The Gift
The Gift (12")
Cat: LENG 065. Rel: 13 Jul 23
The Gift (40 Thieves Disco mix) (6:36)
The Gift (40 Thieves Disco dub) (7:38)
The Gift (40 Thieves beats) (4:26)
Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Lit Up (4:40)
Lit Up (The remix) (3:51)
Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

Enjoy Your Self EP 1
Cat: EESS 005. Rel: 21 Nov 22
Akira Arasawa - "Panorama New Touch" (6:33)
OR - "Hammock Beats" (4:15)
Ground & MAYUKo - "Liquidanz" (9:21)
Hutte Sound System - "Fire Fly" (4:54)
Review: Akira Arasawa opens up with psychedelic Balearic house on 'Panorama New Touch' while OR's 'Hammock Beats' is glitchy and low-slung downtempo. On the flip is the nine-minute head melter 'Liquidanz' with its rippling synth modulations and Hutte Sound System close down with the dreamy end of the night soother 'Fire Fly'. Thsi mproject sees Especial Specials joining forces ed up with Chillmountain Recordings - a label from Osaka, Japan - on a series of new EPs, this being the first of hopefully many. The idea is to show the world the talents the label has at its disposal. It's definitely a case of mission accomplished on this evidence.

Review: Mikal Asher, a scion of Jamaica's Morgan family dynasty, reunites with Chocolate Star Records here and does so with a collaboration with disco legend Gary Davis. Asher, akin to his brother Denroy Morgan, upholds the family's legacy of righteousness through music. Known as the Binghiman, he crafts captivating tunes with profound lyrics and has recorded in Ghana's Hustle Hard Studios and collaborated with industry pioneers in Kingston and Brooklyn, setting new standards in musical excellence along the way. Here, 'Wicked Ah Fi' transforms into a modern dub stepper, while 'Black Woman' offers a soulful, laid-back dedication to Davis' wife, Sonjia. That's A Steal #3

Beard In Dust & Arsenii - "Hey Hey" (6:45)
Arsenii - "Commando" (5:22)
Sputnik - "Bhangraman" (6:24)
Guido Minisky - "The Villain Edit" (5:09)
Review: With the Russia 2018 World Cup hurtling towards a thrilling conclusion, Moscow-based re-edit crew That's A Steal joins the global party in fine style. To kick things off, Beard in Dust and Arsenii join forces on "Hey Hey", a thrilling scalpel revision of a barely known, turn-of-the-80s Bollywood disco gem. Arseeni continues the Indian flavour via the slo-mo, Balearic reggae flex of "Commando", before Sputnik takes our breath away via the surging, Italo-disco-goes-East brilliance of "Bhangraman" - all throbbing arpeggio-style bass, foreboding chords and exotic synthesizer lines. A fine package is completed by the bonkers brilliance of Guido Minisky's "The Villain Edit", which sounds like Mumbai's answer to Art of Noise jamming with Herbie Hancock (circa "Rockit").

Bizzarro Universe - "Acid Sunday" (5:53)
Gumm - "Dance Of Fortune" (6:36)
Venice Arms - "Cuore Nero" (6:27)
C/TRO - "Allora" (6:18)
Review: Bordello a Parigi cordially invites us to enjoy a 'Buone Vacanze' ('happy holiday') in the first of a new series of multi-artist EPs packed full of sparkling, synth-heavy club cuts inspired by European electro-disco of the 1980s. Bizarro Universe steps up first with the thrusting sequenced bass, chiming melodies and bustling drum machine hits of revivalist Italo-disco number 'Acid Sunday', before GUMM opts for darker, sleazier, sequenced bass, bleeps reminiscent of the Flirts' 'Passion' and excitement-building breakdowns on 'Dance of Fortune'. Venice Arms doff a cap to both freestyle and the glossier end of dancefloor synth-pop on 'Cuore Nero', while 'Allore' by C/TRO is a more atmospheric, locked-in and pulsating slab of Bobby Orlando revivalism.

Peggi Blu - "I Want It All Now" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:59)
Gregg Diamond - "This Side Of Midnight" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:58)
Review: Celebrating 10 years since his seminal mix "Try To Find Me Vol 2" dropped and turned diggers and editors green with envy (before causing en-mass search and ID-request for all his obscurities), My Rules boss Justin Van Der Volgen has decided to unleash two of his special edits for a very limited time. Peggi Blu's "I Want It All Now" pops and tickles with its juicy slap bass before she takes the lead and sets fire to the mic with her smouldering vocals. On the B we find an edit of "This Side Of Midnight" where Gregg Diamond's vocals are brought right to the front of the mix and the disco feels are so strong you can tangibly feel them. Catch this is you can.

Review: It's a sizzling seven up for Moiss Music here as they draw together four different artists to offer up one cut each for this new various artists collection. Boogietraxx goes heavy on the filter vibes on 'S N T' which is French touch disco-house of the highest order. Kellit's 'Pryscoks Sockin Socks' is all about sultry sax lines and loose-limbed disco house beats while C Da Afro gets heads up with the streaming sunshine synths of 'Don't Be Quiet.' Groovemasta shut down with the funky Afro-disco stylings of 'Gonna Make U Rock.'

Review: The late great disco legend Patrick Adams is the man behind Cloud One and his last known recording was 'You Make Me Feel So Good' which was put out by Hattrick Innovations out of Sweden. That original has been sent over to Gary Davis - a long time friend of Adams - who then added his own unique stylings to it with some lush disco strings amongst other things. The stems of that version have now been sent to producer Knoe1 who flips it into two of his own new dubs which hare now served up here on a limited release in honour of the original artist. Two timeless and dubby disco gems worthy of inclusion in any proper collection.

Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. African Spirits (7:33)
New World Shuffle (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:50)
Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

"Sun Song" lives up to its name with wave after wave of heated musicianship from the belting harmonies to the light-touch keys. "Nigeria" taps deep into the source too as it drives us through the heart of Lagos with full horns and sweeping keys. Spiritual, sun-splashed and vital.

African Spirits (Andres extended remix) (5:33)
Review: Nicola Conte is one of the central figures in the Schema story, and his nu jazz and broken beat partnership with Gianluca Petrella has yielded some golden music in recent years. Nigeria originally came out in 2018, and then last year popped up on the duo's People Need People LP, but now it's getting a proper remix treatment which sees Tall Black Guy twisting the track out as a heady disco house roller for sundown moments when you need a little jazzy flair in the proceedings. That version comes in vocal and instrumental versions, and then the mighty Andres steps up for one of his simmering groove escapades as he delivers an extended remix of 'African Spirits'.

Free Your Mind (5:51)
Imani River (feat Bridgette Amofah) (4:58)
Infinity (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:28)
Review: Italian Latin jazz stalwart Nicola Conte first joined forces with trombonist Gianluca Petrella way back in 2001 on the nu-jazz era "New Standards" single. The pair started working on new material in 2014 and the "Free Your Mind EP" is their third joint release since. They're in a surprisingly up-beat, club-ready mood on EP opener "Free Your Mind", where Ebo Taylor style guitars, Africa 70 organs, tasty vocal samples and Afrobeat style horn lines are underpinned by a relaxed deep house groove. Vocalist Bridgette Amofah stars on the EP's other two cuts: the percussive tribal jazz of highlight "Imani River" and epic B-side "Infinity", a superb chunk of Afro-tinged deep house that sounds like it was inspired by Kai Alce and Ron Trent records.

Gerard Blanc - "Dis Tout Bas Dis" (remix club) (7:35)
Princesse Erika - "Calomnie" (club mix) (8:41)
Review: A La French 1987-1992 is a new series from long time dance veteran Dimitri From Paris. It finds him digging deep into his vaults and returning with some of his earlier edit work, often with a Balearic feel over deep house drums and 80s disco vibes. The first in the three part series is a real smoother, with sexy and steamy sax lines on 'Yuku Mon Ukulele' bringing a late night feel. There is a slow motion party tune from Alpha Blondy that runs deep, Gerard Blanc then gets a little more upbeat but still with plenty of soulful and loved up vocal vibes and Princesse Erika closes with lush piano stabs and synth strings that light up your heart.

Drrtyhaze - "Get Down To Your Body"
Mankind - "Marimba On Toast"
Pete Herbert & Golden Fleece - "Interstella"
Review: After countless releases stretching back to a debut drop from Greg Wilson back in 2006, the classy Redux imprint switch up tactics with the first in a series of various artist Pick & Mix EPs. It's a fine debut too, that stretches across the disco globe from Australia to New York via London. Proceedings commence with NYC duo Drrtyhaze, no strangers to Redux, who hog the A Side with the elongated disco house delight of "Get Down To Your Body". It is however overshadowed by the contribution from Mankind, last seen on 3rd Strike and claiming to be "beamed to Atlanta from a passing interstellar cruiser" and now seemingly residing in London. Taking on the same Alexander O Neal classic that was recently reworked to such devastating effect by Maxxi Soundsystem might seem foolish, but the Mankind treatment on "Marimba On Toast" swerves down some demented Maurice Fulton path and is totally different in execution. Finally, Pete Herbert teams up with Melbourne's Golden Fleece on the bumping slap bass odyssey "Inter Stella".

Gerald P J Browne - "Sexy Lady"
Review: The first Island Disco 12", released earlier in the Spring, was something of a must-have for those who like their funk, soul and disco served with a healthy dollop of tropical flavour. Predictably, this second installment in the bootleg series is similarly essential. There's some Clavinet-heavy disco-soul swing in the shape of Duke's superb "Is It Groovy Now", a thrillingly percussive, Hammond-heavy boogaloo workout from Tremille & The Jamals, a frankly bizarre - but brilliant - fusion of Cajan violins and disco rhythms from Shadow, and a certified disco banger from Gerald PJ Browne (the hustlin' brilliance of "Sexy Lady"). All Killer, no filler.

Get Down Edits - "Hey (Whats Happening)" (5:46)
Review: On this latest must-have missive, the Editorial crew has assembled an all-star cast of re-editors and house-loving disco rework merchants. Thrillingly, it contains a now rare outing from slo-mo specialist Duff Disco, whose atmospheric, beatdown style chugger "Always on My Mind" is undoubtedly one of the best things he's released in years. Props, too, to Irish disco-house specialists Get Down Edits, who weigh in with the warm and summery grooves of "Hey (What's Happening)". Elsewhere, Buzz Compass subtly beefs up and filters out a sleazy disco favourite on the constantly rising "U Deserve It", while Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee get the party started in their inimitable style via a touch of disco/hip-hop fusion ("Moonlite").

Right from the off, 'Kunama' strikes a perfect balance between horizontal grooves and gently persuasive Mediterranean rhythms. It's led by summery flutes which float up top over languid drums as the jumbled and organic perc helps smooth things along. 'Paradise Remembered' pairs more great win sounds with stringy melodies and chanting vocals that bring plenty of exotic vibes to this most humid and tropical of tracks.

Pasteur Lappe - "Na Real Sekele Fo' Ya" (Escapade edit) (5:59)
Review: Africa Seven's A7 Edits offshoot has already proved to be one of the better re-edit series around, primarily because they consistently employ some of the best re-editors in the business, offering them the opportunity to select tracks they want to rework from the parent label's vast catalogue of licensed cuts. This edition - the seventh EP to date - is another action-packed winner. Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. Gerideau, Jose Burgos, Taka Boom - "Bring It Back To Love" (Joey Negro mix) (6:09)
Review: This tidy collection of deep house remixes brings together a whole host of heavyweight names with some sunkissed vibes to get the outdoor party season started early. Cesaria Evora's "Nho" gets the treatment from none other than the mighty Kerri Chandler, who gives the Latin vibes a subtle bump and some sumptuous strings. DJ Spen and Karizma take things more straight up as they tackle Loverush's "Dancin", rolling out a silky smooth deep house version. Vincent Inc's "Walking On The Disco Street" appears in its original, heavy-funking form, and then Joey Negro's mix of "Bring It Back To Love" pushes into the upper reaches of peppy disco house with pattering bongos and gorgeous Rhodes keys aplenty underneath the life affirming vocal.

Review: PNP's first collection of sample-heavy disco-house reworks, released earlier in 2017, sold out in record time. It's likely that volume two won't hang around long, either. Predictably, it's packed with party-starting jams, from the cheeky R&B vocals, bumpin' beats and disco guitars of Slamb's "Needs", to the slinky, filter heavy soul-goes-deep house sweetness of Gut Instinct's impressive closer, "The Girl You Love". In between, DJ Swagger combines snappy, ghetto house style drums and R&B vocals on "I Don't Need Your Love", Turk Turtleton beefs up an '80s soul/boogie gem and Fedde LNG offers up a smooth and floor-friendly take on a much-loved disco-era sing-along.

The last one featured some awesome tracks by the likes of Kito Jempere and Carrot Green, but on Vol. II there's a Sunday open-air festival vibe. Golden Flamingo Orchestra - "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" (feat Margo Williams) (4:51)
Review: This essential 45 from Japan's Octave Lab brings together two essential productions from legendary disco studio wizard Patrick Adams. On the A-side you'll find Four Below Zero's 1976 modern soul scene anthem 'My Baby's Got E.S.P' (originally simply titled 'E.S.P', fact fans), a sing-along treat that arguably counts as one of Adams' most accessible and straight-forward productions (this is not a criticism, by the way, just recognition that he made some seriously bonkers disco and boogie records over the years). Over on the flip it's all about the Peter Brown co-produced 'The Guardian Angel is Watching Over Us', a rare 1979 cut that features a sublime lead vocal from Margo Williams. While not as celebratory as the A-side, it's every bit as essential.

F's Diss (4:34)

Review: Sir Funkineven's Apron label has been on the down low for the past few months, but it's a pure stealth move with this split 12" from the founder and the excellent Greg Beato the first of several killer records due over the coming months. In essence the pair take a side each with "F's Diss" from Funkineven channelling Soundstream levels of edit-shaped bliss whilst Miami's pocket dynamo Greg Beato slams through some blinding Hi NRG on "B's Diss". What exactly the originals are is quite secondary to how deadly they've become in the scalpels of this trans-Atlantic pair.

The Green Man
The Green Man (Capracara remix)
Dirk Bogarde
Review: Launched earlier this year after several successful years of East London parties, the Disco Bloodbath imprint are clearly set on a path to promote the musical talents that's been cultivating around them. This third release on the labels sees the lesser spotted G&S return with their first material since appearances on Dissident (RIP) and In Flagranti's Codek imprint back in 09. A collaborative project between Say Yes resident Nadia Ksaiba and Matt Waites of Call Super, Moscow and Nightmoves repute, the G&S sound is based around a weighty yet eminently danceable manipulation of analogue gear which is executed with aplomb on lead track "Green Man". The duo's predilection for disco is very much evident in the tonalities of this track, but it's blended with a tough 808 grit that will appeal to Dissident fans. Juno favourite Capracara appears on the B-Side with a flipping great remix of "Green Man" that expertly imbues some house buoyancy into proceedings without sacrificing any of the original's crystalline charms, while G&S finish off with the Bloodbath anthem in the making "Dirk Bogarde".

Flying Over The Island (5:45)
Review: G-Machine is having a nightmare and he wants you to have one, too. It's not your standard mare, mind. No naked in front of your school assembly business or suddenly realising you've still got exams to do, rather a deep cosmic dream galvanised by raw doses of funk thanks to a slippery slap bass that worms in and out of a hazy weave of synth and pads. "Flying Over The Island" on the B is no nightmare either; a breezy evocative slice of Balearica with infectious harmonic chimes, disco pops and dizzying layers of percussion... It's the perfect wake-up call from the sweetest of dreams. Once again the machine hits the G spot.

Review: Giovanni Damico returns to Bordello A Parigi with his first new cosmic adventures since his Primo Contatto LP debut in summer 2015. Once again, it's a rich warm brew underpinned with juicy synth bass runs and dense synth atmospheres as the Italian drives us deep into a sci-fi funk wonderland. Highlights include the faraway vocoder yearns and roboticised breathy rhythms of "Kraft", the blushing breaks and jittering staccato bass notes of "Funky Nation" and the star-gazing super-chugger "Flying Objects".

Review: British DJ and producer G Markus has appeared previously on some top imprints such as Soul Clap Records, Exploited, Roots for Bloom and Monologues in recent times - so he sure has the credentials. He strikes out on his own here for the fifth edition in his G Edits series. The A side features the classic Stateside vocal house vibe of "Lifted", while on the flip there's something more funky and lo-slung that you have come to expect from the man - on the deep down and disco dirty groove of "Panties".

Partee (6:24)
Review: The fourth volume in G Markus' ongoing G Edits series delivers some serious disco heat from start to finish. While many will enjoy the more relaxed, groovy and gently housed-up B-side, "Partee" - all walking bass, sun-kissed chord progressions, eyes-closed synth stabs, jangling guitars and soft focus blue-eyed soul vocals - it's A-side "Eternal" that undeniably hits home hardest. Heavier and sweatier with subtle deep house flourishes (think drawn-out chords and filter tricks), the edit is based on a Latin-fired disco workout that boasts spiraling orchestration, eyes-closed rock guitar solos and a big budget horn section.

Review: G. Markus returns with two fresh edits after his first G-Edits release sold out and enjoyed heavy support from all sorts of DJs. Known for his releases on Roots For Bloom, Sneaky and Monologues Records, the London based disco fiend has crafted a groovy house sound complete with vocal samples and funky bass lines. This year saw the launch of his aforementioned edits series and he's is back with the third installment. On the A side we have "Power" a killer edit that features funky vocal and guitar samples and a lot of bass courtesy of the heavy kick. On the flip, "Ichiban" might sound familiar - it's an oldie but a Goody Goody. G. Markus delivers a respectful edit of this classic.

Review: There can be few better ways to get your 2023 off to a banging start than by dropping this one onto your deck. Bordello A Parigi always deal in superb Italo disco sounds and this is another case in point - G Race's 'On Fire' surges out of the speakers on bright, buoyant melodies that zip about the skies with all the energy of a collapsing star. Sheet metal perfusion and corrugated rhythms all add to the power. A textured breakdown version is also included and so too an instrumental.

Review: Gino and Dino ride again! As with the previous G&D edit releases, the vibe is silky smooth, soulful and disco to its very core. "Changes" kickstarts the EP with a thumping disco piece that hits with northern soul energy while "Give Me Hot" has some of the most honied harmonies and peppiest sax you'll hear on wax this summer. Finally "Cosmic Factory" closes with the deep, spacey outer-planetary salute its name suggests. Watch out for those drums!

Review: G&D return to action with label EP number two. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the four tracks, from the grandiose orchestral disco swirl of "Something", to the Daniele Baldelli-esque throb of "Agua Cosmica", a killer version of a druggy Cosmic club favourite that boasts both heavy dub disco bass and mind-altering synthesizer arpeggio lines. Arguably the pick of the bunch, though, is heavy disco-funk stomping "Spider" with an edit from Volcov, a hearty, groove-based peak-time anthem rich in K.I.D style instrumentation, fantastic slap bass and righteous rock riffs.

Gnabolo (6:57)
Review: Bologna-based twosome G&B (apparently short for Gino and Dino) have offered up some of the best scalpel-style disco edits of recent times, with each of their three previous EPs receiving plaudits from both party-starting selectors and dusty-fingered record collectors. This fourth EP lives up to the high-quality of its predecessors, delivering three more hot-to-trot edits. The Italian pair begins via the triumphant disco-funk of 'Ori One', where rubbery bass, mazy electric piano solos, spacey synth chords and punchy horns catch the ear, before opening side B with a tidy revision of a boogie-era disco-soul gem ('Homecoming'). Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Gnabolo', a superbly squelchy revision of a killer Afro-boogie number from 1982.

Review: Nine years after volume one landed in stores, Italian twosome G&D return with a fifth instalment in their occasional edit series. This time they've got company, too. Fellow Italian producer LTJ contributes a brilliant EP-opening edit - the languid, disco-meets-jazz-funk shuffle of 'The Rain Machine', where elastic bass and electric piano solos catch the ear - while Star Creature signees First Touch provide a smoother, chunkier and more synth-heavy rework of the very same track on side B. G&D fill in the gaps, first tweaking a sweaty disco-funk jam ('Ziddy'), before reworking a surging, techno-tempo disco stomper (the wonderfully camp 'Gusto').

Review: 'Love & Hate In a Different Time', one of the Gabriels' sonically sweetest but most lyrically hard-hitting singles to date, may seem an unusual choice to remix, even if the 2020 release did feature a stomping groove reminiscent of Northern Soul. Greg Wilson and Che have done a great job in re-imagining it for dancefloors on their 'full length remix', though, wrapping the original's simmering swings and Jacob Lusk's incredible vocals - smothered in reverb and delay - around a rolling, 1970s style disco groove. The pair also a delivers an 'extended original mix', which stretches out Gabriels' 2020 single version for greater dancefloor pleasure, and a spine-tingling, effects-laden 'acapella' take. Simply essential.

Review: Phil South's Golf Channel has developed a fine relationship with Portuguese band Gala Drop over the years with the 2014 LP II the highlight of this union. Before the year is out, band and label reunite for Nova, a killer 12" which sees the band reworked by some of their talented compatriots. First up are Niagara, delivering their first ever remix after a year in which they've excelled on records for Principe, FTD, and their own Ascender label. In the trio's hands, "Nova" is granted the big band disco treatment, Lisbon-style, and it's nice to see how different their vibe is to the subsequent remix from Tiago. The Lux legend veers off into soulful broken beat house territory, channelling the vibes of old Bugz in the Attic and Kaidi Tatham material and we're loving it!

Review: Both Tough City Kids and Prins Thomas supply two mixes each for Galarude's "Cero", released through Prins Thomas and Kai Fraeger Internasjonal imprint, but originally on Japanese label Locarno Records almost 10 years ago. PT's trademark "Diskomiks" burrows down hard on a vamped bassline adding Balearic electronics to the fray, whereas his "Ambiens" mix, as the titles track suggests, is devoid of beats and the bassline from his "Diskomiks". The first mix by Tough City Kids (Gerd Jansen & Phillip Lauer) re-rubs the originals synths and simplifies the tracks busy drums, opting for a Human League kick-snare routine instead. Their second mix boils down things even further with a remix that could have easily been labelled "bonus beats".

Cero (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Second time round for Galarude's "Cero", which first appeared on Japan's Locarno Records way back in 2004. Produced by DJ Kent, Hiroshi Kawanabe and Noriyoshi Sassanuma (Sly Mongoose), the original version is a near perfect fusion of heavy tribal drums, beautiful tropical melodies and darting Balearic electronics. It may be nine years old, but it still sounds wonderfully fresh. That Prins Thomas has selected it for reissue is no surprise. This time round, there's also a bonus remix from hairy legend DJ Harvey. The reclusive party-starter shuffles the pack impressively, adding some snaking saxophone action on a version that delights in bringing out the original's most positive elements.

Review: The Royal Athlete label keeps on running with the sixth volume of its self-titled series. It is a collection, once again, of joyous analogue disco that pays homage to classic sounds but not slavishly so. Kicking things off are the mighty galaxies, absolute kings of this form with plenty of cosmic synths and retro-future synth work. Paul Withey slips into a deeper, more seductive disco-soul sound with 'Confessions' primed and ready for some smoochy dancing, then First Touch's 'I Believe In Boogie' does what it says on the tin. Sky Tony slows things down with the glossy and astral arps of 'Tell Me', making this a superb collection of disco gold.

This latest entry into the Sample Series kicks off with an edit of 'Lovely Is Today' by Eddie Harris from his 1968 album Plug Me In. It's steeped in delightfully conversational saxophone with rousing chords dancing beneath in a swinging 60s fashion. A real classy gem. On the flip, 'September 13' by Deodato gets reworked and is from his self-titled jazz-funk album. This one is more funky and it's led by some big, proud horn stabs and silky drum rumbles enriched with great synths. Another vital 45 from this fine label.

The Italian label has got a new VA EP arriving at the same time as this second volume of its African series. The second volume is another fresh one with an array of artists kicking off with Vincent Galgo who brings some raw percussive energy to 'J'ngolo'. Matalo!'s 'Zaire' gets more down and dirty with some rugged rhythms and Leslie Lello's 'Alcyone' has a joyous feel thanks to the big horns.
