal number "Tribalone" to complete a fascinating EP.

Tidens Tand (6:43)
Effeckt (3:45)
Stillhetens Hav (3:46)
Vattern (2:24)
Review: Juan Taramera's Back To The Balearics imprint runs out of Ibiza (naturally!) and has previously released the likes of Max Essa, Maricopa and Spleen: so you can trust he knows what he's doing. This time it's Stockholm's Fabror Resande Mac, who appeared previously on the label in 2014 with the Magma EP. On the A side "Achilles" gallops away slowly and eloquently in minimal fashion, the perfect intro for the wonderfully summery and Balearic (yep!) "Tiddens Tand" that you could imagine hearing on a beach in Tisno, Croatia circa '86.. or 2016 for that matter. On the flip "Effeckt" is bitter and melancholic, like something from a forgotten old film soundtrack, while final track "Vattern" is a creepy and sinister minimal synth jam that closes out this imaginary short film, just perfectly.

Review: Aficionado welcome Swedish space cadets Farbror Resande Mac to their cause with the simply titled five track EP, a superb excursion into gently billowing Balearica. You may well know these Scandinavians from fine outings on Mystic & Quantum and Is It Balearic last year, and this new record suggests Farbror Resande Mac is a project we could happily hear alot more from. "Hagringen" would be perfect music to soundtrack the mooted Bladerunner sequel, a delay laden epic that manages to instil a sense of intensity whilst retaining an air of effortless grace. The mood veers off into different areas from here, with cosmic moments ("Chemtrails" and "Pacific Northeast") matched by downbeat funk ("Quaaludes") and guitar laden journey's into '80s soft rock ("Stockholmsnatt"). A Balearic DJs wet dream, this one.

Review: Stuffed Monkey dip into Interstellaires, the 10th studio album from sultry flame-haired provocateur Mylene Farmer, to pick out "City Of Love" for 12" issue. "City Of Love" oozes synth soul charm with a mild pop edge and just the right amount of floatiness for it to achieve Balearic status. The instrumental, however, is straight up sunset whichever way you look at it. Spacey percussion, evocative chord changes and all-round feel good vibes, save this one for the sunset.

Floating World (Chuggy's Dub) (7:35)
Review: The Faze Action brothers released their fifth studio album entitled "Body Of One" last year and to continue the celebration they have recruited some heavy weight talents to give their spin on three tracks from that album. First, the brothers take on the remix duties of "Magic Touch", giving it a dub house reboot that could be the sound track to countless sunsets this summer. Next up is a deft dub mix of the same track by Maxidiscs cohort and globe trotting DJ, Dicky Trisco. On the flip side we have the Balearic powerhouse that is Phil Mison, remixing "Echoes Of Your Mind" into an electronic, down tempo feast with additional Bass, Guitar and Keyboard played by the man himself. The final mix on this 12" is provided by "Emotional Response" curator and head honcho Stuart Leath under his Chuggy guise, delivering an organic dub mix of Faze Action's "Floating World"

Review: Faze Action teams up with Nina Miranda for the jazzy disco tones of "Vamos Pintar", and the results are magic. This is unabashedly joyous, flamboyant dance music rich with vibraphone licks, synth stabs and a catchy vocal hook about painting, which Max Essa then slows down to a Balearic strut on his "Slo Mo Bubble Dub" mix before offering up a more energetic "Extended Club Mix". The real gem on the record comes on the B2 "Paradise 90 Dub", which faithfully champions the Larry Levan school of party music, and everyone knows that means guaranteed club heat.

Sununguka (Alan Dixon Italo mix) (7:27)
Sununguka (Special extended dub mix) (5:43)
Review: Faze Action have been on a roll with their collaborative project with Zeke Manyika, which first started up in 2016 and now reaches its fourth installment with the infectiously uplifting "Sununguka". In its original form the Afro-house burner artfully blends Manyika's Zimbabwean roots with Faze Action's knack for '80s tinged proto-house. "Rwendo" is a more laid back affair compared to the lead track, but it's no less effervescent thanks to Manyika's vocals. On the B side, Alan Dixon drops a feisty Italo version of "Sununguka" that sounds purpose built for spine-tingling sundown moments, while there's also a pumped up "Special Extended Dub" version to appeal to headsy DJs looking to keep the floor running at full tilt.

Kubatana (Rudy Midnight Machine mix) (6:12)
Kubatana (Paradise dub) (5:26)
Review: Faze Action last teamed up with Zeke Manyika, formerly of 80s funksters Orange Juice, for the effervescent "Mangwana" back in 2016. Now they're back in collaboration for more classically rooted house music with a deeply infectious African twist. "Kubatana" is punchy where it counts, but it's a light and springy proto house burner first and foremost, with Manyika's vocal sounding as smooth as silk in the middle of the mix. "Hapana" is equally rich in musicality and personality, albeit on a more simmering, meditative tip. On the B side, "Kubatana" gets reworked by Rudy Midnight Machine and Paradise, who turn in distinct versions without losing the overall 80s aesthetic that powers the release.

Mangwana (Paradise 89 dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Faze Action return with a brand new 12", teaming up with Zimbabwean born Zeke Manyika to create "Mangwana". Sung in Zeke's native Shona, and taking influences from Mory Kante, South African Kwaito to early house, Faze Action manage to create a record that harks back yet still has a modern and contemporary feel and is set to be the soundtrack to countless festivals and outdoor parties this summer.

The title track is followed by the stunning "Chiiko", featuring Zeke's vocals enriched by Rob's 'cello's with African rhythms floating you away to another tropical world. A Vision of Panorama turns up the dial with a stunning mix on the flip side. A new bass line adds to some quality keyboard work. Finally the brothers deliver are more stripped out dub "Paradise '89 Mix" tailored for the peak time.

Review: International Feel kicks off what is presumably a new series given its title, Mediterranean Dreams - Part 1. For it, they turn to Perugia synth obsessive, underground mainstay and fine producer Feel Fly for four tracks of breezy and sunny disco-house chuggers. 'Onironauta' brings retro Italo chords and nice chunky drums, 'Grace In Space' is a leggy cosmic wonder with far-sighted chords and muted acid magic, then 'Mediterranean Dreams' is pure 80s dream house bliss. 'Becalmed' is the most rough edged and analogue house jack track of the lot.

Cycli Infini (Continued) (17:11)
Review: Eelco Topper's latest release as FELBM is a conceptual affair, with the Dutch producer delivering a 38-minute piece (here split into two parts for vinyl, each of which finishes with a locked groove to give the impression of the track creating an infinite musical loop) that mixes and matches tape loops, cyclical samples, repeating melodic motifs and pastoral-sounding snatches of flute, bansuri, bass trumpet, saxophone and pedal steel. While the concept, inspired by the artist's thoughts about 'the cyclical nature of the world around him" is important, of more significance is the utter brilliance of the piece itself - a genuinely gorgeous, warming, atmospheric and ambient-leaning concoction tailor-made for imagined afternoons in the countryside and woodland walks at dawn.

Review: Montreal's Bernardino Femminielli is one of those artists who seems to slip between easy categorisation, sometimes offering up deep cover grooves for the diggers, or elsewhere indulging in an arch synth pop, minimal wave and other such delights. He's gone as big as it gets on this release for Before I Die, covering the monumental 'Sign Of The Times' by Prince and giving it his own twist with some seriously breathy French vocals. On the flip, Antinote founder IUEKE offers up a subtle remix which takes a light touch and focuses on decorative sonics around the edges of the groove, while Talking Drums take a dubbier approach for their own twist on 'O Signe Des Temps'.

Review: Anyone who's ever run a record label will happily tell you how it's rare to find musical gold amongst the many demos speculatively submitted by up-and-coming producers. Imagine Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy's surprise, then, when he received these superb cuts from previously unheralded German musician Ferdi Schuster. Naturally, he snapped them up straight away. A-side "Little River", in particular, is spectacularly good. Based around the sound of a babbling brook, sun-kissed acoustic guitar licks, vintage synthesizer solos and a languid, samba-inspired groove, it's a grade-A chunk of Balearic brilliance. While B-side "Befreit" doesn't quite reach these dizzying heights, it's still a wonderful trip into sunrise-friendly downtempo territory. As debut singles go, it's little less than stunning.

Review: In cahoots with legendary Japanese record store Jet Set, Freestyle Records has decided to offer-up a 45 featuring two tidy cuts from Lance Ferguson's Rare Groove Spectrum 2 album, a second set of inspired cover versions from the multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and producer. On side A the Melbourne-based musician gives his take on Azymuth classic 'Veo Sobre O Horizonte', re-imaging it as a starry, vintage synth-laden shuffle through sun-baked South American jazz-funk complete with woozy horns, Herbie Hancock keyes and eyes-closed female vocalizations. On the reverse Ferguson turns his hand to Carly Simon's 'Why', adding gorgeous horn solos and sunset-ready flourishes to a faithful re-recording of the reggae-influenced number's familiar groove.

Review: Given his prior output for Leng, Internasjonal, Redux, Under the Shade, Nang, and Bearfunk, Fernando Pulichino is a near perfect fit for Mark Barrott's International Feel label. The Argentinean musician and producer is on truly effervescent form with the tree tracks here, laying down a gripping bassline for opener "Infinite Ways" that would make Sir Weatherall a shade of green with envy. That loose, dubby cut is made all the more distinctive by the vocals from Dom Wrong that hang over Fernando's production, whilst "The Reason" featuring Lara Smiles will appeal to the more laid back selectors. Sandwiched inbetween is instrumental disco cut "Road Music" which may just be our favourite Fernando track in some time.

Review: Former Silver City man Fernando Pulichino seems to be mellowing with age. Having previously explored punk-funk, nu-disco and deep house on his solo releases, he's now switched his focus to dub-influenced, slo-mo Balearic synth-rock. Many of the old trademarks are still present - think rubbery live bass, fluorescent, vintage-sounding synths and unfussy beats - but are here joined by fuzzy guitar solos and an evocative vocal from guest star Fiorucci. It's a potent blend, reminiscent of early '80s cosmic rock with a little more nu-disco nous. The original vocal version is joined by a delicious Extended Dub, which impressively stretches out the infectious, head-nodding groove.

Review: After a standout debut on the label in 2020, Andrea Ferrari returns to Rollover Milano with a new EP charged with Balearic mystique and a truckload of silken synth wares. 'Deep Blue, Green Eyes' is a boxy beatdown in the rhythm section, but the cooing pads, FM chimes and bubbling FX create a delectable dreamscape to drift off into. By way of comparison, 'Subacqueo' jacks up the pressure with a trance-leaning cut splashed with some particularly wigged-out acid lines. Bell Towers takes up the mood of the track and injects a little uptempo joy on a typically sweet remix draped in blissed out melodics, and then the record gets rounded off with some deeper peak time immersion on the seriously immersive piano house stylings of 'Morning Routine'.

Review: Unstoppable Munich label Ilian Tape has another entry in its fine ITX Series here and this one is called 'Biospore Farmers' from Fields of Mist, describing it as "Sunrise Beams Through Orbital Mist." In less abstract terms, it is a gorgeously hazy and lo-fi electro-exploration. The first two cuts are slow, doleful and reflective with grainy pads and deep space ambiance swirling around nice rough-edged broken beats. The B-side picks up the pace with the brilliantly kinetic bounce of 'Astral Projection Spores' and then the skittish and celestial trip that is 'Orbital Mist'. A high-class EP once again.

The Light Of Jesus (8:44)
Room '96 (recorded live at Room Nightclub, Hull) (8:32)
Review: The legendary deep house duo Fila Brazilia return with another retrospective four-track, following last year's Mermaids' reissue. Steel Tiger Records founder Steve Cobby and lecturer David McSherry ha da whirlwind romance with the house scene, one they reignited in 2020 after a 16-year separation. 'Subtle Body' serves as an incredible reintroduction to the dynamic duos sound, tripped-out dubby beats and raw house sessions, with the title track's layered chimes, looped delay feedback and floaty chords blasting right out of the gate. What follows is an unreleased instrumental version of 'Nightfall' from the 2002 album 'Jump Leads', an industrial ambient drifter.

On Side B, the tempo and temperature rises, and we're treated to 'The Light Of Jesus', from the debut LP 'Old Codes: New Chaos'. A bumping house groove, smooth organ and sweet bass combine for an unforgettable track that has stood the test of time fiercely. The EP rounds out with 'Room '96', a live house jam from Hull's Room nightclub - a time capsule to better days. The songs here on Subtle Body might be a window into a time long past, but they remain in the present: and as long as bodies seek pleasure, and dancers want to keep going til sunrise, Fila Brazillia will endure, and soundtrack those moments for us all to get lost in.

Natacha Fink - "Pirarublue" (3:48)
Nimalan Yoganathan - "Unseen Songlines" (4:26)
Review: Natacha Fink's 'Pirarublue' delivers a sexy lounge vibe with hints of jazz rock, characterised by its catchy rhythms and melodies, while on the flip Nimalan Yoganathan presents 'Unseen Songlines,' an ambient piece rich in field recording atmosphere and experimental textures. With its unique sounding hord structures and ample use of echo, this track transports listeners on an introspective journey through soundscapes. Overall, the EP showcases the label's commitment to showcasing eclectic and boundary-pushing music from emerging artists.

When Doves Cry
Review: With previous cuts on the likes of Supernature, House Of Disco and NastyFunk, Norwegian producer builds on his countrymen's cosmic disco roots with a more robust house sound. While still littered with Nordic sombreness and deep textures, there's a much more direct nature to his grooves. As proved on this two-tracker. "Baby" tips a nod at both prog and disco as it weeps softly with strung out synth tones and weaves of counter melodies between the bass and top-line. "When Doves Cry" takes the Prince classic and brings it into the modern age by way of surging synth-bass, looped vocal creativity and enveloping pads. Dynamically built, it positively guarantees warm reactions on every occasion.
