1983 (Ron Basejam Remix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: IIB 054. Rel: 11 Nov 19
  1. 1983 (7:37)
  2. 1983 (Ron Basejam remix) (7:39)
Review: Often found cruising around on Music For Dreams, Bonnie & Klein sidle up to Is It Balearic? with the appropriately smooth sounds of 1983. Taking the concept of island boogie to a blissed-out, peak ideal, "1983" answers the record label question with a resounding 'yes' - this is as Balearic as it gets. Shaking up the sundown sweetness of the original, Ron Basejam is on hand deliver a remix that should get plenty of dancefloors working hard. It's still steeped in vintage sounds, but Basejam's version piles on the funk and rides a fierce disco beat to ensure the record lands in legions of record bags, as it quite rightly should.

  2. 200 (Khidja remix)
  3. 200 (Asphodells remix)
  4. 200 (Asphodells dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Especial is delighted to welcome Baris to the roster. Known for his edit series of obscure Turkish Psychedelic, Rock and Disco, here he takes the producer's chair to present "200". Working with musicians and singers to create a completely original production. The song's message for equality (of the sexes) highlights the bigotry and backward political and religious boundaries his country faces and acts as a siren to the current troubles. Handed to Emotional Recordings over 5 years ago but with no label to release it at that time, now we are delighted to be able to release 200's message. The original is backed with remixed from new production duo Khidja, as well as East London's finest, The Asphodells. Teaming up with guitarist Balabas, Romania's Khidja turn in a deep and introspective interpretation mixing their own heavy eastern influences, while the B-side sees Weatherall and Fairplay don their Asphodells mantle for two renditions that firmly lay it before the ALFOS alter. With artwork (by Jamie Paton) highlighting the struggle for fairness and freedom in his homeland, we hope the release can be seen as a support for their tribulations and highlight the talent that lays East.

Review: Italian sound sculpter Spygeist maintains momentum with a bounty of touching compositions: "New Forms Of Beauty". The space and dynamics immerse you from the very first chime of "Hanged". Further into the fog we plough to discover the cinematic, slo-mo jazz of "Demoniac", the nostalgic piano whimsy of "Confidential Love", the yearning one note synth strikes of "Malinchonica", the more sprightly, springy classic electro beats and Amazonian atmospheres of "Light Pipe" and plenty more. Coming on strong like an album rather than a seven-track EP, this in itself is a form of beauty.

  1. Ursa Minor (6:12)
  2. Exotic Matter (3:16)
  3. Exquisite Corpse (Zero Gravity mix) (5:38)
  4. Running To Paradise (6:03)
Review: From Robsoul and Tsuba to Is It Balearic? and Futureboogie, Craig Bratley can be many things depending on who's releasing his music. He launches the Automatism label in a flurry of cosmic disco finery with "Ursa Minor", a synth-rich escapade that could make Cerrone feel a little giddy on its course to the stars. "Exotic Matter" slows things right down and ramps up the rock drums to create a noirish soundtrack vibe. "Exquisite Corpse (Zero Gravity Mix)" changes tact once more with some plaintive piano tinkering over subtle arpeggios, and "Running To Paradise" slides down into a smooth Balearic groove that rounds out this wonderfully diverse EP.

Review: The new soft-spoken, hard-rocking group from Baltimore debuted their full length live show at the Wolf + Lamb Marcy Hotel this March. Following in the footsteps of greats like Nicolas Jaar and PillowTalk, they were the first invited guest in over 2 years to perform at the legendary Brooklyn proving grounds. Life on Planets is a duo that met in the studio lofts of their east coast hometown, whereby a collaboration fusing indie artrock and electronic music began to take shape. It was a pairing of two dramatically different personas, merging as one for a serendipitous, romantic sound that's now been signed to the Double Standard label. Life on Planets has also released music through Better on Foot, where the debut single 'Apollo' made waves in early 2014. The touring act features live vocals and guitar, backed by a dj/producer, dawning a long-awaited return to authentic songwriting in dance music.

Review: Palms and Charms' latest dose of "music for sunsets and dancing" comes from Miskotom, a Lithuanian husband-and-wife duo best known for their delicious deep house and dreamy downtempo EPs on Pleasure Unit and Dream Time. We're particularly enjoying languid but floor-friendly opener "Huacachina", where a lilting lone horn and drowsy chords rise above a cowbell-sporting beat and jazzy bass guitar, but the Nu Guinea style deep and dreamy jazz-funk goodness of "Berenice's Hair" is not fair behind. Further Balearic movements are provided on the flip, where the dreamy and drifting warmth of "Nazska" is followed be the gently bubbly beats, stretched-out chords, Simple Minds guitars and starry synths of "Aegean Cruise 1955".

Afterlife (7")
Cat: RSDSE 03. Rel: 17 Apr 19
  1. Pontchartrain - "Afterlife" (4:39)
  2. Blair French - "Pool" (6:00)
Review: It was Memorial Day Weekend 2016, and the sun shined bright over the Detroit River. Pontchartrain stepped up to the decks at the Red Bull stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival donning his infamous "Detroit vs. Itself" t-shirt. His first song through the Rane rotary mixer was a dubplate made specifically for his set: "Afterlife". It's a brilliantly executed balearic daytime disco rework that warrants the praise of summer anthem that it's earning. On the flip is "Pool", an equally sunny slomo beatdown rework from Blair French. It's a delightful blend of cerebral and soulful, and is finally getting a release after being originally championed by Peter Croce on his Le Mellotron Paris set back in early 2018.

Review: 'Around the Bend' is soft rock for hard times brought to you by Universal Cave. Bongos high in the mix, a breezy beginning builds towards guitar glistening over a mega kind groove. A tune fit for hang gliders, rock climbers, and summer Sundays. Sunsets and sailboats. Slow grooves for mellow moods. Side B's 'Riding' is flipside meets ripside, no nonsense shredding over a driving drum beat. Long haired beardo disco rock that never quits.

Review: Is It Balearic?'s Uber sublabel has been on cracking form since it started up in 2014, and now the more electronically-minded outpost turns to Russia and the lesser known artist Serene. The name is appropriate, as this hitherto unfamiliar producer turns out some wonderfully delicate compositions that are heavy on synths and light on rhythms. While it may be proudly electronic music, there is a very human warmth at the heart of At The Zenith, with reams of expressive key playing loosening up the mechanical pulse of the music to create a lovely pastoral listening experience in line with the other releases on Uber.

Review: BAH040 is the first time out for Caissard DJ, not that you'd know on the basis of this plush, accomplished romp through 80s island boogie that chimes perfectly with the Bahnsteig 23 vibe. "Bright Dance" is a noirish smorgasbord of crystalline melodies and good, honest synth-pop thrust, while "Market Anthem" switches things up with a new wave twist. "La x5" is a wonderful curio, all stuttering, borderline baroque tones and Eastern string histrionics. The "Melange Dub" of "Arrakis" is a wild soul trying to be tamed by the machines, and then "Demo-cracy" dips into an almost minimal wave pulse before "The God Emperor" finishes the eclectic ride with ethnic chimes and percussion filtered through a grainy medium.

  6. BouncerC-nt With A Shit Tash (6:32)
Review: Surely the freakiest house party in town, Bahnsteig 23 is the gift that keeps on giving. The relentless release schedule keeps up right here with this unmissable missive from Cherrystones, a learned selector and all round sonic oracle who regularly rubs shoulders with Andy Votel and that ilk of muso's muso. As you'd expect there's a rich spread of vibes on offer here, from the Afro-disco rub down "Simba Dub" to the Eastern psych lilt of "Belly King". "ExOhSkeletons" brings out some gutter punk styles and loops them into a strangely hypnotic form, and "Topical Meat Wave" imparts some pan-seared drama onto a French disco-funk. "KonGkinG" is a shouty new wave funker, and then the record wobbles out on a suitably deep B3 cut for the weirdos, all Oizo-esque synth blurts and sloppy live drum grooves.

  4. Tuesday Club (Mushrooms Project Acid Line mix) (6:10)
Review: Craig Christon and Bonar Bradberry team up as Before Christ for this essential slice of brooding party fuel, leading in with the trippy, otherworldly tones of "Barry's K." From the grinding pulse of the analogue bassline to the mystical keys, it's the consummate astral traveler for DJs exploring the outer realms of the dancefloor. Mushroom Project gently rub more spaced out elements into the original, injecting a little light and letting the hits linger for longer in the ample space of their killer version. "Tuesday Club" finds Before Christ turning to a more sharp-edged rhythmic palette without losing the hypnotic qualities of their sound, before Mushroom Project return to lay down a rubbery 303 bassline that fits right in amongst the raw drum hits and dense FX processing.

Review: House Music With Love turn once again to Swedish duo Swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of Balearic goodness. Original track "Be There" is certainly laced with an air of Scandinavian cool, not least thanks to Erika Rosen's dreamy vocals, but there's a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. Halllo Halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. Ghost Immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

Cat: VV 017. Rel: 16 Mar 15
  1. Becoming Nice
  2. Janice Will Deal With It
  3. Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes
Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

Review: Hell Yeah Recordings has gathered together an all-star cast to remix Underground System's "Bella Ciao", a punchy, horn-heavy dub disco cut based on a popular Italian chant. The A-side boasts a collaborative rework from Leo Mas, Fabrice Laguna and Gigi Masin, which brilliantly slows down the original to a stoned crawl, with the latter's impeccable synths and piano solos creating an undeniably horizontal, sun-kissed mood. The flipside "On Air Mix" by Mas and Laguna is, if anything, even better, stripping the original back to little more than a heavy dub bassline, delay-laden trumpet solos and sparse percussion hits.

  4. So Deep (instrumental mix) (4:53)
Review: In some circles, Arvo's 1984 album Luna is considered something of a lost synth-pop classic. It was unarguably the high point of Arvo's career, with the album's two most lauded tracks - "Bikini" and "So Deep" - remaining popular with dusty-fingered Balearic beards. Here those two tracks are given the reissue treatment by New Zealand imprint Strangelove Music. You'll find the breezy, stylish and largely slo-mo original versions on the A-side, with fresh reworks on the flip. First, French producer Shelter does a brilliant job in extending "Bikini", wisely extending the dreamy first section and making more of the Brazilian-influenced synthesizer motifs, before Aussie Italo-disco digger Hysteric delivers a head-nodding instrumental take on "So Deep" that's worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

Cat: FW 004. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Blumareciano

  3. Begum
Review: Mehmet Aslan and Miajica represent some of the finest operators in Basel, and their Fleeting Wax label is on hand to represent what's good in the Swiss scene and beyond. On this latest release they turn to Eva Geist, who has previously been spotted on Macadam Mambo and Elestial Sound with her beautiful mix of synths and vocals, striking a chord between noirish synth pop and heads down club music. "Blumareciano" is a wonderfully seductive, slightly spooky stew of a track which San Proper then injects with his usual freaky energy to make for a more uptempo party version. Then Geist's "Begum" stretches over the B-side in a bubbling blend of delayed voices, tribal percussion and general outernational surrealism.

They're on cracking form for this return to Uber, kicking off with the sultry "Tones Of Ballad", which gets a subtle beefing up from Drifts Projects on the remix. Review: Kiyotaka Fukagawa released his latest album as Calm on Hell Yeah last year, but the label are wisely taking their time in revisiting the material to give it that extra dose of timelessness. On this second round of remixes, Mark Barrott brings a tasteful dose of Eastern mysticism to "Space Is My Place" on his aptly titled "Re-Imagination To The Sacred Heart Center". Turn the record over for My Friend Dario's "Etna Breeze" version of "Shadows & Lights" - an expansive acid laced ambient dream with a touch of 80s new age. This is classy stuff for gentle souls - Balearic heads take note!

It finds British artist Mike Greene aka Fort Romeau link with US bass player and Vampire Weekend member Chris Baio for a widescreen kosmiche exploration: opener "Capra" is a surging seven minute rhythmic odyssey that elevates mind, body and soul followed by "Far Gone", all killer bass guitar riffs and wandering pads. "Super Cannes" closes out with some fantastic live drumming, nailing down a motor kick that races forward beneath nostalgic keys coated in analogue hiss and hum. Future retro never sounded better.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

  2. Change Your Style (Prins Thomas edit) (5:20)
Review: Here comes the second release from Neppa, focusing on lost and overseen recordings. Following up that great inaugural release (a reissue of South African legend Don Laka), the Oslo-based label presents a golden oldie by Dutch pop outfit Renee. Originally released back in 1980 and taken from the album "Reaching For The Sky", they were in their element on "Change Your style" a groovy and lo-slung disco journey featured here with immaculate production held together by Anja Nodelijk's hypnotic voice. It's like it was made for hometown hero Prins Thomas, who delivers his midas touch on his edit on the flipside.

Review: The latest Antinote release marks a slight diversion for the Parisian operation as it welcomes Domenique Dumont to the fold with a six-track EP of charmingly odd vignettes that sound unlike anything else that has come out on the label, while simultaneously fitting right in. Despite the French name, it transpires Domenique Dumont is the work of a man hailing from Latvian capital Riga with Comme ca benefitting from the occasional wonderful vocal turn from an unnamed female singer. With delicate, fluttering melodic lines and gentle Minipops beats run through a dub aesthetic filter and imbued with positivity, it's certainly comforting listening for more clement times. All hail Antinote!

Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.
