  3. 200 (Asphodells remix)
  4. 200 (Asphodells dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Especial is delighted to welcome Baris to the roster. Known for his edit series of obscure Turkish Psychedelic, Rock and Disco, here he takes the producer's chair to present "200". Working with musicians and singers to create a completely original production. The song's message for equality (of the sexes) highlights the bigotry and backward political and religious boundaries his country faces and acts as a siren to the current troubles. Handed to Emotional Recordings over 5 years ago but with no label to release it at that time, now we are delighted to be able to release 200's message. The original is backed with remixed from new production duo Khidja, as well as East London's finest, The Asphodells. Teaming up with guitarist Balabas, Romania's Khidja turn in a deep and introspective interpretation mixing their own heavy eastern influences, while the B-side sees Weatherall and Fairplay don their Asphodells mantle for two renditions that firmly lay it before the ALFOS alter. With artwork (by Jamie Paton) highlighting the struggle for fairness and freedom in his homeland, we hope the release can be seen as a support for their tribulations and highlight the talent that lays East.

  3. Tuesday Club (6:30)
  4. Tuesday Club (Mushrooms Project Acid Line mix) (6:10)
Review: Craig Christon and Bonar Bradberry team up as Before Christ for this essential slice of brooding party fuel, leading in with the trippy, otherworldly tones of "Barry's K." From the grinding pulse of the analogue bassline to the mystical keys, it's the consummate astral traveler for DJs exploring the outer realms of the dancefloor. Mushroom Project gently rub more spaced out elements into the original, injecting a little light and letting the hits linger for longer in the ample space of their killer version. "Tuesday Club" finds Before Christ turning to a more sharp-edged rhythmic palette without losing the hypnotic qualities of their sound, before Mushroom Project return to lay down a rubbery 303 bassline that fits right in amongst the raw drum hits and dense FX processing.

"Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Review: Bonnie & Klein can often be found cruising round labels like Music For Dreams and Leng, imparting tender touches of Balearic finery for those who like to cruise on the slinkiest of 80s flavoured jams. They're on cracking form for this return to Uber, kicking off with the sultry "Tones Of Ballad", which gets a subtle beefing up from Drifts Projects on the remix. "Pretty Lake" is the cut for those who want to achieve pure transcendental bliss by way of canned slap bass and sustained chords, and then "Snowdrifts" finishes the EP off with a thoughtful piece shaped out by sweet piano and stirring strings.

  4. Nexus Vox (Cass version part I & II)
Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

  3. Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes
Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.

This is remixed by the Beat Broker who adds a few sublime uplifting west coast sprinkles. The first track on the B side is a solid disco tinged house beauty with synth stabs subtle acid undertones claps and a great sample. The final track is Beyond the Sun. Review: Is It Balearic? welcome the mellow charms of Chris Coco and Camillo Miranda to lay down an unusual paean to a prehistoric love with the truly breezy drifter "Dinosaur Baby." While the tale might be a quirky one, the music is the real deal, all tumbling percussion locked into a slow, head-nodding groove, and this comes through even stronger on the "12" Dub". On the flip, Rune Lindbaek delivers a remix that fleshes the original out with laconic disco flourihes, and then Luke Solomon's version injects a little housey energy into the make up with his usual flair for off-kilter party fuel.

Review: Two of the UK's finest underground labels join forces and share their talent on this killer 12. From IIB we have Coyote's Sin Distracciounes, an upbeat sunkissed dancefloor meditation featuring the blissed out Flamenco guitar of long time collaborator Saro Tribastone. Futurboogie's Christophe remixes and chops up the guitar and adds some gypsymenesque organ stabs and layers of keys. Futureboogie's Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read drop the funky guitar heavy Restless People. Sublime chugging beats and a beautiful vocal refrain imploring 'Slow It Down' creating a laidback house monster. IIB's Max Essa puts his remix right in the middle of the dancefloor with straight up house vibes and extra percussion.

  4. Slumber (El Diablo's Social Club remix)
Review: After taking us on a drug chug at the start of the year DJ Rocca serves up 2 tracks for the next EDSC Release.

Lets Go Party kicks things off.... stabby chords, Roland percussion, catchy vocal shots, bass-line and massive E'd up breakdowns make this a must have slate for your box.

Th remix comes in the form of an Italo banger from a fave of the El Diablo's cartel - Brioski who goes straight for the heart of the dance floor and rips it right out.

Slumber slows the pace down a bit sounding like something from a late 70's Italian horror movie...pulsating chords & echoey piano reminiscent of Claudio Simonetti & John Carpenter.

El Diablo's Social Club remix stays in the same vein making making sparse use of the eerie piano whilst adding a chuggy bassline, heavy arps and some extra guitars courtesy of Crazy P's Tim Davies.

Review: Surely one of the finest record labels operating out of Russia right now, Udacha welcomes Gamayun back for a second time to admirably dive into the particular spirit that surrounds the label. Somewhere between loose-fit soulful house grooves you might hear on Downbeat and a more mystical, far-out spirit, this mysterious producer is a dab hand at weaving a particularly enchanting spell. The jazzy fluidity of "C-Music" could easily sit alongside some of Vakula's more wayward works, while "Aerial Dance" pirouettes off into an abstract rhythmic space that truly stimulates even as it confuses. Records this fresh-sounding don't roll around every day.

This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

  4. Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.

Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

Review: Is It Balearic...? continues to challenge our perception of what makes the perfect island breeze jam, this time around welcoming emergent producer Kimopots to the table with a track that is just crying out for a choice cocktail in a weathered hammock. "Synthetic" is anything but, riding on a bed of hand-played percussion and capturing an innate warmth in its melodic content that feels utterly natural, even if it has been played on synthesisers. Ilija Rudman steps up with a fat old bassline and some eerie strings and chimes that make his remix a thoroughly worthwhile one, and then Robot 84 makes a more drastic turn towards peppy deep house for an audacious revision that frames the original in a whole new light.

This set of compositions has been described as Balearic downtempo with pastoral departures. Written while on several beaches, it suggests the definition of lackadaisical make out music, emoting euphoric post pillow talk feelings-of-the-raw through minimalist synth phrasing, ambient texturing and isolated beats. Following in the footsteps of greats like Nicolas Jaar and PillowTalk, they were the first invited guest in over 2 years to perform at the legendary Brooklyn proving grounds. Review: Golf Channel and Emotional Response embark on a mission to bring together two generations of Kraut excellence as Dunkelziffer's Dominik Von Senger collaborates with the Montezumas Rache pairing of Jan Schulte and Christian Pannenborg. As you'd expect, the resultant EP is rather fine. They set the tone with "Rheinfaren", where a low-slung, dubbed-out groove is complimenting by twinkling guitars, delay-laden Jew's harp parts, and other sun-kissed elements. "Tangerine (Krauter Mix)" doffs a cap to Tangerine Dream and Dunkelziffer, with tumbling guitars - some effected by a wah-wah pedal - and vintage synths combining to create an effortlessly Balearic mood. Closer "Guten Morgen Bromio" is a fuzzier affair, combining grooves and sounds reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Animals full-length with the out-there attitude of classic krautrock.

"Surdinia" takes over the A side with a bombastic array of peak time devices in its utility belt, from bubbling acid tweaks to gluttonous monosynth leads and a chunky set of drums. First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Sad Beach continues with the layered textures with a little more of a percussive feel. through the Desert Land is shimmering mesmerising journey through the dunes with loose congas soft guitars and a hypnotic Jews Harp. Review: Uber picked up this beautiful mellowed out pop song by Shining Bird for a vinyl release after becoming totally captivated by its warm laid back Balearic feel. Shining Bird hail from Austinmer a coastal town just south of Sydney, Australia. They are a collective of friends who got together over their love of the sea, Australian cinema, Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" Lp and the great Australian poet Henry Lawson. The second track Stitzing/Wipeout is another great alternative pop song in the same vein as Destroyer with the song blending into a 5 min piece of psyched out ambient. On the flip side Coyote remix Distant Dreaming into a horizontal percussion led dubby contemplative trip with pitched down vocals and a throbbing bassline. Uber continuing its crusade of finding and releasing music that captures their Balearic ethos.

As the latest signing to Houndstooth this release sits comfortably next to the gothic tinges of Snow Ghost, with vocalist Oda Egjar Starheim calling to mind Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray fame. There's a canny mixture of noirish pop and expansive electronica, with the duo unafraid to embrace snappy time signature changes and bombastic choruses in amidst the more subtle elements of their sound. With five distinctive songs to announce themselves in addition to a remix from Old Apparatus alumni Asher Levitas, Glass Body is a powerful debut for an act set to tear up festival circuits in the near future.

  4. Rainbow City
  5. Zoned For Fun
Review: Daniel Saxon Judd is plenty prolific as Sorcerer, turning out albums and EPs in abundance on Tirk some ten years ago not to mention more recently landing on Is It Balearic? and Real Balearic, two labels that tell you exactly where his mood is pitched. This five-track EP for Dreamtime keeps the island mindset at the forefront, from the slow and easy "Baked Wave" to the more limber strum-funk of "Drop Shadow". There's some wobbly boogie to enjoy on "Mango Messenger" and MOR grooves of the highest order on "Zoned For Fun" - it's a record swimming in smooth.

  1. Zulu Honda
  2. Afro Vibes
  3. Zulu Honda (A Salinas JC 'Summer Loving' remix)
Review: Is It Balearic bring the heat with a stunning release from Sorcerer. The First track is Zulu Honda. Skipping thick drums and a bouncing bass overlaid with nu med guitars and beautiful synth lines. This track is made for pool parties and lofts. The second track is Afro Vibes a more atmospheric percussive groove. Maribas throbbing bassline and slightly melancholic guitars eventually make way for a subtle acid accent before returning to the groove.. Salins Jockey club remix zulu Honda adding some lovely elements while holding the original feel. Top draw from the dependable IIB crew

  3. Be There (Ghost Immanuel dub) (6:41)
Review: House Music With Love turn once again to Swedish duo Swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of Balearic goodness. Original track "Be There" is certainly laced with an air of Scandinavian cool, not least thanks to Erika Rosen's dreamy vocals, but there's a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. Halllo Halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. Ghost Immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

  1. Lets's Float
  2. Lets's Float (Leo Mas & Fabrice Balearic Deep Militant remix)
Review: Shining Bird frontman Dane Taylor serves up a beautiful piece of mellow beach pop, drenched in antipodean sunshine. This is made for sipping cold drinks under palm tree shade or swinging hammock dreams. The flip sees Balearic Commander in chief Leo Mas and his ever present colonel Fabrice deliver a truly stunning piece of balearic chug. Deep ambient textures capturing the essence of a smiley sunset. Happy happy. Uber hitting the balearic nail on the head once more.

  2. Doing It (Coyote remix) (6:26)
  3. Doing It (Mushrooms Project remix) (12:06)
Review: New artist Daniel Wainwright brings his psychedelic vibrations to Is It Balearic ...? Doing It is a slow motion sleazy trip into the acid house. Swirling vocals and psyched out guitars melt into chuggy acid beats and effects. Coyote up the tempo a touch and strip back the whole track on their remix. Dubby vocal samples and muted guitar groove along to an acidic finale. The second remix is a real thing of beauty from Mushrooms Project. Keeping the same slow tempo and adding space and texture with mellow guitars and extra sitar. A subtlely developing tribal workout. Groovy man.

Sadness Of Being (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: U 11. Rel: 25 Sep 17
  1. Sadness Of Being
  2. Sadness Of Being (Max Essa remix)
Review: Uber always knows the right kind of moody, heads down Balearic throb to get stone-cold chillers nodding their heads in approval, and so it goes on this latest transmission from Wawawiwas. "Sadness Of Being" is a perfect introduction to this duo, with the dub tropes turned up to full and the bassline grooves as slinky as they come. In between the heavy delay and reverb there's a real sense of stride about this track, which Max Essa capitalises on when dropping the more beat driven remix on the B side. The broad premise of the original remains intact, with just a little more emphasis on the synthy side of things.

  2. I Recommend Starman (Black Deer re-edit)
  3. Time For Thick (Not Waving remix)
  4. The Music You Hear At Sea World & Never Forget (Tropical Hi-Fi remix)
Review: Featuring 4 producers that cross musical spheres is the labels way and again roster members are handed the keys to the treasure while welcoming other, less unknown producers a chance to highlight their aural visions.
Starting with the ubiquitous Secret Circuit, here following up his blissed out releases for the label with a first remix. Respecting Luke's leftfield production, but layering his trademark guitar work with a motorik groove, distant harmonic bells and uplifting keys that bring the friends and producers music in a Balearic tandem.
This is followed with William Burnett's Black Deer alias taking the wonderful, but sadly short I Recommend Starman and coming up with an extended edit that allows this modern krautrock masterpiece to truly shine as it should. Simple yet perfect.
On the flip is Not Waving's Alessio Natalizia with a beautiful take on the loved-up, R&B meets Aphex MDMA rush of Time For Thick. Totally replaying the song himself, it is the light industrial percussion and repeating keys that take the track on a journey to the skies.
Finally then, the EP comes back down to earth and closes with new label member, Australia's mysterious Tropical Hi-Fi. Taking the brooding ambience of The Music Hear At Sea World And Never Forget and turning in a drone meets field-recording masterwork.

Review: Under the A Vision of Panorama alias, Mikhail Khavsko has released some of the most beguiling nu-Balearic music of the past few years. Aquafusion is his long-awaited debut album, and is sure to further enhance his already high reputation. Drawing on sun kissed synthesizer grooves, languid nu-disco and hazy pop for inspiration, the album boasts all manner of ear-pleasing highlights. These include the new age inspired ambient slinkiness of "Open Sequences", the Gigi Masin style bliss of "Seagulls", the mid-'80s synth-pop-goes-dancing bounce of "Barbados", and the baked, horizontal pop of "Duality" (which notably features the drowsy vocals of Krista Michaela).

Review: A long awaited studio album of Saint-Petersburg based live-electronic music trio D-Pulse.
For the past few years D-Pulse has released their music on such established labels as Island, Tirk, Teardrop, Gomma, and Theomatic. Mostly known for their remixes, band decided to bring their debut studio album via their very own imprint - Vernal records.
The band's melancholic sound echoing from the numerous factories and forests of their homecity, Izhevsk, fused with exeptional production established D-Pulse as one of the most vivid and respected live acts on the contemporary Russian indie and electronic music scene.
