Belpaese 02 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: BELP 002. Rel: 07 Nov 18
  1. Dal Vivo (9:26)
  2. Moribonda (4:41)
  3. Sara Uno Smacco (5:50)
Review: Back in August, Shadowy Italian re-edit crew Belpaese impressed with their first self-titled EP, which offered up decidedly cosmic and Balearic-minded reworks. There's more on offer on this similarly fine second set of revisions. On side A you'll find "Dai Vivo", an extended, near ten-minute revision of a quirky European disco-rock record of the kind that Daniel Baldelli may once have rocked at the Cosmic Club. On the reverse, "Moribonda" is a fine version of a synth-laden, turn-of-the-'80s Italian disco-pop/funk-rock record (think Greg Kihn Band and you're close), while "Sara Uno Smacco" is a sleazy, slo-mo disco delight.

  1. Salmon Spungcake (Conrad McDonnell Zip It Shrimpy mix) (6:52)
  2. Salmon Spungcake (Conrad McDonnell I Think I've Got Gout mix) (7:21)
Review: "Salmon Spungcake" was one of the last things Claremont 56 super-group Bison recorded before the sad passing of two of its' founder members, Holger Czukay and Ursula Kloss in the summer of 2017. Two years on from its initial release, Bison members Ben Smith and Paul 'Mudd' Murphy (also label boss) have decided to get it remixed, with original producer Conrad McDonnell (he of Idjut Boys fame) providing two suitably heavy dub disco interpretations, making this the band's first release since the passing of Czukay and Kloss. Check first the spacey A-side hypnotism of the "Zip It Shrimpy Mix", where melancholic chords and spaced-out vocal snippets wrap around a particularly percussive dub disco groove. Arguably even better is the stripped-back, bass-heavy and reverb-rich "I Think I've Got Gout Mix", which sounds like it was tailor-made to manipulate mangled minds at four in the morning.

  1. Sangre (10:05)
Review: Tribal, physical, psychedelic: Joe Claussell's Bolla project is one of his finest creative accomplishments for many fans, and his album Afrikan Basement: Makussa is the gift that keeps on giving. Having previously leaked limited 12"s, Joe's label Sacred Rhythm does it again with another super-limited, one-sided press. Hooky, insistent and far-out for the full 10 minutes, this is shaman material right here. Do not sleep.

  2. Take Me I'm Yours (instrumental) (6:59)
Review: We can think of a fair few disco diggers who will be more than a little annoyed by this re-issue. Originally released on the obscure La Shawn label back in 1980, "Take Me I'm Yours" is widely considered to be one of Patrick Adams' best productions. It's certainly something of a dusty gem, with Mary Clark's soulful, country-tinged vocals simply soaring over a reggae-tinged, string-drenched disco groove. It would have been nice to have seen original flipside "You Got Your Hold On Me" included, but it's not a major issue; given the in-demand (and hard-to-find) nature of the A-side, we should be pleased it's come back round again.

Review: This time last year, French combo Cotonete joined forces with Brazilian singer Di Melo to deliver what became one of the sleeper hits of last summer - the Latin disco/jazz-funk fusion of "A.E.I.O.U.". Here they continue their partnership with a first collaborative full length. It's a quietly impressive outing, with Di Melo's distinctive vocals rising above cuts that variously doff a cap to sultry Brazilian disco-funk, Azymuth-esque jazz-funk, soundtrack-friendly cinematic soundscapes, Astrud Gilberto style sweetness and humid salsa-funk (standout "Kilario (2019 Version)". It's a warm, loose and hazy set that feels authentically South American despite its Parisian roots.

  3. Whistle Bump (7:43)
Review: Having previously dipped into the back catalogue of a host of disco, house and U.S garage acts, Groovin' Records has decided to offer up a trio of tracks from jazz-funk maestro-turned-disco don Eumir Deodato. First up is John "Jellybean" Benitez's superb 1982 remix of "Keep On Movin", a dreamy disco club-cut rich in bold slap bass, swirling chords and sweet female vocals. Benitez is also at the controls on "Keep It In The Family (Remix)', another 1982 rework of one of Deodato's most famous disco-era anthems (check the clips - you'll be singing along within seconds). To round things off, the label steps back to 1978 with the hard-to-find and in-demand 12" version of jazz-funk/disco classic "Whistlebump".

Review: Famously, multi-instrumentalist Son Dexter was "spotted" by Larry Heard, who helped produce two 12" singles for him at the turn of the millennium. Since then, his output has been sporadic to say the least. As this surprise 12" on Downbeat Special Edition proves, he's lost none of his skills. Each of the four tracks - think laidback deep house/disco fusion - is built around live instrumentation played and recorded by the producer himself, ensuring a sensual, soulful and wonderfully organic feel throughout. Vocalist Eric Anderson lends a hand on opener "I Believe", while standout "Eternity of Love", featuring his own early '80s style rap, is a Dam Funk style electrofunk delight.

Review: The DNA Edits label gets right to the heart of the music it reworks and adds to, subtracts from, or extends all the key elements required to make it absolute dance floor dynamite. DJ DSK is behind the sixth EP - which lands just ahead of a very fun 7" that is made up of short samples from various Street Fighter console games. Once again here the crate digging, breaks making splicer and dicer comes correct across a duo of beefy beats, sunny soul jams and funked up loops that will get you in the mood to groove.

Review: It's been a while since we had a sesh with DJ Monchan, since late 2017 to be precise, but he's making up for lost time with this super smooth four track floor burner. Deeply dug, cleverly layered and rearranged and tailored for the dance, each cut tickles a different corner of the soul; "Heart Breaks" brings serious dollops of slimy, sleazy bass under sultry lyrics, "Feel The Groove" is all about those heavenly cascading scat vocals, "Party Down" whirls and stuns with a fiery freestyle jazz funk swoon while "Can't Lose The Feeling" brings us back home on the most chic of touches. Time to glide away on those strings.

Review: Fruit released one single in 1978: the audaciously funky "If You Like It Say Yeah". A staple for those-in-the-know, it regularly passes hands for triple figures. It transpires that the band also recorded an album which, until now, has never seen the light of day. Madness! Thanks to Athens Of The North's digging/negotiating skills, for the first ever we can imbibe the turbo charged jazz of "Say It", we can shake ourselves sweaty to the rampant funk of "Life Is A Challenge" and we can get super freaky to the bee's nest bass and p-funk wiliness of "Fruit Of The Universe". We can plenty more too... That's only three of 10 unreleased gems on here. Magic.

Review: Legendary Harlem label Queen Constance brought the world the most raw and authentic disco direct from the source. Years later, collectors and dancers alike still fawn over plenty of its output and now two of its more notorious tracks get on-point edits by contemporary stars Kon and Moplen. With Kon at the buttons, High Voltage's "Rock Spank Freak" is tweaked and coerced, with extended funk breakdowns and heavier bottom ends. Moplen then adds some extra colour and pumps up the trumpet lines to make for an unabashedly glorious disco stomper. This is a 100% legit reissue with fresh remastering, so do not sleep.

Review: Given that they released their first 12" nearly 20 years ago, it's somewhat surprising to find thatCellar Door is the Idjut Boys first "proper" album of original material. There have, of course, been other albums - a 2002 collaboration with Quakerman on Glasgow Underground, 2009's Rune Lindbeak hook-up as Meanderthals (on which they were rumoured to have done most of the work) and a string of typically dubbed-out disco re-edit collections (Phantom Slasher, Noid etc) - but nothing that could be called a definitive Idjuts album.Cellar Door, then, should perhaps be seen as a neat bonus rather than the culmination of a career that has stuttered between sublime brilliance and aloof eccentricity. Listened to on those terms, it's even better than you'd expect. First of all, it's a proper album in the old fashioned sense. Clocking in at under 40 minutes - like many of the greatest albums of the vinyl era - it shimmers with Balearic intent. Heady and intoxicating on one hand, sweet and country-tinged on the other, it's a grown up, radio-friendly set that should please those with a penchant for glistening Balearica.

Review: Less than three months have passed since the first volume in the Cult Edits series arrived in stores, but already the Multi-Culti crew has rustled up another quartet of weird and wonderful reworks. We're particularly enjoying the bizarre chanted vocals and druggy electrofunk flex of Inigo Vontier's brilliantly madcap "Cha Cha Cha", though the dense, post-punk Afro-tribal romp that is Dreem Lion's "Acid Se Con Do" is also superb. If percussion-laden heaviness is your thing, be sure to check Alex Le Tan's rework, which brilliantly breathes new life into a chant-tastic chunk of carnival ready drum circle insanity.

Review: One of disco's biggest divas gets served up on a red hot platter here by Vinylators. "Extended Woman" is eight plus minutes of bubbling, piano laced and string happy disco with the iconic "I'm every woman" vocal taking centre stage over nice clipped drums. It's a tasteful edit that brings all the key parts to the fore. "Piano Woman" is more stripped back, with plenty of emphasis on some busy piano playing and the soaring original vocal left in place up top. "Dub Woman" is more paired back and built on the leggy drums, while plenty of golden strings add real colour.

His latest two-track missive for the Swedish institution is also white-hot. A-side "Bump" is a soaring disco epic that cleverly builds in waves, moving from a bongo pattern intro to a sweaty orchestral conclusion via all manner of instrument solos and dub-wise effects. "Know", on the other hand, sees him offer up a brilliantly judged, hot-stepping revision of a familiar Chaka Khan tune that was also recently revised by Bugz In The Attic.

Review: Following BBE's release the Chicago troupe's Devil Made Me Do It earlier this year, Athens Of The North ensure the criminally over-looked/under-paid band continue to remain in the spotlight with an entire album of unreleased material. Recently excavated from a Chicago warehouse, complete with masters, the songs were written and recorded in the mid '70s not long before the band eventually split. If you know their material, you'll already know how funky the band are. If not, dig deep at the soonest opportunity. From the toxic-levels of cosmic funk on "Boogie" to the dreamier, space ballad "Dark Moon", this is the sound of a super-tight, incredibly talented funk band who really should have been up there with Cymande or Average White Band.

Leading the way on The Claudio Gentile Release is a Foolish Felix dub of Cage & Aviary's "Lean On Me" whose deranged acid gurglings provide a nice contrast to the thrusting Escape From East London stylings of Posthuman's "Make More Men". Review: Described in the accompanying press release as "the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic", Rupa Biswas' 1982 debut "Disco Jazz" has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered diggers with a healthy bank balance and a penchant for the quirky. All four tracks are cheery, charming and superior to many "Bollywood disco" records produced in the same period. The sunny disco-boogie of "Moja Bhari Moja" is followed on side A by the delightfully eccentric, bass-powered AOR-disco/funk-rock fusion of "East West Shuffle" and the effortlessly Balearic cheeriness of "Aaj Shanibar". Best of all, though, is the exotic and intoxicating flipside cut "Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya" which expertly joins the dots between cosmic rock and Balearic disco grooves for 16 spellbinding minutes.

Review: Three words: stone, cold, classics. Taken from three of Gino's four only albums, you'll be hard pushed to find anything better on reissue this week. "Try It Out" (from his 1981 album Closer) has that fat plucked dust-biting bassline to die for and ultra-feelgood vocals. "Dancer" (from his 1979 album Outline) takes us to the races with its pacey piano pumps and relentless energy while "It's Alright" (from his 1982 album Face To Face) shows a more low-swung sultry vibe with a walking bassline that just won't quit. Do as Gino says and try them out... You won't be disappointed.

Review: There's a slightly different feel to the latest instalment of the fantastic "Africa Airways" compilation series. While previous instalments have largely focused on heavy Afro-funk and Afro-soul, this fifth edition showcases material recorded during the disco and boogie era (1976-82). The ten included tracks are superb, with highlights including the fuzzy, Clavinet-driven thrills of "Sweet Sidney (Edit)" by Black Bells Group, the heavy grooves and dancing synth lines of Gyedu Blay Ambolley's "Highlife", the spacey Afro-boogie badness of Fotso's "French Girl" and the flash-fried disco-funk celebration that is Jide Obe's spacey, Moog-sporting "Too Young". As the old cliche goes, this is all killer and no filler.
