Peach Bits Vol 6
  1. Neffa-T & Patrick Brian - "Sabertooth" (3:42)
  2. Gundam & Jook - "Tactical Espionage" (3:49)
  3. Modelle - "Sho Sho" (3:30)
  4. Zha - "Running VIP" (4:12)
Review: Juicy jams galore: ZHA's White Peach return with their sixth "Bits" instalment where Peach pals old and new collide with their freshest, most vitamin-enriched cuts. First up label newcomers Neffa-T and Patrick Brian get rowdy with a space-aged grime stepper "Sabertooth". All staccato fire and rubber-ball bass it sets the tone for Gundam & Jook's grimey snare-smacking hybrid "Tactical Espionage" and some obese bass ripples from Modelle, who was last spotted on the label earlier this year with the awesome "Paladins" EP. Finally ZHA makes a rare appearance with the wonked out melter "Running VIP". Yum.

Review: Three years on from his last album, Skepta's profile has never been higher. Whereas he was once an underground hero railing against anti-grime sentiments and the misunderstanding of his art, he's now an international star with a string of guest spots on gargantuan US hip-hop hits to his name. Expectancy is high, then, for "Ignorance Is Bliss". Happily, we can confirm it's another strong set. His lyrics continue to bristle with intensity, while his flow and vocal delivery remain as distinctive as ever. As for the beats, they're heavy and punchy, variously doffing a cap to chart-bothering hip-hop, sleazy trip and distorted, sub-heavy grime. In other words, he may be a star, but Skepta's records remain as real as ever.

Cat: WPR 044. Rel: 15 Oct 19
  1. Games (5:21)
  2. Runnin' (4:58)
  3. Thieves (5:16)
  4. Do You Know (5:56)
Review: Let the "Games" begin! MOREOFUS returns to juice us up with his long-awaited return on White Peach. Four future-focused instrumentals, all brittle, bruising and abstract, if you were lucky to be at Outlook this year then you'll know all about these ones. "Games" takes the lead with a broken glass riff that's comprised of multiple lines all Q&Aing each in quick back-chat mode. "Runnin'" continues the chaos with a trip through a maze of eastern flutes and pipes while "Thieves" gives us a breather with a deeper vibe and a bassline that sounds like it came from 2007. Finally "Do You Know" closes with another uncompromising sound palette. Cold-yet-dramatic and set somewhere far far in the future. Game over.

Review: Forget the Wiley / Stormzy beef; Jme's move to strictly release his first album in four years on hard formats was one of the fiercest statements in recent grime years. It's already sold out on CD now here comes the vinyl and, as you can see, this isn't a diluted down vinyl-version either: all 18 tracks are present on this double LP. And all 18 tracks are sounding extra fat on wax. Arguably his best album to date, Jme's bars, messages, yarns and jokes cover everything from Star Wars to veganism with confidence, humour and a flow that no other MC can touch. Featuring the likes of his brother Skepta, Giggs, Wiley, P Money and beats from the likes of Preditah, Tre Mission, Deeco and Jme himself, this album hits the spot with class.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: Modern Love's newest release comes from British beatmaker Zomby, who has reached into his archives to unearth a long lost album nearly a decade after its completion. Said to be recorded between two weeks around 2008-2009, the Mercury's Rainbow LP sees the London based producer interpreting grime innovator Wiley's Eskibeat productions, which played an instrumental role in the genre's formation. It features the 4AD/Hyperdub affiliated artist utilising intricately hand-programmed arpeggios, 'sliding Triton squares' and post-garage drum patterns. On a conceptual level, it uses theories of colour and its relation to the sonic chromatic spectrum - the circle of fifths.

Review: Get out of the shower scene and onto our decks. Drone follows up his Circadian Rhythms release with a ruthless jam that's straight out of the Norman Bates guidebook to life. Stark staccato strings, booming bass and spacious beats; this is pure Bristol Psycho business and it's backed by another west country horror Boofy on the remix. Chopping up the original within an inch of its life, he adds a little ghetto-twist in the beats for added murderation. Heavy.

Review: Ol' Pushy's getting freaky on the Omega 3 oils again. "Too Much Tuna" is the sound of satiation, all woozy and satisfied with dreamy arpeggios, otherworldly clicks and pops and a gentle but stern bassline heartbeat. Dig deeper into the feast for a wonked out tripletty chat with little green men on "Martians", a bleepy bewilderment on the strange slides and glides of "Reptoid" and an unapologetic kick in the circuits with the grunting, frazzled "Computer Takeover". Turn on, tuna in, do not drop out.

DREAMEATER 009
Cat: DREAMEATER 009. Rel: 21 Aug 19
  1. Kromestar - "Karma" (4:41)
  2. Ironsoul - "Temper" (4:12)
Review: Last year, Dream Eater Records offered up a "versus" release boasting weighty and intoxicating cuts from both Kromestar and Ironsoul. It was something of a success, so they've decided to repeat the exercise. Kromestar handles side A, wrapping fuzzy, grime style beats and pulverizing bass in fluttering flutes, heady synth strings and dreamy chords. Ironsoul takes a totally different approach on flipside cut "Temper", an off-kilter chunk of wonky dubstep/grime fusion full of buzzing, echoing riffs, mind-altering electronics and sub-bass pressure. It's rhythmically curious, but that's undoubtedly part of the track's seductive late-night allure.

  4. Trancer (3:25)
Review: Back in the early years of grime, Mega Mos Wanted (or Mos Wanted as he was more regularly known) was an in-demand beat-maker whose rhythm tracks underpinned the songs of Wiley and Dizzee Rascal. As this rare solo outing on Dream Eater proves, he's still capable of serving up killer beats. These are a little more heavily electronic and colourful than some of his works, but the beats and basslines remain tough and punchy. We're particularly enjoying the rolling electronic sleaze that is "Blip Works" and the fizzing, polyrhythmic brilliance of "UK Drama (Remix)", but the whole EP is impressively strong.

  6. Macabre Unit - "Neurotik" (3:45)
Review: Professor Nomine unleashes the third instalment of his new label and he's rolling in good company as Macabre Unit and Japanese grime MC Duff join him for the late night ride. Nomine's rhythms buzz with rolling energy - the electric waspy bass on "Grimy Tribe", the tripped reverse beats of "Game Over", the stark vocal rhythm of Duff on "World Of G". Macabre Unit takes us deeper into the swamp with the palpitating kicks of "Sound Boy" before getting all space-funk on "Red Stripe Riddim" and totally flipping the script on the squelched out bass twists of "Neurotik". Some truly futuristic stuff happening here...

  1. Haunted Joyride (5:31)
  2. General Riddim (3:46)
Review: Spooky Bizzle couldn't be more aptly named: "Haunted Joyride" is a restless dubstep cut with hammering drums and lithe synths all manner of unsettling samples and weird sound sources. It's one to amp a crowd, lock them in a loop and send them utterly wild. "General Riddim" completely flips the script with a swaggering reggae groove that is sun kissed and laid back, perfect for outdoor parties and Sunday BBQs. Add in the fact this comes on a tasty green 10" and you have a platter that really matters.

Cat: OILGANG 014. Rel: 04 Nov 16
  1. Low Rider (3:47)
  2. All Black Winter (4:40)
Review: Deep grime instrumentals; few labels are doing it like Oil Gang. The clue's in the title - the tight-knit London crew are dealing strictly in sinister, seeping, dark, slick sounds. This one's even darker than usual as Spooky drops the aggro and goes straight in with the deep dagger dynamics. All stealth-like and creepy, "Low Rider" isn't a track you want on your headphones walking home through the wrong postcode at night. Boylan ups the energy with a stampier twist the rhythm and a dramatic riff croaking from the humanized bass tones. Badness.

Review: Schockglatze is a long standing collaboration between artists working across several disciplines. With audio-visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions thus far, they have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds. Spank has already collaborated with a range of acclaimed vocalists, including Warrior Queen, Sensational and Christoph Waltz. As a competent producer, he forms the solid basis for the studio productions of Schockglatze. Nik Nowak has attracted international attention with his mobile sound sculptures and worked with Chicago footwork pioneers like (the late) DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn as well as Kevin Martin aka The Bug. Graphic artist, VJ and video director Moritz Stumm aka Ultramoodem brings to the project an 'inimitable rhythmicity' while creating a singular technique of audio-visual effects: the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of the collective.

Review: Ooof. Denver darksmith Dalek One lashes out with more savage magic, this time on St Louis collective Dub Sector. The EP kicks off with "Can't Walk", a raw fusion of swaggering beats, cannon ball bass hits and sudden flurries of amenistic breaks that fly by before you even realise. "Skincrawler" follows but with even more edge and coldness. Pranged out, trippy and cold to the bone, it lives up to its name in every way. Finally, Dalek teams up with Max Mischief for the closing farewell "Sicim". Icy, haunted and laced with chilling guitar loops, things suddenly take a turn for the strange as the warped basses weep into the mix. Powerful; no one does it quite like Dalek.

Jam lays down a bouncy riddim full of character and cheeky trippy flurries while Capo gets down to business with a tale of a hectic schedule. Flip for an even spicier dish as the instrumental neck-snapper "Kumasi". Robotic, squelchy, bashy. It's the perfect side for the main banquet. Black card business.

Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

Review: Boom: just days after his recent Oil Gang outing, the mighty D.O.K makes his debut on Mean Streets with some absolutely savage sounds that have already been doing the business this year. "Shine" is pure orchestra damagement while "Annihilate The World" lives up to its name with frank and disarming warp tactics. Flip for the steppier, Psycho-string-stab riffing "Frightening" and the more classic 2007 style 140 grumbler. One of grime's truest voices right here.

Review: Harnessing the energy of this perpetual season of discontent, Broken Note returns with his first album in 10 years, and it's every bit as politically charged, brutal and challenging as you'd hope it would be. No track fits neatly in any genre parameters, there's no light at the end of any tunnels; this is the mood and tone to fit the time; the dramatic tension of opener "The Nothing", the maniacal squat party techno stampede of "Suspect Device", the neuro bulldozer glitches and grizzles of "Parabolic Hex", the AK47 kicks and shrapnel bass of "Cold Sweat"... and these are just a few examples of the terrifying tableaus Tommy Broken has created here. Powerful, physical and perfect for those rare rave moments we forget everything.

Stop Flapping Your Gums Vol 2

  1. Jaws (3:16)
  2. Border Clash (3:44)
Review: Basic Rhythm alter ego East Man returns to his Hi Tek imprint with his second anti gum-flapping manifesto. Rough, sludgy, oppressive; "Jaws" is a stripped back to the bulbous bare essentials. Just a warm 808 bass/kick and snare hits, weaving and bobbing with heavy hypnosis. Flip for "Border Clash" where strange bee's nest textures buzz between the bass hits and shattered percussive hits. Paranoid, confusing, heavy. Dark times inspire dark tunes.

  4. Netz Room (Munstac remix) (6:14)
Review: Following last year's chest-pressing debut album A Music Of Sound Systems, Infrasonics scientist Spatial returns to Never Ready with two blistering originals that flex around the broken and 4/4 axis. "Netz Room" is sprung with a fractured grime aesthetic to the rhythm. Icy with just the right amount of drama, this causes commotions in all scenarios. "Hut 6" reminds us of Spatial's technoid mindset with a carefully sculpted deep hypnotic groove. Remix-wise J Tijn gets all fuzzy and broken while Munstac strips things right back and dusts off with a little timpani magic. Singular.
