A Lifetime On The Hips (hand-stamped 12" Nachpressung)
Cat: SEMID 001. Rel: 16 Jul 20
  1. Sarong Song (8:15)
  2. A Lifetime On The Hips (6:57)
  3. Vernon (7:37)
  4. Lost Quay (6:45)
Review: Although he's been around a few years as a DJ and producer, very little is known about Demi Riquisimo. Going by the slim amount of info on his various social media profiles, we can only assume that he wants to keep it that way. We do know, though, that he favours "disco and acid", and it is this fusion of the soulful and machine-led that can be heard on debut EP "A Lifetime on the Hips". Check, for example, "Sarong Song", where sweeping disco strings and funk-fuelled bass cluster around a razor-sharp synthesizer arpeggio and robotic beats, or the swinging jazz-funk/deep house/sample house hybrid that is "Lifetime On The Hips". Rush-inducing peak-time positivity is provided by the Tiger and Woods style loop-house of "Vernon", while closer "Lost Quay" smothers a functional, mid-tempo house groove in madcap synths, filtered vocal samples and psychedelic electronics.

Calling Out (red vinyl 7")
Cat: CMC 288RED. Rel: 16 Jul 20
  1. Calling Out (7" edit)
  2. Calling Out (7" edit instrumental)
Review: Former Paper Recordings artist Sophie Lloyd apparently started working on "Calling Out" whilst gripped by the January blues. Her intention was simply to make "happy music". To that end, she turned to her gospel roots. The results, shared here on 7" single for the first time, are little less than spectacular. With collaborator Dames Brown in tow, Lloyd's vocals - accompanied by a gospel choir, of course - simply soar above a jaunty, piano-heavy track rich in live instrumentation. It sits somewhere between traditional gospel, house and disco, with a flipside instrumental brilliantly showcasing the quality of the instrumentation throughout. The piano solos, in particular, are breathlessly good.

Ron's Reworks Vol 3 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: RBJ 003. Rel: 15 Jul 20
  1. The Revelation (5:09)
  2. Games You Playin' (5:01)
  3. Bada-Bongo (4:33)
Review: More from the mysterious Ron's Reworks series, which appears (though it has never been confirmed) to have been launched in tribute to late, great Chicago DJ Ron Hardy. The shadowy scalpel fiend (or fiends) behind the series begins volume three with "Revelation", a sparkling rearrangement of a life-affirming, piano-laden number that sits somewhere between jazz-funk, Latin jazz, spiritual jazz and disco. It is, beyond a shadow of doubt, one of the most positive tracks you'll hear all month. Elsewhere, "Games You Playing" is a synth-sporting slab of disco-funk heaviness, and "Bada Bongo" a percussive, break-driven, bongo-laden workout guaranteed to get limbs moving on the dancefloor.

Let Me Ride: KON Remix (reissue) (7" Nachpressung) (1 per customer)
Cat: 001. Rel: 15 Jul 20
  1. Mothership Konnection (5:10)
  2. Mothership Konnection (instrumental dub) (4:33)
Review: "Mothership Connection (Star Child)" by funk legends Parliament was the third and last single released from the group's highly acclaimed 1975 album of the same name. After six years and much fanfare (including some from George Clinton himself), this sought-after KON remix is finally on 7" with a new EQ on the A side and a handy instrumental dub on the flip titled "Mothership Konnection" (see what he did there?). According to the man himself, "another sure shot rework from the stems ... recognizing the pure genius of George Clinton and crew, P-FUNK. So many layers in this session, it's amazing how much is really going on musically".

  1. Bad Times (Yam Who? remix) (6:46)
  2. Bad Times (7:15)
  3. You Must Be The Girl (5:51)
  4. Bionic Lover (6:35)
Review: Glyne Braithwaite has been a fixture of London's soul-fired house and disco scenes for decades, though it's only in recent years that he's started to make his mark musically under the Risk Assessment alias. His latest EP is naturally focussed around his cover of Captain Rapp electrofunk classic "Bad Times". Braithwaite's version (which, we think, features vocal snippets from a previous cover) is fairly faithful, though his version of the headline-grabbing bassline is altogether weightier (a good thing) and the included guitar solos much jazzier (also a good thing). On his remix, Riot label boss Yam Who takes the track to even greater heights, largely by adding production polish and some sparkling additional synths. Two rock-solid flipside re-edits of original disco-boogie gems complete a tidy EP.

  2. Island Times - "Together" (5:47)
  3. Umberto Lumber - "Between Those Sheets" (4:54)
Review: Chubby Irish groove hounds Fatty Fatty return with another sublime funk-stacked V/A three tracker. Local lad Crown Prince Of Waterford (not to be confused with the legendary blues singer) lays down a furiously funky jam about having fun at the fairground while fellow Emerald Isle strutter Island Times returns Fatty Fatty with a loose-limbed falsetto-loaded twanger. Finally, we fly off into the Italian sunset with a stunning slow jam from Umberto Lumber. A twinkling slo-mo chugger with serious cosmic tendencies, what a way to finish an EP.

  1. Tiger Stripes
  2. Tiger Stripes (extended version)
  3. You Can't Hold Me Down
  4. You Can't Hold Me Down (extended version)
Review: Arthur Russell and Nicky Siano... You'd donate a crucial limb to be in the studio when these were conjured, right? Expertly extended with full emphasis on the groove, Sleeping Bag have treated the heritage with the utmost respect. The guitar and horn noodles and dynamics of "Tiger Stripes" are given heaps of space to do their thing while the percussive groove takes on an even more hypnotic edge. Meanwhile on "You Can't Hold Me Down", the scratchy, unrelenting guitar rhythmic backbone remains the main focus while more attention has been paid to the drums, most notably the weightier kicks. A very respectful revisitation.

Can't Get Enough (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: FINE 062EPV. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. Can't Get Enough (extended vocal) (6:44)
  2. Can't Get Enough (Yuksek remix) (4:34)
  3. Can't Get Enough (Dubstumental) (5:19)
Review: Had we been able to flock to clubs and festivals this summer, this soaring disco earworm from Belgian nu-disco don and French legend Dimitri From Paris would have sound-tracked many a giddy, hedonistic moment. In its original "Extended Vocal Mix" form,"Can't Get Enough" is a sublime slice of authentically celebratory disco revivalism laden topped off with a superb lead vocal from singer Leela. The accompanying "Dubstrumental" also hits all of the right turn-of-the-80s disco dub mix notes - think extended percussion breaks, stripped-back instrumental passages etc - while Yuksek's fine remix takes the track further towards "French Touch" style disco-house territory with an added dose of delay-laden proto-house magic. Big!

I Know You Care (reissue) (Juno exclusive) (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: EX 7014WHITE. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. I Know You Care (Arranged & Produced By Roy Ayers) (5:18)
  2. It's Your Love (Arranged & Produced By Roy Ayers) (4:01)
Review: In soul connoisseur circles, Ethel Beatty will forever be remembered for her sole single on Roy Ayers' Uno Melodic label, which first slipped out in 1981. This Expansion Records reissue - pressed on white vinyl in a Juno exclusive - proves why it is still so well thought of. A-side "I Know You Care" is super-sweet, with Roy Ayers' immaculate production wisely focusing on Beatty's lovelorn vocal, and a disco era deep soul groove that's effortlessly warm and tactile. Also impressive is flipside "It's Your Love", Beatty's sugary but emotive rendition of a Dee Dee Bridgwater and Ayers composition that features some skittish, jazz-dance friendly drums and all-round soothing and seductive vibe.

  2. Los Conquistadores Chocolates (Moplen Dizco Delight - part 2) (8:02)
Review: Johnny Hammond's "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is a seminal slice of long form jazz funk from 1975, which has long been coveted by collectors and DJs and flexed over by dancers for decades. Now expert disco archaeologist and multi-track remixer par excellence Moplen has taken this holy grail to task with a respectfully epic two part opus that takes up both sides of this 12" on High Fashion. This is editing as carried out with utmost reverence for the source material and the hands-on ways in which the pioneers first carried out this ritual of extending the groove. If you need a lesson on how an edit should be done, look no further.

Give Me Your Love (reissue) (7" Nachpressung)
Cat: SB 7UMG1. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. Give Me Your Love (4:18)
  2. Try It, You'll Like It (3:27)
Review: You'll struggle to find a more loved-up and life-affirming chunk of proto-disco brilliance than The Sisters Love's 1973 "Give Me Your Love". The record's lasting impact can be seen in the number of times that it's been reworked, re-edited or bootlegged over the years. Here it gets an official 7" reissue via Soul Brother Records. It sounds as good as ever, with the all-female group's now familiar vocals rising above Blaxploitation style guitars, fluttering flutes and powerful horns. It's a celebratory release, and then some. This time round it's accompanied by a lesser-known gem, "Try It, You'll Like It", which first featured on the B-side of a 1973 single. This is a powerful chunk of conscious funk/soul fusion of the sort that was incredibly popular during the period it was recorded.

  2. Ever Changing Bubbles (Deep88 Balearic dub) (5:29)
Review: They don't come much classier than Claremont 56, a label that deals in famously horizontal sounds that are superbly high quality. Deep88 is an Italian with a loveably analogue sound that is steeped in sunset house vibes. Add the two together and you have a perfect match. The a-side here finds Deep88 turn DJ Rocca and Leo Almunia's "Ever Changing Bubbles" into a lush Ibizan beach scene with sweet yacht rock riffs, warm drums and vocals that add an exotic feel. They're removed on the dub which is even more hypnotic.

Heart's Desire (reissue) (Juno exclusive) (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: DB1 2010WHITE. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. Heart's Desire (4:29)
  2. Holding You Loving You (4:12)
Review: You may have noticed a fair few limited-edition white vinyl releases popping up on Juno in recent times. Here's another, this time from Expansion Records. What's on offer is certainly tempting: two much-sampled gems from 1980s electrofunk and jazz-funk maestro Don Blackman. On the A-side you'll find "Heart's Desire", a jaunty slab of jazz-funk-soul rich in multi-tracked scat style vocalizations, rubbery slap-bass, deep chords and jazzy solos. It's a stone-cold classic all told and really deserves to be in every soul head's collection. Turn to the flip for "Holding You, Loving You", a sumptuous slow jam that's as languid, loved-up and subtly summery as they come.

When You Touch Me (white vinyl 12")
Cat: WES 22122WHITE. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. When You Touch Me (vocal - Larry Levan mix) (10:40)
  2. When You Touch Me (instrumental - Larry Levan mix) (11:05)
Review: Taana Gardner had plenty of huge disco hits in her arsenal and for that reason was a voice frequently heard at cult stateside clubs like The Loft, Studio 54 and Paradise Garage throughout the 70s and 80s. Larry Levan of course was one of those who gave her such a big platform and here we're presented with two of his mixes of her "When You Touch Me" single. The vocal is an intense jazz-funk ride with mad keys and a groove to die for, all with those sensuous vocals up top. The instrumental is no less intense, but allows the skilled instrumentation and bristling arrangement to really shine through.

Take It Easy 003 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Dirty Channels - "Guava Juice"
  2. DJLMP - "Track 3994"
  3. Memoryman Aka Uovo - "I Wonder"
  4. Bugsy - "Pomiri Dan"
Review: Take It Easy are a Milan-based crew who love nothing better than the sweet fusion between classic disco sounds and upfront house music energy. Dirty Channels capture that spirit perfectly on this third release on the label, opening up this split 12" with the crisp and strutting "Guava Juice". DJLMP takes things in a more psychedelic, tripped out direction for the more adventurous groove hounds before longstanding champion Memoryman Aka Uovo gets dusty and woozy with "I Wonder". Bugsy completes the set with the feisty stomp and sizzling tension of "Pomiri Dan".

  1. Melvin Bliss - "Synthetic Substitution" (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (4:17)
Review: The popular Breaks & Beats series of light-touch, DJ-friendly re-edits of soul and funk classics has decided to reissue some of its most sought-after seven-inch singles on clear vinyl pressings. Fittingly, the first to get the reissue treatment is the label's first ever release from 2017. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's warm, heartfelt, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original is largely kept in-tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat. Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.

On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era". Cat: CHXW 904Y. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Windy City Theme (2:44)
  2. Show Me The Way To Love (3:27)
Review: Throughout the 1960s and'70s, producer and A&R man Carl Davis was one of the pivotal figures on the Chicago soul scene. Yet despite producing hundreds of records, he only ever released a few under his own name, the highlight of which was undoubtedly 1976's "Windy City Theme". Released on his own Chi-Sound label and backed by the orchestra he used on recordings by such artists as the Chi-Lites, the track is a musically detailed chunk of distinctive mid-tempo disco rich in mazy sax solos, sweet female backing vocals, and seriously undulating grooves. On this timely reissue, the track is naturally backed by its' original B-side, a sugary chunk of polished, richly orchestrated soul called "Show Me The Way To Love".

Review: Edinburgh's Athens Of The North label is endlessly flawless and this time around they pull together the special lovers rock covers they put out at the end of last year onto a superbly strong 12 track compilation. It arrives just in time for the warmer months and has been curated by Sam Don and overseen by label boss Euan Fryer. Standouts include Christine Lewin's lush take on the heavily sampled "Juicy Fruit" while the lo-fi bliss of Al Charles's "Outstanding" is another one to swell the heart and sooth the soul. For more sentimental moments check Family Love's "Do Me Baby." Overall, though, this is a must buy.

Review: Three years on from the release of his terrifically Balearic and glassy-eyed debut LP on Running Back, Lewis Day AKA Tornado Wallace offers up a sequel of sorts: a fine mini-album that marks his first appearance on JD Twitch's admirable Optimo Music label. The collected cuts still contain some of the Australian producer's sonic hallmarks - those colourful synths and so on - but the overall mood is far more psychedelic, intense and otherworldly than some may expect, with definite nods towards feverish African rhythms, humid ambient techno, raw early '80s new wave cuts and the hallucinatory electronics of early goa trance. It's a definite sonic shift, but one that's hugely successful. In fact, it may well be his most alluring release to date.
