Orders (12")
Cat: SEN 014. Rel: 01 Jul 20
  1. Boylan & Logos - "Orders" (4:13)
  2. Boylan, Slimzee & USF - "The Mould" (4:40)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Boylan landed on Youngsta's Sentry. A master of dark subby funk, usually found more around the grime and breaks corners, his sound has always lent itself to the more traditional dubstep vibe. As proved by these two savage collaborations. "Orders" sees him teaming up with old mate Logos for a hammering halftime vibe that pays respect to the traditions but does with a slight techno twist. Flip for "The Mould" where the breaks come out in full force. A proper swinging jam with wild drums and an elasticated bassline, there's nice nod to the turn of the century dark garage and early Bingo feel as we're pushed and shunted into bassy parts unknown. Sentry just keep on smashing it.

Cat: WYCH 004. Rel: 28 Aug 20
  1. Keygen (3:29)
  2. Anatolian Heartland (4:19)
  3. Anatolian Heartland (K Lone remix) (3:45)
Review: Fresh from his White Peach sorcery earlier this year, Bristol's Hiss steps up to K-Lone's slowly blossoming label Wych. An imprint who we're lucky to enjoy one release per year from, every time they do put something into the world it's always worth checking. "Keygen" is no exception. A poignant, emotional tale of product licencing keys told through barbed soul 80s synth funk motifs, this treads the line between G and S.A.D with finesse. "Anatolian Heartland" continues the sombre, reflective atmosphere but with a darker, wave-style twist as soft pads, as smoking 808 kicks and an eastern scale arpeggio turn you inside out. Finally label boss K-Lone ups the twinkle factor on "Anatolian Heartland" for a fittingly beautiful finale. Good knight.

Mourner VIP
Cat: FPL 023. Rel: 10 Nov 20
  1. Mourner VIP (4:15)
  2. Voynich (5:09)
Review: Now this is what you call a VIP. Released at long last, six years after the original, Sorrow's melancholic original is given a boost with slinky two-steps without losing any of its poignancy or emotion. Flip for 'Voynich', a brand new track from the Bristol producer that hits with an instrumental grime punch but swaggers with a moody 2008-flavoured dubstep bassline. A little more dancefloor than you'd expect from Fent Plates but we'd expect nothing less from a label that's kept us on our toes for the last 10 years.

Trilogy Vol 1
Cat: MSR 015. Rel: 21 Jul 20
  1. Trends & P Jam - "Truth Or Die" (3:45)
  2. Silas - "Mirage" (3:45)
Review: Savage instrumental grime, cooked up in the gully way we've come to expect from Mean Streets. "Truth Or Die" raises the party game stakes for those who want to put their 2020 where their mouth is. Neck snap breaks and grunting bass, it's Trends and P Jam doing what they do best. Silas provides the tonic; "Mirage" is a swaggering slab of dubstep / 140 gold. Fans of that classic spacious Medi-style stuff from the late 2000s will be all over this. Looking forward to the second volume.

Review: Three years on from his last album, Skepta's profile has never been higher. Whereas he was once an underground hero railing against anti-grime sentiments and the misunderstanding of his art, he's now an international star with a string of guest spots on gargantuan US hip-hop hits to his name. Expectancy is high, then, for "Ignorance Is Bliss". Happily, we can confirm it's another strong set. His lyrics continue to bristle with intensity, while his flow and vocal delivery remain as distinctive as ever. As for the beats, they're heavy and punchy, variously doffing a cap to chart-bothering hip-hop, sleazy trip and distorted, sub-heavy grime. In other words, he may be a star, but Skepta's records remain as real as ever.
