  2. Dane & Khotin - "System" (5:23)
  3. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
  4. Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

  2. Eyes Of Glass (instrumental) (7:13)
Review: To accompany their re-release of East Wall's superb 1991 debut album, Silence, Dark Entries has decided to put out the Italian band's forgotten debut release, 1985 single "Eye of Glass". Tending towards the darker end of the Italo-disco spectrum, but blessed with typically cheery synthesizer melodies and skewed female vocals, it's a record that seems far more inspired by the earlier British new wave synth-pop movement than pleasing the clubs of Rome or Rimini. The vocal version is accompanied by a subtly different instrumental, which includes waves of warm synths and offers more prominence to the band's bubbly electronics, throbbing arpeggio bassline, and delay-laden drum machine hits.

Review: The Loft Party is a new EP from Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee who have named in no doubt with a nod to the David Mancuso parties that would well have found the music contained within irresistible. It's an EP that wastes no time in getting you on the floor thanks to the irresistible funk bass of opener 'Be Free.' The Nebraska remix is a more straight up house pumper with tons of synth effects bubbling away and 'Mista Groove' then slips into a more cool and seductive groove that is heavy on the keys. A further two boogie infused cuts keep the quality levels high.

Review: Given their contributions to the label over the years, it's perhaps fitting that Editorial's special Record Store Day release comes from experienced re-editors and bespoke mash-up merchants Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee. There's plenty of floor-friendly fire to be found lurking on the EP, from the pumped-up, electrofunk-era disco-funk bounce of "The Need Inside", to the solo-laden funk shuffle of sax-laden groover "Dat Funk" and hip-hop tempo heaviness of "Lemonade", whose dusty breakbeats will delight hip-hop DJs. The undoubted highlight, though, is the organ-sporting peak-time chug of "Layover Blues", which is also given a dazzling, funk-fuelled house makeover by sometime Mr Saturday Night label contributor Nebraska.

Review: The latest release on admirable Detroit institution Rocksteady Disco comes from Eddie Logix, a producer who has been around the fringes of the Motor City scene for some time. There's much to admire on his label debut, from the tasty Latin horns and tropical house grooves of opener "Que Locos", to the skewed drums, dub disco bass and Steely Dan style guitar solos of superb closing cut "Bottle Rocket". Sandwiched in between you'll find two similarly tasty slabs: the delay-laden Latin jazz-house headiness of "Sunday Palaver" and the more electronic sounding deep house goodness of "Baby Girl".

Review: For their latest trick, Yam Who's Riot label has decided to offer up a brand new edition of Alton Edwards' 1981 UK electrofunk classic "I Just Wanna (Spend A Little Time With You)". You'll find Edwards' superb original vocal version on the flip, where his part whispered, part sung vocals rise above thickset, mind-altering synth-bass, drum machine beats and some seriously punchy horn lines. The obligatory 21st century updates come courtesy of Full Intention man Michael Gray, who delivers a suitably pumped up boogie-house vocal revision before dropping a similarly chunky dub that wisely makes much of the original bassline and Edwards' whispered vocal passages.

Review: Denie Corbett, Marva Hicks, Susan Beaubian, Sylvia Striplin and Vivian Prince are Eighites Ladies, a vocal ensemble best known for their hit 'Turned On To You'. An iconic rare groove gem from the 80s, it has since been sampled any number of times by giants like A Tribe Called Quest. An edited version has been put out before on an Expansion 7" but an extended version has alway been sought after. Well, here it is along with 'Give Me Your Love', a solo tune from Sylvia. 'Sing Me' also makes the cut to ensure this soul gem is an essential pick up.

Review: Edit EP delves back into the vaults to uncover a glorious set of '70s and '80s disco gems. The third instalment from the well known Brighton based record label sees the return of Eintopf alongside resident producers and label mates, breathing new life into unknown rarities. Retouched, reloved and reworked to offer a fresh spin on the originals, highlights are undoubtedly on the A side, with Cutty Sark's rework of a certain neon-lit boogie down number ("Proper Nawty"), the romantic and soulful number "Start Again" with Eintopf and Chalk Hill's respectful edit of a right classic ("Control Me") on the flip.

Review: Afro disco fresh from 79: Eko Roosevelt Louis's third album Funky Disco Music will go down as one of Cameroon's finest disco LPs. Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. For contemporary kicks Riccio has expertly touched the title track for a modern dancefloor/DJ friendly punch. Perfect.

Review: Eddie C's Red Motorbike journeys on with another tasty 7" morsel from the boss himself, this time split with Elado. That is who goes first on the guitar licked, Americana tinged, disco dripped "Hipos" which is a perfect tune for gazing off at a distant sunset as you sway to and fro on an outdoor dance floor. Eddie C's "Crazy Heart" chugs a it harder, with busy melodic phrases riding up and down the scale over chunky drums. As always with Red Motorbike, this is grown up music for grown up dance floors, but that's not to say it isn't hella fun.

Now those tunes are presented here with rich and intricate orchestral arrangements that were added by producer Jimmy Salcedo when the tunes were later re-recorded for Codiscos in his native Colombia. Mysterious newcomer producer Demi Riquisimo takes care of the opener with a remix of Elia y Elizabeth's signature hit 'Alegria' that is brilliantly tropical and new age. Parisian Yuksek then also works the same tune into a lush mid tempo disco stomper. Reverse the 12" and you'll find Bostonian-come-Colombian BOSQ flipping 'Soy Una Nube' init a soul enriched banger and Baranquilla natives Vagabundo Club Socia close things out with some up tempo funk and precise drum work. Review: Mysterious UK artist Elixia released just one record, and it was this one back in 1983. Utterly futuristic and filled with mad studio trickery, it's a deconstructed disco tune with myriad filters, phasers and multi-track trickery, jazz-funk instrumentals and whistles, bells, the lot. It's a rather under the radar track that deserves more attention and now gets it thanks to this full reissue. Both versions bare plenty of the same elements, but each one is arranged in a different fashion and with different effects playing out on each. Drop this one and watch the crowd erupt.

  4. I Wish I Knew The Words (5:30)
Review: Last year, Marcel Vogel dusted down his Em Vee edit alias for the first time in three years, serving up a tasty four-pack of reworks for OYE's ongoing Edits series. It clearly inspired him to make more reworks, because now he's popped up on Razor-N-Tape with another fine selection of scalpel revisions. He begins by reworking a tongue-in-cheek chunk of disco silliness rich in spacey Moog lines and wonky vocals ("You Move Me"), before tweaking and rearranging a superb chunk of Latin-tinged tropical disco ("Spreading Energy"). "Don't Be Sabi Say" is a high-tempo chunk of Afrobeat/Afro-disco fusion full of ear-catching Nigerian vocals and bustling electric piano riffs, while "I Wish I Knew The Words" is a cheeky revision of an obscure Japanese synth-boogie number.

Review: Astonishingly, original copies of Energize's 1979 private press single "Piece of Class" have changed hands for over 500 quid online. Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. B-side "Star of the Disco" is an even more up-tempo affair, with mazy saxophone solos, rasping horn stabs and starry jazz-funk keys riding a walking bassline and high-octane disco drums.

Fast forward three years and Eros has raised once again, Lazarus style, with the commencement of a new series that veers away from the electronic focus of those previous records to the outright flamboyant styles of disco. All three tracks here are untitled, so the disco scholars out there will have plenty of fun seeking out the source material but really the dancers will have more reacting to these cuts. Track 2 in particular features some sublime phasing and edits.

Review: Since first appearing last summer the label has retained its air of self imposed anonymity, while keeping the spotters busy with a supremely rewarding approach to digging up and re-editing "lost classics from the raw, decadent and formative birth of club music" in a manner befitting of modern dancefloors. People who class themselves as knowledgeable on the sounds that pumped out from the mixing desk of Ron Hardy at the height of his popularity probably won't have much trouble placing the source material for the four tracks here, but the genius of the EROS series is the way they've been edited which betrays a mastery and understanding of the music a legion of soundcloud dwelling hopefuls could only dream of. As the series' final release, it's hard not to think of the often stated platitude that all good things must come to an end.

  1. Funny Feeling (3:28)
  2. Shake Your Body (At The Disco) (2:54)
Review: Athens of the North has barely put a foot wrong of late, but even by their high standards the label's latest 45 is rather special. It sees them flip a thoroughly obscure modern soul seven-inch originally released in 1980 on a "tiny local label" in the U.S called Shore Records. It was, and remains, the sole release by the mysterious E.S Funk. A-side 'Funny Feeling' offers a delicious fusion of floor-friendly grooves - check, in particular, the crunchy, snare-heavy beat - immaculately played and produced instrumentation and a catchy chorus. 'Shake Your Body (At The Disco)' is an altogether funkier, club-focused affair whose most prominent features are a rubbery slap-bass line, dancer-friendly drum-breaks and horn and synth lines that seem to be playfully sparring with each other.

Review: Escort's back catalogue is hotter than the sun, so we're glad that it keeps getting revisited. This latest missive is a first ever pressing to 7" vinyl for two tidy tracks. Electropop banger 'Body Talk' is first up with its lung busting vocals, jangling pop chords and nice nimble drum work all finished off with some big retro future synths. On the flip, nu-disco master and New York mainstay Darshan Jesrani serves up a dub of 'Temptation' that is another fresh take on the third and tested genre with laser like synths and mechanical grooves that ooze futuristic soul. Dynamite tracks that will inject any party with real energy.

Their new track "Slide" was co-written with NYC soul artist Denitia and drives you gently with this west coast influenced roller produced by Eugene Cho and Jkriv - and featuring Adeline's wonderful vocal delivery. We absolutely adored this slick and low slung boogie-down number. For something more uplifting (and with dancefloor dynamics) you can try the classic '70s disco explosion of "Ride" (feat Brian Jackson) on the flip, which calls to mind the classic vibe of masters like Salsoul, Moulton Studios et al.

Animal Nature
Cat: ESCRT 027. Rel: 29 Sep 20
  1. Animal Nature (4:31)
  2. Barbarians (Tiger & Woods remix) (4:27)
Review: NYC disco-house revival group Escort released their second album Animal Nature in 2015., and have followed it up with another sleek and funky affair in 2019. But this single comes from that second album and is backed with another one from the same LP, but remixed by Tiger & Woods. 'Animal Nature' is filled with warm, future retro synths that reverberate up and down the scale while the clean vocals for way up above. The Tiger & Woods remix is a camp, stomping disco house workout with a brilliant bassline. This, then, is a red hot little 7".

Take You To A Secret Place (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NAAR 011. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Take You To A Secret Place
  2. Take You To A Secret Place (dub mix)
  3. Take You To A Secret Place (Kuniyuki Hard remix)
  4. Take You To A Secret Place (Angophora remix)
Review: Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Totem (Swamp/Hardway Brothers/Otologic mix)
Cat: KF 013. Rel: 02 Mar 20
  1. Totem (6:55)
  2. Totem (Swamp Crawl) (7:23)
  3. Totem (Hardway Brothers remix) (7:15)
  4. Totem (Otologic dub) (5:04)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kinfolk, but the broad-sweeping label with cosmic chuggery in its bones is back with this powerful dose from Ess O Ess and Saulrichards. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

  1. Cambodian Dream (8:07)
Review: In the space of a year Bahnsteig 23 has positioned itself as a label of note with a strong run of 12"s that draw on a rich spread of influences from cosmic disco to world music to provide a little more spice in your dancefloor selections. Portland's Elliot Thomas takes his Etbonz alias out for its first proper outing here after a split 7" with Dro Carey some years back. This single-sided jam serves to raise the intrigue around the project further still with its dense, organically enhanced production and dreamy atmosphere, keeping the tempo slow and simmering for the early part of the party.
