No Way Back
No Way Back (red vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: TX 112RED. Rel: 01 Jan 90
  1. No Way Back (vocal mix) (5:02)
  2. No Way Back (instrumental mix) (4:57)
Review: In a recent online poll hosted by acid evangelist Posthuman, Adonis's "No Way Back" was voted the greatest acid house track of all time. It's hard to argue - though we'd have opted for Phuture's pioneering "Acid Trax" - as the Chicago classic sounds every bit as fresh, futuristic and otherworldly now as it did when it was first released in 1986. This tasty red vinyl reissue from TRAX pairs the much-loved vocal version - in which the late, great Gary B talks about losing control over fiendishly sweaty, ultra-jacking drums and one of the sleaziest, most addictive acid basslines of all time - with the lesser-celebrated, but equally heavy, instrumental mix. If you don't already own a copy, don't sleep.

CCCP Edits 2

  1. Nochi (6:50)
  2. Ne Mojet Bit (6:22)
  3. T=H2O (6:57)
  4. Hare Krishna (4:14)
Review: We were rather impressed by the first volume in the CCCP Edits series, a re-edit imprint seemingly dedicated to offering up reworks of obscure, largely unknown musical gems from Soviet-era Russia, so hopes are sky-high for this second instalment. We shouldn't have worried. Opener "Nochi" is a deep, woozy and off-kilter chunk of two-step garage/jazz-funk fusion, while "Ne Mojet Bit" is the most Balearic electro track we've heard in yonks. The fun continues on the flip, where the glassy-eyed deep pop-goes-two-step flex of "T=H2O" comes accompanied with the hip-house era breakbeat-house warmth (and jazzy keys) of standout track "Hare, Krishna".

MOXY EDITS 001 (hand-stamped 1-sided 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: MYEDITS 001. Rel: 11 Mar 20
  1. Track 1 (6:30)
Review: Another week, another new re-edit series of mysterious origin. There's literally no info about the producer (or producers) behind this particular single-sided salvo, or the source material they've tampered with. Regardless, we'd heartily recommend giving it a listen. Firmly focused on peak-time floors, it wraps cut-up and manipulated female rap vocals over a formidably bouncy, turn-of-the-90s house beat and a rubbery synthesizer bassline so infectious you might need to self-isolate for two weeks after hearing it. This is hip-shaking, toe-tapping, arms-flailing retro-futurist hip-house at its very best: ignore at your peril!

  2. Your Ass, My Camel Blue (7:11)
  3. Love In Plexiglass (7:50)
  4. Amor Ante Hominem Nascitur (6:26)
Review: To launch their new collaborative imprint Locus, Enzo Siragusa and FUSE have turned to Italian rising star (and INFUSE regular) Koko. The resultant four-tracker ix attractive and ear-catching, with Koko moving from hip-shaking summery deep house swing (the rather lovely chord progressions and drowsy female vocals of "Chantal", featuring Quelle Rox), to the UK garage-goes-deep house warmth of "Amor Ante Hominem Nascitur", via slick smoothness of "Your Ass, My Camel Blue" and the tough, bumpin' chunkiness of revivalist UK garage number "Love In Plexiglass". It's the latter, a pitch-perfect cap-doff to Grant Nelson rich in jazzy bass and dreamy vocal snippets, that hits home hardest.

  3. Get Over U (Mr Director's 'Feels Good' dub) (9:04)
  4. Get Over U (Director's cut mix - Sami Dee edit) (6:15)
Review: SoSure Music have re-released Director's Cut's 2012 funky house anthem "Can't Get Over U" with a couple of modern reshapes for modern dance floors. The duo was comprised of 'Godfather of house music' Frankie Knuckles with veteran producer Eric Kupper. Berlin's Chambray (REKIDS/&Friends/Dirtybird) injects a bouncy lo-fi shuffle into his rework, while industry legend Tedd Patterson keeps that classic vibe alive - like only he can - on his version. On the flip, we have Frankie's own 'Mr Director's 'Feels Good' Dub' (a vinyl exclusive) of which Frenchman Sami Dee serves up a brilliant edit as well.

Now That I Got To Know You
Reggie HALL feat GU aka CVO
Cat: SJ U12R30. Rel: 25 Jun 20
  1. Now That I Got To Know You (8:57)
  2. Now That I Got To Know You (instrumental dub) (8:22)
Review: The honeyed, effortlessly soulful vocals of Reggie Hall have been a feature of Chicago house since the late 1980s, when he appeared on a Dance Mania release by Victor Romeo. He's released plenty of music since then, though this hook-up with Glenn Underground - who produced the music - and fellow house veteran Byron Stingily (who provided backing vocals) is still his first outing for almost 12 years. The A-side full vocal version is simply superb, with Hall's superb, impassioned, gospel-inspired vocals riding a bouncy, Osunlade style groove, jazzy guitars, sustained church organ chords and all manner of intricate musical details. Glenn Underground dons the CVO alias to deliver a slightly tougher, more groove-driven B-side "Dub" that nevertheless includes plenty of sun-bright musical warmth.

Attack The Dancefloor Vol 16
  1. Akabu - "Ride The Storm" (feat Linda Clifford - Saison remix) (7:21)
  2. The Love Symphony Orchestra - "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" (Dr Packer remix) (7:31)
  3. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Everyday" (JN Disco Re-Bump remix) (7:28)
  4. Art Of Tones - "Flower Child" (feat Anduze) (7:01)
Review: Like its numerous predecessors, 16th edition of Z Records' long running "Attack The Dancefloor" series is packed to the rafters with tried and tested dancefloor treats, most of which have never appeared on vinyl before. First up, Saison tackles Akabu's 2001 classic "Ride The Storm", turning it into a deep, bouncy and rubbery chunk of lilting, string-drenched house goodness, before Dr Packer delivers a subtly tooled-up take on The Love Symphony Orchestra's grandiose and sexually-charged 1978 disco classic "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". Label head honcho Joey Negro provides a superb deep disco rework of one of his own productions, the Sunburst Band's 2004 summer sing-along "Everyday", while Art of Tones' "Flower Child" is a flash-fried, disco-funk romp laden with superb lead vocals from Anduze.

Review: Montreal-based Quebecois musician Priori is a DJ and live act as well as a studio wizard. He plays bring smooth and hypnotic sounds to his work and this tasteful debut on Dust World is another case in point. "Scn 1" works you into a lather with its warm, steamy chords racing over clipped and kinetic drums. "Scn 2" dips into hyper speed dub techno minimalism that leaves you in a trance and "Scn 3" then pulls back to a more cavernous and meandering dub house groove filled with atmospheric pads. "Scn 4" closes out with some of that impeccable Basic Channel lushness to leave you utterly relaxed.

24/7 Love Affair (VIP Edition)
Cat: LT 104. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Niederbeat Gospel Dub (9:34)
  2. Feelin' Good (version) (5:01)
Review: Last year Local Talk offered up Soulphiction's latest album (his first for almost ten years) over three separate slabs of wax. Here they complete the package via a "VIP Edition" 12" single featuring a brand new cut and a previously unheard revision of album highlight "Feelin' Good". The simply titled "Version" mix of that on the flip is delicious, with the Philpot founder layering expansive piano motifs and dizzying solos over skippy, U.S garage-influenced beats and a warm, toasty bassline. Arguably even better though is the fresh cut, "Niederbeat Gospel (Dub)". Living up to its title, the track is a thickset chunk of bluesy gospel house dustiness built around swinging beats, beefy bass and layered vocal samples from a crackly old gospel recording.

Review: It's early days for Meftah, who you may have spotted remixing Amp Fiddler on Mahogani Music alongside Jahn Cloud, but this low key 12" highlights him as a serious talent to keep tabs on in the Detroit music community. There's no hiding his musical roots and influences, as dusty keys, live bass and loose, expressive percussion intertwine in a mellow, bluesy haze. This is cut from the same cloth as Kenny Dixon Jr, Theo Parrish, Jay Daniel and scores of others, but Meftah has his own mellow mood to impart on these five addictive, seductive trips through deepest jazz-inflected house.

Review: Ron Trent has long been an archetypal deep house producer, no matter what alias he assumes. Here he becomes RT Factor on the Electric blue label. Of course, it is another high class and timeless offering that features just one epic 15 minute deep house journey. All the usual traits are present and correct - supple and rubbery drums, spiritual chords and majestic key playing that all effortlessly drift in and out of the mix to make for something smooth flowing and compelling throughout. All these years after starting out and re-writing the rules, Trent is still the man to beat at this deep house game.

  3. Blood Moon (Dawl & Sween Tone DropOut remix) (7:17)
  4. Blood Moon (Violet remix) (5:56)
Review: Kim Ann Foxman takes a break from her own Self:Timer label to pop up on [Emotional] Especial. Her track "Blood Moon" hinges around rolling breaks and a globular monosynth bassline, but it's Foxman's vocals that give the track an electric, mystical energy that will cast a spell over the dance. Roza Terenzi takes the original and jacks it up, sharpening the focus of the rhythm section without losing the crunchy breaks. Dawl and Sween channel some bleeps n' breaks vibes of their own with a version that keeps things darkside and wiggy for the old-skool crew. Rounding things off, Violet's remix emphasises the acid as it plunges into the depths of the dungeon in a hooky, hard-edged style.

Cat: LHR 22. Rel: 15 Jun 20
  1. Ballets
  2. Kefta
  3. Ballets (Lizz remix)
Review: Here comes something fresh for your ears on Lazare Hoche. The Parisian minimal house bastion is experiementing on this release, as Alex Font collaborates with Nils Weimann for a record that explores the synergy between classical minimalism and contemporary dancefloor reductionism. "Ballets" is a striking track that gets creative with violin strikes falling in polyrhythmic patterns to create something truly bewildering for the dancefloor - after all, that experimental sphere is where the magic happens. "Kefta" takes a more traditional approach to minimal tech house, executed in a classy, understated fashion. On the flip, Lizz comes on board for a remix of "Ballets" that places the emphasis back on the beats.

Review: As debuts go, the first outing from Ben Westbeech and KON as The Vision is mighty impressive. With the assistance of UK soul star Andreya Triana, they've conjured up a thrilling debut cut that sits somewhere between gospel, disco and sultry soulful house. The superbly warm and groovy original version - all bold piano riffs, jazzy horn solos, crunchy guitars, rolling drums and sublime lead vocals - is undoubtedly the standout, though the accompanying remixes are also rather good. Mousse T's boogie-flavoured house remix is a great alternative house mix with a deeper and more obviously electronic flavour, while the two Nightmares On Wax rubs are chunkier, sweatier and even warmer with plenty of D-Train style synth squiggles and ear-catching musical flourishes. In a word: ace.

Review: It was fairly quiet on the release front for Brooklyn's Parang Recordings last year, but they finally kickstart 2020 with a bang, proudly presenting their first various artists compilation EP, featuring both emerging and established talents with a range of sounds from diverse backgrounds. On the A side of the Snowbirds EP we have a couple of ascendant producers the from the rather fertile scene of Offenbach am Main: Lil Sorry's "High Noon'' is a bleeped-out retro techno bonanza treads the same sonic path as local outfits like Traffic and Pager. Speaking of the latter, the next track's sunny and evocative deep house groove (Lord Of Leisur's "Coffee 'N' Chups) is reminiscent of label boss Phil Evan's early work. On the flip we have some of Spin Fidelity's deep and emotive electro funk but he'd already won us over with the title "Juno".

  5. Clark - "Laptop Stand" (3:21)
Review: Plenty of big hitters feature on this new various artists collection from Care4Life. It's a Harvey edit of Kiwi that kicks off with a slow, darkened grubby dub disco workout then Apiento & Tepper link for "Blossoms", another deep and dubby cut but with thoughtful pads and icy electro twinges. FYI Chris ups the ante with a warm and atmospheric house cut that carries you away on a spaced out vibe and Luke Vibert gets typically wonky and electric on his playful downbeat jam "That's Ill Folks." The biggest curveball of the lot is Clark's "Laptop Stand", an acoustic guitar piece with a curious folk vocal.

Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Review: Late last year, French imprint Chuwanag launched via a fine compilation exploring the early '80s Britfunk sound (think jazz-funk and electrofunk) in impressive detail. You'll find numerous aural nods to that style on this follow-up, a fine debut single from producer Koji Ono. Check, for example, the sparkling synthesizers, hustling guitars and house-tempo jazz-funk grooves of "So High", the wiggly Clavinet lines, whistling melodies and rubbery bass of "Inner Rhythms" and the luscious, misty-eyed warmth of ear-pleasing mid-tempo instrumental jam "Momoshima". All are exquisite examples of revivalist cuts that boast more than enough freshness and impeccable instrumentation to bear comparison to the records that inspired them.

Review: It's hard to over-emphasize the impact that Mr Fingers' "Washing Machine" EP had when it was first released in 1986. The follow-up to the similarly influential "Mystery Of Love" - arguably the foundation stone for the deep house sound - the EP's track listing contained two cuts that would still make many people's 'best house tunes' list: "Washing Machine", a clattering, delay-laden early acid house workout that peppered a jacking drum beat with wonky TB-303 motifs, and the breath-taking deep house bliss of "Can You Feel It" in its original instrumental mix form. Both should be in your collection; if not, then snap up one of these red vinyl reissue copies ASAP. For the record, bonus deep house/acid house fusion cut "Beyond The Clouds" is also superb.

Review: This is a cheeky single-sided affair that contains a gently tooled-up, rolling and rearranged version of a Marlena Shaw-sampling jazz-house classic that is rightly considered something of a dancefloor classic. The edit itself is undoubtedly rather good, subtly adding a little more bottom-end grunt whilst making a little more of the original's snaking sax parts, much-loved vocal sample and groovy jazz percussion. You can decide or not whether the re-edit was needed; certainly, the mystery re-editor has done a rather tidy job on the rework.

Review: The latest artist to deliver a volume in digital download specialists Masterworks Music's occasional "Master Series" of vinyl EPs is Dirtytwo, a Scandinavian duo best-known for their releases on Local k and Razor 'N' Tape Reserve. A-side "Consensual" is a genuinely deep and immersive affair driven forwards by echoing electric piano stabs, hissing ride cymbals and addictive bass, all topped off by glassy-eyed vocal samples of what sounds like Motown legend Marvin Gaye. Flipside "Get Down & Get With It" is an altogether sweatier and sleazier affair, closer in tone to the pair's various loved-up and peak-time-ready singles on Local Talk. It's rather good, though we still prefer the tactile and huggable A-side.

Review: Consistently on form house master DJ Steaw is back with more of his essential nuggets. "Freee" (House mix) has something of a classicist feel, with its straight up drums and star gazing synth lines disappearing off into the cosmos. A sweet and tender vocal finishes it in style. "Freee" in original form is a perfect bit of late 80s jazz funk, disco and boogie fusion that rides low while making your temperature rise. "Walk In Broadway" closes out with more peak time grooves, pounding kicks and an old school bassline that nags down low throughout.

  1. Amadeus (5:32)
  2. Marvin (5:56)
  3. Once There Was A Dream (5:23)
  4. Sinister 9001 (5:50)
Review: Five years after he contributed a track to Rutilance Recordings' double-vinyl "Volume 11" compilation, the label has finally given Kicks the chance to release an EP of his own. It's a rather good EP, too, with the French producer offering up a quartet of chunky cuts in the Phil Weeks style that add spacey tech-house sounds and retro-futurist motifs to bumpin' deep house grooves. Picking favourites is touch, though we're particularly enjoying the driving, funk-fuelled goodness of "Marvin C", and the intergalactic headiness of "Once There Was a Dream" - a track rich in deep space chords and starry-eyed lead lines. Elsewhere, "Sinister 9001" smashes together bombastic speed garage beats, weighty bass and Yorkshire bleeps, while "Amadeus" is a lusciously spacey romp in the French producer's now trademark style.

Like Water (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: TCLR 035. Rel: 12 Jun 20
  1. Like Water (9:16)
  2. Another Day (8:28)
  3. Stockholm Syndrome (6:42)
  4. Seems Like Yesterday (6:56)
Review: The tracks on this EP from DJ Boring were made for his acclaimed live show, and have been getting fans in a spin ever since. Opener "Like Water" is lithe house music with a cosmic feel that will have you afloat in no time then "Another Day" get more ravey on thumping drums and busy synths. The lush, serene deep house of "Stockholm Syndrome" might be a highlight for us, then "Seems Like Yesterday" closes out in breezy, groovy fashion. The fantastic sleeve has been designed by New York based artist Amir Jahanbin, who was also responsible for the visuals at the live show, making this an even more essential purchase.

  3. Techno Is Black (Respeck) (5:29)
  4. Falling In Love (dub) (4:45)
  5. CyBoTrAx (5:54)
Review: We'd say it was a smart move by Shall Not Fade snapping up an EP from Byron The Aquarius, but his track record is so good that there's little or no risk involved. The Atlanta-based producer has yet again delivered the goods, confidently striding crunchy analogue deep house jazziness (the synth-and-piano-laden opener "Feelings Is It Real"), 21st century broken house/jazz-funk fusion (the jacking drum machine fills, Kaidi synth motifs and acid squelch of "Age Of Ultron (featuring MDMA)", spacey deep techno futurism ("Techno Is Black (Respeck)"), woozy deep house warmth ("Falling In Love (Dub)") and intergalactic downtempo beats (classy closing cut "CyBoTrAx").

Galactic Love
Cat: VISIO 032. Rel: 11 Jun 20
  1. Galactic Love (6:11)
  2. Kissed By The Sun (5:14)
  3. Galactic Love (Visions remix) (8:29)
Review: Keys of Lynx is a Swiss pair who are both skilled musicians. Here they serve up a suite of lush and musical cuts that fuse boogie, synth, jazz, funk and deep house into irresistible new dance floor forms. Depending on the context these could be early warm ups to get the floor going, or peak time workouts to send people into overdrive. "Galactic Love" echoes elements of Omar S's raw 80s production style as it rides on rickety drums and glows with synth brightness, while "Kissed By The Sun" rough rides on more ramshackle drums as sci-fi keys glisten and glow up top. Add in a bassline of which Dam Funk would be proud, and a more house leaning version of "Galactic Love" and you have a very assured 12".

Formula EP
Formula EP (12")
Cat: FIT 025. Rel: 27 May 20
  1. Exist On (7:01)
  2. Formula (5:23)
  3. Wayne County Stomp (4:19)
Review: After five years of on-off collaborations and side projects, Aaron 'FIT' Siegel has finally got round to making a new solo record. It's rather good, with startling A-side "Exist On" delivering a brilliant blend of breakbeat-driven turn of the '90s grooves, chunky bass, ultra-dreamy chords and the kind of bleeping top-end melodies more readily associated with the early releases of Warp Records. Title track "Formula" moves even further towards bleep techno territory via deep space chords, thumping techno beats, Kraftwerkian lead lines and the kind of distorted analogue bass found on LIES releases, while "Wayne County Stomp" sounds like a mutated, mind-altering cover of Steve Poindexter's "Computer Madness".

Earth EP
Earth EP (12")
Cat: GUDU 003. Rel: 20 Mar 20
  1. Jigoo (with Peggy Gou) (6:31)
  2. Not Sure How I Would (6:05)
  3. One Itself (5:23)
Review: Here's something of a surprise: an EP from perennial deep house and disco eccentric Maurice Fulton on Peggy Gou's hyped Gudu imprint. The Sheffield-based American joins forces with Gou on A-side "Jigoo", with the pair peppering a squelchy synth bassline and Chicago house style drums with smile-inducing piano riffs and swirling electronics. Fulton reverts to weirdo disco mode on B-side opener "Not Sure I Would", a hard-to-describe number that contains many of his usual aural flourishes (live-sounding drums, bonkers bass, Clavinets, spiraling synth sounds etc), before flitting between African style hand percussion and taut machine drums on fine percussion workout "One Itself".
