Review: Detroit Stories is, first and foremost, the name of a recent social experiment in Motor City, USA. Largely broadcast on social media like Instagram, it consists of interviews with OG residents and immigrants from way back - the ones who've lived through the city's many ups and downs - we hear got stories of good times, hard work, and opportunities, but also struggles, violence, and social upheavals, all of which helped shaped Detroit's rise and slow fall. Secondly but not least, 'Detroit Stories' is also the name of Daughters And Sons' (Luca Fronza's) latest EP, which plunges the sampleable depths of these interviews to effuse a deep and inexorable sense of the city's cultural significance, not only as the heartland of Fordism (the dominant ideology in whose shadow even humble music reviewers like ourselves live), but also the place, where, without coincidence, techno originated. Coming with a remix by Prins Thomas, star track 'Gipsy' is especially well-suited to the city's obverse mood, combining the glitz of industrial opportunism, a Detroit-endemic Christian religiosity, and a nomadic core theme, all via ploddingly militant beats and a twinging lead synth whistle.

Review: Digital Imagination first dropped their The Essence of Thought back in the nineties and now the cult favourite gets a nice reissue in time for summer when it will be perfect post-rave comedown tackle. It is a sci-fi inspired mixture of house, transcend trip hop of the era with lots of analogue action and dusty drum breaks, smart little samples that add a cinematic edge and some lovely basslines. It was produced by a young Ted Heinz and originally release by Concept Records. OGs are hard to come by so don't sleep on the one which has been restored from the original DAT tape.

Review: DJ F16 Falcon's music has always been tricky to pigeonhole, with the fast-rising French producer frequently fusing dub-wise rhythms and off-kilter beats with unusual samples, Tolouse Low Tracks style experimental electronics and melodic elements that doff a cap to tropical, new age and world music. Ici Commence La Nuit, his latest excursion, treads a similar sonic path, delivering unusual but wonderfully inventive and entertaining excursions. The most accessible and warming of the lot is colourful, melodious and bass-heavy opener 'Ici Commence La Nuit', though the sludgy, modular-rich pulse of 'Trip a La Mode de Quand' and thoroughly odd 'Clope Sucree' are equally as potent.

Review: DJ Fede has our minds turning to warmer climates, longer days and sun-kissed parties not only with the artwork but also the sounds of his new 12" on Balearia. 'Santa Eularia Des Riu' is the one original single and is a delightfully deep, dreamy sound with muted sax lines up top, chords that ripple and melt away and organic percussion that brings that 70s hint of Ibiza hedonism. A Midnight dub mix ups the pace only slightly, then the Jovonn Forest remix brings a subtle deep house dynamism to proceedings before the Atmospheric Sunset version cuts utterly loose and lays back gazing up at the flame-red sky.

They offer up three different versions of 'Para Siempre' that are all suited to sunset sessions on the beach. The tune features Florencia and first comes as an Italo Balearic vocal mix which is doused in lush synths and has steady bass rumbles below the rich chords. The Elements Of Trance mix is perfect for when things head indoors to the club with its weighty low-end thud then the most trippy and loved-up version comes at the end.

Review: While hardly a "Holy Grail"all bar a few people didn't know it existed until recently, D.J Never Sleep's sole single, the private press gem 'Teorema', can certainly be described as "buried treasure". It was reportedly the work of some experienced Italian producers, though its' sound is all Spanish guitar solos, early house-meets-Latin freestyle beats, joyous Piano riffs and evocative female vocals, it is pure formative Balearic house. This Thank You reissue not only showcases the original EP's two leading mixes (track two here, the more chugging and synth bass-sporting rework, is the pick), but also a never-released, effects-laden 'Never Sleepy Beats' drum took, plus versions in Spanish (B1) and French (B2).

Review: Since first joining forces in 2007, frequent collaborators DJ Pippi and Willie Graff have established themselves amongst the higher echelons of the Balearic fraternity, primarily by delivering records that offer a soft-focus blend of disco, deep house and downtempo grooves. Their latest single - a cover of Ewan McColl's loved-up 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', a song famously turned into a 1980s Balearic classic by Joanna Law - offers a particularly sumptuous variation on their sonic blueprint, with their original mix (B1) combining luscious orchestration, Spanish guitar solos, shuffling samba drums and a stirring lead vocal from Clarita de Quiroz. Phil Mison's Cantoma Dub provides a slightly tougher but no less Balearic variation, while Roberto Lodola's vocal and instrumental mixes give the track a warming and jazzy deep house feel.

Review: On his Pont Neuf label debut, DJ Psychiatre - a rising star of the French electronic underground who recently released a fine EP on Shall Not Fade - invites us to Enter The Chillzone. The title offers more than a hint of what's inside, as while there are plenty of club-ready moments, the whole thing is heady, loved-up, laidback, atmospheric and melody-rich. For proof, check the lilting lead lines, simmering chords, bubbly acid motifs and shuffling house beats of 'Simple as Fast', the Global Communication-influenced wonder of 'Don't F**k With My Groove' and the string-laden, sunrise-ready warmth of 'Rhythm Is Key'. Elsewhere, 'A Little Treat' is a jazzy trip-hop number smothered in tactile deep house synths, and 'Deep Water' is a luscious downtempo cut of the sort you might have heard in the late 1990s.

Review: B2 Recordings hits release number 13 with DJ Rocca and Lex combing on a trio of fresh house cuts that blend elements of disco, Latin and soul. Up first is the glorious 'Solid Street' which has loose and percussive disco-house grooves overlaid with big synth energy and steamy vocals. 'Solar System' is slower and deeper, with a more rugged bassline and low slung sense of funk that never lets up. Review: Two years on from his last outing under the DJ Snils alias, Oleg Buyanov AKA Ol buddies up with pal Every Korner (real name Roman Erikona) to help launch the Save the Books label. The Moscow-based pair apparently recorded the four tracks at various points over the last few years. There's an undeniably Balearic feel to proceedings throughout, from the dreamy pads, twittering loon bird samples and new age ambient melodies of 'Intro', to the jazz-flecked Italian dream house drowsiness of luscious and life-affirming closing cut 'Sector 100'. Review: Few artists can genuinely to have carved their own niche within electronic music, but with the Don't DJ project, Florian Meyer has done just that. Describing his sound is notoriously difficult, but in essence it offers up a kind of twisted, ritualistic, leftfield take on tribal-influenced sounds that employs unusual, often highly complex rhythms. His latest single, which acts as a taster for his forthcoming album on Berceuse Heroique, offers a neat summary. 'Lemon Garlic' is a superb, near 15-minute workout in which looped, marimba style melodic loops, mutilated flute samples, breezy lead lines and tropical noises rise above an impossible-to-describe percussive rhythm. Wah Wah Wino crewmember Morgan Buckley provides the flipside remix, adding live bass and exotic instrumentation to a re-tooled, four-to-the-floor take on Meyer's polyrhythmic groove.

Review: In Waves continue their deep-sea abyssal theme with Draso's latest EP 'The Moment Is Forever', which captures the perceived timelessness of life's most euphoric moments. Harmony and wholesomeness over discordancy is paramount to this music's vision. 'Hygge', the not-completely-translatable Dutch word meaning something adjacent to "homely warmth", opens the EP in shuffly, twinkly, wondrous tech house form. Review: Multi-Culti regular Dreems (AKA Aussie producer Angus Gruzman) makes music that's deeply psychedelic, but often extremely difficult to neatly pigeonhole. He's at it again on this first outing for Pinchy & Friends, which combines a trio of original cuts with a similar number of total reconstructions from dub hero Scientist. You'll find the former on the A, with analogue-rich synth-wave throbber 'Watchamacallit Machine' being joined by the minimalistic, bass-heavy brilliance of 'String Gadget' and the tactile psychedelic electronic funk of 'Here Comes The New Prophet'. Scientist's dubs are naturally excellent, with the much-loved mix-master re-imagining Gruzman's tracks as deep, spaced-out electronic dub tracks. They're all great, with his dub of 'Here Comes The New Prophet' being the most dancefloor-ready of the lot.

Review: Italy's foremost investigator of 60s and 70s library music and jazz fusion sounds can do no wrong if you ask us. Everything they put out is sumptuous whether it's an old reissue or a new outing. Here we have the pair of bassist Federico Amorosi and keys, synth and programming wizard Valerio Lombardozzi cooking up some brilliant blends of cosmic funk and Italo disco, all with fresh flavours from soundtracks and synthporn from days gone. The A-side is an instrumental with a lush mid-tempo groove and the flip has a more infectious dance sound.

Review: If you've ever wondered how much Balearic you can get on one 12" then this one might answer the question. Arriving on Cala Tarida Musica, it finds Residentes Balearicos pair up with bonafide Ibizan legend DJ Alfredo for a sizzling summer anthem. 'Sundown' is pure Ibiza house bliss with wavy grooves and majestic jazzy keys that bring the joyful good times. Balearic boss man Chris Coco then steps up with his wavy and elegant Sueno Mediterraneo remix as well as a To The Bone dub that is even deeper and more smooth and last of all is a SIRS mix with a more raw edge and urban atmosphere.

Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. This one has romantic sax notes and gentle grooves with jazzy keys finishing it in style.

Review: Miss Nixon and Jacqueline Fuijkschot originally got together for some jam sessions in a sweaty attic circa 2015, and wound up with a track called 'Run' which ended up on a 7" for Das Ding's Tear Apart Tapes. Since then, Hivern Discs have picked up on the track and brought it out of limited-run obscurity to give it a full 12" pressing with some expertly selected cover versions. The original is a threadbare slice of melancholic minimal wave, but Cucina Povera thickens the sound into a brooding slice of ethereal dream pop. Celine Gillain's version is poised and raw, in keeping with her own excellent Mind Is Mud LP. Dania completes the picture with a straining, yearning ambient abstraction of the original.

Review: We're not quite sure about the story behind this EP - Bathurst have not made clear whether it's the first in a series, or whether there's a theme - but the music on show is well-worth checking. Zoe Leonard dons the Simmerdown guise on excellent opener 'Legitimacy', a slowly unfurling affair that craftily combines sun-kissed ambient electronics with cut-up, club-ready beats, gargantuan bass and 140 style vocal cut-ups. David Hanke delivers two contrasting cuts: the shuffling, bass-heavy, spacey-but-sleazy excellence of 'Deep Shit Part 3' as Black Soyls, and the cheerier and bouncier 'Mirrorsides' under his given name. Our favourite though is ITO's 'Citylights', a jazzy, slipped instrumental number full of beautiful piano flourishes and languid bass.

Review: In April 2023, Swiss label Subject To Restrictions Discs offered up a fine debut EP from Zurich electronic wave duo Dadalus & Bikarus. This follow-up EP presents the same tracks in freshly remixed form, with a variety of underground heroes and rising stars providing the revisions. Saeko Killy kicks things off with a minimalistic, subtly funky new wave rework of 'Voran', before Cage & Aviary man Jamie Paton drops versions of two tracks: a moody, slap bass-sporting dark-wave re-wire of 'Youri Gagarine', and a chugging, A Love From Out of Space style tweak of 'Gone'. Over on side B, Andrei Rusu re-imagines 'Tous Les Mesonges' as a dense, discordant slab of rolling acid-electro, while Anastasia Zems turns 'Voran' into a brain-melting acid jacker.

Infusing influences from Africa, Asia, and Latin America with European techno and house, Dominik's signature sound shines through. Review: DDWY appeared on Public Possession label earlier in the year when they put out their Chill Pill compilation and their contribution was the perfectly balearic dance gem 'Orchard'. Now the pair is back with a limited edition album, Sprig Songs. It lays out their distinctive take on dance music which is dubbed out and trippy, often slow paced, doused in proggy melodies and all flavoured with unique Nangis chants. Review: Although her roots lie in jazz, Melanie De Biasio has not made jazz - or at least purist jazz - for many years. Il Viaggio, a vast double album that marks her first studio set for nearly six years, continues this trend, blending field recordings, sound collage, choral music, ambient, the neo-classical darkness of Dead Can Dance, piano works reminiscent of Harold Budd's more contemplative works, and occasional nods towards trip-hop - all arranged as a kind of sonic journey to (and through) Italy by train as a way of rediscovering her distant Italian roots. With plenty of long, immersive tracks and bags of atmosphere, Il Viaggio is a hugely atmospheric and immersive affair that more than delivers on its conceptual premise.

Review: German-Brazilian artist Gloria de Olivera and David Lynch associate Dean Hugely come together for an album that cerebrates the joy and escapism of dream pop. It is an album on Sacred Bones awash with eerie synth strings that are offset by De Olivera's German vocals. Drums echo the sounds of the early Cocteau Twins and the shimmering synths take you higher. It is a low key work with plenty of lo-fi aesthetics but one that makes a grand emotional impact. 'Hanging Gardens' is a real favourite with its moody backdrop of wooly synths.

Review: It could have all been so different when Death In Vegas first formed. Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier spawned the project in 1994 and got signed under the name Dead Elvis, but legal wrangling got in the way and they used the name for their debut album instead. Now Music On Vinyl have repressed the 1997 classic so we can revel in the grizzled take on big beat and trip hop the pair cooked up. It's very much of its time, but there's a snarl to the production which sets Death In Vegas apart from their peers at the time, opting for the dive bar ambience over the festival main stage you'd hear when playing The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. For that reason Dead Elvis has aged very well indeed.

Review: Sky Girl is the work of two noted (but arguably under-appreciated) crate diggers, DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery, and gathers together a veritable treasure trove of obscure material loosely connected by (in the label's own words) "the same longing sentiment". Its' fifteen tracks touch on a variety of hazy, down-tempo styles, and were recorded at various points between 1961 and '91. There's much to admire throughout, from the folksy psychedelic pop of The Rising Storm's "Frozen Laughter", and spoken word eccentricity of Scott Seskind's "I Remember", to the dreamy, eyes-closed ambience of Nini Raviolette & Hugo Weris' "Slow" and string-laden samba-folk of Nora Guthrie's "Home Before Dark".

It takes the form of an album by France's Deep Nalstrom who has established himself in Bristol with his tripped out and ethereal soundscapes. More of that downtempo magic defines this long player across seven tracks of otherworldly music. It's laden with percussion, steel drums, shimmering melodies and celestial energy that permeates the soul. It makes for one of the most brilliantly atmospheric and cinematic albums of ambient we've heard in a while.

Review: This latest edition to the Neroli catalogue sees the arrival of a new album project from long time hero, Kirk Degiorgio. Imbued with folkloric sensibilities, Robe Of Dreams is an example of the sheer transportative abilities of electronic jazz fusion, melding sounds that are almost rooted but not quite of this world. The first track, 'The Ancient City', follows a cresting wave of shimmering synths - a portal into Degiorgio's hypnagogic soundworld. 'I Saw Pharaoh Levitate' features a melody that dances, skipping with the lightest touch across a field of glittering cymbal percussion. 'Sinai' explores the roughened textures of warped electric guitar riffs, woven to create atmospheres of marbled spaciousness and density. 'Robe Of Dreams', however, is the title track for a reason - expanding and contracting piano melodies melt effortlessly into dreamy electronic atmospheres, rising and falling and veering into moments of unsettling minor keys with extraordinary precision. A masterful and spiritual project from the extraordinary musician.

Review: Emotional Rescue go hunting in the reeds for forgotten projects, and come up trumps once again. Delay Tactics formed at the beginning of the 80s as a tape looping project from Carl Weingarten and Reed Nesbit before expanding their palette with Walter Whitney's synth vamping. They didn't last past their second album, 1984's Any Questions?, but now the finest of the band's catalogue has been documented here. The sound is prime inquisitive 80s, teetering between the traditional band dynamic and the experimental pastures of technology-powered music. At times infectiously playful ('Oyster') and at others compellingly beautiful ('Kites'), Delay Tactics are exactly the kind of band that deserve another moment in the sunshine.

Review: A warm welcome back to Norwegian duo Dibidim, whose 2005 debut album - recorded during their time living in Liverpool - was finally reissued by Oslo's Snorkel records in 2019. The rave reviews that previously impossible-to-find classic garnered inspired the pair to head into the studio and record a belated sequel. Superheaven is heady, sun-splashed and pleasingly horizontal in tone, mixing live instrumentation - piano, horns and so on - with eccentric electronic sounds, warming synths, and nods to ambient, 90s downtempo, electronica and the kind of opioid soundscapes that defy easy categorisation. It's brilliantly blazed, endlessly entertaining and pleasingly slow-motion. In other words, it's a terrific return.

Review: Swedish band Dina Ogon have become one of the most celebrated groups in their scene. After their well received ;east album 'Oas' they now return with 'Orion', which includes the already well received lead single 'Glitter.' That tune is, say the band, "a journey upwards, forwards and inwards." That message somewhat gets against their previous vibe with has been described as backward-looking and Nordic-nostalgic. There is still plenty rich dreaminess to their work here with soaring Balearic-pop delights such as 'Jag Vill Ha Allt', glistening cosmic ditties like 'Det Lacker' and the late night soul of 'Mellan De Sju Fjallen' all swelling your heart.

Review: DJ Balduin is back with a new long player some five years after his last. This one comes on Kann Records and is another tasteful trip into the depths of electronic music with trip hop, breakbeat, ambient, tech house and techno all colouring the grooves. Importantly it is steeped in emotion with each of the well crafted sounds hitting a perfect sweet spot. Core to this is the artist's ability to craft perfect loops that can roll for days and never grate. "He doesn't like to think in categories," says the press text. "By reinterpreting genre-specific elements, discovering unheard soundscapes and with a good portion of nostalgia, he sculpts little stories that vibe on dance floors and in living rooms alike."
