Review: Past Inside The Present has really gone to town with the re-release of this 36 album The Lower Lights: it comes in several different formats and vinyl versions with this one being a limited, numbered and opaque red vinyl including a download code. Musically it is just as essential as a collection of tracks from a year-long 'Audio Diary' project undertaken by 36 between April 2018 and April 2019. It first came back in May 2019 and soon sold out, such is the quality of the vibrant and eclectic ambient sounds within. This is not sleep-inducing background material, but rather emotionally charged soundscaping with a mix of dark, futuristic and urgent pieces all making the cut.

Review: Thanks to this lovingly presented reissue from Past Inside The Present, you can own The Lower Lights by 36 in just about whatever coloured vinyl you wish: This is the Past Inside The Present translucent red version with others also available on Juno. It's an album first put together by the label back in 2019 shortly after 36 had finished a year-long 'Audio Diary' project. Not all of the tracks they wrote in that time make the cut, but the best 10 do. They are direct, absorbing and energetic ambient soundscapes that are emotionally charged and demanding of your attention.

Review: .The last full length we had from Federico Amorosi and Valerio Lombardozzi, AKA Dressel Amorosi, was a pretty scary place to spend time. Themed around late-mid-20th Century Italian horror movies (see: Dario Argento), the record paid homage to the iconic sounds of that culture, but also refused to simply rehash the past. An atmospheric, spine-tingling collection of suspenseful synth-first stuff, it also benefited from landing around the same time as a new Stranger Things series. A year on and things are now on a slightly less tense route. Spectrum is still looking to offer thanks to the Italian film industry as was a few decades back - specifically for gifting us so many amazing soundtracks. But this time round we're much closer to the glam and glitz of a Roma Italo party than anything like the Upside Down, while still packing depth and atmosphere.

Review: Andrea opened this sophomore album Due In Color mostly during 2020 and 2021. You may reverb that those times were slightly crazy due to the small matter of a pandemic which is what lead the artists to explore a world of more hazy and experimental jazz sounds. That in turn inspired him to use more acoustic sounds in his music and so this is a record that turns its back on dark and booming club spaces and heads instead towards blooming fields of expansive downtempo, textured ambient and dreamy soundscapes.

Review: Andras Fox is a man of many different talents and aliases, and as A.R.T. Wilson he explores his most new age and ambient soundscapes. Originally conceived as the soundtrack to Rebecca Jensen and Sarah Aitken's contemporary dance piece 'Overworld', this record is at once tinged with an aching nostalgia for a time you probably never actually lived, but also hopeful visions for the future. The tunes are gorgeously airy and empty and unavoidably charming. Gentle rhythms, breaking waves, soft drum patter and sustained pads all add up to heavenly musical painting of idyllic and faraway beaches. The seven years in between this album being first put out and this new reissue have done nothing to diminish its naturalistic charms.

Review: Drawn from a soundtrack Barrott was commissioned to write for the Japanese documentary Johatsu -The Art of Evaporation, this release explores ideas of living simply and focusing on kindness, grace and gratitude. Opening track, 'Kyoto', ripples into focus, floating through a blue-sky dreamscape and punctuated by hazy choral vocals. Another standout track, 'Icarus', is a jazz-electronic fusion piano piece, merging traditional instrumentation with a softly encompassing clarinet solo. A fantastic release from Barrott, taking contemporary Balearic to the next level.

The artist who is also known for his work in Passion Dance Orchestra and as Laurentius is a master of super cool jazz and laid-back lounge electronics that have hints of 80s nostalgia without being too slavish. Originally this one came only on CD and digitally and now it makes its first foray onto vinyl thanks to First on Vinyl out of Japan. Tracks like the lush 'Pulse' are gloriously airy and spring-like montages while there is a little woozy romance to 'Before It Enters My Mind'.

Review: Amsterdam label Music from Memory are steadily becoming the most interesting archivally minded operation out there, with this retrospective of Mallorcan guitarist Joan Bibiloni following essential issues of work by Gigi Masin and Leon Lowman. On El Sur, MFM founders Tako Reyenga, Abel Nagenast and Jamie Tiller cast their gaze over Bibiloni's work from the more experimental era of his long career (he first released a single in 1967) selecting tracks from a six album run which commenced with the album Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila, originally released in 1984. It was during this time that Bibiloni began to compose with the assistance of tape loops, drum computers and synthesisers and these primitive experiments make for compelling listening across the ten tracks on El Sur.

Review: Four new amorphous cuts from Bitchin Bajas, a Chicagoan trio active since 2010, and operating in the circle of freeform, longform, largely formless improv electronica. A staple of the North American music circuit, their live show is a mammoth operation involving tapes and guitars, and their music sounds something akin to what would happen if Terry Riley's Buddha on the front cover of 'Shri Camel' were given an extra bionic limb. Review: James Blake's debut album is undoubtedly one of 2011's most keenly awaited releases, and its arrival via his own (major label funded) Atlas imprint ensures their is no lull in momentum for a producer who enjoyed a watershed 2010 with releases on Hessle Audio and R&S. The results here differ wildly from his previous sonic excursions - gone are the shimmering R&B soaked melodies of "CMYK" and the sheer experimentalism of the Klavierwerke EP, which saw the young Londoner depart from the confines of the dancefloor and enter a realm where there was only a passing reference to rhythm-based music. Instead we are treated to Blake's own yearning, raw voice, delicate pianos and an underlying sense of melancholy. Ubiquitous single "Limit To Your love" and the crackly sonic terrain evoked on "The Wilhelm Scream" are among the most immediately pleasing moments, but there is much to explore here. It's a fascinating opus and surely the catalyst to a long and fruitful career at the top.

Review: Max Guiget under his well-established Blundetto guise is one of France's more soulful producers. He dropped a great soundtrack back in February and now returns with the second volume of his superbly emotive dub work. It is infused with all sorts of knowing references from jazz funk and soul to the best of Italian Library music. 'Count Duke' opens with horizontal sounds, 'Mama Genso' is a playful and flute-led jaunt, 'Capuche' has a darker soul to its mellifluous chords and rolling drums and 'West Highland' is the most spaced out of the lot.

Debts, divorce, and a bed on the backseat of the car she uses to pick customers up.
Faced with this kind of quietly disturbing realism, and a world that exists predominantly as a nocturnal realm, Guiget's work is steeped in brooding atmospheres, but rather than simply looking to build feelings through long refrains and deep dive ambience, there's often a slow but definite, forward-motion rhythm to what's here, with tracks like 'La Chapelle' an eerie yet groovy case in point.

Review: Athens of the North is back in business this new year with a couple of singles as well as a new album dropping before the end of January. This time it is Bo'vel's Changes album that gets served up on wax having teased the act by including them on a compilation Just A Touch late last year. Their soul sound is distantly UK-centric but with influxes from dub, funk and more. That is well showcased here across ten tracks that were famously made in the mid-90s in Manchester without a big budget or big press campaign but became cult classics all the same.

Review: When it comes to a reissue such as this it can't be understated just how arresting the work of Boards of Canada can be in the right situation. This EP, that came to light in between Music Has The Right To Children and Geogaddi, represents the enigmatic duo at their most powerful, channeling their energy into four long-form tracks that draw on all of their combined strengths. "Kid For Today" is haunting and dark but utterly heartbreaking, whilst "Amo Bishop Roden" heads into more mysterious territory. "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country" is eerie in its titular invitation to join a cult, and "Zoetrope" tips its hat to Terry Riley et al in its looping phrases, but really there's no describing the magnificence of these gems, pleasingly reissued on vinyl to beat the Discogs chancers.

Review: Given that it's been eight years since the last Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest should, by rights, push Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in the hype stakes. Certainly, it's a fine set. During their sabbatical, Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison have lost none of their power to amaze and impress. Chords drone, samples hiss, synths shimmer and beats swing. There are intense ambient moments and intoxicating, post-IDM dreamscapes. It is in turns icy, warm, introspective and blindingly picturesque. Throughout, Tomorrow's Harvest is impeccably atmospheric, conjuring images of windswept Scottish moors, becalmed Cornish bays and maudlin pagan ceremonies. As comeback records go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: Originally released at a time when Kruder & Dorfmeister reigned supreme and Germany and Austria boasted some of the finest dub-fired downtempo producers around, Bozoo Bajou's debut album, Satta, was something a sleeper hit. As this 25th anniversary reissue proves, it remains a deliciously languid, laidback and glassy-eyed affair that mixes subtly jazzy instrumentation (Rhodes, jazz guitar etc), dubby bass and luscious string arrangements with slow-motion trip-hop beats and dusty samples. The plentiful highlights include 'Night Over Manaus', a samba-soaked shuffler, luscious opener 'YMA', jazzy head-nodder 'Under Mi Sensi' and the exotic, G-Stone style stoned haziness of 'Bakar'.

Review: The first installment of Late Night Tales' After Dark was that rarest of things: a DJ mix that retained a smoky sense of early morning, home listening atmosphere while retaining an open-minded focus on the dancefloor. This follow-up - once again compiled and mixed by Bill Brewster - offers more of the same. Musically it's pleasingly varied, moving from the string-drenched downtempo beauty of Typesun's "Last One Home", to the heady Balearic rock of General Lee, via Justus Kohnke, the soulful post-bruk smoothness of As One, and the sprightly analogue electronics of Emperor Machine's remix of Paqua's "Late Train". There's also a bunch of previously unreleased tunes to enjoy, including killer contributions from the Mang Dynasty (AKA Ray Mang), The Gino Fontaine (Chicken Lips man Andrew Meecham) and - most surprising of all - The Grid and Robert Fripp.

Sound Metaphors Records has now remastered it and recompiled it for this all new pressing which sends you deep into his mix of ambient, house and Balearic across six sublime cuts. It puts out a pretty high amount of releases and next up is Jeremiah Chiu's In Electric Time, which was made on the Vintage Synth Musems's vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers. He set up with no real aims other than to play and see what came out with help from VSM founder and curator Lance Hill. It is a deep dive into experimental soundscapes and intricate compositions with pulsating rhythms and ethereal melodies that ate you into all new realms. Blending elements of ambient, techno, and avant-garde sound seamlessly, this record pushes the boundaries as it explores all new textures and hypnotic rhythms with cutting-edge sound design.

Review: It's certainly true that Ma Fleur represented a pivotal moment for The Cinematics. The outfit came to fruition, or at least hit the common conscience, in the haze of late-1990s post-trip-hop comedowns, a time when we were all still going harder, faster and stronger in clubs but wanted something cosy and velveteen on the after party hifi at 10AM rather than ketamine techno. Far more innocent times to say the least.
This 2007 record broke from the well established mould of the troupe, though, landing five years after its predecessor (Every Day) and opting for a more direct approach to loveliness. A kind of grab you by the throat and make you feel nice type remit that leaves the subtleties of the past behind in favour of more traditional big room, show stopping song craft.

It's a perfectly horizontal collection of ambient, soft rock and synth sounds for lazy Sunday afternoons that is set to become a crate digger's standard. Fun fact, Tanaka once sued Nicki Minaj for copyright infringement on her hit "Starships".

Review: German-Brazilian artist Gloria de Olivera and David Lynch associate Dean Hugely come together for an album that cerebrates the joy and escapism of dream pop. It is an album on Sacred Bones awash with eerie synth strings that are offset by De Olivera's German vocals. Drums echo the sounds of the early Cocteau Twins and the shimmering synths take you higher. It is a low key work with plenty of lo-fi aesthetics but one that makes a grand emotional impact. 'Hanging Gardens' is a real favourite with its moody backdrop of wooly synths.

Review: The Slow life label branches out into ambient sounds away from their traditional deeper house grooves. It takes the form of an album by France's Deep Nalstrom who has established himself in Bristol with his tripped out and ethereal soundscapes. More of that downtempo magic defines this long player across seven tracks of otherworldly music. Review: This latest edition to the Neroli catalogue sees the arrival of a new album project from long time hero, Kirk Degiorgio. Imbued with folkloric sensibilities, Robe Of Dreams is an example of the sheer transportative abilities of electronic jazz fusion, melding sounds that are almost rooted but not quite of this world. The first track, 'The Ancient City', follows a cresting wave of shimmering synths - a portal into Degiorgio's hypnagogic soundworld. 'I Saw Pharaoh Levitate' features a melody that dances, skipping with the lightest touch across a field of glittering cymbal percussion. 'Sinai' explores the roughened textures of warped electric guitar riffs, woven to create atmospheres of marbled spaciousness and density. 'Robe Of Dreams', however, is the title track for a reason - expanding and contracting piano melodies melt effortlessly into dreamy electronic atmospheres, rising and falling and veering into moments of unsettling minor keys with extraordinary precision. A masterful and spiritual project from the extraordinary musician.

Review: Emotional Rescue go hunting in the reeds for forgotten projects, and come up trumps once again. Delay Tactics formed at the beginning of the 80s as a tape looping project from Carl Weingarten and Reed Nesbit before expanding their palette with Walter Whitney's synth vamping. They didn't last past their second album, 1984's Any Questions?, but now the finest of the band's catalogue has been documented here. The sound is prime inquisitive 80s, teetering between the traditional band dynamic and the experimental pastures of technology-powered music. At times infectiously playful ('Oyster') and at others compellingly beautiful ('Kites'), Delay Tactics are exactly the kind of band that deserve another moment in the sunshine.

Review: Swedish band Dina Ogon have become one of the most celebrated groups in their scene. After their well received ;east album 'Oas' they now return with 'Orion', which includes the already well received lead single 'Glitter.' That tune is, say the band, "a journey upwards, forwards and inwards." That message somewhat gets against their previous vibe with has been described as backward-looking and Nordic-nostalgic. There is still plenty rich dreaminess to their work here with soaring Balearic-pop delights such as 'Jag Vill Ha Allt', glistening cosmic ditties like 'Det Lacker' and the late night soul of 'Mellan De Sju Fjallen' all swelling your heart.

Review: DJ Balduin is back with a new long player some five years after his last. This one comes on Kann Records and is another tasteful trip into the depths of electronic music with trip hop, breakbeat, ambient, tech house and techno all colouring the grooves. Importantly it is steeped in emotion with each of the well crafted sounds hitting a perfect sweet spot. Core to this is the artist's ability to craft perfect loops that can roll for days and never grate. "He doesn't like to think in categories," says the press text. "By reinterpreting genre-specific elements, discovering unheard soundscapes and with a good portion of nostalgia, he sculpts little stories that vibe on dance floors and in living rooms alike." Amen to that.

There's a similarly oddball feel to the up-and=coming French producer's first mini-album, a seven-track selection in which pitched-down, dancehall-influenced rhythms and mutant dub grooves are cannily combined with vibrant, Pilotwings style Balearic synths and other ear-pleasing, retro-futurist sounds.
