The Three Sisters EP

The Three Sisters
Vasbacken
Sultan
Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.

That Is The Question (4:45)
Review: Wrekin Havoc does just that with its second release from the artist of the same name. After a big first EP that really announced the label's arrival in style this one is another tasty disco collection. 'Heavy Breathing' has toting old school chords and Italo drums and 'Work It' bring glossy vocals, crashing hits and a libidinous vocal. Things get slow and seated but just as steamy on the flipside cut 'Dirty Devil' then last of all is the glorious bit of exotic and tropical, boogie tinged disco freshness that is 'That Is The Question.'

Kool Keith (6:42)
Splash Gordon (6:05)
Review: Wrekin Havoc has been in no rush to get to their third EP - this one comes almost 18 months after the debut - but the music is worth the wait. It is another one from the in-house production team of the same name who describe themselves as crate diggers turned re-editors from deepest Wales. Here they set off on a Balearic-minded disco trip with the soul-drenched 'Double Deb' before 'Boon Rocks', boasting an electric boogie feel with its staying analogue lines and stiff drums. 'Kool Keith' is a low-slung and swaggering dub with classic house samples and 'Splash Gordon' shows yet another side with blissed-out electronic soul.

Review: The ninth release from Worst Records finds Jonnah asking, "what makes a being? What tends to be, always, and yet remains never achieved?" across the five adventurous tracks of his limited Mental & Physical EP. It is rhythmically loose, with tough broken beats, dark dubstep and new age infused ambient designs all magian this a glimpse into the future of our world. Tracks Of Love (dub Guitar) (3:55)
Review: Robert "Dubwise" Browne is a skilled musician who can lay down perfect basslines, lovely keyboard overdubs and excite drum programming. H does all that and more on this super laidback and heartfelt dub for the Japanese label Vortex. 'Tracks of Love' is the sound of a lazy afternoon walk in the park with a new love, without a care in the world and hearts in your eyes. The Balearic guitar solo that rings out midway through is utterly soul melting. The guitar dub makes even more of that aspect of the original.

Love Has Found Its Way (guitar instrumental version) (4:38)
Love Has Found Its Way (dub guitar) (4:38)
Review: Earlier in the year, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne followed up his superb, soft-focus reggae-soul cover of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' with 'Love Has Found Its Way', a fine hook-up with vocalist Maya Hatch that effortlessly joined the dots between samba, lovers rock and sultry downtempo soul. On this "45" he delivers two instrumental revisions of the cut, both of which make superb use of the glistening, fluid jazz guitar solos that only made a brief appearance on the original release. The A-side 'Guitar Instrumental Version' sounds like a future Balearic classic, with his Peter Green-esque solos tumbling down across a shuffling samba rhythm. The flipside 'Dub Guitar' version explores similar sonic territory, amplifying the bass a little while making good use of reverb and delay effects. In a word: gorgeous.

Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

Review: The Vinyl Only label rolls on towards its 20th release here with Mar De Novo serving up the irresistible Apericena EP. 'Quantity Check' is a low-slung funker with noodling baselines and nice loose percussive rhythms under some exotic vocals. 'Blue Eyes Clear' is a more lavish and downtempo number of chilling by the Med come sundown and then comes Ryu's Rub of 'Quantity Check' which is more funky and fat-bottomed. Review: Richard Barratt aka Parrot aka Crooked Man is one of those artists with an indelible sonic fingerprint yet a diverse array of sounds in his arsenal. Here he offers up a pair of different remixes of the same tune, namely Jim v Crooked Man's 'Phoenix' on Vicious Charm Recordings. Review: Ella Guru is a project from the south of Stockholm that features guitarist Tommy Galento (from associations such as OK Star Orchestra and Galento Sound Service) and well known groove machine Daniel Strand from Bike Thieves. Together they bring a lovely Scandi-cosmic twist to deep house grooves having first met back in 2021 at a jam amongst friends. Review: 3 Men Gone Mad were an independent group formed in Blackburn and Darwen in the UK. They fused electronic sounds with rock and were prolific in the 1990s when they became cult favourites amongst those who know. You Try is a much sought-after collection that has been restored by Utopia Records many years after it made its way onto John Peel's 1991 Festive 50. He heard in it a mix of The Clash, Joy Division and Talking Heads and that still rings true. The main mix has a raw energy that captures the angst of Britain at the time - and still today, frankly. A spaced-out dub brings a fresh feeling of euphoria and an extended B-side mix draws out this record's undeniable pleasures.

How's Your Father (5:57)
Review: New label U - Bend debuted back in September with a tidy Balearic 12" and promised that it would "bridge the gap between acid cougars and the namaste death cult." It is the eponymous production team that takes charge of this 12" again and again the vibe is Balearic. 'Rip It Off' starts off with some syrupy and sugary rhythms that are laid back and funky in their own way. Steamy vocals and acidic liens drive to take things higher and on the flip 'How's Your Father' brings some more laid back cool, this time with acoustic guitar strums and cosmic pads.

Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Now though he has opened up his superb archives and invited the one and only Greek maestro Anatolian Weapons to set to work reworking it for this fresh new four-track EP on Transmigration. It's a deep and dubby affair to start with on 'Honeymoon' (Definitive mix) while 'Calling The Quarters' (Beauty Below mix) is awash with trippy electronic lines and shimmering pads. Review: Italian Danilo Braca offers up a superbly summery deep hose single here that is alive with bird calls and beautiful ambiance. There are hooky Balearic guitar riffs stitched into the smooth, shuffling, dusty groove. Breaking waves and seductive sax motifs add further color to the most serene and seductive sounds. After that 12-minute-plus epic on the A-side comes the flip side DJ Spinna Journey mix. It has fleshier drums, and muted acid lines but just as much of an escapist beauty feel. Up first, Kalabrese presents a suberb re-imagining, layering funky keyboards, live drums, and his signature vocals atop the original track. Lauer follows with a leftfield disco piece featuring a lively arpeggio synth, live drums and an infectious melody. Review: Founded in 1984 by the German duo Peter Mergener and Michael Weisser, Software is a mind-opening project in downtempo, cosmic travels. Featuring two carefully selected moments from the band's rich output, 'Sun-Beam' and 'Present Voice', German label Thank You have brought Software's patient, contemplative sound to the fore. The A-side sends listeners far out of orbit with a generous, ten minute long arpeggiated shower, growing elegantly and by gradients into something truly transcendent. The B-side is equally as otherworldly - flecked with eerie moments this track veers between Balearic bliss and an undercurrent of unease. A fantastic and beautifully remastered window into Software's soundworld.

It follows a fine outing on his own Sunken Rock label in the form of his first album Book Of Mirrors and is a delightfully laidback and mellow offing with pads for day demeaning and gentle analogue beats with a warm and fuzzy edge. Released on Technicolour, it followed up on the promise of the Every Body Is Welcome EP for Femme Culture which preceded it. Now she's following up with her third release as Elkka, Harmonic Frequencies. The EP was preceded by the title track last September, which points to a continuation of her refined sound. Fluttering melodies and rave-ready dynamics bounce off each other with abandon, exuding positivity every step of the way. There's an expansive spirit to the EP as Kirby continues developing her sound, not to mention a truckload of good vibes to see us into the Spring in style.

Review: New label Taf Kif kicks off with this classy VA package from some cool cats who know how to lay down a slick groove or two. First up on this distinctly 80s-styled package is Axel Boman, who brings some of his signature sparkling melodies to a synth-pop indebted jam entitled 'Oasis'. Review: The artwork for this new 12" from the System 108 label is eccentric enough to make you want to check out the music even if you don't know the artists. It's the sort of cover that suggests the music will be left of centre and quirky and that it is. 'Sao Januario' is a deep and lazy groove with sunny chords and jazzy keys that take you to the global south. 'Sunny Villa On A Distant Planet' is a twisted disco cut with house leaning drums and big cowbells under intergalactic synth lines. 'Rolando Nascer Do Sol' then rides a crisp electro breakout to keep you on your toes and 'OWL WCS' slows down for a cuddly back-to-mine style closer.

Review: Suoni Incisi is very ably marking itself out as a new school leader in tribal, trance-tinged new age and mind-melting deep techno of the sort that Need and Voices From the Lake have mastered before now. The eponymous artists steps up again here with two more long-form cuts - the first being an undulating, rubbery cut with heady flutes and super-deep bass rotations that sink you into a mindful state immediately. 'Track 2' is no more hurried and again takes a slow-burning approach with languid synths and liquid details peeling off the linear but loose drums. What an EP.

Muqata'a is a key player in the Palestinian electronic scene who has enjoyed - well, earned - a fine upward career arc that has been rooted in a sense of resistance and urgency. Review: What do we think of when someone says the word 'ambient'? Maybe a stupid question, nevertheless the term is often taken as an implication of background sounds, or at least tracks that are loosely structured around ebb and flow rather than rigid forms. In no way a criticism, Luke Haze's Pure Movements offers a counterbalance to that idea.
Dropping on Bristol's Shall Not Fade - essentially an imprint you might as well buy every release from without bothering to listen - this link was always going to be a bit of a clue as to what's on offer. In many ways, the four tracks here play out like breakdowns within late night club sets, hints of euphoria, an atmosphere of build, informed by acid, progressive and techno, but certainly none of the above.

Review: The faultless Razor-N-Tape label has long been one to keep an eye on for fans of all forms of house, disco and plenty in between. This new one from Balearic man Max Essa with slow-motion maestro Eddie C is perfectly timed to arrive as days are getting longer and the sun is out more. It features four lush tunes that roll deep with languid chords, deft little funky guitar riffs and laidback vibes that douse you in all the feels. 'We Live In The Hills' is the standout for us with its fleshy synth work and a sprinkling of tropical percussion.

Review: Mattie Safer, bassist for The Rapture, presents his solo project on Razor-N-Tape. The Lovetempo EP features chilled-out vocal tracks moving between laidback disco, modern bossa nova, and Sade-esque grown-n-sexy jazz grooves. Hitting notes of both melancholy and positivity, Mattie's plaintiff vocals wind through all four of the original songs, delivering catchy and singable hooks. Yuksek's remix of the most uplifting tune takes it to joyous hands-in-the-air territory. A delightful EP that showcases Mattie's versatility and talent, perfectly crafted for those who enjoy a smooth and soulful vibe.

Review: London's Rose Robinson aka Tigerbalm delivers a stunning debut EP on New York's Razor-N-Tape, showcasing her versatile and soulful sound. 'Nina' arrives in three different mixes, all infused with her smooth vocals and lush keys. The original is a low slung affair (feat Farafi) that provides ample mood music, while the thumping Elado mix sets its eyes on the main room, and finally the Voilaaa remix is definitely our favourite - which infuses Afro boogie elements for one seriously infectious version.

Hercules (North Street West Holyvoodou vocal remix) (5:56)
Review: Jo Wallace's Ramrock label has always proved adept at blending reggae, dub and lovers rock with elements of jazz, soul and Balearic beats. You'll find a similar blend of sounds at the heart of the label's latest 12" - a fine, roots reggae style cover version of Aaron Neville's much-loved rare groove jam 'Hercules' by Asian Dub Foundation singer Ghetto Priest. His version (side A) is effortlessly soulful, with warming horns, clipped guitars and his own sublime vocals rising above a languid reggae riddim. Arguably even better is Darren Morris and Ashley Beedle's flipside remix, which adds bluesy pianos, hazy horns, vibrant Clavinet riffs and Ghetto Priest's vocals to a faithful rendition of the swinging, bumpin' groove that made Neville's 1973 version so addictive.

Warm Up Great (5:35)
Review: The Berlin-based brainchild of Byron Yeates, Radiant Love goes from strength to strength, and the label's latest release from Kasra V is no exception. Over the course of this five-track release, full-bodied breaks meet intricate sound design. Striking the perfect balance between dark and light, shifting atmospheres meet satisfyingly glitch-disrupted breakdowns in the opening track, 'Voice Note to Self'. Remixed to perfection thanks to the combined injection of Roza Terenzi and Yeates' signature production styles, Kasra V's more experimental original is reimagined via a pumping, dancefloor ready backdrop. Featuring the playful yet classy inclusion of a growling electric guitar sample, 'Night Prime' moves at a delectable, chugging pace, making the most of the spaciousness it's slowed down pitch affords. Another 10/10 release from this rightly-hailed label.

A Little Treat (4:05)
Deep Water (5:02)
Review: On his Pont Neuf label debut, DJ Psychiatre - a rising star of the French electronic underground who recently released a fine EP on Shall Not Fade - invites us to Enter The Chillzone. The title offers more than a hint of what's inside, as while there are plenty of club-ready moments, the whole thing is heady, loved-up, laidback, atmospheric and melody-rich. For proof, check the lilting lead lines, simmering chords, bubbly acid motifs and shuffling house beats of 'Simple as Fast', the Global Communication-influenced wonder of 'Don't F**k With My Groove' and the string-laden, sunrise-ready warmth of 'Rhythm Is Key'. Elsewhere, 'A Little Treat' is a jazzy trip-hop number smothered in tactile deep house synths, and 'Deep Water' is a luscious downtempo cut of the sort you might have heard in the late 1990s.

Review: Berlin-based musician, producer, and DJ Alex Kassian is well known for his solo works but also his work as Opal Sunn. Here he leaves behind the gritty and sweaty dance floor and heads out into the sun. 'Leave Your Life (Lonely Hearts Mix)' pairs live sounding drums and nice Balearic riffs with care-free feels that lift your spirits. The dance mix is more weight and propulsive and then 'Spirit Of Eden' again sets off through a clear blue sky, with twinkling chords and soft, pillowy drums. The Bill Laswell dub layers in the reverb and slows things down to a nice lazy tempo.

Cloud Worship (5:13)
Pick A Toy (6:29)

Friday Night (5:00)
Review: Under the Jaz alter-ego, John Zahl has been serving up laidback, Balaearic-minded edits of musical obscurities since the mid 2000s. Initially, that was for Claremont 56 offshoot Sixty Five, but in the last decade he's also appeared on Passport To Paradise, Rotating Souls and, most recently, Pinchy & Friends. Here he returns to the latter label with four more rubs of atmospheric cuts from the dusty corners of his record collection. He begins with the wonderfully throbbing, solo-heavy dancefloor synth-scape of 'Cloud Worship', before successfully tinkering with a tactile, semi-organic proto-house gem on 'Pick a Toy'. Over on side B, 'Puzzle' is a tidy revision of a cosmic-minded, French language Balearic synth-pop gem, while 'Friday Night' is an eccentric, off-kilter slab of new wave disco oddness.

Come Inside (Bassapella) (4:07)
Come Inside (instrumental extended Fantasy World mix) (8:09)
Review: Peoples Potential Unlimited hits a rather noteworthy 99th EP with this new and debut single from King Pari. The now LA based foursome make lush bedroom sounds with all the usual proudly analogue production, frayed edges and lo-fi beats you'd expect from PPU. 'Come Inside' was written remotely and "is a reaction to some people's inability to make choices." It has an aching vocal hook front and centre, neat guitar sounds, an 808 knock off and Micro Korg action all adding the finer details. The Bassapella does what it says on the tin and an extended Fantasy World mix heads off into new territory.

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Review: Japanese outfit Inokashira Rangers are the world's finest group of Hammond-heavy reggae cover version maestros. They turn their hands to a range of stone cold Western classics and always bring a little sense of fun to their versions. Here it is Nirvana's Smells 'Like Teen Spirit' which they tackle and it is a much loved cut that always sells out, so now gets a reissue. On the flip side is the equally brillaint but more comic 'Summer Madness' with its pillowy drums and liquid synths. A left of centre brace of tunes but essential none the less.

Now the Japanese covertones throw a curveball, for once reworking some honoured dance music cuts. 808 State's 'Pacific State' and Derrick May's 'Strings Of Life' get a thorough skinhead reggae re-examining.

Review: Inokashira Rangers are kwon around the world as a legendary group of Hammond-heavy reggae masters with a fine knack for laying down big cover versions. Their take on 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was recently reissued to great acclaim recently and now we get two more gems. First is Radiohead's 'Creep' which has haunting leads and echoing pads capturing the freaky vibe of the original. There is a more laidback vibe on the flip with 'I'm Not In Love' which has noodling synths and lazy drum loops sinking you in deep.

Self Isolated
Review: Zapatilla, better known as Louis Hackett, is a founding member of Brownswood 's Owiny Sigoma Band and key collaborator on Eska's Mercury nominated debut album, but has a neat side hustle making house music with one foot in the gentle melodies of Balearic beat and another in the irresistible energy of Afrobeat. It's a recipe that he continues over onto this fine four tracker, which opens with the smoothly grooving but lively 'Like Dat' before 'Zimzimmer' builds up around a gently frenetic Afro guitar riff. On the flip, 'Disco Facial' is slower and more retro, with a synth line that could be from a lost John Carpenter soundtrack. 'Self Isolated' completes the package in its most esoteric fashion, another synth work rooted in the past, this time perhaps echoing the approachable experimentalism of Jean Jacques Perry.

Ginger Cut (Balearic bonus mix) (4:34)
Review: We're happy to report that the music on the 'Son of a Biscuit' EP from Kuwahara aka Mick Wilson and Scott Gray is every bit as colourfully eccentric as the title it bears. 'Ginger Cut' is dubbed up cloud of sound billowing over choppy hip-hop breaks, with an old skool female MC poking her head out of it to have her say every now and again. Rich Tea's edit of the track takes it into housier territory but, like one of those old Orb ambient singles singles on Wau Mr Modo, still gives plenty of work to the studio's echo chambers. 'Jaffa Quake' goes for snazzy, jazzy overtones and off kilter breaks, 'Kustard Cream' offers up reggae skank, again served up with plenty of sonic exotica, and there's even a more relaxed, Balearic bonus mix of 'Ginger Cut'. A thoroughly nutty record, but a genius one at the same time.

Review: Dutch DJ and producer Kennedy has always been rather concerned with dreams and infusing the feeling of them into hazy house music. He has done that mostly on his own Dream Machine label but now lands on the Canadian outlet Pacific Rhythm with three more of his somnambulant sonics. 'Asleep' is all dusty drums and smeared shrouds that encourage the mind to wander, then the Space Ghost remix flips it somewhat into a more potent proposition. On the flip, 'To Paradise' is a classy soundtrack full of introspective pads and 'Signal A5' rounds out another EP that draws on the artist's love of UK Street Soul and cosmic flourishes.

The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. On the back side is a much more stoner-paced and funk drenched laidback instrumental with Balearic guitar licks that look to the stars as organ chords warm you through and the rocksteady rhythm gently sways to and fro. Two gems for sure.

Jimmy Rouge is the man at the controls this time and he wastes no time in heading off to the stars with the cosmic disco workout that is 'Bay Leaf' and its stiff retro arps. 'Rounders' sinks into a more laid-back vibe, with late night chords and gently tumbling drum breaks perfect for seaside dancing.
