Review: Brentford's finest pirate radio crew turned BBC sitcom stars have finally made it onto CD. For those familiar with the ebb and flow of their acclaimed People Just Do Nothing series, The Lost Tape is something of a treat. Presented as a non-step Korupt FM broadcast complete with Chabuddy G intro, skewed Steves mixing and rhymes from Grindah and DJ Beats, it's a memorable romp through the history of British garage and grime with a few exclusives and never-before-heard tracks thrown in. Stylistically, it's eerily reminiscent of many pirate radio mixtapes from back-in-the-day - which, of course, is the idea - but with the added bonus of laugh-out-loud moments amongst the scene anthems from Sunship, Wookie, DJ Zinc, Youngstar, Wiley, Dizzee and the boys themselves.

Review: Making their debut on Warp, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice proudly cross their beams to rain down a sick and slick kind of future-crunk, aptly demonstrated in in the introductory nature of bass-rich teaser "Top Floor" with its juke leanings and menacing posture. There's a detuned nature to the recognisable bleeps and wails on offer here while the beats remain crunchy and steadfast. "Higher Ground" is more overt in its use of juke to create a twisted kind of hype, while "Bugg'n" drips and drops in a loping vat of sub bass and slow-mo strangeness, leaving you with one of the oddest takes on the contemporary mess of electronic beats.

Review: Veteran grime star and rap giant Kano uses the hoodie as a symbolic crux throughout his sixth album. It's an item of clothing often associated with criminality and errant youths, but here he re-casts it as a form of protection for young black men who have a wide range of racial and societal pressures to deal with. It makes for a politically charged album with shiny electronica next to stark and prickly beats, melancholic pianos and minimal garage rhythms. A musically expansive work that crosses many styles and scenes, but remains united by Kano's ever impassioned deliveries.

Review: It may have arrived right at the very end of 2019, but it would be fair to say that Stormzy's much-trumpeted second album, "Heavy Is The Head", is one of the most significant releases of the year. Made with a gigantic cast list of producers and guest vocalists - Aitch, Burna Boy, Headie One, H.E.R, Tiana Major9, Yebba, Fred Gibson and MJ Cole included - the set includes some of his most thoughtful and incisive lyrics to date, as well as some particularly ear-catching mutations of grime that will further solidify his place as one of Britain's most important artists of the 21st century. Yes, it does include more nods towards pop music - he's a Glastonbury headliner after all - but the beats remain tough.

Review: Busting open a brand new bottle of 2019 with his bare Mancunian hands, Walton returns to Pinch's Tectonic with his first fresh dispatch since his sophomore album Black Lotus. As always, it's a full-bodied assault as "Bullet 2" licks shots with technoid venom. "Inside" follows with a similar spirit but with even less layers of armour and a bouncier bassline, while "More Cowbell" does that toxic Pulse X style alien bass thing, gets all trippy with the percussion and seriously stampy with the kicks. Finally, we close with a bruked up G swagger on the spacious, foreboding "Gunshot Clap". Shots fired.

Crossing The Line
Cat: TEC 109. Rel: 23 Oct 19
  1. Crossing The Line (4:37)
  2. Send Out (4:37)
Review: Given the beat-making and production talents of Bristol boys Pinch and Khan, this hook-up with grime MCs Killa's Army - Killa P, Irah and Long Range - was never going to fail. Even so, "Crossing The Line" is insanely good; a future club anthem in which the three MCs get the hype going over a weighty, fuzz-fuelled beat that sits somewhere between grime, dancehall and dubstep. Killa (sorry) stuff. Pinch and Khan ditch the MCs on B-side workout "Send Out", instead peppering a moody bassline, clandestine aural textures and ricocheting vocal samples with gunshot snares, gut-punching sub tones and panicked electronics.

MMM & Old Apparatus Meet Tshetsha Boys & Shangaan Electro
  1. MMM - "MMM Meets Tshetsha Boys" (7:08)
  2. Old Apparatus - "Old Apparatus Meets Shangaan Electro" (4:00)
Review: Honest Jon's present the last twelve inch instalment of their impossibly varied Shangaan Shake remix project with the perma excellent MMM and Old Apparatus at the helm. Fiedel and Wiegand's take on the Tshetsha Boys is notable for two things: firstly it continues the duo's recent fascination with rhythms of a decidedly UK Funky nature (as executed with devastating effect on their recent Dex/Rio 12") and it further strengthens the impression Honest Jon's have given the commissioned artists a blank canvas to retain or toss as many elements of the source material as they deem fit. Thus recognisable snippets of the vocals remain alongside a brilliantly twisted treatment of the tinny melodics wrapped infinitely around butt slapping drum textures. Completely different in tone and execution, the elusive Old Apparatus invoke the spirit of Scratch Perry at his most intoxicatingly brilliant with a rusted, half stepping arrangement caked in all manner of feedback which serves to demonstrate how far reaching the project has been over the course of the 12" releases.

  1. Don't Wanna Know (3:10)
  2. Predator Vs Prey (Toxin) (4:12)
  3. Photosynthesis (feat Tranq Sinatra) (3:19)
Review: Etch and Nico Lindsay make good musical bedfellows; the former's spacious left-footed soundscapes providing plenty of room for Nico's narrative, evolving lyrical style, they're kindred spirits linked by a glacial sense of adventure and refusal to compromise. Opener "Don't Wanna Know" kicks the doors down with force. Rough and switchy, there's a pulsing 2002 feel to both the step and flow while "Predator Vs Prey (Toxin)" takes us on a much swampier, weirded out trip that buns everything but survival. Finally, Tranq Sinatra joins the fray for an urgent finale where fast-tongue tales from Nico are backed from Tranq harmonies and another iced riddim from Etch. Cold.

Review: YES! We'd been waiting on this collaboration from UK start vocalist Wiley and shadowy electronic pioneer Zomby for a long time now, and it's about time it's landed on our shelves. "Step 2001" is a straight-up grime piece, a clicking, twisted groove made up of darting hi-hats and pacman sounds; you know when they say "they don't make them like they used to!"? Well, this doesn't apply here, as it's a serious head-dive back into the early noughties scene. There's also an instrumental version for maximum damage.

Review: Juicy jams galore: ZHA's White Peach return with their sixth "Bits" instalment where Peach pals old and new collide with their freshest, most vitamin-enriched cuts. First up label newcomers Neffa-T and Patrick Brian get rowdy with a space-aged grime stepper "Sabertooth". All staccato fire and rubber-ball bass it sets the tone for Gundam & Jook's grimey snare-smacking hybrid "Tactical Espionage" and some obese bass ripples from Modelle, who was last spotted on the label earlier this year with the awesome "Paladins" EP. Finally ZHA makes a rare appearance with the wonked out melter "Running VIP". Yum.

Review: Three years on from his last album, Skepta's profile has never been higher. Whereas he was once an underground hero railing against anti-grime sentiments and the misunderstanding of his art, he's now an international star with a string of guest spots on gargantuan US hip-hop hits to his name. Expectancy is high, then, for "Ignorance Is Bliss". Happily, we can confirm it's another strong set. His lyrics continue to bristle with intensity, while his flow and vocal delivery remain as distinctive as ever. As for the beats, they're heavy and punchy, variously doffing a cap to chart-bothering hip-hop, sleazy trip and distorted, sub-heavy grime. In other words, he may be a star, but Skepta's records remain as real as ever.

Review: Let the "Games" begin! MOREOFUS returns to juice us up with his long-awaited return on White Peach. Four future-focused instrumentals, all brittle, bruising and abstract, if you were lucky to be at Outlook this year then you'll know all about these ones. "Games" takes the lead with a broken glass riff that's comprised of multiple lines all Q&Aing each in quick back-chat mode. "Runnin'" continues the chaos with a trip through a maze of eastern flutes and pipes while "Thieves" gives us a breather with a deeper vibe and a bassline that sounds like it came from 2007. Finally "Do You Know" closes with another uncompromising sound palette. Cold-yet-dramatic and set somewhere far far in the future. Game over.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: It's time to step into the Bristol shadows with Sector 7 once again as label co-runner Boofy invites Young Echo to the fray for two instrumental grime / dub hybrids. "Roll The Dice" pelvises with its dense subs and shimmering atmospheric textures while shattering trap snare roll and a mystic melody and skippy drum arrangement flicker in and out of the foreground. "Cane Sword" is a little more on the pure grime tip with some superb drum momentum, breathless atmospheres and cool samples that skid to a halt when you least expect them. Roll again...

Stark staccato strings, booming bass and spacious beats; this is pure Bristol Psycho business and it's backed by another west country horror Boofy on the remix. Chopping up the original within an inch of its life, he adds a little ghetto-twist in the beats for added murderation. Heavy.

"Too Much Tuna" is the sound of satiation, all woozy and satisfied with dreamy arpeggios, otherworldly clicks and pops and a gentle but stern bassline heartbeat. Dig deeper into the feast for a wonked out tripletty chat with little green men on "Martians", a bleepy bewilderment on the strange slides and glides of "Reptoid" and an unapologetic kick in the circuits with the grunting, frazzled "Computer Takeover". Review: Last year, Dream Eater Records offered up a "versus" release boasting weighty and intoxicating cuts from both Kromestar and Ironsoul. It was something of a success, so they've decided to repeat the exercise. Kromestar handles side A, wrapping fuzzy, grime style beats and pulverizing bass in fluttering flutes, heady synth strings and dreamy chords. Ironsoul takes a totally different approach on flipside cut "Temper", an off-kilter chunk of wonky dubstep/grime fusion full of buzzing, echoing riffs, mind-altering electronics and sub-bass pressure. It's rhythmically curious, but that's undoubtedly part of the track's seductive late-night allure.

It's one to amp a crowd, lock them in a loop and send them utterly wild. Review: Professor Nomine unleashes the third instalment of his new label and he's rolling in good company as Macabre Unit and Japanese grime MC Duff join him for the late night ride. Nomine's rhythms buzz with rolling energy - the electric waspy bass on "Grimy Tribe", the tripped reverse beats of "Game Over", the stark vocal rhythm of Duff on "World Of G". Macabre Unit takes us deeper into the swamp with the palpitating kicks of "Sound Boy" before getting all space-funk on "Red Stripe Riddim" and totally flipping the script on the squelched out bass twists of "Neurotik". 6. In Tha Trap (5:38)
Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

Stop Flapping Your Gums Vol 2
Cat: HTS 003. Rel: 25 Feb 20
  1. Jaws (3:16)
  2. Border Clash (3:44)
Review: Basic Rhythm alter ego East Man returns to his Hi Tek imprint with his second anti gum-flapping manifesto. Rough, sludgy, oppressive; "Jaws" is a stripped back to the bulbous bare essentials. Just a warm 808 bass/kick and snare hits, weaving and bobbing with heavy hypnosis. Flip for "Border Clash" where strange bee's nest textures buzz between the bass hits and shattered percussive hits. Paranoid, confusing, heavy. Dark times inspire dark tunes.

  3. Netz Room (J Tijn remix) (4:25)
  4. Netz Room (Munstac remix) (6:14)
Review: Following last year's chest-pressing debut album A Music Of Sound Systems, Infrasonics scientist Spatial returns to Never Ready with two blistering originals that flex around the broken and 4/4 axis. "Netz Room" is sprung with a fractured grime aesthetic to the rhythm. Icy with just the right amount of drama, this causes commotions in all scenarios. "Hut 6" reminds us of Spatial's technoid mindset with a carefully sculpted deep hypnotic groove. Remix-wise J Tijn gets all fuzzy and broken while Munstac strips things right back and dusts off with a little timpani magic. Singular.

Cat: DEV 002. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Bells (RPG mix) (3:46)
Review: The ZX gunman returns! Here we find him filling in his signature space with vivid colours; Oriental scales cascade mesmerizingly across a series of synth textures, melodies and counter melodies while a stern bass hums with heavy voltage beneath. Kickless but kicking, it's another singular shot from the London shooter.
